Highlights from this episode with Nic Stone include: Nic's famous mnemonic for the writing process, including a behind the scenes sneak peek to her third book in the Dear Martin series The two questions to ask when working on a new story The experience of having FUN while writing and how each book is a form of self-exploration Reading (rather than avoiding) comp titles during the drafting process Living an emotionally honest life in order to achieve emotional resonance on the page Neurodivergence as a gift and the power of centering mental health The power (and hilarity) of personifying emotions Putting people from your real life in books… so you can murder them. Nic Stone is the brilliant, prolific #1 NY Times-bestselling author of young adult fiction, including Dear Martin, Dear Justyce, Odd One Out, Jackpot, her latest Chaos Theory, and her co-authored book with Ibram X. Kendi: How to Be A (Young) Antiracist. Dear Martin was one of Time magazine's 100 best YA books of all times and won the William C. Morris Award in 2018. The books sequel, Dear Justyce, was an NPR Best Book of the Year. Her middle grade books include, Clean Getaway, Easy Pitch, and Marvel's Shuri series based on the breakout character from Black Panther.
New York born, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, guitarist /singer- songwriter Ricky Byrd (inducted in 2015 with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts), has had a career in music, spanning more than 40 years. He spent over a decade as a member of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts where he contributed music and background vocals to two platinum albums, I Love Rock 'n Roll and Up Your Alley, the gold certified Album, and four others for the band. Although best known for his time spent with The Blackhearts, Ricky has also recorded and played with Roger Daltrey, and toured with Ian Hunter and Southside Johnny. He has shared the stage with music royalty including Paul McCartney, Ringo, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Dion, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Page, Graham Nash, and Elvis Costello…to name just a few. While the lead guitarist is grateful for all his many musical achievements, Ricky often says one of his greatest gifts came about in 1987 when he started his journey in recovery. He's been clean and sober ever since, doing whatever he can to help others recover. It's his passion and what he's most proud of. Ricky began combining music with recovery in 2012, when he co-wrote a song with his friend, Richie Supa. The two wound up writing what is now considered a recovery classic “Broken Is A Place.” He wrote a second song, and then a third, and he didn't stop until the seeds of his 2017 Clean Getaway album were planted. Today, when he's not performing shows, he visits treatment facilities with his guitar and performs for residents. He also does a great deal of public speaking to help as many people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction as he can. Ricky has a new single out now – "Louanne" his first in many years that is unrelated to recovery . Ricky says, “My last 2 records “Clean Getaway” and “Sobering Times” had lyrics that spoke to the issues of addiction and recovery. With this new batch of tunes that I'm releasing as singles, I was consciously staying away from that subject matter. 'Louanne' started with the riff and chords, as do most of the songs I write. Then I start to mumble words and fool with a melody. As I was going through the usual process I blurted out “Louanne.. if anybody could you can.” Then came the line“Why don't you go on and get yourself right .. Louanne.” I knew at that point where I was headed! So I guess you can say lyrically Louanne is a song of encouragement for someone struggling with something, and the music is being driven by a nasty RnR riff.” Ricky Byrd joins us this week as our special guest to share his amazing story.

Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at https://basicfolk.com/donate/Originally from Charlottesville, Virginia, Caroline Spence came from this cool family that always seemed to be messing around with music: listening and playing music. She's recently been discovering and sharing home movies from when she was a kid: scooting around in diapers on a guitar case, singing with her grandfather and mother. The clips, which she used in the video for “Clean Getaway,” were a gift in which she was able to see her true personality and genuine love of music from a young age. She was emboldened to perform and write by her musical aunt, who invited Caroline to open for her as a teenager. She came to Nashville for a job in the music industry and slowly started putting herself out there as a songwriter for other musicians. Her writing is based in honesty and she opens up about her relationship to the truth in our conversation. We also get into how she had to develop ego, why it matters and how she let herself have access to ego. We discuss her love of flowers and how she relates the songs on her new album True North to different flowers. Caroline is an avid reader of Mary Oliver and even has a new song named after her as the poet feels devotional and spiritual. Enjoy Caroline Spence!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

One of the hippest and generally fun manifestations of the SpyFi genre was the 60's TV hit The Avengers. The BBC production was filled with British eccentricities, but the tongue in cheek humor, multitude of beautiful assertive women and constant action made it a hit with American audiences as well. The show did not take off in South Africa, however, because of a lack of TV broadcast facilities in the country. However, after the TV show went off the air, Springbok Radio began producing a radio version of the series. Although some of the characters were streamlined and combined, the show was a long running hit. This week, we are speaking with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd (2015 inductee with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts) (and guitarist/singer-songwriter). Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. Byrd’s mission is to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway (2017) at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. In our conversation, Ricky shares his own recovery journey and how he went from being exposed to marijauna and alcohol at the age of 13 to now leading men and women on their personal recovery journeys. One of the biggest lessons Ricky learned early on is the power of listening to other people’s stories and being honest with his own thoughts and feelings. Topics Discussed: Recognizing how addiction leads to compulsive, obsessive actions The importance of having a Recovery Toolbox and Positive Coping Skills How community helps us stay accountable in Recovery Meditation as a form of listening and being present in the moment Why Recovery is about listening others and being honest with ourselves Learn More about Ricky Byrd: Website: https://rickybyrd.com Kayos Productions: https://www.kayosproductions.com/ricky-byrd Connect with Positive Recovery MD Podcast Website: https://www.positiverecoverymd.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/577870242872032 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4JcDF1gjlYch4V4iBbCgZg Connect with Positive Recovery Centers Online: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/positiverecoverycenters/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PositiveRecoveryCenters/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/positiverecoverycenters/ Contact Positive Recovery Centers:If you or someone you know needs help, visit the website, or call the number below to schedule an assessment. I like the comedy with my Rock 'n Roll. Hall of Fame'r Ricky Byrd, delivers brilliantly on both counts. Great stories of his heroes in both worlds. Watching them as a kid on Ed Sullivan, to sharing jokes and cokes at The Pines Hotel coffee shop with Freddie Roman, Dick Capri, and Mal Z Lawrence, to sharing a stage with Stevie Wonder, Joe Walsh, Billie Joe Armstrong, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr, all at the same time. Full circle. I met Ricky Byrd back in the daze… when we were both in a daze… I was booking the Rock’ N Roll Café on Bleecker Street. Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage lead guitarist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, playing those iconic riffs in the great MTV Music Video Days. Ricky has recorded, toured, and/or has performed with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, Mavis Staples, Brian Wilson, Alice Cooper, Paul Shaffer, Smokey Robinson, and so many others, but we got stories about the above mentioned. As we did about Don Rickles, Frank Gorshen, Ron Wood, Keith Richards, Peter O'Toole, My Favorite Year, Hurricane Sandy, Robert Plant, getting sober, recovery, recovery music groups, recovery coaching, and counseling, creating and making music which supports the cause, and, rocks like hell. Following his solo albums, Lifer and Clean Getaway, his Sobering Times just dropped wide and has already garnered two hits on Little Steven's Underground Garage and one Coolest Song in The World. To get a signed copy of the CD and some Byrd swag and for all things Ricky https://www.rickybyrd.com/ In 2017, he received the Drug-Free Heroes Award, the Faces, and Voices 2019 Voice of Recovery Award, and the 2019 Italian American of Distinction Award, presented by Governor