What does it take to thrive in a top role?   For this Women of Color Rise episode, Analiza talks with Jenise Terrell, CEO of Public Allies. The mission of Public Allies is to create a just and equitable society and the diverse leadership to sustain it. Jenise spent almost her entire career 20+ years at Public Allies, beginning as a Public Allies AmeriCorps member herself in 1997.    Jenise shares key leadership moves she made: Stop holding all the pieces - As women of color, we are often the ones who are holding all the pieces of the pie. Jenise needed to move from being a technical expert to one who coaches and inspires others to manage all of the details. Provide entry points for others - Marginalized groups often don't have access to opportunities because they lack entry points. Public Allies was the entry point for Jenise and provided training and opportunities for her to grow. Similarly, reflect for yourself - am I giving consideration to others and providing entry points?  Find your tribe who can be honest with you and support you - Jenise's leadership team gives her feedback. We need all of us helping each other.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://analizawolf.com/ep-60-what-got-you-here-wont-get-you-there-with-jenise-terrell-ceo-public-allies

Public Allies is a national movement committed to advancing social justice and equity by engaging and activating the leadership capacities of people. Since 1992, we have helped thousands of underrepresented leaders serve our country, get on successful pathways to higher education and careers, and bring communities together to work for the common good. We operate our signature AmeriCorps program in 12 communities nationwide. We believe that communities already have the leadership they need to create lasting social change. The Public Allies team seeks to find and cultivate those leaders and connect them to the issues and causes that ignite their passion.

That program was called the Breakthrough Collaborative, and it involved providing academic support to young people in schools. She went on to do another year of education-focused service with City Year San Antonio, and then followed that up with a year of service with Public Allies in Phoenix. Finally, she spent a year working on education policy with AmeriCorps VISTA. Today, she is works as a Program Manager for Foster Ed Arizona, a program that supports foster youth. She has also facilitated multiple Answering the Call programs, and in that capacity is helping other servant leaders get clear about their own desire to serve again through politics. Ashely is an amazing servant leader, and we're excited to lift up her voice and experience on today's show!

This is the second episode of Talent Matters Remix, our three-episode series in partnership with ProInspire, co-hosted by Monisha Kapila and Rusty Stahl. In this episode, Monisha and Rusty talk with Stephen Bauer about supporting a diverse and inclusive next generation for the nonprofit workforce. Steve reflects on the article he wrote about developing leaders who are both value-based and results-driven, which was part of the Talent Matters series on the Stanford Social Innovation Review blog. He discusses how his experience and thinking has evolved in the seven years since the piece was published in summer 2014. We also discuss Steve's extensive journey through the nonprofit sector, including his experience as an AmeriCorps alum, his impactful work at the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (and specifically the Nonprofit Workforce Coalition), and, finally his decade long career at Public Allies, where he now serves as Chief of Staff. Other topics discussed: Public Allies Program, its values-based curriculum and impact on organizations. Asset-Based Community Development and how it helps build up the capacity of any community to lead itself. Changing and influencing the nonprofit organizational culture by hiring people from the communities that they work for. The need for a common set of values in the sector. Navigating the racial reckoning and pandemic as a white man. How Public Allies managed to go virtual and thrive during the pandemic. His experience as a Chief of Staff and why two Chief of Staff jobs are not the same. Possible impact of the CORPS Act on AmeriCorps. Lessons learned as Interim CEO and making decisions based on values. What would be Stephen's “encore career”. This episode is part two of Talent Matters Remix. We're partnering with ProInspire to bring you this 3-part series of episodes on the Fund the People Podcast. Talent Matters Remix, which will be released throughout July, will revisit Talent Matters, a 2014 series of essays on the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) blog. These special episodes will be co-hosted by yours truly and Monisha Kapila, ProInspire Founder and Co-CEO. Monisha helped to curate and write the Talent Matters blog series, and our conversations will feature three of the other authors of those posts. A lot has changed in our society in the seven years since 2014, when those blog posts appeared. We've had seismic changes in our politics, economy, society, and the nonprofit sector and philanthropy. It's time to revisit, reflect, and remix it! *All resources & links mentioned in the show can be found here at fundthepeople.org/podcast.

