Bora Laskin, Canada's first Jewish Supreme Court justice, gets his own Heritage Minute

Just in time for Jewish Heritage Month, the team behind the iconic Heritage Minutes—60-second short films about notable Canadians throughout history—is spotlighting Bora Laskin, the first Jewish justice appointed to the country's Supreme Court. Laskin became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court soon after. He served from 1970 until his untimely death from pneumonia in 1984 at the age of 71. The son of Jewish immigrants to Fort William (now Thunder Bay) in Northern Ontario, Laskin was a gold-medal law student in Toronto during the 1930s. With widespread antisemitism in the profession in those days, it was challenging for Laskin to find an articling position, which he ultimately did—with a Jewish firm. Laskin then went on to complete multiple degrees, including from Harvard. After nearly two decades teaching law at the newly founded U of T law school–where the library now bears his name-Laskin was appointed to the provincial court in Ontario, where he developed a reputation as a champion of the labour movement. After former prime minister Pierre Trudeau appointed Laskin to the Supreme Court, Laskin's judgments led to patriating the Canadian Constitution, enshrining the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and equalizing women's marital property rights. This new minute-long short film stars veteran Canadian Jewish actor Victor Garber, who was reportedly eager to take on the role due to his own heritage. It will be broadcast on more than 70 television stations and also online beginning May 7. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we're joined by Sam Rosenthal, one of the creative team members behind the project, who explains the drive and meaning behind the project. Shelley Laskin, his niece and a Toronto school board trustee, also joins. Related links Watch the Bora Laskin new Heritage Minute by Historica Canada on YouTube beginning May 8. 5,000 high schoolers watched a new play about the 1933 Christie Pits Riot: what did they learn?

For the past six weeks, thousands of high school students from around Toronto have gone on a special field trip back in time. They've attended an immersive outdoor play about antisemitism in 1933 Toronto, when growing racial tensions between local Nazi supporters and Jewish immigrants boiled over at a baseball game at Willowvale Park, now known now as Christie Pits. The ensuing street brawls lasted for six hours, wounding dozens of people and prompting the mayor of the day to clamp down on hate symbols by banning the display of swastikas. The creators of the new play hope that by showcasing the age-old hatred of Jews and immigrants, they'll also challenge students to recognize modern instances of hate and take action when they see it. Will the play succeed? The CJN Daily's Ellin Bessner took in a recent performance of The Riot at Christie Pits. On today's show, you'll hear from some students who watched it, teachers who accompanied them, the play's creator Sam Rosenthal of the Hogtown Collective, and his 88 year old father Joseph, who grew up nearby. Portland-based PROJEKT RECORDS  home to Thanatos, Steve Roach, Aurelio Voltaire, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Lycia, Erik Wøllo and many more, celebrates PROJEKT RECORDS' 40TH ANNIVERSARY. Over the years, a two-genre approach has consistently covered both the electronic/ambient and goth/darkwave realms. Projekt's noteworthy and boundary-pushing darkwave acts established the label in the 90's as the American counterpart to England's famed 4AD. Lycia, Love Spirals Downwards, Lovesliescrushing and the aforementioned Black Tape For A Blue Girl each pioneered their own unique Darkwave sound. During the label's heyday in the dark genres from 1992-1997, Lycia toured withType O Negative, counting Peter Steele as one of the label's biggest fans. Voltaire's 1998 Projekt debut, The Devil's Bris remains a classic of the genre. Projekt released more than 75 Steve Roach titles (two were even Grammy-nominated), is reissuing Michael Stearns' classic catalog, and released an LP of 1995's beloved dark Christmas album Excelsis which warranted multiple sequels, Unto Ashes & Thanatos continue to release new music as well. With over 67 million tracks streamed in 2022, their roster grows with a biweekly schedule of new and classic titles adding to the 650+ albums. I spoke to musician, composer and founder SAM ROSENTHAL and SHEA HOVEY (Projekt's dedicated