In this conversation recorded live at Shakespeare and Company, travel writer Monisha Rajesh talks about her new book Moonlight Express: Around the World by Night Train. From Paris to Istanbul, Scotland to India, the United States to Lapland, Rajesh explores the romance and realities of sleeper trains—where the carriages, the landscapes, and above all, the people become the story. She shares how her love of rail travel began in India, why night trains are enjoying a resurgence amid the climate crisis, and what it means to travel as a woman, a mother, and a writer in a turbulent world. Alongside the practicalities of packing eye masks and hot water bottles, Rajesh reflects on the communities that form in dining cars, the unexpected intimacy of train travel, and the way technology, politics, and global events shape the journeys we take.Buy Moonlight Express: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/moonlight-expressMonisha Rajesh is a British journalist whose writing has appeared in Time magazine, the New York Times, and Vanity Fair. Chatting with author and journalist Monisha Rajesh was just as delightful as I expected (and I had high expectations!). Long-distance train travel is basically synonymous with being a thoughtful traveller, and our chat ranged from a favourite train (you are allowed to have favourites!) through some of the most interesting passengers she's met and a little taster about the thrills of sleeper train travel, which she delves into more in her new book Moonlight Express. If you're listening to this shortly after publication, don't forget you can join us live to chat with Monisha on 10th October for our Thoughtful Travellers Book Club - Moonlight Express edition. Because being a great leader, a strong advocate, and a confident decision maker all require the same skill...knowing what not to do.In this episode, I'll cover:How to create your own “to-don't” list and why it's more powerful than you thinkA mindset shift for saying no without guiltWhy protecting your time is key to getting what you wantConnect with Monisha:www.productivity101.bizwww.linkedin.com/in/mlongacre_____________________
Today I'm so pleased to welcome back someone who you all loved the first time around on the podcast - the brilliant author and travel writer, Monisha Rajesh. Her passion for trains, and for the way rail travel slows you down and opens you up to new worlds, was just infectious. And I'm so excited to say that she's back with a gorgeous new book called Moonlight Express, which takes us deep into the magical world of sleeper trains. In this new adventure, Monisha journeys across Europe, the Americas and beyond, trading airports for railway platforms and following moonlit tracks through some of the most cinematic landscapes on Earth, which we have the pleasure of chatting about today. From the soft snow and candlelit calm of the Norwegian night trains to the fairy-tale villages of Transylvania, glimpsed at sunrise through the window of a creaky couchette on the Dacia Express. Or to the pastel-painted streets of Savannah, Georgia, in the US, reached on Amtrak's Silver Meteor. She takes us high into the Andes too, aboard the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer from Cusco to Arequipa, where the train carves through deserts and towering peaks, so close to everyday life you feel like you could touch it. And back in Britain, she celebrates her mum's 70th aboard the Royal Scotsman, sipping whisky in the observation car as the Highlands go past. She reminds us what makes train travel so unique: the romance, the community, and the chance to simply sit by the window and watch the world roll by.Destination Recap: Oslo to trondheim, Trondheim to Buda, NorwayTransylvania, Romania FinlandPeru - Belmond Andean Explorer - Cusco to ArequipaBelmond Royal Scotsman Caledonia Sleeper Train, London to Edinburgh Cornish Riviera trainSilver Meteor - Orlando, Florida to Savannah, GeorgiaSavannah, Georgia, USAMoonlight Express: Around the World by Night Train by Monisha Rajesh is published by Bloomsbury (28 August). With thanks to Airbnb for their support of today's episode. Thanks so much for listening today. Being mindful about your life choices is key to success in every aspect of life. When you date, you need to have set standards not based on shallow things like height or physical features that eventually fade with age. But based on values. For example, can this man build an empire with you? Can this man insure that your children are born into wealth? If you're over the age of 24 you have no business dealing with men who aren't winners! The days of “I like him because he's cute and funny” are over. Generationally you need to build a partnership with a man who brings more to the table than just “I love you.” Listen to this episode if you want to attract a provider man into your life. True health is not done in isolation, it takes collaboration. This week Dr. Sandi welcomes Dr. Monisha Bhanote, one of the few quintuple board-certified physicians in the country. Dr. Bhanote is passionate about creating a happier and healthier world, and she does so by working closely with health coaches to form an exceptional collaborative care team for her patients. They bring a unique set of communication skills that complement the expertise of doctors. This powerful combination of medical knowledge and communication skills is the secret behind achieving optimal health outcomes. “Don't give up on the things that you believe are worth fighting for - Dan had this endless optimism - if you fought hard enough that you could make anything work.” Dan Hamilton was a longtime friend and mentor to many - an experienced marketing, media, and creative leader - who passed away suddenly last December of 2022. This is the first of two conversations with friends and colleagues who knew Dan over the years - this one with Monisha Dabek, Chief Commercial Officer of Ocean Spray Cranberries, who was one of Dan's friends and partners in his most recent professional adventures at Ocean Spray and Whitewave. https://adage.com/article/opinion/ocean-spray-remembers-dan-hamilton/2459791 Dan Hamilton was a dreamer, a mentor, and someone who had a passion for coloring outside the lines and breaking all the rules, and bringing us along for the ride. Dan was a bandmate, a father, and a friend. He was born in Seattle in 1969 to Valerie and Vernon “Bud” Hamilton. Bud is a fellow P&G Alum who retired after 37 years as a VP in Sales, Marketing, and Governance, and one of the reasons Dan came to P&G. Dan quickly changed the game in digital, rising to become media leader of Olay, arguably one of P&G's most innovative brands in marketing and media during Dan's tenure. Over nearly 15 years Dan worked across Olay digital, Olay media, Olay design, P&G's corporate brand, and personal care. Dan spent another seven years in Colorado as a marketing, media and creative leader @ WhiteWave Foods, as it later merged with Danone. In 2021 he joined Ocean Spray as the company's Head of Marketing Center of Excellence. Across his entire career, Dan was a friend and mentor to the many who had the privilege of working with him. He was always one of the Alums we wanted to reconnect with on this Learnings from Leaders podcast, but we regret missing our chance. So to capture some of the “Learnings from Dan” - we wanted to share a few stories from those that knew him well. Got a Dan story? So if you are in an environment with toxic people who are always gossiping or negative, those neural connections are gonna get strengthened in your mind. Okay? But if you're around other people who are like trying to have self-improvement, trying to make changes in your life, you're gonna learn from them. So I think that's an important thing too is to be cautious of who you're surrounding yourself with.” – Dr. Monisha Bhanote What we discuss in this episode: What nutrigenomics is. Dr. Bhanote's extensive experience with cancer. How cells can become “angry” or transform due to lifestyle or environmental factors.
