The Kathryn Zox Show

Kathryn interviews Author Kate Andersen Brower.Elizabeth Taylor was the biggest star of the 20th century. She was the first actor to successfully break the million-dollar mark when she negotiated her starring role in Cleopatra and she championed independent filmmaking with her Oscar-winning performance in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. She took on the AIDS epidemic when few would and she created an iconic business, all while facing tremendous loss and waging her own private battle with chronic pain and addiction. NY Times bestselling author Kate Andersen Brower takes readers through an epic journey into the world of the real Elizabeth Taylor, exploring her undeniable and enduring influence on pop culture and modern-day celebrity as we now know it. She is a CNN contributor, a former CBS News staffer and Fox News producer. She has written for the NY Times, Vanity Fair, and the Washington Post.Kathryn also interviews CEO and Strategist Neil Foote. The history of Black Americans is filled with a powerful list of examples of highly successful entrepreneurs, not all of whom are well known. Recent National Association of Black Journalist Hall of Fame inductee Neil Foote shares with us 10 Black entrepreneurs who sold their businesses to major U.S. corporations for sums ranging from tens of millions to billions of dollars. Among these profitable success stories are Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Richelle Dennis and Robert L. Johnson. With these kinds of numbers being thrown around, we have to wonder what aspiring entrepreneurs could learn from these legendary moguls. What are some of their common characteristics? The Rosé Hour Podcast

Hey There, Friends! This week we chat with our new cousin Marcus Johnson, an independent Billboard-ranked musician, NAACP Image Award nominee, owner of FLO Brands and FLO Wine, JD and MBA, philanthropist, father, friend... and so much more! What is FLO (For the Love Of)? It represents the journey through which we discover those things in life that fulfill us and make each experience a little better. For the love of life, self, happiness, passion, joy…love itself. While pursuing his JD and MBA at Georgetown, he independently produced and distributed his first CD (Lessons in Love), which sold more than 40,000 units; a phenomenal success for an unknown independent artist's debut release. This album helped him launch his career as a renowned jazz keyboardist/pianist, and later, he released his second CD (Inter Alia), with staggering success This success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson, who invested and partnered with Marcus to establish Marimelj Entertainment Group. Under their partnership, MEG's label Three Keys Music housed Studio 8121, a full-service recording studio, and two music publishing companies: Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing. As head of Three Keys Music, Johnson produced and released on the Three Keys Music label national jazz artists: Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams, neo-soul songstress, Zahzarah; and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair. To date, Marcus has released more than fifteen Billboard charted CDs, and has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) Anthology, which consisted of three distinct CDs -- FLO Chill, FLO Romance and FLO Standards - all chart Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously. The release of Poetically Justified (2009) and This is How I Rock (2011), which were Top 20 Contemporary Jazz CDs, solidified Marcus Johnson as the heir apparent to the funky urban groove music style and sound made famous by legendary jazz greats, George Duke and Herbie Hancock. FLO Wines FLO {for the love of...} represents the journey through which we discover those things in life that fulfill us and make each experience a little better; for the love of life, self, happiness, passion, joy…love itself. FLO Wine is but one expression. Named a top 10 Celebrity Wine by USA Today. Marcus Johnson's Sips & Sounds are uniquely curated tasting experiences featuring sips from Flo Wine; varietals Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and our new Rosé, and Jazz sounds by Marcus Johnson with a special music set customized to the region/location we're in. The Sips + Sounds tasting experience strives to go “Behind the Apron” with collaborations highlighting diverse/minority-owned catering companies and/ or chefs that create exclusive culinary pairings with Flo Wine. ROSÉ The Rosé gives bright, floral aromas of lilac and rose petal with flavors of fresh strawberry and raspberry on the palate. It is light in body with refreshing acidity and a crisp, clean finish. CHARDONNAY The Chardonnay uses minimal oak, allowing the bright fruit to take center stage. Well-balanced, it offers Lemon and citrus notes with a hint of green apple. Flavors of tropical fruit, baked fig and vanilla with buttery overtones on the finish. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/therosehourpodcast/support

The Church leaders gathered together at the Council of Nicaea and voted the "word of God" into existence. The final version of the Christian Bible was not voted on at the Council of Nicaea, per se. The Church leaders didn't finish editing the "holy" scriptures until the Council of Trent when the Catholic Church pronounced the Canon closed. However, it seems the real approving editor of the Bible was not God but Constantine!... "Therefore, one can easily argue that the first Christian Bible was commissioned, paid for, inspected and approved by a pagan emperor for church use." In the landmark work by H.G. Wells, The Outline of History, Vol. I, pages 462-463, we read, "It (the Council of Nicaea) marks the definite entry upon the stage of human affairs of the Christian Church and of Christianity as it is generally understood in the world to-day. It marks the exact definition of Christian teaching by the Nicene Creed." Reads from "The Bible's Ungodly Origins" by Robert L. Johnson