Cuomo. So very proud of this rockin' pal. Basically an old Borscht Belt Jew at heart, this RockBoy is all about making music, helping people get sober, reading Dorothy Parker, laughing at Phil Rosenthal, and Entenmann's chocolate anything. As a sober woman in recovery, Ricky’s plight, his passion, his stories, and his hair, are close to my heart. We now party like it’s 1869. My kinda fun. Sobering Times is an honest and intimate reflection of recovery delivered through his signature brand of Rock ‘N’ Roll. As Goldmine Magazine states “...The Faces and The Rolling Stones with a dash of Otis...It rocks like a b*tch. His vocals are the best of his career...early indications make it seem likely that this will be his career statement.” Following the path he carved with his 2017 album Clean Getaway, Sobering Times (produced by Ricky Byrd and Bob Stander) continues his mission to deliver the message of hope to those recovering from addiction. He expresses the roller coaster of emotions and every day trials of recovery, from hitting rock bottom, to the gratitude of surviving and thriving in a sober life. On Sobering Times, Byrd is joined by an all-star cast of musicians: Bob Stander (bass guitar, percussion), Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes (keyboards/ accordion/background vocals), Steve Holley (of Wings / Ian Hunter / Joe Cocker, contributed drums to most of the album), Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel, drums), Rich Pagano (The Fab Faux, session drummer), Thommy Price (Joan Jett, Billy Idol, Mink DeVille, drums) and Christine “The Beehive Queen” Ohlman (vocalist, Saturday Night Live band). Additionally, he collaborated with Richie Supa (“I Come Back Stronger”) and Willie Nile, who duets with Byrd on “Recover Me”, in addition to Emily Duff, who co-wrote “Ain’t Gonna Live Like That.” Fittingly, he also recorded a cover of Merle Haggard’s “The Bottle Let Me Down”. Byrd chose the Sobering Times release date of September 25 as it’s also the 33rd anniversary of the day he started his sober journey. Having lived through the disease of addiction himself, Byrd has made it his mission to help others as a recovery coach and drug/alcohol counselor, who visits schools, rehab facilities, and detention and detox centers to perform, talk, and lead recovery music groups. In fact, he gave away almost 2500 copies of Clean Getaway at these facilities, so clients could take the message of recovery home with them. He dedicates Sobering Times to all of those who struggle with addiction, as well as the recovery warriors who help those who are struggling, those that support a clean and sober lifestyle, and of course, those that still love loud and proud Rock ‘N’ Roll. “As far as third acts go, I couldn't be more grateful for mine,” says Byrd. “I get to use the undeniable power of R'n'R to spread the recovery message to those that are struggling....pretty... pretty... pretty good.”

Seasoned touring- guitarist for the stars, Ricky Byrd (Joan Jett, Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter and more), talks with Marc Lee Shannon about recovery, recording and rocking before and after getting clean over 30 years ago. This Bronx-born musician tells the story of growing up a skinny, frightened kid and finding substances that would give him courage to feel the confidence that would get him up on the stage. Eventually, while on tour, the habit caused him to actually blow a hole in his lung, and near-death moment brought him clarity. "Total abstinence is the the only thing for me because I had the need to not feel. After the fist hit I felt like a new man, unfortunately that new man wanted another hit!"Listen in while Ricky talks about his new record, Clean Getaway, about getting certified as a Licensed Peer Recovery Support person, and about sharing his talents and songs during performance in treatment facilities and recovery music groups. It's a tantalizing episode about spreading the gospel of the addiction blues and the good news about how it feels to play straight and sober.

For an hour + I forgot there's a pandemic and that I haven't heard live music in 5 months. Liberty Devitto filled the air and my heart with rock 'n roll. One of the greatest drummers of all time, Billy Joel's, Liberty Devitto, now bestselling author of LIBERTY, Life, Billy & the Pursuit of Happiness (https://amzn.to/2CP8qrg ) sat down and banged it out with me. We talked Billy, of course, the reconicliation, the angry years, the beginning, 30 yrs of crazy fun and brilliant creativity, to growing up and cooling down. We talked his whacky, wild, family of origin, his beautiful successful daughters, and his baby, at 3, a Beatles aficionado ... Vanilla Fudge, touring with Mitch Ryder as a teen, arenas, stadiums, Steve Winwood, The Lords of 52nd Street, Richie Cannata, Russell Javors, NYC Hit Squad and Clean Getaway with Ricky Byrd, Little Kids Rock, writing a bestseller and now playing Drive-ins, the new not normal concert venues. Affable, entertaining, warm and real, I love this man, and can't wait to see him and hear him play again. Everything I was excited about doing this summer has been canceled, and I’m now suffering from a lack of things to look forward to. I was wondering if you could recommend a great series that has another book coming out a few/several months from now so I can read the book(s) that already exist and then eagerly anticipate the next installment! Some things I like include high fantasy, woman (or nonbinary) authors and characters, LGBTQness, and audiobooks. Thanks! –Emma 2. Hello! My mom is an avid