The heartfelt memoir of Ray Raghunath Cappo, a legendary hardcore punk musician-turned-monk—and pioneer of the straight-edge movement—told with warmth, candor, and humor, narrated by the author himself.Ray Cappo was a hardcore punk singer and pioneer of the straight-edge movement living on the Lower East Side of New York City in the '80s, where his band Youth of Today played to packed clubs and touched thousands of people across the globe. But despite the accolades from fans, the popularity of his records, and the positivity he'd brought to the punk music scene, none of this success gave Ray joy. He felt stagnant, and he yearned for something more. This, along with his father's untimely death, led him to abruptly quit the band and buy a one-way ticket to India in pursuit of the answers to life's great mysteries. Living as a monk in the sacred city of Vrindavan and traveling across the country on a series of train trips, Ray embraced the rich, spiritual culture he discovered there. As his unusual adventure unfolded, he encountered extraordinary characters, witnessed deep acts of devotion, and experienced profound moments of divine connection, leading to a radical transformation that was ego-crushing and blissful all at once.Inspired to write music again, Ray returned to the US, where he and other monks founded Shelter, a band dedicated to spreading a message of faith, hope, and love. Told with warmth, candor, and humor, this heartfelt memoir chronicles Ray's emotional and spiritual journey from punk to monk and beyond.HISTORICAL: Offers a unique glimpse into the punk and hardcore scene of the Lower East Side during the 80s and the birth of the straight-edge movement.SPIRITUAL: Asks (and answers) deep questions about our relationship to the world around us and the living beings that populate it.PERSONAL: Chronicles Ray's spiritual journey in his own words, with warmth, candor, and humor.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/earth-ancients--2790919/support.

Once a fixture in the gritty punk rock scene of New York City, Raghunath Das's life took an unexpected turn following a violent encounter that left him seeking a deeper purpose. Our latest episode features a heart-to-heart with Raghunath, where he unpacks his remarkable transformation and his journey towards spiritual enlightenment. His story is a powerful testament to the idea that personal rebirth is possible, even when it seems like the world is crashing down around you. Venturing beyond personal transformation, we take a broader look at the cultural tides shifting in India, where Western influences are leaving indelible marks on age-old traditions. The conversation evolves into an exploration of the delicate interplay between modernity and spiritual essence. Our discussion delves into the complexities of cultural exchange, where the West meets East, highlighting the beauty and challenges that come with preserving the profound Dharmic values that have been the bedrock of Indian culture for millennia. Closing on an introspective note, we recount a gripping tale of confrontation and the power of spiritual presence in moments of crisis. Today I'm joined by Moby to discuss his film ‘Punk Rock Vegan Movie! The new documentary will have its world premiere and be the Opening Night film for the 2023 Slamdance Film Festival on January 20 in Park City, Utah. The film, which is Moby's directorial debut, is a passionate and stylistically idiosyncratic look at the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk rock and animal rights. It includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible. Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It's also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it's incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. In the spirit of punk rock, Moby will be giving the film away for free following the Slamdance premiere. “'PUNK ROCK VEGAN MOVIE' was created to shine a light on the surprising and inspiring history of punk rock and animal rights, but also to remind people of the importance and desperate urgency of adopting the uncompromising ethics and actions of the original punk rock activists,” said Moby. “After it makes its world premiere at Slamdance, it's yours. It's my goal to give the movie away, as I can't in good conscience try to profit from what is essentially a labor of love and activism." Our guest today is Raghunath who has so much wisdom to share. He is a long-time yogi, spiritual