and long time Promotion Assistant )who also has helped Projekt thrive throughout the decades where so many other labels have perished. In 2020, inspired by a mission to increase connectivity during the pandemic, the viral sensation “Blaseball” came to be. Blaseball is a genre of its own – hard to describe – but best put as a game in which the developers set the stage / simulation and the players and community work arduously to influence the outcomes, create backstories and art for characters, vote to change the rules, and more. When you were in high school what did you want to be when you grew up? Were the seeds planted for what you eventually would be doing, or did you take a completely different path? Today my guest and I are going to look back at 40 years and compare experiences. Way back in the 70's and 80's, when I was growing up in South Florida, I went to school with a lot of the same kids from elementary school through high school. Sam Rosenthal was one of those kids and I thought it would be fun to check in with him ( 40 years later) and ask him what his perspective is on life. I thought he was a pretty cool guy back then and I'm happy to report he still is. Today's guest deejay is Sam Rosenthal. I invited Sam to guest deejay on Soundwave because he is the founder of Projekt Records. I didn't ask Sam because Projekt explores genres of music I love, such as ambient, darkwave, and goth, although that's part of it. No, it's because Sam has been running Projekt and releasing breathtaking music for nearly 40 years! For a lot of us, Projekt has become an institution. It feels like it's always been a part of our lives. Incredibly, I've been listening to music released by Projekt for nearly half my life. Sam's Black Tape for a Blue Girl has always been a favorite. Steve Roach, of course, who makes an appearance on today's mix. And I've been listening to Anji Bee and Ryan Lum's Lovespirals for years. And so many compilation albums. I fully expect Sam will be releasing more music from Projekt well into the middle of the 21st century. And Sam will be the house deejay at my funeral. Wow, that got dark. Sam, I hope you took that in the spirit that was intended. Sam has some words about his mix below. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be DJ Bulut. See you then. I put together a mix of tracks selected from the 600+ electronic/ambient/drone albums released on Projekt over the last 39 years (founded in 1983!) Three are my collaborations with label artists; for the other four, rather than selecting “hits” I programmed deep tracks that I quite enjoy. With over 50 releases on Projekt in 2022 there is an abundance of wonderful music to chose from. My intention for Soundwave was to create an hour flow of the mood of Projekt — an exploration and overview for listeners discovering the label for the first time. The slow melody & harmonies of Chrys Bodcast space journey, & the band Bodhiheart, 4 highly respected musicians who have performed & recorded with some of the greats in various genres. The opening track from Airsculpture, a lockdown recording with the original concept, was to lead on it being a Halloween broadcast, with lots of spooky darkness. The Cleft Serpent is the 13th album of Black Tape For A Blue Girl. The two-CD edition which is also available on vinyl, minidisc, cassette and digital format is one of Projekt Records'  ' founder Sam Rosenthal's latest production. Black Tape For A Blue Girl began over thirty years ago by Rosenthal's exploration of brooding extended electronics and strings meshed with deeply revealing lyrics and darkly textured, melodramatic vocal performances. The ethereal, gothic and dark ambient stylings has made the band one of the originators of the American darkwave genre. Rosenthal's pensive electronics and revelatory songwriting has made fans of director David Lynch, former adult actress Sasha Grey, writers Poppy Z. Brite and Caitlín Rebekah Kiernan, just to name a few.The latest album weaves the tale of the enigmatic Cleft Serpent, as we follow him through time and space within a lush, dark and sensual musical palette of string-hued Neo-Classicism. It's rich and engaging, created by our three-piece ensemble featuring new members, Jon DeRosa's powerful vocals and Henrik Meierkord's mournful cello strings twined around Rosenthal's somber electronics. https://www.projekt.comhttps://blacktapeforabluegirl.bandcamp.comSubscribe to my monthly mailing list for the latest music news, updates and my next interviews and events:http://eepurl.com/gtw6PPQUEEN OF WANDS with DJ Nocturna Every Saturday on MODSNAP Alternative RadioKMOD: San AntonioListen : http://modsnapradio.comPlaylist and podcast: https://djnocturna.com3pm to 5pm (HST/Hawaii Standard Time)5pm to 7pm (PST/Pacific Standard Time)6pm to 8pm (MST/ Mountain Standard Time)7pm to 9pm (CST/Central Standard Time)8pm to 10pm (EST/Eastern Standard Time

