Sara Holdren is not just one of the best theatre critics out there, she's a director as well whose production of As You Like It opens this week at Shakespeare at Notre Dame and plays through Labor Day. Sara reveals how she connected Shakespeare's 400-year-old play to the current moment; how we craft community; how she drew inspiration from Vermont's Bread and Puppet Theatre; the challenge of being both textually and texturally surprising; how As You Like It requires an ensemble of clowns and the challenge of figuring out the comedy math; how “criticism is directing backwards;” the value of doing table work while standing up and moving around; formative memories of "butt-love;" and most importantly, what the world would look like if we really could express ourselves, love who we want, and build the spaces around us “as we like it”. (Length 28:50) The post Director Sara Holdren appeared first on Reduced Shakespeare Company.
In the early 1960s, Poet & multimedia artist Gerd Stern & friends Michael Callahan & Steve Durkee founded USCO (an acronym for Us Company or the Company of Us). It became a burgeoning cooperative group of artists, poets, filmmakers, engineers, & composers who worked out of an old church in Garnerville, New York, north of NYC. It is here that they emerged as probably the first producers of multimedia happenings, of immersive & oozing light shows, ephemeral performances that became all the rage during the height of hippie-LSD times. Part hippie, part beatnik, part Black Mountain, part Eastern mysticism, part fluxus, part political leftist, & part new music, they adhered to collective & inclusive artistic practices & preferred to work under the USCO name rather than as individual artists. USCO utilized unique new uses for lighting, colors, projections, film, audio, & live performances to create multimedia & environmental art that included installations with slide projections, closed-circuit television, oscilloscopes, strobe lights, amplifiers, early IBM computers, live performances. This culminate most famously in the Expanded Cinema Festival & Timothy Leary's Psychedelic Theater & the first multimedia disco called Murray the K's World that incorporated immersive technology & ideas, allowing audiences – many of whom may have been tripping – to feel as if they were entering a new, immersive, sensory realm. They've performed or exhibited at many great museums, universities & venues including the van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum, Tate Liverpool, Pompidou Center, MIT, & RISDI. The USCO Church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. I first met Gerd in the 20th Century. Born in Germany in 1928, he emigrated with his parents to the US as a refugee in 1936. Gerd & started crossing paths in New York City in the 1960s. We discovered common ground at a Phill Niblock loft concert in the 1990s. He asked me to write music & sound design for his play, “Lost Cabaret” or “Katandogastrophic,” produced for the 2003 New York Fringe Festival. I asked Gerd to create poetry for a 3D sound work Sky High. It is included in this iMMERSE! podcast. Bread and Puppet Theatre started in a small loft rented by a group of scruffy troubadours in the early 1960s on New York's Lower East Side. Combining daily life and art practice with chewed sourdough bread, accompanied by puppet theatre, it is considered one of the most important formations of political theatre. Sections from 'Honey Let's Go Home Opera', created in 2017, are shared as a part of this episode.
In this session, artist Laura Anderson Barbata and puppeteer, stilt walker and theater historian John Bell speak with Roberto Salas San Juan, a member of the Giganteria Theater in Cuba, about the local histories of stilt walking, its ritualistic use and its place in today's art practices. Barbata has been collaborating with stilt artists and collectives such as the Brooklyn Jumbies, Chris Walker and Jarana Beat for many years. Bell, on the other hand, has worked with Bread and Puppet Theatre since the 1970s as a puppeteer and stilt walker himself. Roberto Salas San Juan is known for his comprehensive studies on this popular art form. It is followed by Laura Anderson Barbata's performance called 'Ocean Calling' recorded in Papua New Guinea, in which speech, costume, music and dance come together with ritual, marching, protest and stilt-walking. Next is the artist's 'The Intervention: Indigo' project, which took place in New York in 2015 in collaboration with The Brooklyn Jumbies, Chris Walker and Jarana Beat. It can be described as a worldwide practice to remind us of the crisis impacting the lives of people of colour living in the USA. We close with another recording of Barbata, a song sung by Lucas Yamahunawë, a leader of the Yanomami community in the High Orinoco region of the Venezuelan Amazon, in accordance with shamanic traditions.