Why appoint, as well as elect, women to executive political office? Chicago Alderman (since first elected in 2007), Pat Dowell, a lifelong and distinguished public servant, has the answers for us. For instance, Pat has been a senior city planner and the head of several not-for-profits, as well as a social worker and university instructor. Now running in the Illinois Democratic Party primary for Illinois Secretary of State, a state-wide executive office never held by a woman, she is presently the Chair of the Chicago City Council Budget Committee, overseeing billions of dollars in municipal expenditures. As an economic development expert, Pat was a significant catalyst for the rebirth of the historic Bronzeville community on Chicago's South Side, beginning in the 1990s. Previously, Pat was the executive director of Chicago's Near West Side Community Development Corporation, the Mid-South Planning and Development Commission, and Public Allies, a national youth development organization, founded in Chicago by First Lady Michelle Obama (of which #VoteHerIn host, Rebecca Sive, was a founding board member). While a college basketball star, Pat earned her B.A. in developmental psychology from The University of Rochester. She then earned her M.A. in social service administration from the University of Chicago.

Since then, our signature AmeriCorps Ally Program has identified thousands of diverse young adults and prepared them for leadership. From reiki to light therapy and even ghosts, this second interview is a fascinating continuation of the first. A bit about Heather: Major in Psych and a Minor in Africology, in 1994 volunteered in office for Public Allies in Milwaukee (which Americorps was based on), worked as an Ally at as Economic Development Coordinator in a Milwaukee neighborhood organization and was rewarded with a Proclamation for a day in my name by the Mayor of Milwaukee for her work there. Through this work Heather became acutely aware of the poor health of adults and children due to economic insecurity and stumbled upon Naturopathic Medicine with a plan to come back to that area to create a holistic clinic (though that path would eventually lead elsewhere).  Heather attended Blue Sky massage school and opened an independent office, went back to school for pre med prerequisites and lived in Nice, France during winter break through the Hofstra Univ of NY exchange program. Heather attended Southwest Naturopathic Medical School in AZ, passed the boards and maintains her license.  Around 2003 she started noticing she wasn't completely well and within a few years discovered through her own research that her symptoms aligned with what was then called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFS, now more appropriately understood as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or ME - which in the news a lot now with regards to Covid-19 long haulers. This lead to Heather committing to as much advocacy work as her health allowed to promote better understanding of CFS (broad spectrum) and ME (more specific)  including facilitating the first showing of the documentary The Forgotten Plague by Ryan Prior , being filmed for the Sundance award winning documentary Unrest (though she does not appear in the final cut) and promoting ME organizations, advocates and writers. Black Girls' Guide to Surviving Menopause