Thanatos began as a studio project between founder Patrick Ogle and Projekt record label founder Sam Rosenthal in the mid 80s in South Florida.  They recorded together in 1993 THIS ENDLESS NIGHT INSIDE and 1995's AN EMBASSY TO GAIUS. After that, Rosenthal focused on Projekt Records, while Ogle toured and recorded additional Thanatos albums with a full band. Ogle released a full length album called “Covered Country” on November 26, 2021 featuring the lead single and video “Seminole Wind” originally by John Anderson. Ogle selected nine classic country tunes to deliver with just a mic-ed up parlor guitar and his bare-bones baritone vocals. This is “country” music performed by an artist often described as “goth.” You'd be hard-pressed to tell though, because these stark untreated renditions capture the passion of these songs defying genre classifications.https://www.thanatos.bizhttps://www.projekt.com

This mix is created for radio broadcast between 5-7 am, but it is not intended to induce sleep: it is way too 'active' for that. I created this with the intention to manipulate your dreams when you're asleep or half-awake at the time of the broadcast. In that case, it shouldn't be played too loud or you'll probably not be able to sleep at all. When listening on-demand, at different times, sleep is not an issue. Just enjoy the ride and let the sequence guide you. But be sure to sit back, relax, and forget about time. Winter Solstice 3 is created from bits, pieces, samples, and short fragments of music that deserve to be explored in its full original form; only very few tracks are represented in their full original length. note: first time is start time, second time is fragment length Part 1: 05:00 - 06:00 00:00 06:40 Loren Nerell - Last GamelanThe Gong Prophet, 2021, Soundquest Music05:08 06:08 Erik Levander - MassaJöker, 2021, Glacial Movements Records09:54 03:31 Alva Noto - Hybr:ID Oval BlackholeHYbr:ID I, 2021, Noton12:39 02:30 Slim Vic - Ebenist (Part 1)Mörkrets Narr, Lamour Recordsa14:51 02:26 Lustmord & Karin Park - PerihelionAlter, 2021, Pelagic Records16:34 02:26 Hans Zimmer - Bene GesseritDune OST, 2021, WaterTower Music18:05 02:43 Clarice Jensen - The DevilIdentifying Features, 2021, FatCat Records18:06 01:54 Scanner - Drones Places 01Earthbound Transmissions, 2021, Room4018:22 01:40 John Luther Adams - Arctic Dreams 7. Episode 45 Made at Home—Electronic Music Basement Tapes Playlist Jean-Michel Jarre, “Happiness is a Sad Song” from Rarities (2011 Disques Dreyfus). This track is from 1968, before Jarre began studying at the GRM music program directed by Pierre Schaefer. This piece was composed at home using only a microphone, two tape recorders, and splicing tape and was included on this collection of his early works. 5:49 Deuter, “Der Turm/FluchtPunkt” from D (1971 Kuckuck). Home recordings of music composed and played by Georg Deuter. Lots of echo applied to ambient sounds, instrumental drones, and percussion. 4:29 Geodesium, “Free Fall” from Geodesium (1977 Loch Ness Monsters Productions). EMS Synthi AKS synthesizer, Mellotron, Mark C. Petersen. Music composed, self-produced and recorded at home. This music was featured in shows at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado. 5:20 Don Slepian, “Glimmerings” from Electronic Music From The Rainbow Isle (1978 Don Slepian self-released cassette). EML 400/401 Sequencer, double-speed piano, ARP Odyssey, bass, phase-shifted lap steel guitar, strings, Don Slepian; drums, Ron Jacobs. Don produced this music for a dance by Akiko Masuda and released it on a 7-inch vinyl in 1981. Slepian came from Santa Monica, California and released several albums on cassette until the late 1980s. 3:31 Don Schertz, “Mockin' Bird Hill” from BITS.AND.BYTES (Bach, Binary & Boolean) (1978 Schertz Computer Music). LP programmed by Donald Schertz and synthesizer builder John Pratt. This is a fascinating computer music album dating from the very dawn of home computing used for music making. The music was written in software to be performed by the Altair 8800A using three identical voice circuits and used control techniques of the voltage-controlled synthesis. Storage and routines were loaded using cassette. The timing of the notes and the assignment of scales are completely variable, which gives this experiment such a funky and complex sound. From Monterey, California. 