In this episode, Tina Tower takes listeners behind the scenes at South by Southwest (SXSW), her favorite tech conference. Having attended eight times, Tina shares her biggest takeaways, standout sessions, and key emerging tech trends—all with her signature candor and enthusiasm. This episode dives deep into AI trends, the loneliness epidemic, balancing technology and human connection, the environmental impact of AI, cybersecurity, and so much more. If you're keen to stay on the cutting edge of tech but also crave a more connected, fulfilling life, this one's for you. Key Takeaways: SXSW Overview: SXSW combines tech, music, and film; Tina focused on the tech track. It's a hub for learning, inspiration, and connecting with like-minded change makers. AI Everywhere: AI dominated the conference, but Tina questions whether mainstream desire matches tech-world hype. Small language models are emerging as more eco-friendly than large ones like GPT-4. AI agents, avatars, and robo-taxis are evolving fast—commercial fast-learning robots may be here by 2030. Human Connection & Loneliness: Keynote by Kasli Kalam emphasized the "loneliness epidemic." Her "5-3-1 Game": Connect with 5 people weekly, maintain 3 close relationships, and have 1 hour of quality interaction daily. Even introverts need meaningful connection, though the ideal amount varies. AI, Tech & Health: The paradox of embracing convenience tools while ensuring they support—not replace—human connection and mental health. Future health may involve mindset coaches as common as personal trainers. Ethics & Future Threats: A growing divide: people embracing vs. avoiding advanced tech (think brain chips and body-embedded sensors). Issues around trust in information and the growing need for credible journalism. Cybersecurity: Meredith Whitaker from Signal warned about privacy risks as AI agents start connecting all your personal information. Tips: Enable end-to-end encryption, especially for sensitive accounts like iCloud. Wonder & Curiosity: Beyond tech, nurture your community, stay curious, and deliberately step out of your echo chamber. The Need for Balance: Leverage AI for productivity, but use the gained time for real connection and human experiences. Draw boundaries with tech—seek more “off time” for happiness and well-being. Whether you're a tech enthusiast or just trying to make sense of the digital world we're living in, this episode offers a grounded perspective with heart. Tune in to feel inspired, informed, and reminded that the future is human—tech is just the tool. Could your digital business benefit from more physical marketing? Mark Stern is reimagining direct mail with experiential boxes designed to set your customers up for success and extend lifetime value. Mark is a serial entrepreneur and founder of the Custom Box Agency, a design agency that specializes in optimizing the customer journey through direct mail. His innovative work caught the attention of Forbes, which featured him as one of the Next 1,000 Entrepreneurs redefining the American Dream. He was also highlighted in Joey Coleman's Wall Street Journal Bestseller, Never Lose an Employee Again. Before embarking on his entrepreneurial path, Stern was a top-ranked strategy consultant at Deloitte Consulting, the world's largest consulting firm. He is an MBA graduate from Duke University. Stern is also a six-time Spartan Trifecta holder and serves as a mentor at South by Southwest (SXSW), guiding up-and-coming startups. Connecting the Digital to the Physical The idea for the Custom Box Agency was born out of Mark's experience buying online courses. After spending $2,000+ on a course, he was left to print out the workbook or go to the store to track down what he needed to get started. Oftentimes, he didn't end up starting at all. He began to wonder how course creators could better set their students up for success–beyond simply sending swag with the company logo. When Mark started shipping out his boxes, the idea immediately caught on. People shared unboxing videos and became unofficial ambassadors and salespeople for the business. In the first year, Custom Box Agency grew from zero to a million dollars in revenue, all through organic word-of-mouth. The 3 Customer Journeys One key aspect of Mark's custom box business is tailoring the boxes to the customer journey. There are three different types of journeys throughout the customer lifecycle: acquisition, delivery, and retention. And within those journeys, there are multiple steps. On the acquisition journey, prospects might discover you through social media, SEO, or in-person events. After someone finds you, you don't necessarily want to pitch them right away–those are cold leads. So you might nurture them through case studies, demos, or free content to build more of a relationship with them. From there, you have to close them as a customer. What does the point of sale look like? After someone buys your product, you need to take them from onboarding to delivering the value you promised. Retention involves recognizing your clients. How do you celebrate them when they hit a milestone or introduce the next way that you can serve them? If someone goes through one journey, the question is, what's next? Enjoy this episode with Mark Stern… Soundbytes 5:57-6:22 “If you have something digital, you need something physical to complement it. And now, in this day and age, where it's becoming even more relevant, is the rise of AI. We have so much digital content being pumped into the system. When we think about experience, design experiences seen through the senses, everything digital is only what you see and hear. A podcast is what you hear, YouTube is what you see and hear, and Facebook scrolling is what you see. I can activate the kinesthetic, touch, taste, and smell.” 