Breathing in the joy and lessons of the plant life surrounding us, Ayana and guest Antonia Estela Perez share an enriching conversation on the power and magic of coming to know the world around us. Antonia dives into the tension that exists in living in and caring for lands that have been violently colonized, calling listeners to understand plants both in the ways that colonization has affected their legacies and within anti-colonial structures that suggest there are other ways to engage with the plants around us. The natural world is, in fact, not separated from any one of us, and in detailing her work with Herban Cura, Antonia brings her insight on connections to plants and land within urban settings expanding the horizons of intimacy between humans and plants across human-imposed boundaries. As Antonia shares more about her New York City and Chilean roots, she reminds us of the value of connection to places for spiritual, ancestral, and medicinal means. Cultural and ancestral knowledge are vital to everyone's survival in a world marred by colonial violence. What healing can be found within our own backyards, our own lineages? Perhaps the plants will lead us home once again – as they always have. Antonia Estela Perez grows medicines, gardens, and networks that work to interrupt anthropocentric, individualist, separatist socialization and bring folks into deeper awareness of their ecological family and belonging. They are first gen, born and raised on Lenape territory in NYC, and descended from the Mapuche peoples of Chile. They have cultivated a deep relationship with their plant relatives since a very young age, and their passion for open-source pedagogy founded the inclusive healing, learning, and collaboration space Herban Cura along with its medicinal product line. My guest today is Canadian based singer and songwriter Pura Fé. Pura Fé, whose name means "Pure Faith," was born in New York City and an heir to the Tuscarora Indian Nation. She is an artist, an activist, and much more. Her musical journey, running the gamut from folk to mainstream through an artful use of the blues, reflects the concerns of an artist who grew up in the Motown era, while citing Buffy Sainte-Marie, Charley Patton and Joni Mitchell as her true mentors. And, more widely, “traditional music from all over the world, wherever the spirit is connected to our roots.” Pura Fé has studied and performed with The American Ballet Theatre Company, and has been in several Broadway musicals and TV commercials. She has sung for countless jazz, R&B, and rock bands, and has stamped her distinct vocals on many recordings, demos, jingles, music videos and movie sound tracks/trailers throughout her career. She is a founding member of the internationally renowned native woman's a capella trio, Ulali, and is recognized for creating a new genre, bringing Native contemporary music to the forefront of the mainstream music industry. Pura Fé won a Nammy (Native American Music Award) for Best Female Artist for ‘Follow Your Hearts Desire'. She also won an L'académie Charles Cros Award (French Grammy) for Best World Album for "Tuscarora Nation Blues". It's not everyday you get to talk to artists you admire and then they turn out to be even more wonderful in person. I've been listening to the music of today's guest for many years now and every time I return to it I'm reminded of why I love music from authentic voices.Pura Fé (meaning ‘pure faith') is a musician, songwriter and activist originally from North Carolina but raised in New York. She is in many ways the embodiment of America's rich and complex ancestral history - with her Native American Tuscarora Indian, African American (specifically Yoruba and Ebo), North Carolinian, Scottish, Puerto Rican roots - all of which is also expressed in her music. We talk about growing up in a family with 8 generations of singing sisters who sang opera, a mother who sang with the likes of Duke Ellington, how piano legend Thelonius Monk is also a relation, about falling asleep in all night church services where jazz trumpet legend Miles Davis among many others would come to play. We talk about her musical education at Lincoln Square Academy in New York and why Pura Fé chose not to sign with Sony and label exec Tommy Mottola (the person who signed and married Mariah Carey) or any major record label for that matter. We talk about singing with Anita Baker about singing at an event with Lena Horne in the audience. We talk about what is American music and particularly the story of Native American people and their music.Guest: Pura FéTitle: I think I was born with a fist in the airSongs all by Pura Fé:Great Grandpah's Banjo from the album Full Moon RisingMahk Jchi from the Ulali project bandMy People My Land Pt.2 from the album Hold the RainRed, Black on Blues from the album Full Moon RisingMy People my Land Pt 1 from the album Hold the RainLet Heaven Show from the album Hold the RainWebsite: https://www.purafe.comInstagram: @pura.fe.9Trailer of RUMBLE: The Indians That Rocked The World - https://youtu.be/hovJUoyxulcClip on the history of the banjo with Rhiannon Giddens - https://youtu.be/DkGSns7-_e0 Artist on her playlist: James BrownIf you'd like to support the podcast click here See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

He spent the bulk of his youth in Great Falls, Montana, where he cut his teeth picking guitar standards at neighborhood get-togethers, before relocating to northern Colorado. There, his musical career hit the ground running with The Atoll, a band he founded in 1989 and that toured nationally, gaining a devoted following. Later, he achieved international acclaim with The Pura Fé Trio, for whom the single “Ole Midlife Crisis,” which Morin wrote and performed with Pura Fé, placed at number 17 on France’s iTunes blues chart. With over a quarter of Guam being solely occupied by U.S. military bases, a legacy of nuclear bomb droppings throughout the Marshall Islands, and the military’s lease of Kwajalein Atoll, much of the Pacific remains silently condemned to serve as a sacrifice zone in the name of U.S. empire. The implication of ongoing military presence in the Pacific Islands has profound consequences for all facets of life. However, rarely do we hear about the struggles faced by these communities. On this episode, we are joined by Cinta Kaipat to learn how the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth, are impacted by said militarization. In the Northern Marianas, communities are resisting a future in which aerial bombardments become the norm, where amphibious-assault trainings sever communities from key fishing grounds and decimate aquatic ecosystems, and shelling, artillery, and mortars destroy sacred land. Cinta M. Kaipat, of Refaluwash-Chamorro descent, is an advocate for Indigenous Refaluwash (Carolinian) rights; preservation of Indigenous cultural practices and beliefs; and promotion of responsible environmental stewardship in the Marianas. Cinta is an attorney, a former Assistant Attorney General; a former Congresswoman; and a former Hearing Officer, as well as a former Deputy Secretary for the Department of Labor. She founded Beautify CNMI!, co-founded PaganWatch, and co-founded the Alternative Zero Coalition, which was newly formed in 2015 to advocate for and protect the Mariana Islands, especially Pagan and Tinian, from irreparable destruction at the hands of the U.S. military and its allies. Should the military barge through with its plans, Tinian and Pågan could expect to be battered with almost 100,000 grenades, rockets, mortars, and artillery rounds. The fight to save Pagån is critical, should the military occupy the island it would ban the public from living on the island – “coincidentally” during a time in which Indigenous Chamorro and Refaluwash communities have been trying to return to Pågan via agricultural settlements. We share Cinta’s story in the hopes that you take time to both listen to and take action with this community that is facing down the world’s largest military ♫ Music by Pura Fé and traditional recordings from The Mariana Islands
