Welcome to the latest episode of Lunch with Shelley with today's special guest Harry Schnipper. Harry is the owner of Blues Alley, the world renowned and oldest continuously operating Jazz Supper Club in America! Nestled in the heart of Georgetown, Blues Alley – which is celebrating its' 60th anniversary - has been referred to as the house that Dizzy built, (that would be Dizzy Gillespie of course), and it has hosted some of the most notable jazz musicians in the world, as well as many favorite local musicians too. At its helm, Harry is an expert producer, lecturer, educator and presenter of nightly nightclub entertainment. Over the course of many decades, he has perfected the art of curating his nightclub calendar while simultaneously fulfilling the role of his own non-profit jazz music education organization. We are at Harry's and my frequent lunch spot – the dug out at Billy Martins - so join us for a conversation about all things Jazz, great DC venues, famous artists, great music and more at www.lunchwithshelley.com or wherever you get your favorite podcast, and in the meantime Peace, Love and Lunch!

I am watching the Taubman Technique videos. Actually, I am absolutely consuming this material. Friends, it's what you are searching for in giving freedom and new levels to your playing. On those tapes, there is an interesting quote of Dorothy Taubman some of which appears in the publicly available documentary, The Choreography of the Hands. (We have it available on the Golandsky Institute YouTube channel). She says something to the effect that teachers must provide answers and direction to these sincere, talented and earnest people who are studying the piano. It seems that Taubman really wanted to provide answers to students. Like for example, how do you put your finger on the key? Why do you get really tired playing? How do you play scales? How do you move in an arpeggio? The Taubman Approach through the Golandsky Institute and its certified teachers has answers. The Taubman Approach has solutions for jazz pianists. It opens up possibilities never seen before. Today's guest, jazz pianist Adam Klipple, gives us a window into the artistic freedom that this paradigm can give. Listen to the full episode because we talk about a ton of amazing ideas. And - Adam on a fun departure from the conversation, heads to the piano and plays! Wow. “The body is capable of fulfilling all pianistic demands without a violation of its nature if the most efficient ways are used; pain, insecurity, and lack of technical control are symptoms of incoordination rather than a lack of practice, intelligence, or talent."Dorothy TaubmanAdam Klipple is a student of John BloomfieldVisit Adam Klipple's website at: https://adamklipple.com/Adam Klipple, who has been described as "a standout pianist who has gone to school on McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor and earned his degree," plays piano, Hammond organ, sampler, and a variety of vintage keyboards. He currently records and performs with Veronica Swift, and is a member of the legendary jazz rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears.Adam has recorded and performed onstage with the likes of Ghostface Killah, Lauryn Hill, Graham Haynes, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Craig Harris, Joe Bowie's Defunkt, Sekou Sundiata, Marc Ribot, John Medeski, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Carla Cook, Dave Fiuczynski, David Gilmore, Josh Roseman, Peter Apfelbaum, Jay Rodriguez, Groove Collective, and Smokey Robinson. He has appeared at renowned venues including the Blue Note, Iridium, the Jazz Standard, Blues Alley, and the Knitting Factory, and at jazz festivals around the world. Also a composer and arranger, Adam has earned grants from Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Arts International, Meet the Composer, and the U.S. Department of State, enabling him to tour and teach master classes in southeast Asia, the Pacific Rim, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. The Golandsky Institute's mission is to provide cutting-edge instruction to pianists based on the groundbreaking work of Dorothy Taubman. This knowledge can help them overcome technical and musical challenges, cure and prevent playing-related injuries, and lead them to achieve their highest level of artistic excellence. Please visit our website at: www.golandskyinstitute.org.