1:20 Archie Ulm, “MacArthur Park” from Experience (1979 Archie Ulm self-released album). Yamaha EX-1 electronic keyboard, mixing, production, Archie Ulm. After Hugo Montenegro's Moog rendition of this Jimmy Webb song, I like this one. The EX-1 was one of the most expensive and rarest of synthesizers, costing about $35,000 in 1977 when Archie Ulm used it. The EX-1 featured two five-octave fully polyphonic keyboards, organ style tabs and polyphonic analog synthesizer sounds, which could be slaved; a topmost three octave mini-keyboard for monophonic synthesizer which could also be slaved to the upper organ manual; and a monophonic analog synthesizer bass played by pedals or slaved to the lower keyboard. It also featured a drum machine, arpeggiator, and chord accompaniment. Ulm was connected to various Yamaha keyboard competitions and took this instrument on the road for his night club act. I think Archie is still active. I have seen notices of his organ playing for churches and wine tastings from Colorado to California. 4:32 Men-Eject, “Apologize” from Apologize/Draw (1980 Men/Eject self-released 7” 45). The only known recording from this New York group with the Cabaret Voltaire sound. I don't know who was actually in the group. The single came packaged with a photocopy sleeve and oversized lyric sheet stuffed inside. Engineered by Takashi Tsuruta and Naka Suzuki. 3:38 Zach Swagger, “Empty Highways” and “Going Going Gone” from Empty Highways (1980 It's Gone). Privately released 7-inch 45 by Zach Swagger. All sounds and effects by Zach Swagger. Ambient sounds, tape loops, verging on noise/industrial style. 3:20 and 3:29 Delta, “Mr. E. Chaos” from Diagrams Of Women (1981 Classified Records 7-inch 45). Synthesizer, Melodica, Vocals, Dee McCandless; Synthesizer, Gene Menger; Bass, Rude B.; Guitar, Vocals, Jonathan Hearn. Versions with triangle shaped picture sleeve. 3:07 Hidden Combo, “Driving Through Frankie Valley” from King Of Siam/Music From A Sophomore (1981 Phantom Plaything 7-inch 33-1/3). Bass Guitar, Bob Dickie; Guitar, Jacy Webster; Buchla Electric Music Box, Charles Cohen. Comes in an oversized folder-style picture sleeve, with folded insert. This track was recorded “live at home.” 3:01 Wrinklemüzik, “Rein” from Wrinklemüzik: A Move To The Right (1981 Kenn Lowy self-released 7-inch 33-1/3). Synthesizers, electronic guitar, energy bow, rhythm machine, Kenn Lowy. Recorded live at the “public access synthesizer studio,” New York City. 6:33 Tone Poets, “Pente” from Pente/No Work Today! (1983 Millet Music). A Self-released, single-sided flexi-disc by David Mandl. Flexi-disc made by Eva-tone, which was an affordable alternative to vinyl releases. Drum programming, synthesizer, David Mandl. According to a note from Mr. Mandl at the time, this was “recorded in my home 8-track studio and is available for $1.00.” 2:49 Vox Populi, “Ectoplasmies II, I, III, IV” from Ectoplasmies (1983 VP 231). Self-produced 7-inch 33-1/3 from France. Synthesizer, Effects, Tape, Voice, Percussion, Flute, Bass, Gnouf Tap; synthesizer, B. Wolf. Four synth tracks from this French industrial-leaning group. 6:47 Projekt Electronic Amerika, “Round Trip (Reprise)” and “Year 90-10” from Tanzmusik (1985 Projekt). Limited private release LP of 250 copies. This was an elaborate solo project by artist Sam Rosenthal who played all of the instruments and recorded the music. He also drew the cover art. Equipment used: Korg Poly-61 (non-MIDI); Realistic Moog synthesizer on the track “Round Trip (Reprises);” Boss DR-110 Dr. Rhythm Graphic; Aphex Aural Exiter; Roland SDE-1000 and SDE-2000 digital delays; Forman Reverb. 1:51 and 5:30 Conrad Schnitzler, “Die Rebellen Haben Sich In Den Bergen Versteckt” from Blau (1974 Conrad Schnitzler self-released album). Electronic rhythms, manual filtering, modular synthesis, phase effects on tape. Minimalist and original. Schnitzler kept it simple, no elaborate embellishments or musical arrangements needed. 18:45 Background music used during this episode (excerpts): Conrad Schnitzler, “Untitled” from The Red Cassette (1973 Conrad Schnitzler self-released cassette). Electronic rhythms, manual filtering, modular synthesis, phase effects on tape. Excerpt. Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. For additional notes, please see my blog Noise and Notations.