reader, definitely gravitating toward mystery/thrillers, historical fiction and most specifically anything by Eric Larson. She has already devoured his newest book, The Splendid and the Vile, and has read nearly all of his backlist. Do you have any author comps for Larson that I could pass on to her? Thanks!! –Rachael 3. I’m looking for books that would make great read-alouds for my 8th grade English/Language Arts class. I’ve been teaching for five years, and I’ve always done the same read-alouds each year: Love that Dog by Sharon Creech, Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes, A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, and Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth. I’d like to change it up with some newer books as the ones I mentioned above are aging out; as my students have pointed out: “None of these characters even have a cellphone!” Some preferences I have for our read-alouds: interesting characters that help my students experience lives that are different from their own (I teach in a small town in Minnesota) minimum cursing (see above about teaching in a small town in Minnesota) engaging storylines that get students excited to hear what happens next bonus points if the chapters are shorter so I have natural stopping points each day Thanks for your help! Love the show! –Grace 4. Hello! I love the podcast and I have gotten soooo many good recommendations (both from a couple of asks that I have made previously and just from listening every week). I recently lured my wife into being a bookworm (I even got her on Libby, the proudest moment of my life!). She has gone from maybe reading 1 book in a year to tearing through about 30 books and graphic novels (the gateway drug!) in about 3 months time. The problem: she’s starting to run out of material! She’s pretty set for the next few months, but might run out of books to read over the summer. Her birthday is August 2nd and so I’m hoping to pick up some new books for her by then. She LOVES Star Wars and that is what the vast majority of her reading so far has been. She is looking for ideas for books, especially if they are series, outside of Star Wars, but that give her some of the same things that she loves about Star Wars. Things she likes about Star Wars: all of the aliens and creatures, good vs. evil, and the world-building. Things that she didn’t specifically identify when I asked her what she liked, but are definitely elements that I know she likes: strong female leads and found family (but who doesn’t love those things?!). Bonus for good queer representation, which is very obviously lacking in Star Wars. She is a bit of a weeny and doesn’t like things that are scary (sometimes Doctor Who episodes scare her, so you be the judge…) or have a lot of gore. Some things that I have thought to recommend to her were the Becky Chambers books and Saga (if she ever thought that she could get past the violence and gore). Thank you!!!!!!!! –Heidi 5. Hi! I am a new listener and am thoroughly enjoying listening to the show! I just got married in November and my husband and I will be honeymooning to Austria at the end of June. I LOVE travel books in general, but would really like to read some fiction/historical fiction about Vienna and Salzburg. We are also going to try to do a day trip to Bratislava as well, so I would happily welcome a book set in Slovakia. Thank you! –Kira 6. I’m doing the 2020 Read Harder Challenge and I’m looking for a book for the disabled protagonist task, specifically a Native American protagonist. I’m Native and one of my New Year’s reading resolutions is to read more books by Native Americans, so I’m trying to choose books by/about Native Americans for as many of the challenge tasks as possible. I’ve read Absolute True Story of a Part-Time Indian, but I’m trying to avoid reading any more Sherman Alexie since the MeToo stories about him. Thanks in advance. –Cheryl 7. Hello! I was wondering if you have any recommendations for books where adoption is a main theme. Many of the books I’ve found are a bit outdated or cheesy and instructional. I recently pickup up Nichole Chung’s “All You Can Ever Know”. I also found “Motherhood So White” on book riot’s website. My husband and I are starting to look into adoption as a way to be parents and I’d love to find some insightful stories or memoirs (or even fiction), preferably that feature diversity of story, race, and background. Thanks in advance for the help! –Lauren Books Discussed The Khorasan Archives by Ausma Zehanat Khan (tw slavery) The Poppy War series by RF Kuang (tw: war crimes incl. rape and genocide) SFF Yeah: Most Anticipated Series episode The Dead Duke, His Secret Wife, and the Missing Corpse by Piu Marie Eatwell TheRiver of Doubt by Candice Millard Escape from Aleppo by NH Senzai (tw war) Clean Getaway by Nic Stone Bonds of Brass by Emily Skrutskie Murderbot by Martha Wells The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders The Tobacconist by Robert Seethaler, trans Charlotte Collins (tw Nazis) A Perfect Spy by John Le Carré Fool’s Crow by James Welch (rec’d by Jeff) (tw war crimes) There There by Tommy Orange (TW: gun violence and rape) Welcome Home, edited by Eric Smith Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson

Nic Stone is the critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling author of titles such as DEAR MARTIN, JACKPOT, CLEAN GETAWAY and her latest DEAR JUSTYCE. Angie Thomas, author of THE HATE U GIVE, called Dear Martin "a must-read", while THE FAULT IN OUR STARS author John Green described it as "Powerful and wrenching."