By now, most people are familiar with the concept of cultural appropriation. But many questions still remain about cultural appropriation between minority groups. This is hardly a straightforward question, and the nuances that exist between various people groups can be discussed endlessly. But is there a "quick and dirty" way to describe what happens when two non-dominant cultures exhibit cultural insensitivity towards one another? A native of Hong Kong, Henry Wong has lived in the U.S. since attending high school at St. John's Preparatory School in Minnesota. He attended Penn State University as a Biology major, and worked in a neurology lab at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 1990, his hobby took over, and he founded the trendsetting record store An die Musik in Towson. It was the first in the nation to sell CDs without the long cardboard boxes and the first to establish listening stations for any disc in the store, earning them such attention as an article in Newsweek Magazine. He also established partnerships with organizations that contracted him to sell CDs during their performance, including the BSO and Baltimore Opera Company, and in DC with the Kennedy Center, Blues Alley and many Embassies. In addition, he staged regular CD signings and live performances and refreshments in the retail store.Reacting to changes in the retail music industry, he moved the business to Mt. Vernon in 1997, and added live music presentations under the moniker An Die Musik Live. The venue is an intimate listening room on the second floor of an historic Baltimore townhouse, located in the heart of the Mt. Vernon Cultural District. Voted several times as one of the top 100 jazz venues in the world by Downbeat Magazine, An die Musik Live has presented over 4,500 shows.Long before the current pandemic, Wong has had to innovate and re-engineer the business in response to economic and social challenges, including increased competition by big box retailers, 9/11, music downloading, the housing market bust, and Baltimore's civil unrest. By always operating as part of the community—and in service to musicians—people have rallied around his efforts to remain a vibrant part of Baltimore's arts scene. His latest innovation is adapting his business to live streaming concerts. He has relied on friends, consulted tech industry leaders, and recruited Peabody Institute sound engineering graduate students to create the model and continually improve it. But it's more than just a way to remain open for business—he encourages audience members to add donations to further help the artists. In addition, he has been consulted by other arts organizations who are navigating the same challenges.Image creditCreators & Guests Rob Lee - Host Henry Wong - Guest The Truth In This Art, hosted by Rob Lee, explores contemporary art and cultural preservation through candid conversations with artists, curators, and cultural leaders about their work, creative processes and the thinking that goes into their creativity. Spring isn't a date on the calendar. It's more of a feeling. A warm one, if you're lucky. For me, the vernal equinox is rarely the starter's pistol. I don't hear that big bang until Herself asks whether her Soma Double Cross is ready to ride after a long winter's nap on its hook in the garage. By that reckoning, spring arrived in The Duck! City on April 9, Easter Sunday. It was a few degrees short of ideal — I like to think of spring as that time when I can unsheath the arms and knees, charge those solar batteries, collect a little free vitamin D. But if we had to roll out in arm and knee warmers, so what? As you know, you go to ride with the spring you have, not the spring you might want or wish to have at a later time. During this special repeat episode of "First Voices Radio," Anne Keala Kelly sits in for Host Tiokasin Ghosthorse. Her guest for the full hour is Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie (Cree). Since her groundbreaking debut, It's My Way! (1964), Buffy has been a trailblazer and a tireless advocate, an innovative artist, and a disrupter of the status quo. Buffy has spent her whole life creating, and her artistry, humanitarian efforts, and Indigenous leadership have made her a unique force in the music industry. In 1969, she made one of the world's first electronic vocal albums; in 1982 she became the only Indigenous person to win an Oscar; she spent five years on Sesame Street where she became the first woman to breastfeed on national television. She's been blacklisted and silenced. She's written pop standards sung and recorded by the likes of Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Donovan, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes. She penned "Universal Soldier," the definitive anti-war anthem of the 20th century. Buffy Sainte-Marie is an icon who keeps one foot firmly planted on either side of the North American border, in the unsurrendered territories that comprise Canada and the USA.Production Credits:Tiokasin Ghosthorse, Founder, Executive Producer and Host, First Voices RadioAnne Keala Kelly (Kanaka 'Oiwi), Guest Host and Audio EditorLiz Hill (Red Lake Ojibwe), ProducerMusic Selections:1. This is the first of two episodes featuring leaders still in the early phases of their trajectories. Entrepreneurs who founded their businesses fairly young, in underserved niches, and who are only a few years into their journey. Matt Wigler is a jazz musician who saw an opportunity in a specific entertainment market and launched a successful business. When that market was hit by the pandemic, he turned the sales experience he gained running his first