Greetings! Happy Post-Birthday to Terry Riley! (June 24th) Enjoy an early composition from 1965 followed by a new composition honoring Terry Riley's, "Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band", the "B-side" of his classic release, "A Rainbow In Curved Air". " Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band" is a saxophone-based drone piece featuring tape loops and edits, drawing on Riley's all-night improvisatory performances in the 1960s. VEiiLA (Pronounced Vay-la) is Vif Nute and Bes Eirid, a "band without a country," the duo fled their homeland of Russia with a couple of suitcases when Russia invaded The Ukraine in 2022 unwilling to support the ugly war and the horrible autocratic regime. They embarked on a journey without a destination. "VEiiLA" is a stylized reference to a Baltic mountain dwelling demon that lures men into her cave by singing and then devouring them. Currently in Armenia, VEiiLA released their second studio album in 2023 called "Sentimental Craving For Beauty" and it's available via Projekt Records. Projekt Records present's Italy's DELREI. Alessandro Mercanzin imagines a visionary dystopia where a solitary figure navigates an inhospitable post-nuclear desert. It's a hypnotic land of cold haunted nights, lonely red vistas and somber personal solitude."Desolation and Radiation" is Produced by Maurizio Baggio (recently producing Soft Moon, Boy Harsher, & Nuovo Testamento) The adventurous sound of the album is coaxed from various guitars, vintage instruments, reverbs, and the marranzanu (a traditional Sicilian harp.) Mercanzin plays most of the instruments and is augmented by Maurizio's vintage synths and old 60s organs, Michele Tedesco's trumpets on "Nowhere to Ride," and Stefano Miozzo's pedal steel guitar on "Far from Here.” https://projektrecords.bandcamp.com/album/desolation-and-radiationhttp://www.projekt.comhttps://www.youtube.com/c/DJNocturnaListen : http://modsnapradio.comQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on ModSnap RadioKMOD: San Antonio2pm (HST), 5pm (PST), 6pm (MST), 7pm (CST), 8pm (EST)#modsnapradio #postpunk #goth #darkwave #DJNocturna #delrei #AlessandroMercanzin #ProjektRecords
Portland-based PROJEKT RECORDS home to Thanatos, Steve Roach, Aurelio Voltaire, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Lycia, Erik Wøllo and many more, celebrates PROJEKT RECORDS' 40TH ANNIVERSARY. Over the years, a two-genre approach has consistently covered both the electronic/ambient and goth/darkwave realms. Projekt's noteworthy and boundary-pushing darkwave acts established the label in the 90's as the American counterpart to England's famed 4AD. Lycia, Love Spirals Downwards, Lovesliescrushing and the aforementioned Black Tape For A Blue Girl each pioneered their own unique Darkwave sound. During the label's heyday in the dark genres from 1992-1997, Lycia toured withType O Negative, counting Peter Steele as one of the label's biggest fans. Voltaire's 1998 Projekt debut, The Devil's Bris remains a classic of the genre. Projekt released more than 75 Steve Roach titles (two were even Grammy-nominated), is reissuing Michael Stearns' classic catalog, and released an LP of 1995's beloved dark Christmas album Excelsis which warranted multiple sequels, Unto Ashes & Thanatos continue to release new music as well. With over 67 million tracks streamed in 2022, their roster grows with a biweekly schedule of new and classic titles adding to the 650+ albums. I spoke to musician, composer and founder SAM ROSENTHAL and SHEA HOVEY (Projekt's dedicated and long time Promotion Assistant )who also has helped Projekt thrive throughout the decades where so many other labels have perished. To this day Projekt continues to nurture the careers of its highly select roster of artists. When you were in high school what did you want to be when you grew up? Were the seeds planted for what you eventually would be doing, or did you take a completely different path? Today my guest and I are going to look back at 40 years and compare experiences. Way back in the 70's and 80's, when I was growing up in South Florida, I went to school with a lot of the same kids from elementary school through high school. Sam Rosenthal was one of those kids and I thought it would be fun to check in with him ( 40 years later) and ask him what his perspective is on life. I thought he was a pretty cool guy back then and I'm happy to report he still is. Listen in and see where life took both of us. Today's guest deejay is Sam Rosenthal. I invited Sam to guest deejay on Soundwave because he is the founder of Projekt Records. I didn't ask Sam because Projekt explores genres of music I love, such as ambient, darkwave, and goth, although that's part of it. No, it's because Sam has been running Projekt and releasing breathtaking music for nearly 40 years! For a lot of us, Projekt has become an institution. It feels like it's always been a part of our lives. Incredibly, I've been