teacher, musician, podcaster, and co-founder of Supersoul School and Farm. A teen in search of meaning, Ray Cappo fled his suburban Connecticut enclave for New York City — and found community among the misfits of Manhattan's Lower East Side. He fell in love with punk rock, so he started a band, Youth of Today, and a record label. Success soon followed. By the late 1980's, his bandhad thousands of fans, cementing Ray as a leading voice and trendsetter at the bullseye of hardcore culture. At the age of 22, he experienced a spiritual awakening and traveled to India to become a monk. After 6 and a half years, he began another successful band. 20 years ago, Nathalie and Raghunath met while they both worked at YogaWorks in Los Angeles. He never planned to become a teacher, but was always fascinated by spiritual openness. After moving to L.A., he realized he didn't want to be a musician anymore, but yoga was a passion of his. He was asked to sub as a teacher, and his teaching journey began from there. After all this time, what does yoga mean for Raghunath? In the past, he was always interested in alternative lifestyles and clean living, but he never approached yoga as a specific way to “fix” one thing. It was always a search for spirituality. Now, yoga isn't the whole meal, rather it is the condiment for larger feasts of the soul. We are spiritual beings that have a soul. The goal of yoga is knowledge of the Self. Who are you underneath your ego self? Underneath all the trappings of the false self, who is the true you? The body is a gift, but it is not all we are. All aspects of yourself need to be nurtured. Some folks might have missed this important episode where I talk with Noah Weisman about the problem of so-called gurus who bypass the real issues of today's society, opting to use spirituality as an excuse to not take responsibility for their actions that bring harm to others. One such example is our former teacher Raghunath Cappo. Listen in on our discussion as we try to bring attention to the real work of building an anti-racist society. For today's episode, we have a special guest, Noah Weisman. A little bit about him: growing up biracial in the predominantly white communities of Vermont, he began his study of the body and mind through mixed martial arts in 2003. Diving headfirst into the physical, mental and energetic practices, he discovered a wealth of knowledge in the philosophy of yoga and became a certified yoga teacher. He and his wife, Priscilla Rybicki founded Sukha Yoga School in 2015, and continue to offer classes and training all over the world. In today's conversation, he shares some insights about his racial relationship between his friends/colleagues and social justice. We also talk about the dangers of popular and visible white teachers who fail to see the racism and sexism of their ways, perpetuating the very problem we are trying to solve, including one specific teacher, Ray Cappo. These so-called gurus who bypass their own spiritual teachings only create more harm for communities of color. What a pleasure it was having Raghunath on the show - SO insightful. He has the ability to really simplify the complicated. Here is the story, from Raghunath: I've been on such a spiritual quest in this life! From my teens I started a punk/hardcore band called Youth of Today, which championed the principles of clean living, vegetarian diet, and self-control. By the time I was 21, my band had tens of thousands of fans around the world. I was shocked. I started Revelation Records, an indy record label with my high school buddy and signed 20 bands with a similar beliefs and ethics. As exciting as this was, there was a growing void in my heart I knew only Spirit could fill. I got into spirituality, metaphysics, and mysticism; eagerly consuming spiritual classics, my hunger only increased. This eventually manifested as strong desire to go deeper. I split and quit the band. Gave the label to my partner. The teachings of India drove me East and at age 22, I ended up on an ashram floor in the holy village of Vrindavan. That was 1988 — and one of the best choices I made in my life.India before cell phones and satellite TV, what to speak of the internet, was an exotic land.  