business into a sales consulting business, and now he is the founder and CEO of two thriving companies. In this insightful conversation, he talks about how he spotted the opportunities, and the philosophy he followed in building his businesses. He offered some interesting parallels between the process of making music in a band and building and running a team. And he shared plenty of insight on how to build a bootstrapped business without any outside financing. Finally, as a jazz musician, he talked about one of his favorite recordings and what he learned from it. In this episode, Whitney sits down with Kendall Isadore, one of the first friends she made during her college years at Howard University. Together, they talk about Kendall’s powerful trio, The String Queens — a soulful and authentic strings trio that creates stimulating musical experiences that inspire diverse audiences to love, hope, feel, and imagine! Kendall shares the story of how The String Queens came to be; a story that is clearly orchestrated by God and full of right place, right time moments. But a moment that almost didn’t happen. Kendall talks about a brief moment after college where, mad at God for not delivering on his promise to use her sound to inspire people, she stopped playing her violin altogether. But God spoke a word that would change everything. “Before that year was up, God had a word for me. He said, ‘It’s actually not about you.’” - Kendall Isadore And with that, she picked her instrument back up. Kendall agreeing to trust God at that moment and saying yes to doing it His way opened up the entire world to her. Leading her to some of the world's greatest stages such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. The duo discusses Kendall’s mission as a Black woman orchestra teacher; an experience neither of them had growing up in music education programs. Kendall then shares that her goal is to give her students a world-class education because that’s what they deserve no matter their background and even if they don’t aspire to become professional musicians. And in true Howard woman fashion, they end their conversation talking about social justice. In 2018 Kendall launched a social impact movement called Black Kings/Queens Matter, and with the events of 2020, she knew it was the perfect time to relaunch and inspire Black Kings and Queens. Kendall is truly making an impact. NYC press says she’s like Adele meets Diana Krall meets Bette Midler. Dare her. She’s headlined with Melissa Etheridge and Sarah McLachlan. She was Joan Rivers’ opening act. Come see why. Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. For all info, check out www.stephengordonmusic.com, as well as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram! The story of how Andy met Dennis Chambers started with a music performance he will never forget! Today, we learn how Dennis Chambers became the legendary drummer he is today. From his earliest memories of copying records, on a toy drum kit, to slinging tracks with the likes of John Scofield and Miles Davis, Dennis has a story to tell about everything and you won't stop listening! Like the music he plays, Dennis shares stories with a rhythm and flow that is music to our ears. Though Dennis is a self-taught musician, he states he learned from the best. He was so good, that his drumming appeared on a gospel record when he was just 7. As a young teen, James Brown was asked him to play in his band. The names just keep coming! Dennis has jammed with the likes of P Funk, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Stanley Clark, and Carlos Santana. Across the decades, across jazz, funk, soul, and rock and roll, Dennis has become a master chameleon of rhythm and style. Andy had the opportunity to hear Dennis perform at Blues Alley with Mike Stern, Tom Kennedy, and Randy Brecker – and to watch him play was unbelievable! While seeming completely calm and in control of his craft, Dennis can light up a stadium, like he did beginning as a teenager, during his Parliament Funkadelic days.. His experiences and memories could fill a book, but for now, we'll settle with a podcast episode. Listen to hear all of these stories of music and soul unfold. Episode Highlights: Dennis shares how he remains so very calm in the middle of mind-bending performances. With a Motown singer mom, music was in Dennis' DNA. Dennis first picked up a stick when he was 3 years old, and got his first drum kit when he was 4. We discuss how Dennis got his professional start at a very young age. Finding your sound is a constantly evolving process. Dennis shares all of his early influences and inspirations. Playing with P Funk gave him incredible exposure. Hear some of Dennis' favorite bass players to work with – he has worked with some of the greats! What's new on the horizon for Dennis. The motto coined years ago by the Art Ensemble of Chicago was "Great Black Music: Ancient to the Future." If a comparable vision and range applies to anyone in the blues field, it's doubtless Chris Thomas King, the restlessly inventive and eclectic bluesman who was a headliner a while ago at the Waterfront Blues Festival and is coming this Thursday with his full band for a four-night stand at the prestigious Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. He's perhaps best known for playing Delta blues icon Tommy Johnson in the prize-winning film, O Brother, Where Art Thou? -- and his haunting version of the Skip James song "Hard Times Killing Floor" that was featured in the film and the Grammy-winning "O Brother" soundtrack album that put roots music on the map in a way not seen since the folk revival of the 1960s.