This week on Deadline City we have Clean Getaway author, Nic Stone joining the Author Salon! Nic Stone writes in multiple genres and age groups and we pick her brain about how she keeps track of everything. We all have so many stories to tell, but how do you decide a particular story is "the one"? What is Nic's method? How do you figure out who the protagonist is, or what age groups your audience is? All of these things come into play, as well as our usual writer shenanigans. Support the show (http://Ko-fi.com/deadlinecity)

Author Nic Stone and narrator Dion Graham make a powerful team. Stone’s newest audiobook CLEAN GETAWAY came out this winter, and it’s another Earphones Award winner narrated by Dion Graham. We thought this was the perfect time to revisit our conversation with the author and narrator duo. Host Jo Reed spoke with both Stone and Graham when their audiobook, DEAR MARTIN, first released. Bringing an author and narrator together allows for a fascinating perspective on the creative forces behind audiobooks we love. Listen for a moving conversation about race and trauma, and learn more about Stone’s character Justyce McAllister, who chronicles his anger and trauma following a dangerous encounter with the police. DEAR MARTIN combines Justyce’s letters addressed to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with in-class conversations told from many perspectives. It’s a tricky audiobook to narrate on multiple levels, and Graham rises to the challenge to show Justyce’s depth of character and inner conflict. Steve Cooper talks with musician Ricky Byrd. Ricky is a well-recognized musician who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the lead guitarist and former original member of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. He played with Joan from 1981-1992, and has also recorded or toured with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny and many other talented musicians since that time. He most recently has been combining his love for music with his passion and mission to help carry the torch of change surrounding the stigma of drug and alcohol use. His recent album Clean Getaway focuses on recovery lyrics which moves people to laugh, cry and think.
An employee of a dry-cleaner was raped and murdered in the store, and investigators thought themselves fortunate to have two eyewitnesses. Their descriptions were similar but not identical, and the prime suspect didn't come close to resembling that person. So police turned to forensic science for the answers they needed. To learn more about how HLN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
Passion drives music…the deeper the passion, the larger the ripple effect. Rock and Roll Hall Of Famer Ricky Byrd founder of the non-profit Clean Getaway has released Clean Getaway (Recovery Troubadour Records), a collection of 12 songs evoking the intricacies and emotions behind addiction and recovery. The album is available via CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and all other online stores, with a portion of the sales going to the Clean Getaway .Ricky Byrd has devoted himself to spreading the message of hope and possibilities through Rock and Roll. The mission of the Clean Getaway non-profit is to bring awareness, education, prevention and addiction resources to those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction through the healing power of music. It does this through Concert Events, Music Outreach Sessions and Early Education and Prevention programs. However, as far as Ricky is concerned, Recovery is the special guest here. “An important part of this journey is giving back and spreading the message,” he says. “I do my best talking through music…as a recovery troubadour.”
Alan talks with Ricky Byrd - "recovery troubadour." and a musician who is honored to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a former original member of Joan Jett and The Blackhearts in April of 2015. Ricky spreads the message of hope and possibilities through Rock and Roll. The mission of the Clean Getaway - non-profit that was founded by Ricky, is to bring awareness, education, prevention and addiction resources to those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction through the healing power of music.