listening to music released by Projekt for nearly half my life. Sam's Black Tape for a Blue Girl has always been a favorite. Steve Roach, of course, who makes an appearance on today's mix. And I've been listening to Anji Bee and Ryan Lum's Lovespirals for years. And so many compilation albums. I fully expect Sam will be releasing more music from Projekt well into the middle of the 21st century. And Sam will be the house deejay at my funeral. Wow, that got dark. Sam, I hope you took that in the spirit that was intended. Sam has some words about his mix below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be DJ Bulut. See you then. I put together a mix of tracks selected from the 600+ electronic/ambient/drone albums released on Projekt over the last 39 years (founded in 1983!) Three are my collaborations with label artists; for the other four, rather than selecting “hits” I programmed deep tracks that I quite enjoy. With over 50 releases on Projekt in 2022 there is an abundance of wonderful music to chose from. My intention for Soundwave was to create an hour flow of the mood of Projekt — an exploration and overview for listeners discovering the label for the first time. Peter van Cooten runs the excellent Ambientblog website which has great reviews and, of course, wonderful mixes. Anytime Peter reaches out with a mix idea or a a set he'd like to cross-post on both of our platforms, I will always jump at the chance. As I said on Peter's last guest mix, his sets are different from mine in that they are more intricate. He does not use full tracks, instead opting for excerpts and samples piled on each other, sometimes 2, 3, or 4 tracks play simultaneously, to create a new sound collage. Here's what Peter says about this mix: "Apart from its opening sample – ‘It is time to stop seeing. It is time to stop speaking. It is time to listen', from David Cronenberg's Crimes Of the Future – this mix has no central theme or story. It's up to you, the listener to take the time to listen and go with the flow. Let your fantasy tell you the story. And, after you did, I'd love to hear what you heard. This mix is created using many fragments and samples from longer pieces of music, often presented in multiple layers. Check the original compositions using the tracklist below." Here's a map of the mix, layer upon layer of the 31 tracks used in the collage. Check out Peter's work here: https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/ He also does surround sound mixes, which you can find here: https://www.ambientblog.net/blog/the-surround-mix-versions/ And Peter is on Mixcloud - https://www.mixcloud.com/ambientblog/ Cheers! Popular electronic music was born out of the creative ferment of the 1960s. As a result, it took on some of the character of the cultures from which it emerged. In academic settings, it was dry, intellectual and experimental; in Germany, technical and mechanistic; in France, lush and romantic; in England, it was integrated into Progressive Rock; in the U.S. and Japan, it became part of the commercial record business, with electronic versions of classical works by Bach, Debussy, Satie and Pachelbel. While in California — as you might expect — it was embraced by grassroots psychedelic and spiritual subcultures creating music for a New Age. In Los Angeles and San Francisco, sonic explorers like TERRY RILEY, MICHAEL STEARNS, STEVE ROACH, KEVIN BRAHENY, IASOS, and DON ROBERTSON discovered the power of electronic music to take listeners on virtual journeys across time and space. Soon, an international cohort of electronic musicians—aided by drugs and new instruments—began to create an informal genre of electronic "spacemusic." A young rock guitarist from Tucson, Arizona named MICHAEL STEARNS became fascinated with electronic music and moved to Los Angeles in 1975 to be part of the emerging scene. He learned to program synthesizers, started an independent record label, and began releasing his own music in 1977. In 1981 he produced a classic of California electronic journey music called PLANETARY UNFOLDING. Long out of print, it was remastered and re-released by Projekt Records in 2022. Combining early analog synthesizers with natural ambient sounds, ethereal chorales, and powerful electronic effects, it's a profound journey across time and space. On this transmission of HEARTS of SPACE, we feature PLANETARY UNFOLDING in two continuous "sides" (remember sides?) with an interlude by MICHAEL STEARNS from THE SOFT TOUCH OF MORNING LIGHT, and complete the hour with additional music by MICHAEL STEARNS...
We were thrilled to have Sam Rosenthal of Projekt Records, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, and more join us to head down atmospheric dark ambient branches. Sam has been operating since the early 80s and shares his thoughts on his own work, the artists that were part of the label, and how the music landscape has changed. An insightful history shadowy world of Projekt Records.