Harry Schnipper on upcoming Ella Fitzgerald Voice Competition April 27 - 29, 2018 ~ ". . . Jazz Appreciation Month every April. . . an overreaching program and event that . . . our program at the Smithsonian Institution is April 27-29, 2018. . . The five finalists . . . come from Berlin, Germany; Toronto, Canada; Boston, Massachusetts; and two from the greater Washington Metropolitan Area . . .they'll all be congregating here for the final competition on Saturday, April 28th, at the Museum of American History. And the finalists will perform at Blues Alley . . . singing the Ella Sings Jobim Songbook from the 1981 seminal recording by Ella Fitzgerald." Harry Schnipper - Blues Alley, Owner and Jazz Preservationist, in studio interview with Andy Ockershausen Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town. And a little bit of blues in the background for a lot of blues in the foreground. We're glad to have the owner, the maitre d' and the chief bottle washer of Washington's most famous, if not the only Jazz club, Blues Alley. Harry Schnipper. Remember that you're in Our Town. Harry Schnipper: Pleased to see you and meet you again. Your name is synonymous with Washington media. Andy Ockershausen: And with Jazz, believe it or not. Paul Anthony | Bill Mayhugh | Felix Grant Harry Schnipper: And so was Paul Anthony and so was- Andy Ockershausen: Paul- Janice Iacona Ockershausen:Bill Mayhugh. Harry Schnipper: Bill Mayhugh. The names- Janice Iacona Ockershausen:Felix Grant. Harry Schnipper: Felix Grant. Yeah. I mean, the names are so written into the legend of lore of Washington D.C. that- Andy Ockershausen: The many times we have been connected with Blues Alley over the years because our broadcast station was a radio station that played music- Harry Schnipper: That's right. Andy Ockershausen: Now, nobody does that anymore. Harry Schnipper: No, but if Felix Grant- Andy Ockershausen: We use music as a big part of our format with a reason, and the reason was they attracted listeners. We had different music in the daytime than we had at night. People would listen to the station and say "It's a polygon of different kind of people and voices." But that's what we were. We were different people, and each of our guys ... We didn't let them call DJs. They were personalities, but they only had their music taste. Janice, my Janice Ockershausen, was Harden and Weavers producer for 10 years. She picked all their music, and they were picking music that their audience loved. And Blues Alley was so important to us. Harry Schnipper: Did you know that Felix Grant had a live stream back in the '80s out of Blues Alley? Janice Iacona Ockershausen:Yes. I don't know whether he was the owner or co-owner, Tommy Gwaltney, who was very connected to Felix Grant. I mean, they were buddies about everything, but Felix was a music guy from day one. You know Harry, I asked you to take your jacket off. I took mine off. You know, Felix would do his radio program, never took his jacket and tie off. No matter what happened, he always looked like a performer, and his reason was "I'm playing music for people who understand music, and therefore, I'm going to look good." And boy, he did it Harry. Harry Schnipper: I can agree with you. I with there was a personality like that today. But there isn't. You know, when I was-
Ben lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, located on the site of a 3000 year old Indian village. He creates his songs, art, and stories on sacred land, and feels the passage of those who came before him in the stone tools, jasper arrowheads, and clay pottery slipping down the river banks. Ben released his fourth CD, “Flesh and Bone,” on February 7, 2018. The story of how I met Dennis Chambers started with a music performance I will never forget. However, that’s not why I’m here. Today, we learn how Dennis Chambers became the legendary drummer he is today. From his earliest memories of copying records on a toy drum kit, to slinging tracks with the likes of John Scofield and Miles Davis, Dennis has a story to tell about everything. Like the music he plays, Dennis shares stories with a rhythm and flow that is music to my ears. You definitely do not want to miss out! Though Dennis is a self-taught musician, he claims he learned from the best. He was so good, that his drumming appeared on a gospel record when he was just 7. At 13 or 14, James Brown was asking him to play in his band. I had the opportunity to hear Dennis perform at Blues Alley with Mike Stern, Tom Kennedy, and Randy Brecker - and to watch him play is unbelievable While seeming completely calm and in control of his craft, Dennis can light up a stadium, like he did, beginning as a teenager, during his Parliament Funkadelic days.. When you get a guy like Dennis talking, expect your mind to melt a little bit. His experiences and memories could fill a book, but for now, we’ll settle with a podcast episode. Listen to hear all of these stories of music and soul unfold. Episode Highlights: Dennis shares how he remains so very calm in the middle of mind-bending performances. With a Motown singer mom, music was in Dennis’ DNA. Hear some of Dennis’ favorite bass players to work with - he has worked with some of the greats! What’s new on the horizon for Dennis. Connect with Dennis Dennis' Website Here are some of my favorite performances by Dennis: Dennis plays on David Letterman: Dennis gets FUNKY at Drum Camp: With Mike Stern, Tom Kennedy, and Randy Brecker: Dennis' Drum Solo - This is AMAZING!: Dennis is Sponsored by the following companies: Pearl | Zildjian | LP percussion | Ddrum electronics | Evans Drumheads

