Elise's brother, Robert Sturman, joins her for a very special and candid conversation about their shared history, their family dinner table, and how their sometimes differing memories and experiences shaped their food stories. Sign up at com, and I’ll send it right away! Episode Highlights What Does It Mean to Be Authentic? To be authentic means being honest and fully who you are. You're also unapologetic about it. To be authentic is to be grounded and vulnerable. Using filters in your photos does not mean you are not authentic. Using filters and dressing yourself up are ways of expressing yourself. You may think twice about just being yourself and doing what you want because you may want others to view you as authentic. How Important Is It to Be Viewed as Authentic versus Just Being Yourself? It all comes down to how much you care about what other people think of you. If you’re just being yourself, you won’t care if anybody else thinks you’re authentic. Try understanding why you’re doing what you’re doing. Use make-up and filters if they make you happy, or don’t if you feel like you are putting on a mask. Explore both sides of the coin. The Power of Words It’s important to mind your words and how they can contribute to reaching your highest vibration. It is important to state our intentions clearly so that you're affirmative and positive. When expressing yourself, take a pause, breathe, and choose your words with intention and mindfulness. Vibrating at Your Highest Vibrating at your highest means being your most honest, real, and authentic self. There is also a semblance of vulnerability when vibrating at your highest. We need to think about how we can utilize words that continually make us feel empowered. In doing so, we can communicate more profoundly and build bridges rather than using words to argue. How you’re saying something and responding to something also matters. What Is Manifestation? Manifestation is the idea that what we think, say, and do matter in creating the life that we want. To manifest is to create and magnetize something towards us. We can't determine everything that happens to us, but we do have the creative capacity to bring about change. The main ingredient of manifestation is a commitment to action. 5 Powerful Quotes [13:50] “If you are truly showing up and being true to yourself, you're not going to care if anybody else thinks you're authentic.” [14:54] “Always bring it back to yourself and understand the ‘why’ of what you're doing and why you're doing it.” [22:25] “Words don't have to come out so quickly and so rapidly. We can take a moment to think about what we want to say from a place of mindfulness.” [26:49] “Vulnerability is coming just from a place of being completely honest.” [33:15] “If we believe that we can bring something into our life, if we believe that there is a way out of a not-good situation, then there is a way to think, say, and do something about it.” About Tessa Tessa Tovar is a yoga and meditation teacher and a holistic health coach. Replace ego with the eternal. Trade selfishness for service—and self-absorption for unity. Together, let’s explore the spark of divinity that resides within us all.Meet Raghunath Cappo.Punk rock icon. Spiritual warrior. Bhakti yoga devotee.A teen in search of meaning, Ray Cappo fled his suburban Connecticut enclave for New York City—and found community among the misfits of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He fell in love with punk rock, so he started a band and a record label. Success soon followed. By the late 1980’s, Youth of Today had thousands of fans, cementing Ray as a leading voice and trendsetter at the bullseye of hardcore culture. However, a growing existential itch led Ray to call it quits. At just 22, he walked away from his band and label and decamped for India—a spiritual pilgrimage that led him to the holy village of Vrindavan. It was there that Ray fell in love with the wisdom and traditions of Bhakti yoga.It was there that he would remain for the next six years, living as a monk.It was there that Ray became Raghunath. This is the incredible story of a modern day yogi. But it’s also about the search we all go on. The journey for personal meaning beyond the ego. And the quest for universal consequence beyond the material. It’s about the timeless that lives and breathes within all of us—that which is eternal, and past our limited senses. It’s about transcending the illusions that hold us back. What it means to truly devote oneself to greater truth. And the modern day challenges of trudging the path towards higher consciousness. All told, it’s about what it really means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. If you’ve enjoyed my conversations with musicians John Joseph & Toby Morse, spiritual leaders Guru Singh & Radhanath Swami, or modern seekers Andy Puddicombe, Jason Garner & Russell Brand, then I’m confident this will be your jam.To read more click here. When I realized this, there was no turning back." — Robert Sturman (tells us the story of his first time visiting a prison) Robert's story to finding yoga and photography Quote: “It didn't matter if I was serving someone who was serving a life sentence or frequented the covers of magazines. For this episode, I sat down with Robert Sturman. Robert is a dedicated yoga practitioner and photographer capturing the timeless grace and embodied mindfulness of yoga in his work. His stunning repertoire of portraits runs the gamut from yogis perched on rocks surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, to African orphans practicing yoga in Kenya, to breast cancer survivors, bare-chested and scarred. In addition, Sturman has worked extensively photographing war veterans who have embraced the practice of yoga to heal PTSD, first responders and more. He has been an Official Artist of the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and 2008 United States Olympics. MY 5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Photography is a way to pay attention, recognize, see, and acknowledge to the person you look at.2 - Photography can be like positive propaganda. You can share new ideas that will become the norm. You can change the world through the images you take. It's the most influential form of communication.3 - Yoga simply helps you make better choice. Yoga is for anybody and everybody, anywhere and everywhere.4 - Being an artist is different than being a photographer.5 - Never look down on anyone. When you photograph someone. Be eye to eye, on your subject's level. It's a sign of respect!QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE:Why do you choose to showcase yoga in your photography? How do you tell a story through a still image?Does the subject and the story you choose to tell change the power of the art piece? What was the idea behind your "Scars are Beautiful" Portfolio? What drew you to breast cancer survivors? Why do cancer survivors wanted to do these shoots? What was their intentions?Which prisons have you visited and photographed? You say that “everything you know about the essence of photography, I learned from working in prisons” Can you explain that?Is the camera a way for you to share what you see so more people can see it?What was your intention about photography the military and first responders doing yoga. You photographed for the Africa Yoga Project and made and did a photographic essay for the New York times about it. What did this portfolio and your trip to Nairobi teach you? Did it change your perspective on yoga in any way? What inspires you right now? What would you like to see more represented? How do you feel about everybody being a “photographer” now?Any tips to take better photos?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!DONATE OR BECOME AN EXCLUSIVE MEMBER TODAY.Thank you so much for listening and being part of our 63rd episode! Aaron fangirled a bit during Episode 4. Robert Sturman is more than a photographer. He is a linguist who captures the spirit and language of yoga in photography in a way we’ve never seen before. He reminds us that across cultures, across boundaries, we are all human. We can all practice and live yoga, despite any apparent differences in the way we look or speak. Plus, he calls Aaron a dude, which is the cherry on his Beyond Asana cake.