Have you talked to your children about money? The sad truth is that kids as young as two years of age are enticed to want this, want that – it’s the wily little “Want Monsta” and he is really good at making us want more than we need or can afford. It’s hard to teach children real-life skills about spending and saving…but it will be harder later if they don’t learn! After all, money does NOT grow on trees…There are several different strategies parents can use to educate their children about personal finance - how to budget, how to save, how to consider the cost of tax, etc. But what about the theatre? Have you ever considered taking your children to a puppet show, where they can learn about personal finance while belly laughing?Debbie Todd is the co-founder of Ruby’s Troupe, an innovative interactive live and online theatre education group. Rizqi Rachmat, an international hip hop artist and visual designer, stars in the Amazon film documentary: “Rizqi Presents Blockchain.” Rizqi's world is mixed with economic think tanks and creative arts. He attributes the forces that shape him today: martial arts, Wayang (Indonesian puppet theatre), his mother's dancing, and an education that emphasizes free markets. Rizqi talks to us about fascinating aspects of his film production, including a visit to the Bitcoin mining center in Montana in dead of winter. He shares why he believes this technology could empower people in a democracy (i.e. voting), while disrupting the future of finance, among other areas. That's why he wants to blend urban art movement and visuals into his storytelling to help distill various ideas for audience in the film. Like Picasso, Klee was also seeking for simple, modern means of expression. But unlike Picasso, who was impressed by the magical charm of «primitive» sculpture, Klee discovered the original sources of art in his own childrens drawings. Initially he approached a reduction of form cautiously. In later years he developed an intentional naivety into his specific form of expression. In the water colour «Puppet theatre» the theatre becomes the imaginary stage of childhood. The sheet hides depths which are unexpected at first sight: The stripe-like structured brightly coloured figures stand out from the dark background like a shining negative but still remain as if written on. The puppet on the floor seems to have been left unnoticed, the small unicorn on the right, steps stubbornly forward. The duplicity of the picture’s message is in accord with the technical process of the painting: It is made up of two individual parts and Paul Klee touched up the gap with black water colour. The lower part is the fragment of the sheet «Still life {{with the Dice.}}», which Klee registered in his Work Catalogue under the next number 1923, 22. Seen in this way, the Puppet Theatre becomes a stage with a double floor and a vegetative «Underworld».
What do you know about puppetry? What inspires someone to devote their talents to this ancient art and what is its place in our modern digital world? To explore this realm and trace her journey, I converse with puppeteer, biomedical computing graduate, and and co-founder of Birdbone Theatre, Aleksandra Brągoszewska. We talk and talk and try to wrap our brains around subjects like the changing nature of human communication, art as political dissent, the artist in and out of the world, and so, so much more…’Ola’, as I refer to her in the interview, joined me from Montreal, and traced her history from immigration, to un-closeting her inner artist in Kingston, Ontario, through Vermont where she cut her teeth in the world of puppetry, and finally to the current adventures of Birdbone Theatre, including their upcoming Greek tour. -- Links: Birdbone Theatre: http://www.birdbonetheatre.org Bread and Puppet Theatre: http://breadandpuppet.org (Sponsor) La Cabeza Gallery: www.lacabezagallery.com -- Recorded on December 14th, 2016 Music: Hazardous - Light
Intervenants Iñaki Aizpitarte • Chef cuisinier I FR Mathieu Rostaing-Tayard • Chef cuisinier I FR Magnus Nilsson • Chef cuisinier I SE Laura Lazzaroni • Uomo Vogue I USA/IT Rodolfo Gùzman • Chef cuisinier I CL Olivier Joyard • Journaliste et réalisateur I FR Lara T.