13:28-13:42 “Recognition is huge. How do I celebrate you and see you when you hit a milestone or introduce the next way that I can serve you? So when we think about journey stacking, if people get through one journey, the question is, what's next? And that becomes the retention play. How do I extend the relationship and extend lifetime value?” 25:32-25:57 “How are we thinking about the programs we're creating, and are we engineering a replayable story? And we should be. The example I tell course creators and coaches all the time is, have you ever played a song and then six months later, listened to the song again and it had a new meaning? Or have you ever watched a movie and then years later, watched it again and it was a completely different experience? That's because we evolve.” Quotes “It started this idea of, if you have something digital, you need something physical to compliment it.” “We went from zero to a million in the first year via word of mouth, just because we had a unique perspective on how can we truly set people up for success.” “Swag means stuff without a goal. Stop sending people stuff. Truly engineer the things that they need to be set up for success.” “People love getting surprises in the mail.” “As an entrepreneur, it's important that we hold a bigger vision for our people than they hold for themselves.” Links mentioned in this episode: From Our Guest Website: https://customboxagency.com/ Connect with Mark Stern on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marustern/ Connect with brandiD Download our free guide to learn 16 crucial website updates that attract more leads and convert visitors into clients: https://thebrandid.com/website-tweaks/ Ready to elevate your digital presence with a powerful brand or website? Meet Alane BoydAlane Boyd is the Co-Founder of BGBO Co., an operations and growth strategy agency utilizing AI and automation to improve efficiency for their clients. In 2022, her company launched Arvo, an AI-powered visual documentation software for creating standard operating procedures, training documents, and company knowledge. Alane has been written and featured in Entrepreneur, HuffPost, South by Southwest (SXSW), PBS, FemFounder, and many more. How do you start positioning yourself as an expert or a credible resource in your industry? I really struggled with this for a long time because I was looking at the work we were doing. We are doing such amazing things and our customers love us. I finally realized we weren't telling anybody about it. Even when we would do these big case studies, we weren't sending them out in a bite sized piece. No one's gonna know that you're an expert unless you're telling them, and you're not gonna be credible just because you say you know how to do something. You have to tell stories and do them short, where people's attention span can still follow along with it.And also very clear. You can do that so easily now with social media. And I have found that has really turned a 180 for me. I was just going, Hey, I'm an expert. I'm over here. People are coming to me because they see me as an expert.I would love to hear more about your AI software. We launched that for companies to create internal process stocks, SOPs, training manuals for their team, and it's all digital. We were looking at it from a perspective of stuff out there, a lot of platforms, they look like glorified text documents. We just thought nobody wants to learn like that. Everything is meant to suck you in longer and also for short attention span.So that's why we built Arvo, to be really digitally appealing. And then we added AI earlier this year and we've got a couple of new AI features coming out too. We thought, what a great use of AI to help write processes. If you could have AI write 90% of a process for you, and then you tweak it for your business, that could be saving you hours of work. We've got some things coming down the line that I'm really excited about with AI too.Connect with Alane!LinkedInReach out on LinkedIn for a free 30-minute callX

If current conditions line up just right, much of the Great Barrier Reef could soon suffer another catastrophic bleaching event, so how are conservationists reacting to threats like this in Australia? “We could lose a huge part of the reef by February,” says Newscast guest Dean Miller of the Forever Reef Project, so his team is racing to add the final coral specimens to its huge “biobank” of coral species before then, for use by researchers and conservationists. Work like this was featured at the first international edition of the famed South by Southwest (SXSW) festival and conference (October 15-22, 2023 in Sydney), and Mongabay spoke with multiple people engaged with coral and kelp reforestation, plus sustainable agriculture. On this edition of the Mongabay Newscast, guests also include John “Charlie” Veron from the Forever Reef Project, Mic Black from Rainstick, and Adriana Vergés from the Kelp Forest Alliance, detailing their projects and the challenges they're tackling.