I got to refine and dive deep into my yoga practice, my study of sacred literature and ritual, learn kirtan, cooking, mantra meditation and living simply with nothing except a few robes on my body. I was blessed with integrity-driven teachers who understood the essence of spiritual life. In 1991 I received the name Raghunath (formally Ray Cappo), representing initiation into lineage and a rebirth. I travelled to ashrams all over the world and the holy places of India, and I simply fell in love with the rich spiritual culture. I remained a monk in an ashram for six and a half years and now, many years later, teach how to incorporate everything I learned into everyday life. Basically how to get the spiritual high without leaving the world behind (or in some cases leaving it). Guess what?  This stuff works whether you're a householder or a monk.Presently I'm the opposite of a monk. I'm married with 5 kids. I co-founded Supersoul Yoga and Farm with my wife, a school in the countryside in upstate NY,  where I lead yoga teacher trainings.  Every year I lead sold-out pilgrimages to my favorite cities & villages around India and share all that I know of these places that I love. In the mood of a pilgrim, I and teach others how to enter these sacred vortexes, that they may receive an unforgettable transcendent experience. Since 2016, every January I lead a game-changing training in India with an ever expanding curriculum. We started with a 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training which we've been refining to be a life changing experience.  We teach the sweet culture of yoga which includes not just advanced yoga and pranayama, but sacred literature, kirtan study, Ayurveda for yoga teachers, Ayurvedic cooking, and yoga nidra. Last year we added an entire second training dedicated exclusively to the study of kirtan. Occasionally I get asked to do a reunion with my band which, when on stage, I realize is extension of everything I speak of today. I'm praying that I can give my students all the life-altering truths of the yoga system that I have learned from my gracious teachers.Forever Student is hosted by Stephan Muller and brought to you by the audiophiles at Dukkan Media.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Replace ego with the eternal. Trade selfishness for service—and self-absorption for unity. Together, let’s explore the spark of divinity that resides within us all.Meet Raghunath Cappo.Punk rock icon. Spiritual warrior. Bhakti yoga devotee.A teen in search of meaning, Ray Cappo fled his suburban Connecticut enclave for New York City—and found community among the misfits of Manhattan’s Lower East Side. He fell in love with punk rock, so he started a band and a record label. Success soon followed. By the late 1980’s, Youth of Today had thousands of fans, cementing Ray as a leading voice and trendsetter at the bullseye of hardcore culture. However, a growing existential itch led Ray to call it quits. At just 22, he walked away from his band and label and decamped for India—a spiritual pilgrimage that led him to the holy village of Vrindavan. It was there that Ray fell in love with the wisdom and traditions of Bhakti yoga.It was there that he would remain for the next six years, living as a monk.It was there that Ray became Raghunath. This is the incredible story of a modern day yogi. But it’s also about the search we all go on. The journey for personal meaning beyond the ego. And the quest for universal consequence beyond the material. It’s about the timeless that lives and breathes within all of us—that which is eternal, and past our limited senses. It’s about transcending the illusions that hold us back. What it means to truly devote oneself to greater truth. And the modern day challenges of trudging the path towards higher consciousness. All told, it’s about what it really means to be a spiritual being having a human experience. If you’ve enjoyed my conversations with musicians John Joseph & Toby Morse, spiritual leaders Guru Singh & Radhanath Swami, or modern seekers Andy Puddicombe, Jason Garner & Russell Brand, then I’m confident this will be your jam.To read more click here. Warzone/Always - A Friend For Life (Lower East Side Crew E.P.) Youth of Today/Shout It (Break Down the Walls) Bold/Nailed To The X (Speak Out) Gorilla Biscuits/New Direction (Start Today) Judge/Bringin' It Dow (Bringin' It Down) Shelter/Enough (Perfection Of Desire) Inside Out/No Spiritual Surrender (No Spiritual Surrender) Iceburn/Iron - I (Hephaestus) Into Another/Anxious (Ignaurus) Better Than a Thousand/Motivation (Just One) Elliott/Second Story Skyscraper (U.S Songs) Primal Rite/Chapter Zero (Dirge Of Escapism) Pour finir un mix des groupes qui nous semblent important.