The lifestyle of the music industry has proven deadly for so many people over the years. Wikipedia lists the names of over 100 pop artists who have lost their lives to overdose since the 60s. Greg’s guest today knows the story all too well having been the lead guitarist for Joan Jett and the Blackhearts during their hey-day. Ricky Byrd was living the life of a rock star until he almost lost his life and decided it was time to get clean. Today, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee Ricky Byrd has been clean and sober for thirty one years. Over the last few years Ricky realized he could combine his music and recovery to create songs that are useful to people struggling with addiction. The result is Clean Getaway, both the name of a 501(c)(3) non-profit Ricky founded to reach addicts through the connective power of music, AND a brand new album of songs related to his experience with addiction and recovery. Ricky talks with Greg about his brush with death, recovery and using his platform to give back and help others find sobriety.
Liberty and I could've both used a cocktail at the top of the show, but we laughed instead. I thought Mercury went direct. Yo. A few tech glitches couldn't stop the force that's Liberty Devitto. Drummer for Billy Joel for 30 years, Lib's been on 150 million albums sold, while between touring and recording with Billy he was running off with Stevie Nicks, The Beach Boys, Karen Carpenter, Phoebe Snow, Meat Loaf, and countless others. Lib shared how Only The Good Die Young did not become a reggae song... thanks for that Lib, and how Moving Out was born. There's a great Steve Winwood yearbook Story. Lots about Ringo who sparked him, and then Dino Danelli, of The Rascals. Liberty took us through his High School band, where meeting girls was the incentive... passing Bill Joe, as he was called then, nightly, aware of each other's bands, but not friends, until Billy requested a New York drummer (rock speak for "hits hard.") Liberty was the man. How he got the gig.. and how he kept it, and then shockingly lost it without a word. What's happened since and what's going on now for the 68-year-old daddy of a 1 1/2 yr old baby girl. His daughter Torrey who’s killing it on Chicago Med, another about the go out with Fleetwood Mac, a Nurse to be... and a baby who's marching. Not bad daddying right there. We talked The Slim Kings, Clean Getaway and The Lords of 52nd Street. Liberty's created drum riffs which are indelible in millions upon millions of minds... he's taken a few liberties, too. One of the greatest drummers who's ever picked up the stix, having seen him play innumerable times, I can say he's my pic with confidence. The man's a killer... and a lover, a husband, a daddy. a friend... such worthy time, diggin' in. You don't have to like music, drummers, or Billy Joel, to love Liberty DeVitto. Who the fuck doesn't love music, drummers, and Billy Joel? Liberty is best known as the long time drummer for Billy Joel, which spanned 30 years. In addition to his work with Billy, Liberty's also been an active session and touring musician working with Carly Simon, Phoebe Snow, Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks, Rick Wakeman, Bob James, The Beach Boys, and Meat Loaf, to name but a few. A drummer’s drummer… he, along with Sax player Richie Cannata and the rest of the Billy Joel Band, were inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Liberty is an official supporter of Little Kids Rock, a nonprofit organization that provides free musical instruments and instruction to children in underserved public schools throughout the USA. Along with Billy Joel Band members, Richie Cannata, and Russell Javors, Liberty formed The Lords of 52nd Street and play their original hits. Additionally, along with Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Byrd, of the Blackhearts, Liberty plays with the NYC Hit Squad and Ricky’s Clean Getaway. More than all that, Liberty's a gas. Funny, great storyteller, devoted father and husband, and fabulous human being, we had a blast and laughed a shitton. You’ve given the final cut off, you’ve taken the last bow, but the show’s not really over until Elvis has most definitely left the building. In today’s episode you’ll find tips for talking to members of the audience, releasing your choir after a job well done, and celebrating afterwards. End your concert in a way that’s satisfying for your singers, your audience, and yourself. Listen: Click and Highlight to Tweet: Kids tend to think self-deprecation is a form of humility. It’s not. Show Notes: After the show Remain “ON” until you get in the car. Leave “briskly” to enhance “mystery” draw the curtain dismount the risers exit the hall Get back to the green room Address your choir Dismiss them to greet their people Greet your people ASAP Shake hands Take photos with the choir members if asked Kiss a baby If you feel awkward because no one is walking up to you, then walk up to them and say “Thank you for coming!’ This is not a time for parent/teacher conferences. Dismiss everything irrelevant by saying “I’d be happy to discuss this with you at another time. Email me your question?” Learn to accept a compliment “Thank you. I’m really glad you enjoyed it” Self-deprecation is NOT humility Learn how to respond to a criticism “Thank you. I’m really glad you enjoyed it” Keep it positive - “I see where you’re coming from.” Redirect: “What DID you enjoy?” Don’t engage negativity. Learn to reflect later With yourself With peers in the choir Recruit help to break down the performing area/reset the room This should not be the director’s job by themself Celebrate with people who support you. It feels good. It may be up to you to schedule this ahead of time 3 Key Takeaways: Leave like you mean it, not like you are unsure of what to do next Two main groups need your attention immediately after the concert: your singers and your audience. After the concert, it’s time to celebrate. Hold off on any critical analysis until the next day. Resources/links Mentioned: It’s time for a contest! I met Ricky Byrd back in the daze… when we were both in a daze… I was booking the Rock’ N Roll Café on Bleecker Street. Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage with Joan Jett ~ Blackheart lead guitarist, playing those iconic riffs in the great MTV Music Video Days. Ricky Ricky has recorded, toured and/or has performed with Roger Daltrey, Ian Hunter, Southside Johnny, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Mavis Staples, Billy Squier, Darlene Love, Ronnie Spector, Brian Wilson, Steve Miller, Graham Nash, Don Felder, Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zant, Mick Taylor, Dion, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Bramlett, Billie Joe Armstrong, Bill Medley, Paul Shaffer, Smokey Robinson and many others. Two years ago Ricky was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. An honor which befalls the very best, and the very few. More importantly, 29 years ago, he got sober. For the past 9 years, using music to help others follow in kind has been his life’s passion, and now, his work. Ricky Byrd’s Clean Getaway, a non-profit he started, provides concert events, music outreach sessions, and early education and prevention programs, to raise awareness about the disease of addiction and to provide resources for those suffering from drug and alcohol addiction. More info here: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/rickybyrd As a sober woman in recovery, Ricky’s plight and his passion are close to my heart. We now party like it’s 1869. Basically an old Borscht Belt Jew at heart, this RockBoy is all about rock, bling and egg creams. We talk rock, rock stars, getting high, and getting straight. A lotta laughin' was goin' on... 00:00:00 - Don't look now, but crocodiles have learned to hide themselves using sticks. You see that stick over to your left? Well that's actually a crocodile. You almost got eaten just now. We saved you. You're welcome. Keep listening. 00:13:50 - We can't promise that drinks will keep you safe from sneaky croc attacks, but if you're going to get eaten you might as well enjoy yourself until then, eh? Patrick enjoys a Fireside Chat that he's disappointed to learn has already been consumed by Ryan. Ben forgot his drink. Ryan kills the last of some old bourbon paired with an Ale8One in preparation for heading to Panama. 00:22:15 - Speaking of Ryan's last days in the United States, the preview for this week's Trailer Trash Talk purports to show the titular The Last Days On Mars, which don't seem to be going that well if space zombies are any indication. This reminds Ryan of his friend's blog, and Patrick of an old game. Good times. 00:33:11 - To escape space zombies, it could be necessary to leave the galaxy altogether, but what would such a journey require? Ben schools us all on the speeds necessary to escape the Milky Way itself. 00:47:07 - As far as the Paleopals are concerned, PaleoPOWs pull as hard as the galactic core. Ryan starts with a new recurring donation from Rebecca C. Thanks, Rebecca! Patrick has a longer missive from Tamsen P. about Alaskan fossils, naming new species, and flyers posted around UCSC. Ben ends with an awesome note from Angie W. about her nonverbal autistic daughter Sarah, who has the good taste to enjoy our silly little podcast. Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!