Emma and Gil chat with Sam Rosenthal and Stephen Bell of The Game Band, known for their bizarre cosmic horror sports sim Blaseball. We discuss the unique feedback loop between Blaseballs fans and its creators, the benefits of apophenia, and how baseball was uniquely suited for this treatment at this moment in history. SHOW NOTES 7m00s: The score bug that Gil is referring to is the graphic that appears overlaid on most sports broadcast, showing the game's score and other vital stats. Gil also refers to external chest protectors that baseball umpires used to wear, an icon of baseball from decades past. 7m59s: The Blaseball wiki. 10m00s: The music that Stephen refers to is literal fan-made music. Fan canon says that the team the Seattle Garages are actually a rock band forced to play Blaseball. Fans have actually recorded and released these albums. 19m05s: Here's Cat Manning's excellent Blaseball primer. It's a good way to get a sense of the lore of the game. 22m11s: We chatted with game designer and wide receiver Adrienne Smith in Ludology 240 - Are You Receiving Me? 26m15s: Apophenia is the tendency to make connections between disconnected things. Game designers can use it to make meaningful experiences and memorable stories, but other people can use it for very bad things. 27m42s: Kayfabe is a wrestling term that denotes the acceptance of the fictionalization of staged events. In other words, a wrestling announcer working in kayfabe will treat a match as if it is a genuinely-contested sporting event with an uncertain outcome, not a scripted match in which all participants know the winner ahead of time. Kayfabe is very much another example of a magic circle. You can hear Geoff Engelstein and Ryan Sturm discuss the magic circle with game designer Eric Zimmerman in Ludology 79 - The Magic Circle. 29m34s: SIBR is the Society for Internet Blaseball Research. Their name is a reference to SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research. (In real-world Major League Baseball, SABR is the organization that devised "sabermetrics," the advanced statistics that powered the Moneyball movement.) SIBR has written several academic papers analyzing the effects various aspects of Blaseball. 32m54s: Taskmaster continues to be one of Gil's favorite shows. 35m44s: Uncharted is a series of video games about uncovering historical mysteries around the world, and killing a lot of bad guys in the process. 44m02s: More info on Twitch Plays Pokémon. Also, Our Place, a MUD. 48m17s: More info on the John Cage composition As Slow As Possible (Gil misstated the title as "As Long As Possible"). You can watch a video of one of the note changes here. Also, Gil should have mentioned the 10,000 Year Clock, a clock that is being built within a Texas mountain of Texas (funded by Jeff Bezos) that will be designed to run 10,000 years without any human intervention. This is not the kind of scale humans are used to thinking in, which is what makes these projects so strange and intriguing. 53m04s: Welcome to Night Vale is highly recommended for anyone intrigued by the idea of comic cosmic horror. For example... "The City Council announces the opening of a new dog park at the corner of Earl and Sommerset near the Ralph’s. They would like to remind everyone that dogs are not allowed in the dog park. People are not allowed in the dog park. It is possible you will see hooded figures in the dog park. Do not approach them. Do not approach the dog park. The fence is electrified and highly dangerous. Try not to look at the dog park, and especially do not look for any period of time at the hooded figures. The dog park will not harm you." 55m51s: Baseball has several "unwritten rules" of decorum. One of them is that bunting to break up a no-hitter tends to be frowned upon. It happens every few years; in 2019, a minor-league team broke up a combined no-hitter in the 9th inning with a bunt, which resulted in a benches-clearing altercation.  1h00m42s: Here is the Blaseball Discord server. 