It was founded in 1987 by owner Jordan Cooper, along with Ray Cappo of Youth of Today, with the sole intent of producing the Warzone Lower East Side Crew 7". Within the year, they put out two more releases and a limited 4th pressing of Youth of Today's Can't Close My Eyes 7", which had been originally released on Positive Force Records, just for the two of them to trade for vintage G.I.Joes and other action figures. In the first three years, the label put out 23 releases and pressed approximately 50,000 records, and it has continued to release an average of 78 albums a year.   Cappo left the business in 1988, to focus on his band Shelter and to start his own label Equal Vision Records (which he later sold to Youth Of Today roadie, former Revelation employee and friend, Steve Reddy), though his albums were still released by Revelation after that. The label put out several definitive hardcore and metalcore records in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with notable releases coming from Damnation A.D., Will Haven, Shai Hulud, Curl Up and Die, and Himsa. However, by the mid2000s, Revelation Records had seemingly fallen by the wayside, with very few releases between 2004 and 2006. However, the label is returning to its former stature as a premier oldschool hardcore label.   RECORD REVIEWS   Violent Reaction - Marching On   Originally conceived and executed as a oneman project by Tom Pimlott on the banks of the Mersey River in Liverpool, England, Violent Reaction recorded a demo in 2011, an EP in 2012 and an LP for Painkiller Records in 2013. Soon after, Tom relocated to Leeds to assemble a full band with an end result that finds the lads playing straight edge, hardcore punk with an obvious oi influence. With a lengthy American tour with their brother band The Flex under their belt, Violent Reaction is set to make their Revelation Records debut with "Marching On."   http://www.violentreaction.blogspot.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/ViolentReaction/177017079042937 http://www.revelationrecords.com/band/195   JUDGE - Bringin’ It Down   Judge stood tall in the face of changing times while helping to transform the musical landscape around them. Porcell, Ferraro, Siegler and Pincus may have had a list of priors that screamed “milewide X’s on the backs of your hands” (Youth of Today, Death Before Dishonor, Bold, Side by Side, Project X, Gorilla Biscuits, Young Republicans, Violent Children, Schism Records/fanzine, etc.), but even as they remained true to the edge, Bringin’ It Down moved towards a more sinister vibe and further promoted the nascent collision of metal and hardcore, while setting the stage for the likes of Integrity, Ringworm and Starkweather. This, in spite of—or maybe because of—having to re-record the album after a subpar session at Chinatown’s infamous Chung King Studios. Not bad for a band that was originally designed to be a oneoff for Ferraro’s frustration with the “Edge ’til 21 Crowd.”   https://www.facebook.com/pages/Judge/195626400586989 http://www.revelationrecords.com/release/228 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bringin%27_It_Down   DROWNINGMAN - Rock n’ Roll Killing Machine   Drowningman was a hardcore punk band from Burlington, Vermont, which was active from 1995 to 2005. Formed in the fall of 1995 by Simon Brody, Denny Donovan, Javin Leonard, Dave Barnett and Todd Tomlinson, the band was heavily influenced by a variety of bands including Deadguy, Unbroken, Shotmaker, Unwound, Sunny Day Real Estate and Promise Ring. This musical amalgamation helped to pioneer the modern metalcore and mathcore musical subgenres. The band was known for revolving membership and frequent record label changes.   A first full US tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan was embarked on to support the release.[6] Soon after returning, production of the Rock And Roll Killing Machine record began in Washington, D.C. at the Salad Days Studio. A great deal of technical difficulty was encountered; Simon Brody had claimed in interviews the stressed work environment caused the tempo of many of the songs to rush and that record lost some of the previous efforts melodic counterpoint. Still, it was well received, earning a 10/10 in respected extreme music magazine Terrorizer and finding its way into many publications' top ten lists for 2001.Aside from making regular appearances at Hellfest, Krazy Fest, Monster Fest and The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, Drowningman began touring extensively in support of this latest record. They toured with hardcore and metal bands as varied as Earth Crisis, Glassjaw, Shadows Fall, Darkest Hour and Twelve Tribes. However, projected gigs for early 2001 were curtailed when the group lost its drummer. By May 2001 road action was resumed with regular partners Darkest Hour on the "BroDown 2001" tour.   http://drowningman.com/ http://www.revelationrecords.com/release/97 https://www.facebook.com/drowningman2014   Other Links and Info:   Our Blog: Deathwish Racing - http://deathwishracing.blogspot.com/ Become a Mountain Bike Radio Member Email Kyle Email Mountain Bike Radio