In this episode we speak with Marcus Johnson. Marcus is an independent Billboard-ranked musician and NAACP Image Award-nominated jazz keyboardist and pianist. He is also the CEO and Founder of Flo Brands, LLC and more recently Flo Wine, LLC. Marcus has combined an eminently successful musical career with his love of wine by marrying the two in a unique endeavor. Over the last decade, Marcus Johnson has released 15 successful studio albums. On Pandora, Marcus receives 5.1 million spins per year with 2,000 new stations added each month, and his music receives a 74% “thumbs ups” rating verses an average of 56%. Johnson is the owner of a music label, Three Keys Music, and has emerged as one of the young lions of the “DIY” music world. His unique self-taught style of piano play has earned him distinction among his peers, praise from the media and accolades across the music industry. Marcus is on the cutting edge of ‘Euro Jazz' having formed JURIS, a musical collaboration with acclaimed Parisian DJ and producer Young Pulse. The duo quickly developed a name within the international music community, enjoying large-scale performances and preparing a Q3 release of their latest project entitled “Eiffel Tower.” Johnson's FLO Brands, LLC,tm is aptly titledFor the Love Of ; LLC. ™ FLO began as a musical publishing, production, and lifestyle branding company to house all of Johnson's musical and entrepreneurial ventures. However the scope and reach of the company has expanded delving into winemaking, sourcing grapes and production in California. FLO Brands launched FLO Wines, LLC in March 2012. FLO Wine is capturing the taste buds of wine-lovers from California to South Carolina. To date retail partners in various states include Costco, Wal-Mart, Target, Whole Foods, Giant, Harris Teeter, Renaissance Hotels, Kroger, Aloft Hotels, Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC, Farm Fresh, and Total Wine. FLO Wine currently offers a FLO Red Californian Blend and a FLO California Chardonnay. As of July 2013 the company is launching its 2011 FLO California Moscato. A graduate of Howard University, Johnson went on to simultaneously earn both his MBA and Juris Doctorate degrees at Georgetown University. In 1995 during this demanding period at Georgetown, he also decided to independently produce and distribute his first jazz album, Lessons in Love, which sold more than 40,000 units, a major success for an unknown independent artist's debut release. One year later, he releasedInter Alia, with great acclaim. These two albums led to Johnson signing with N2K Encoded Music with whom he released several CDs until the label was sold in 1998. Johnson's success caught the attention of Black Entertainment Television (BET) founder and businessman Robert L. Johnson who invested in Marcus and his newfound company, Marimelj Entertainment Group (MEG). Under their partnership, MEG's label, Three Keys Music based in the Washington, DC metro area, established its own full service recording studio, Studio 8121; and two music publishing companies, Marimelj Music Publishing and Three Keys Music Publishing. Marcus was responsible for releasing and producing CDs on the Three Keys label for national jazz artists Michael Lington, Jaared Arosemena, Bobby Lyle, Nick Colionne, R&B singer, Alyson Williams and neo-soul songstress Yahzarah and smooth jazz Saxophonists Phillip Martin and Brian Lenair. While producing music for the aforementioned artists, Marcus also released several critically acclaimed albums:Inter Alia,Chocolate CityGroovin';Coming Back Around;Urban Groove,In Person: Live at Blues Alley,Just Doing What I Do,Smooth Jazz Christmas andIn Concert for a Cause, all charting at Top 20 or more on Billboard's Contemporary Jazz Charts. He has the distinction of having his groundbreaking 2008 Billboard Top 20 Contemporary Jazz FLO (For the Love Of) CDs which consisted of three distinct albums: FLO Chill,FLO Romance andFLO Standards , all charting Top 10 on Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts simultaneously. Johnson's previous solo 2007 release, The Phoenix, was widely lauded by jazz critics and aficionados alike and like Johnson's previous CDs, it peaked in the Top 20 of Billboard's Contemporary Jazz charts. Johnson's next Top 20 Contemporary jazz releases, the unique and multi-facetedPoetically Justified (2009) andThis Is How I Rock (2011) solidified Marcus Johnson as heir apparent to the George Duke and Herbie Hancock style of funky urban groove music. Creatively, Johnson continues to evolve as an artist. With the release of his 2012FLO: Holiday CD and the ongoing collaboration with famed Parisian Producer DJ Pulse – as the musical duo “Juris” – he has managed to maintain his traditional jazz roots, while also remaining on the forefront of the expanding “Euro Jazz” movement. His music continues to enforce and define his musical legacy as a “jazz movement for all people”. Johnson is also evolving as an innovative wine expert. He resides in the Metropolitan Washington area and is a new father. His daughter Chase was born on September 12, 2012. Marcus is currently featured weekly on Fox News and is involved with community and charity events, including service on the Board of the Boys and Girls Club.