1h05m40s: Gil is referring to Marcel Duchamp's readymade sculpture Fountain (although there are rumblings that the piece was actually made by Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven). Afterwards, Gil refers to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Chain of Command, in which a Cardassian tortures Jean-Luc Picard by inflicting pain if Picard does not claim he sees five lights when in fact there are only four in front of him (which itself is a reference from a scene in 1984). 1h06m57s: "The Commissioner Is Doing A Great Job" is a common Blaseball meme. The Coffee Cup was the most recent season of Blaseball before this recording, which was a knockout tournament of nontraditional Blaseball teams instead of a "traditional" season (whatever that means). 1h08m03s: Twitter links: The Game Band, Blaseball, Sam Rosenthal, and Stephen Bell. Here is Blaseball's Patreon. 1h10m16s: Guess which blaseball team Gil follows?

Music For Long Winter Nights This is my 2-hour contribution to the (7-hour) ambient music night on Concertzender Nederland radio, which was broadcast in the December 19-20 night. When compiling this set, I tried to keep in mind that this was intended to be listened to in the deepest and darkest of the night. But it is not a 'sleep set', due to the variety of moods and atmospheres. We're joined by Sam Rosenthal, Joel Clark, and Stephen Bell, who sat down to talk about how the abundance of audience interaction leads to a game that never stops changing! Along the way we talk about the way that disrupting events shape game design and talk about everyone's favorite Blaseball Players! We recorded this episode near the beginning of the Grand Siesta and had some audio issues, so Andrew may sound a bit louder than other people and Sam's audio is a little fuzzy at the start. In the cooling, darkening months of autumn, time seems to slow in the natural world. The leaves change color, wither and fade, while the animals are busy stocking up for the winter to come. For humans, this year is a somber season. In a time of pandemic, we're challenged to adapt to protective measures, and carry on with normal life in abnormal times. The music of the season features downward progressions and complex harmonies. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a dark ambient autumn journey, on a program called DESCENDING DARK 3. Music by JEFF PEARCE, JEFF GREINKE, HOLLAN HOLMES, ERIK WØLLO & MICHAEL STEARNS, SAM ROSENTHAL, AL GROMER KHAN, ROBERT RICH, NIK PARKIN, and PATRICK O'HEARN. What a year it has been so far for us in Australia, droughts, floods, fires, fake news & don’t get me going on the worldwide pandemic, look on the bright side only ten weeks to Christmas, if any of us can enjoy it our usual way, It will be a milestone for me in 2021, 55 years since getting involved with electronic music, 30th anniversary of Sequences & if all goes well in this f***ked up world, our 200th podcast. In this edition we many of our regulars showcasing their latest songs and albums, just six new names to mention. A very unique style of dark ambient from Argyre Planitia. The duo Architects Of Existence, dynamic full of mammoth synths, in some instances near symphonic. Desensitized, Deborah Martin & Dean De Benedictis joined forces to craft a thought-provoking work of art, that combines ancient and futuristic moods into a captivating world of sound. Just a single from Lazy Pluto, although rhythmic and dance floor worthy, this track’s primary form takes on the immersion of transcendental meditation. One of many projects from Frank Tischer under the name of der tie raum, leaning towards synth & progressive rock. With his debut album ‘Sacred Gift’, Nader Vasseghi view of music as a perpetual gift to humankind, that in this case blossomed through him. Let's get the show on the road with the multi-instrumentalist modular & analog synthesist Lisa Bella Donna's exploration of the Moog Synthesizer system, in Night Flight. The theory and practice of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist meditation seem ideally suited to confronting the stressful challenges we're now living through in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Through a form of meditation called śamatha or "single-pointed attention," the meditator achieves vipaśyanā — in English vipassana or insight — "seeing into the nature of things." In Sanskrit, śamatha means "tranquility of mind," often called "calm abiding." Śamatha has five progressive stages: stable attention, powerful mindfulness, joy, tranquility, and finally, equanimity. The practice of calm abiding leads to insight. Without any formal connection to Buddhist meditation but because of common goals, we can find śamatha in the deeper, quieter, more contemplative forms of ambient music. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a Buddhist-inspired ambient meditation, on a program called CALM ABIDING. Music is by ROBERT RICH, SPUNTIC, SAM ROSENTHAL & JARGUNA, NUMINA & ZERO OHMS, and KEITH BERRY. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Also mentioned are Sam Rosenthal of Alternative Rhythms/Project music label, Rag and Jam (which had a write-up of Sense's group Dusk to Dusk). Sense ponders whether or not there is a cut off age to rock n roll which is brought up in a later discussion featuring Dave Wyndof of Monster Magnet, Dio, vampires etc. Talking Heads' David Bryne's book is mentioned as SNS shares a tune he discovered that morning (Yeastie Girlz "You Suck") only to find out DMD was already privy to the trio's obscure existence having ordered a YG tape back in the late 80's.

Already a third way into the New Year and the musicians we have featured are still producing some gems of high-quality sounds that are dynamic & fresh. Not always the conventional approach to electronic music, but nevertheless engaging & challenging. A few names to mention on this edition, the double live album "Altair", from Ian Boddy’s US show at The Gatherings 2018. Musicformessier collaborates with ambient guitar legend Dan Cain on "Timelessness", one of the best guitar driven atmospheric albums of the year. Rapoon’s deep industrial space ambiance and majestic choral bursts with emotive piano chords, spacious feel of Berlin School style sequencing & melodics from Thaneco. On Syngate records, dark tones & ambient sounds of Divided By Two. The re-release of Syndromeda’s 2006 album "Last Days Of Earth", containing powerful sequencing delving with a darker twist & new to Sequences Pulse Emitter expansive tapestries of sound. Vintage track from Sam Rosenthal 1986 release "Before The Buildings Fell", pioneering a style close to the post-prog work of the Tangs & Eno. Computer chemist kicks off this edition with his eight solo album "Volcan Dreams", with Chris Gill on Guitar & Zsolt Galantai on drums, tracks in the analog domain with strong infectious soloing, especially on the track you are going to hear, fans of old school synth music are going to love this. A very warm welcome to our latest edition No114, very mixed musically as usual. Includes the latest albums by Keith Richie, Steve Jolliffe, Mark Seelig & Sam Rosenthal, Red Planet Orchestra, Odnu, DeVega, Tedd Arnold, Aesthesys, Halonen & Syvers, & Samantha Booquin. Although we basically promote electronic music we’ve decided to feature the delicate keys of solo piano composer Fiona Joy. I was recently talking to a friend who happened to get on the subject of woman pioneers in electronic music and came up with a couple of names I’ve not heard before, Elaine Radigue & Else Marie Pade. Having delved into their catalogue of music I thought it would be interesting to let you hear a couple of tracks from them, Else especially has a fascinating past history, Our blast from the past track ‘Cabala’, celebrates the 30th anniversary of Wavestar’s successful third album, Moonwind, formed by John Dyson & David Ward Hunt, who sadly passed away in 1999. http://instagram.com/jnsilva This mix started with two discoveries.  First I found a great ambient blog called Ambient Landscape.  I have found lots of music through the site, most notably the fantastic album by Dylan Howe, New Designs on Bowie's Berlin, which made it on to my year end lists. The second discovery that inspired this mix was a series from Aural Films called Fog Music.  I believe they up to 25 releases which you find here...FOG MUSIC.  There's some nice stuff in there & I liked to whole concept of "Fog Music," not too far off the "sea" mixes I've done before. So that's where this started.  From there I looked for other foggy tunes.  I'm not a big fan of dark, dissonant ambient that might typically get used for fog music.  I think the collection here works pretty well.