The Cleft Serpent is the 13th album of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. The two-CD edition which is also available on vinyl, minidisc, cassette and digital format is one of Projekt Records' ' founder Sam Rosenthal's latest production. Black Tape For A Blue Girl began over thirty years ago by Rosenthal's exploration of brooding extended electronics and strings meshed with deeply revealing lyrics and darkly textured, melodramatic vocal performances. The ethereal, gothic and dark ambient stylings has made the band one of the originators of the American darkwave genre. Rosenthal's pensive electronics and revelatory songwriting has made fans of director David Lynch, former adult actress Sasha Grey, writers Poppy Z. Brite and Caitlín Rebekah Kiernan, just to name a few.The latest album weaves the tale of the enigmatic Cleft Serpent, as we follow him through time and space within a lush, dark and sensual musical palette of string-hued Neo-Classicism. It's rich and engaging, created by our three-piece ensemble featuring new members, Jon DeRosa's powerful vocals and Henrik Meierkord's mournful cello strings twined around Rosenthal's somber electronics. https://www.projekt.comhttps://blacktapeforabluegirl.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on MODSNAP Alternative RadioKMOD: San AntonioListen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com3pm to 5pm (HST/Hawaii Standard Time)5pm to 7pm (PST/Pacific Standard Time)6pm to 8pm (MST/ Mountain Standard Time)7pm to 9pm (CST/Central Standard Time)8pm to 10pm (EST/Eastern Standard Time
Thanatos began as a studio project between founder Patrick Ogle and Projekt record label founder Sam Rosenthal in the mid 80s in South Florida. They recorded together in 1993 THIS ENDLESS NIGHT INSIDE and 1995's AN EMBASSY TO GAIUS. After that, Rosenthal focused on Projekt Records, while Ogle toured and recorded additional Thanatos albums with a full band. Ogle released a full length album called “Covered Country” on November 26, 2021 featuring the lead single and video “Seminole Wind” originally by John Anderson. Ogle selected nine classic country tunes to deliver with just a mic-ed up parlor guitar and his bare-bones baritone vocals. This is “country” music performed by an artist often described as “goth.” You'd be hard-pressed to tell though, because these stark untreated renditions capture the passion of these songs defying genre classifications.https://www.thanatos.bizhttps://www.projekt.com

Multi-instrumentalist and primary songwriter and producer of the neo-psychedelic post punk band Trance to the Sun, Ashkelon Sain said the spirit of "Trance To The Sun" began in 1990. He said, “Our music is for the nocturnal environment, delivered in a trance-like state, made possible by the wealth of energy dealt to earth in the daytime by the sun.” The band released several albums, EPs, cassettes, CDs and compilations. Trance to the Sun has featured three full time vocalists: Zoe Wakefield, Dawn Wagner and Ingrid Blue. The band's recordings also included drummer Daniel Henderson and other guest musicians. One of his collaborative works include two albums (Atlan and Eztica) with Tuvan throat singer, Soriah on Projekt Records which is described as a "shamanistic ritual art experience, one that documents Soriah's explorations into his own ethnicity and heritage, amplified by the amazing soundscapes of Trance to the Sun guitarist Ashkelon Sain. This is the kind of musical spiritual journey that most others simply aspire to." https://www.projekt.comSain's latest project, Trance To The Moon is a collaboration with vocalist Monet Alarie. Check out the video "Except in Dreams." "Trance to the Moon" currently has two EPs Except in Dreams and Fire Within Glass and a forthcoming album to be released in early 2022. https://trancetothesun.bandcamp.comYou can also watch this video on my YouTube channel. What have we been doing this year? Other than teaching through lockdown, eating too much chocolate, drinking moscato, and yapping away on this podcast... In this episode we get to catch up on the Word Docs' latest projects, which involve a theatre/film project which is not a porno (but does feature a dominatrix), music made in the Hall of Possibility, and more pseudonyms for the woman who has everything. What other writers do you know who can get kidnapped by pirates on their way to a writing gig? Like, for real. Not in their imaginations. And what other academics do you know who are willing to dish the dirt on what it's really like to be a working writer? Fine, lots of them. But how many of them also make ambient music? One. Sean. Well done, Sean. He's reason enough to listen to this podcast - especially if you're smart enough to listen all the way to the end. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Listen to my interview with the amazingly diverse, Athan Maroulis, record producer and eclectic vocalist of goth industrial band Spahn Ranch, Projekt’s Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Fahrenheit 451, Blue Dahlia and most recent, NOIR. From his early industrial, goth rock days to vocal jazz, Maroulis is best-known for his position as lead singer of the industrial/goth/darkwave band Spahn Ranch. He has done a lot of producing through the 35 years or so, remix works, liner notes with Cleopatra Records and Projekt Records and as a publicist for Metropolis Records. He returns in 2019 with his new EP, A Pleasure.
This week we chat with Sam Rosenthal of Black Tape for a Blue Girl and Projekt Records about his perspective on the scene during the 90’s, the state of the music industry, his philosophy on the meaning of life and a lot more! Check out his Patreon page here!
Thom sits down with Soriah, a Tuvan Throat Singer who has played with an incredibly diverse group of folks, including Rob Wynia of Floater and David J from Bauhaus. The name “Soriah” is a spirit suit worn for performance: A state of trance and gnosis that he gets into during his performances. We both agreed that the feeling from performing music had the potential to become “spiritual” in the sense that there are few words that can describe the feeling it brings. We learn that his father was part of Los Sputniks, a mexican rock band that was popular in Mexico City during the mid-60’s, so music always played a part in Soriah’s life. We also learn how Jets and Airplane noises played a part as well. Soriah was exposed to Tuvan Throat Singing from a mix CD given to him by a friend. He then developed this passion the ended up with him meeting and learning from Tuvan throat singer and eventually a trip to Tuva was in order. Soriah also created a record with Daniel Riddle at Mazinga Studios. Soriah tells us about what Tuva is like and some interesting history and stories of the Tuvan folks. Enjoy this really great interview with a passionate and talented musician.
