West Virginia's Green Bank Observatory gets a nod in the new Marvel movie…discover a rewarding career (with full benefits, paid leave, and opportunities for advancement!) in corrections…and the Coal River Group shifts its focus to promoting tourism on the water trail…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV TOURISM – West Virginia is no stranger to making it on the big screen lately, and now, the Mountain State is mentioned in a Marvel movie – “Captain America: Brave New World.” Early in the plot, West Virginia natives will notice inspiration from Green Bank, a quiet town that's home to the world's largest steerable telescope. Who knew a town with a population of less than a hundred residents could make such an impact on the Multiverse? We never doubted the possibility. When you visit Green Bank, you'll enjoy a quiet, uninterrupted experience exploring the observatory – unlike Captain America and the Falcon. The Green Bank Observatory offers bus tours of the campus and takes you close to the jaw-dropping 485-foot telescope. While you're here, explore the Science Center and the Exhibit Hall to learn about the telescope's contributions to research and the history behind the observatory.  Read more: https://wvtourism.com/this-small-west-virginia-town-plays-a-big-role-in-captain-america-brave-new-world/   #2 – From JOBCASE – Looking for a job with good pay, full benefits, and the opportunity to advance? Explore a stable and rewarding career with the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation.  As a correctional officer, you'll play a pivotal role in ensuring public safety, upholding public trust and contributing to a higher purpose.  New opportunities and incentives are available. Learn more: https://www.jobcase.com/articles/wv-dcr   #3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – After spending its first 22 years working to restore and protect the Coal River system, the Coal River Group is now setting its sights on promoting tourism in the five-county corridor through which the 88-mile Coal River system passes. “We're transitioning from being primarily a fix-it group to a tourism development organization,” said Coal River Group co-founder and board chairman Bill Currey of St. Albans. “The river's changed dramatically for the better in the past 22 years. It's been exciting to see all the positive things that have happened to it. Now, it's time to take on a new challenge.” The group has led the effort to build 20 public stream access sites along the river system and mapped out a water trail connecting them. They also placed historic markers and signage at the former locks site used by barges and steamboats to haul coal prior to the Civil War. Today, more than 15,000 paddlers, most of them kayakers, ply the waters of the Coal River system every year. Space journalist and TV personality Sarah Cruddas joins the On Orbit podcast this week ahead of her appearance as guest host at SATELLITE 2025.  Sarah has had an exciting career in space journalism and communications from being a weather presenter and science correspondent to being a TV personality, industry consultant and author. She's extremely passionate about how space technology can make life better on Earth, and wants to see the industry get out of its bubble and do a better job of communicating why space technology matters.  Sarah tells the story of how she covered the final Space Shuttle launch and landing in 2011 using a satellite dish to send a signal back to the BCC, and how she took a scientific look at reports of alien activity and UFOs as part of her work on two TV shows. We also talk about what she's looking forward to at SATELLITE, from the keynotes, GovMilSpace program, and networking opportunities to connect with folks in the industry. This episode is sponsored by AvL Technologies. In Episode 123 of White Canes Connect, hosts Lisa Bryant and David Goldstein welcome Brandon Biggs, CEO and co-founder of XR Navigation. Biggs introduces Audiom, a groundbreaking digital map designed for non-visual users. As a blind individual, he shares his journey from opera singing to inclusive design, motivated by the inaccessibility of digital maps on mainstream platforms like Google Maps. Biggs demonstrates Audiom's capabilities, showcasing its auditory and text-based navigation, enabling users to explore geographic spaces through sound cues and keyboard controls. The tool provides vital spatial awareness, helping users navigate city streets, conference halls, and complex environments. He discusses the technology's potential applications in museums, subway stations, and retail stores, emphasizing the need for accessibility in mapping services. The conversation highlights the importance of advocacy, urging listeners to request accessible maps at conferences, universities, and public spaces. XR Navigation aims to integrate Audiom with major mapping platforms, making non-visual navigation widely available. The hosts encourage engagement through feedback and promotion of Audiom at upcoming events like CSUN and NFB's National Convention. Listeners can explore Audiom at https://www.audiom.net and support its expansion by reaching out to venues and organizations to request accessible maps. In episode 267 of the iCantCU podcast, I talk about my recent trip to the NFB National Convention in Orlando. I start by mentioning my improved lighting setup in Studio B, hoping it looks better than last time.  The convention was a whirlwind of activity, and I had the pleasure of meeting many incredible people, especially the lively folks from the NFB of Puerto Rico. I'm proudly wearing their blue shirt with tactile Braille on the back, which I think is really cool. I bought a few things at the exhibit hall, including some treats from Puerto Rico and a shirt from Massachusetts. Managing the exhibit hall table for the NFB of Pennsylvania was quite an experience, filled with vendor issues and sales of tote bags and candy bars. It was hectic, but the team's enthusiasm made it worthwhile, and we learned a lot for next time. One of the highlights was attending a VIP screening of "Don't Look Now," where I met some cast members and enjoyed a post-screening hang. Hilarity ensues when I search for a quiet place for Brian to interview some of the cast and producers.  Traveling was relatively smooth, thanks to some helpful TSA agents and airport staff who made the process easier. The convention itself was a mix of busy days and memorable moments. I enjoyed the camaraderie and efforts of my team, even though it was exhausting. From coordinating the exhibit hall to dealing with last-minute changes, it felt like being back in business again. Despite the chaos, it was a great trip, and I'm looking forward to future travels, though hopefully with a bit more relaxation next time. However, it looks like we may now have the real deal on the horizon from the person behind Microsoft Soundscape. Amos Miller, CEO of Glidance, spoke to JJ from the Exhibit Hall floor about the new mobility aid. This device aims to be the first in what Amos calls intelligent Guides that can assist the existing skills of a cane or Service Animal user. The device utilizes a series of cameras, radar and on device chips to process travel faster than reliance on a current day cell phone. This speed of calculation allows the user to navigate and compensate quicker in challenging environments. Tune in, or read the transcript, to learn how Amos feels about how Glidance can work alongside various navigation apps to provide even greater flexibility when it comes to orientation and mobility. Pre-orders for Glidance are planned for the Spring of 2024 with a possible launch window in early 2025. To learn more, and hear a described video about the unit, visit the official Glidance website.
