In 2016, the Rome Braves were one of the youngest teams in Minor League Baseball. While the roster was loaded with first round draft picks and big-league prospects, this talented band of mostly teenagers would struggle mightily during the first half of the season. No one knew it at the time, but future household names such as Austin Riley, Max Fried and Ronald Acuña Jr. would lead the 2016 Rome Braves on a second-half run for the ages and lay the foundation for a historic era of excellence of Atlanta Braves baseball. “Behind the Braves Presents: Win In Rome” tells the story of this incredible team through the memories of Austin Riley, Max Fried, A.J. Minter, broadcaster Kevin Karel, manager Randy Ingle and front office executives Mike Dunn and Jonathan Schuerholz. Today's top headlines: 14 patients with COVID-19 in Floyd, Redmond hospitals on Tuesday; 4 others awaiting test results. Second Polk resident dies. Local positive tests jump by 53 from Monday. 2020 season of the Rome Braves -- and minor league baseball -- officially canceled. What Braves' fans need to know. Health: State again rejects Floyd's bid to offer adult open heart surgery. Business: Home sales down 20.5% but prices mixed for Northwest Georgia homebuyers, sellers in May vs. a year earlier. Independence Day 2020: Fireworks, parades still on tap although some events have been canceled. What to know. Ware Mechanical Weather Center: Maybe a half-inch of rain today, more storms possible. Independence Day: 89 with a 40% rain chance. Truett's Chick-Fil-A Sports Report: New look, focus for Berry College athletics online. Rant of the Day: What time is it? Cryin' time. Few were surprised to hear the 2020 Rome Braves season was officially canceled -- as well as that of 159 other teams in North America. What makes this even sadder: At least 40 communities will see their teams lose Major League affiliation by year's end. Some will go away. Others will be hammered by pandemic-related losses. The Rome Braves are "safe" and are due to return in 2021 to a recently upgraded stadium. But that is not helping the fans who made State Mutual Stadium their home each spring and summer. Add in the economic blow to Floyd County and it really hits home. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support

Today's headlines: Coronavirus headlines: Local: Eight people in Northwest Georgia test positive for coronavirus including four in Bartow, two in Gordon and one each in Floyd and Polk counties. The latest updates on what’s closed, from schools and colleges to churches, governments, others. Also: Canceled weekend events. Health: With at least 10 weeks to go, 71 people have died in the 2019-20 flu season in Georgia. Politics: 1,441 advance voters so far in Floyd; Saturday voting in all counties; Sunday voting in Floyd as well. Ware Mechanical Weather Center: A little cooler, mid to upper 60s, through the weekend with a bit more rain Sunday. RANT OF THE DAY: Count economy among the victims. Perhaps lost amid Gov. Brian Kemp’s latest coronavirus update on Thursday was this reference. The governor created a state panel to track Georgia’s logistics and economic fallout triggered by coronavirus. His one-word prediction of its scope: “Substantial.” Rome and Floyd County will serve as a prime example of that, starting right now. Consider the following: The wheelchair tennis event that opened Wednesday is canceled. That’s a hit to the hospitality industry. The Leprechaun-a-thon 5K and health walk, with draws more than 1,500 usually, was canceled and will be replaced by an October event. Translation: Huge impact on downtown restaurants, bars and retailers. Some smaller events – St. Petrick’s Parade, Ginger Parade and a few others – also are canceled which means a cut in business as well. Baseball in general is looking at a delayed start of the new season and that includes the minor leaguers such as the Rome Braves. Opening night was April 9. Let’s assume we lose at least two weeks of games – that’s some change out of the pockets of the seasonal staffers there let alone the normal economic impact each game has on Rome and Floyd County. Some college sports are canceled… some events hosted at Berry are wiped from the calendar … even some high school formal events are gone or delayed. That translates into dresses and tux rentals and nice dinners. And what will parents do for child care over the next two weeks? Can they afford to skip work or, instead, hire sitters? There goes more disposable spending money. Please don’t misunderstand. Just about every one of the 30 to 40 closings, delays and such we posted on Thursday was critically needed if we’re going to stop the spread of coronavirus. But there will be some fallout. Atlanta will be pounded by a loss of fans at this weekend’s NASCAR race as well as the Final Four basketball tournament in April. And then there’s the delay in the Atlanta Braves’ season opener. For that matter, should people even be congregating at The Battery at night and on the weekends, given the size of the normal crowds it attracts. For now, the goal is keeping as many people as possible healthy over the next few weeks. When, not if, this thing subsides, we’ll get back to a more normal pace. But for those trying to make a living, or even trying to sustain a certain comfort level by taking on temp jobs, will they have the resources to wait it out? For sure, our economy will be the unnamed victim of this pandemic. Starting now, our government, business and religious groups must establish a plan to help those in need. It looks like we’re all going to have some extra time on our hands. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-druckenmiller/support