“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.” ― audre lorde When I started this podcast last year, I started with a vision of centering the narratives of Black women around menopause and ageing that resonated with me. Of course that meant that as cisgender, Black, heterosexual woman born and raised in the American South I needed to check myself on the fact that menopause, and all of the complexities that comes with it and ageing, doesn't just happen to cis hetero women. If this was going to to truly be a liberatory healing space of transformation for all my siblings (and some nibblings too) on this journey, it's critical to include the voices and stories of those who identify as femmes, gender non-conforming, or non-binary as well. We all have a story to tell. I am so honored and excited that my dear friend Mo George agreed to have conversation with me around how she experiences menopause as a queer butch lesbian. Enjoy! Mo George Monique George or Mo (as she is often called) is currently the Program Officer for the NYC Equity Initiative at Open Society Foundations, where she co-manages a portfolio of $3 million dollars. She is also the cofounder of Workers 4 Racial Equity/W4 which launched in 2016 to address racial equity for black workers, as well as connect the issues of affordable housing with the issues of access to quality jobs. Mo's over 25 years of organizing experience begun in college where she worked locally with NYPIRG on varies environmental issues. Upon graduation, Mo began working with SEIU Local 1199 for close to 10 years. After leaving 1199, Mo moved on to become the Lead Organizer at the Empire State Pride Agenda, where she fought for the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. At Pride Agenda, Mo worked on various statewide campaigns including expanding their annual lobby day to over 1000 attendees and also being on the team that developed the organizing strategies that won Marriage Equality in New York State. After moved on from Pride Agenda, Mo joined Community Voices Heard (CVH) as the New York Chapter Director of Organizing. As a proud product of public housing, she felt that her past work at CVH helped to preserve public housing, and the campaign won over $700 million towards that preservation during her tenure. Mo joined Picture The Homeless (PTH) as the Executive Director in January 2017. Mo's organizing work has led her from meetings at the White House, to becoming a Professional Fellow with the U.S. Department of State through their work with the Greater Lakes Consortium out of Toledo Ohio. This work has allowed her to travel across Eastern Europe to places such as Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, to teach community organizing as well as learn about challenges facing varies Eastern European communities. Mo holds her Bachelor’s degree in Black Studies from SUNY New Paltz and is completing her Master’s in Public Administration. When not working to save the world, she can be found reading a good book, traveling or just relaxing with her partner of over 10 years. How often does a podcast give you chills? This week, we have a very special guest in Brit Morgan. Brit currently serves as a Teen Program Coordinator with COA’s Holton Youth Center. Until July of this year, Brit was a Community Health Ambassador through Public Allies working on the Infant Mortality Prevention Initiative here at United Way. Brit is also the founder and host of the newly 3-year-old PENtastic Open Mic series. A spoken word artist herself, Brit refers to this bi-monthly event as her “labor of love” and a “healing center” for people to feel included and connected to their community. The PENtastic Open Mic happens the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 8pm at The Artist Factory here in Milwaukee. This episode was recorded before Brit began her new role at COA, so we will hear about her work with the Infant Mortality initiative at to begin, then move into some conversation about spoken word and PENtastic. Be sure to listen to the end of the episode to hear Brit share an original spoken word piece she composed. That’s where the chills come in.

Melanie, like you, identifies as a multipod. When Melanie Buford was making a college decision, she felt torn between two very different directions: On the one hand, she had a knack for math, and she felt she could excel in an engineering type role. On the other hand, Melanie felt fascinated by psychology and humanities. These two areas of interest had little to no overlap, so not only was Melanie choosing between majors but also universities. This was the first time Melanie experienced the familiar pull of the multipotentialite journey. After college, Melanie accepted a role with Americorps and moved to San Francisco, where she participated in a program called Public Allies. Working for Americorps was a combination job, as Melanie served at a nonprofit for four days per week and spent her Fridays completing Public Allies’ social justice leadership development program. Melanie and her coworkers were passionate, multifaceted people. Fast forward to now, and Melanie has become a professor of career education for the University of Cincinnati, researcher and nonfiction writer, nonprofit supporter, and science fiction writer. She enjoys helping multi-talented students discover a future that fits their unique wiring, and she loves digging into data on multipotentialites, personality tests, and strengths assessments.

Tonight's special guest is Tree Turtle from Baltimore, Maryland, a survivor of multiple forms of child abuse (in and out of foster care) who's now an activist. Tree says, "I survived physical and sexual assaults as well as child ography and am a longtime facilitator and mediator for child and youth welfare. As a Buddhist educator, my aim is to guide others to use loving-kindness and peace-building to conquer societal ills." Beginning in the mid 80s, Tree has offered educational workshops as an anti-violence facilitator, anti-bias mediator, and sexuality educator for such organizations as Public Allies, the Urban League, SMYAL, OUTPost, and scores of schools, shelters, and foster facilities in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Midwest for over twenty-five years. From the 1980s until today, Tree transitioned from being a survivor to becoming a preventer: an American citizen who works to bring awareness to the enormous harm that violence, inequities, and ignorance breeds amongst humans and other species. Tree believes that speaking out against violence as a survivor and a preventer is not enough: we must also give others tools, practices, concepts, policies and procedures to supplant hateful, violent, inequitable acts with peer-to-peer and institutional love. She writes, "Peer-to-peer love models care in our everyday relationships. Institutional love models care in our governmental, educational, and professional communities. Thus, preventing abuse flourishes when we learn how to treat others well regardless of differences; when we learn how to transform conflicts into caring, mutually beneficial opportunities; and when we learn how to change institutional policies, procedures, and practices to ensure equity while caring for and protecting others from harm.
