Those men, in no way, are indicative of the general consensus of men and, yet, many still view men as the premier problem in society today. Today, we're tackling one of the more controversial and unspoken angles of the gender equality discussion: the struggle men face. More specifically, how the (rightful) innate nature of “male white privilege” has consequently shrouded the staggering statistical inequities men face in many areas, including poverty, mental health and death. This conversation may be triggering, but I encourage you to listen to its entirety before writing it off. The only way to achieve equality is to listen and learn from everyone, white, heterosexual men included. This episode features myself and two wonderful humans from two very different backgrounds, Chelsea Wallace and Greg Ryder. Despite the fight for equality and the strides women have made to get a seat at the table, one thing yet remains: women getting blamed in relationships. It doesn't matter whether the man filed for the divorce, the man is a known bad boy, the man behaved badly or the man is on social media looking sad, the woman invariably gets villified. And the media jumps on the band wagon, presenting as many pictures, social media posts, talks with someone "close" to the people involved as they can to bolster it. Two-thirds of mass shootings in the U.S. are committed by perpetrators with a history of domestic violence. A recent report from the Office of Justice Programs' National Criminal Justice Reference Service explores the connection between domestic violence and mass shootings offering both findings as well as opportunities for improving prevention and response. Jan Langbein and Jordyn Lawson of Genesis explore the highlights of the report, characteristics of these offenders, issues of entitlement and male privilege, and how Genesis responds to survivors of these experiences. My Amazing followers call in and discuss the previous episode of True Tea where we discuss whether or not Trans Women have "male privilege". Specifically in the context of women like Caitlyn Jenner, who managed to amass wealth using her image as a quintessential, White, American cis man. I don't think "privilege" is the right word, but there's a lot to discuss about passing as a man in a patriarchal society.
Caitlin Jenner recently commented that transgender girls should not compete with cisgender girls in sports. I don't have a full opinion on that specific question, but it struck me that Caitlin Jenner has never been a teenage transgender person wanting to participate in sport. Instead, she lead a life where her athletic achievements and fame were built during a time in her life where she was known as a cis man. Even if that wasn't exactly the case, in this podcast, I talk about whether or not "male privilege" is an apt way to describe Caitlin's experience.