Key information will be shared in regard to protecting land and ensuring a family’s land ownership legacy.“Heirs’ Property refers to real property that passes from one person to another upon each person's death,” says Attorney Vangela M. Wade, President of The Wade Law Firm. “In most cases, without a Will or other legal instrument transferring ownership to that person's heirs, each heir then has an undivided interest in that property. Over time, this method of inheritance can lead to lack of ‘clear title’ and has the potential of diminishing the value of the property.” A lack of "clear title" makes property less marketable for sale or lease, can interfere with securing loans, grants and government assistance, and is the leading cause of black involuntary land loss. This FREE seminar, led by Attorney Wade, with special guests State Rep. Whether on the stage, in the classroom, in the community, or as a father, Marcus Johnson leaves a mark wherever he lands. Musician, Entrepreneur, Professor, Author, Motivational Speaker, he is the consummate dreamer-doer. He believes that investing in the community and in one’s self is the best way to solve some of life’s most pressing questions: Why are we here? What is our purpose? In answering these questions for himself, Marcus has successfully navigated the realms of music, business, education, and entrepreneurship. Marcus spent his undergraduate years at Howard University and went on to earn his JD/MBA degree from Georgetown University. As a graduate student, he partnered with Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and entrepreneur Robert L. Johnson to start Marimelj Entertainment Group. This entity later became Three Keys Music, an independent record label that produced over 25 albums by several internationally-known artists. As a musician and independent artist, Marcus has released 18 studio albums (seven of which have appeared on Billboard’s Top 10 Contemporary Jazz chart), garnered an NAACP Image Award nomination for Jazz Album of the Year, and has toured the world, performing at various music festivals and venues both domestic and abroad, including shows in Paris, Ghana, St. Lucia, and Bermuda. An entrepreneur, Marcus is CEO and Founder of FLO (For the Love of) Brands, which houses his most recent venture, FLO Wine, LLC, and has enabled him to combine his passion for music with his love of good wine. USA Today recently included FLO Wine on its list of Top 10 Celebrity Wines. As a result of his business pursuits, Marcus was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration in 2004 and currently serves as the Entrepreneur in Residence with the Greater Washington Urban League. He currently teaches entrepreneurship at Howard University. He has also had the opportunity to teach on business-related topics at Georgetown University's Center for Professional Development, Bowie State University, and Elmira College. In this conversation, Marcus talks about Flo Wine, and what's driving him today. We discuss his music and the biggest downsides to being a musician. We discuss the impact of the team he has around him, and how he goes about attracting the right people to help his organization grow.

In this episode we speak with Marcus Johnson.  Marcus is an independent Billboard-ranked musician and NAACP Image Award-nominated jazz keyboardist and pianist. He is also the CEO and Founder of Flo Brands, LLC and more recently Flo Wine, LLC. Marcus has combined an eminently successful musical career with his love of wine by marrying the two in a unique endeavor.   Over the last decade, Marcus Johnson has released 15 successful studio albums.  On Pandora, Marcus receives 5.1 million spins per year with 2,000 new stations added each month, and his music receives a 74% “thumbs ups” rating verses an average of 56%.  Johnson is the owner of a music label, Three Keys Music, and has emerged as one of the young lions of the “DIY” music world.  His unique self-taught style of piano play has earned him distinction among his peers, praise from the media and accolades across the music industry.  Marcus is on the cutting edge of ‘Euro Jazz' having formed JURIS, a musical collaboration with acclaimed Parisian DJ and producer Young Pulse. The duo quickly developed a name within the international music community, enjoying large-scale performances and preparing a Q3 release of their latest project entitled “Eiffel Tower.” Johnson's FLO Brands, LLC,tm is aptly titledFor the Love Of ; LLC. ™ FLO began as a musical publishing, production, and lifestyle branding company to house all of Johnson's musical and entrepreneurial ventures.  However the scope and reach of the company has expanded delving into winemaking, sourcing grapes and production in California.  FLO Brands launched FLO Wines, LLC in March 2012.  FLO Wine is capturing the taste buds of wine-lovers from California to South Carolina. These two albums led to Johnson signing with N2K Encoded Music with whom he released several CDs until the label was sold in 1998. Johnson's success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson who invested in Marcus and his newfound company, Marimelj Entertainment Group (MEG).  Under their partnership, MEG's label, Three Keys Music based in the Washington, DC metro area, established its own full service recording studio, Studio 8121; and two music publishing companies, Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing.  Marcus was responsible for releasing and producing CDs on the Three Keys label for national jazz artists Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair.  While producing music for the aforementioned artists, Marcus also released several critically acclaimed albums:Inter Alia,Chocolate CityGroovin';Coming Back Around;Urban Groove,In Person: Live at Blues Alley,Just Doing What I Do,Smooth Jazz Christmas andIn Concert for a Cause, all charting at Top 20 or more on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Charts.  Marcus has released 15 Billboard-charted CDs. He has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) CDs which consisted of three distinct albums: FLO Chill,FLO Romance andFLO Standards ,  all charting Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously.  Johnson's previous solo 2007 release, The Phoenix, was widely lauded by jazz critics and aficionados alike and like Johnson's previous CDs, it peaked in the Top 20 of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. Johnson's next Top 20 Contemporary jazz releases, the unique and multi-facetedPoetically Justified (2009) andThis Is How I Rock (2011) solidified Marcus Johnson as heir apparent to the George Duke and Herbie Hancock style of funky urban groove music.  Creatively, Johnson continues to evolve as an artist. With the release of his 2012FLO: Holiday  CD and the ongoing collaboration with famed Parisian Producer DJ Pulse – as the musical duo “Juris” – he has managed to maintain his traditional jazz roots, while also remaining on the forefront of the expanding “Euro Jazz” movement. His music continues to enforce and define his musical legacy as a “jazz movement for all people”.    Johnson is also evolving as an innovative wine expert.
