Mike and Abe are joined by Grant McAuley as they preview the Braves' series with the Red Sox and how Ronald Acuna Jr. played and looked in his outing with the Gwinnett Stripers
Mike and Abe open up the show with some brief thoughts on Ronald Acuna Jr.'s outing in his Gwinnett Stripers start and while he went two for three at the plate, the Braves' outfielder had some minor issues fielding, yet Abe notes there should not be too much concern about Acuna Jr. not returning to form soon. Then get into some Falcons talk and share some thoughts on why betting odds have them at 7.5 wins for the season which Mike believes the team is not in the national eye enough for people to really know as much about them in comparison to Atlanta sports media.
Mike Johnson, Beau Morgan, and Ali Mac recap and react to the Atlanta Braves beating the Washington Nationals 5-2 yesterday, and talk about the Braves getting back to .500 again thanks to another strong outing from young starting pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver. Mike, Beau, and Ali also talk about Ronald Acuña Jr. making his first rehab start with the Gwinnett Stripers yesterday, let you hear what Acuña Jr. had to say after his first rehab start with the Stripers yesterday, and react to what he had to say as well.
Mike, Ali, and Beau spend some time with 92.9 The Game's own Braves insider and reporter, Grant McAuley! Beau, Mike, Ali, and Grant discuss how the other guys besides Ronald Acuña Jr. like Jarred Kelenic and James McCann are doing in Triple-A Gwinnett, the importance of having both Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy at catcher, the difference in Ronald Acuña Jr.'s demeanor between Wednesday night when he got questions about his tweet about Jarred Kelenic and Brian Snitker and last night after his first rehab start with the Gwinnett Stripers, if Drake Baldwin could replace Marcell Ozuna next season as the team's designated hitter, and what the future of the Braves' outfield and bullpen looks like with the returns of Ronald Acuña Jr. and Jurickson Profar looming and Craig Kimbrel possibly being called up to the big league club soon.
HR3 - Jalon Walker will only be pass rusher for Falcons until at least year two In hour three Mike Johnson, Beau Morgan, and Ali Mac let listeners call in and talk about what their expectations are for Jalon Walker in his rookie year and cell phone etiquette in the Wake Up Call! Then, Mike, Ali, and Beau continue the final hour by spending some time with 92.9 The Game's own Braves insider and reporter, Grant McAuley! Finally, The Morning Shift crew closes out hour three by spending some time with Atlanta Falcons beat writer for The Athletic Josh Kendall! Ali, Mike, Beau, and Josh discuss if Josh thinks the Falcons will use Jalon Walker the way the Cowboys use Micah Parsons, what would be fair expectations for Jalon Walker in his rookie season, what Josh expects from James Pearce Jr. in his rookie season, if Josh thinks the Falcons got a fair shake when it comes to their 2025-26 schedule, if Josh was surprised that the Falcons got five primetime games this season, if Josh thinks Xavier Watts will be fighting with DeMarcco Hellams for that other safety spot next to Jessie Bates, how the Falcons plan to improve their run defense in the middle of their defensive line, and why the Falcons haven't signed Ryan Neuzil yet.
HR1 - AJ Smith-Shawver continues to show why belongs with the big league club In hour one Mike Johnson, Beau Morgan, and Ali Mac recap and react to the Atlanta Braves beating the Washington Nationals 5-2 yesterday, talk about the Braves getting back to .500 again thanks to another strong outing from young starting pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver, talk about Ronald Acuña Jr. making his first rehab start with the Gwinnett Stripers yesterday, let you hear what Acuña Jr. had to say after his first rehab start with the Stripers yesterday, and react to what he had to say as well. Then, Beau, Mike, and Ali talk about an article that Atlanta Falcons' beat writer for The Athletic Josh Kendall wrote about Falcons' first round pick Jalon Walker, the comparisons he gets and has gotten to Cowboys edge rusher and outside linebacker Micah Parsons, and if Walker could be the Falcons' version of Parsons. Mike, Beau, and Ali also explain why expecting Jalon Walker to be the Falcons' version of Micah Parsons is unfair. The Morning Shift crew also reacts to the biggest local and national headlines in The Front Page! On this edition of The Front Page, Mike, Beau, and Ali recap and react to the Denver Nuggets beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 119-107 last night at home in game six of their Western Conference semifinals series, and forcing a game seven in Oklahoma City. The Morning Shift crew also previews tonight's game six between the New York Knicks and the Boston Celtics in their Eastern Conference semifinals series, and discusses if the Knicks will close it out tonight or if the Celtics will force a game seven. Finally, Mike, Beau, and Ali close out hour one by diving into the life of Ali Mac in Ali's Mac Drop!
Nick Bernabe is the Assistant General Manager with the Gwinnett Stripers, the AAA affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Nick's path through baseball has been nothing short of fascinating—from his beginnings with the Arizona Fall League, described as one of baseball's best-kept secrets, through impactful experiences internationally in the Dominican Republic, and roles with prestigious organizations including Major League Baseball, the Minnesota Twins' AA affiliate in Wichita, and overseeing operations with both the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins organizations. Nick has a bachelor's degree in international business from Eckerd College and a master's of sports administration from Northwestern University.
If Strider pitches at all to the level he was pitching in his rehab starts with the Braves AAA affiliate Gwinnett Stripers, the Braves could be looking at their first series sweep of 2025, which would be just what the doctor ordered as the Braves return hoe to start a series with the Minnesota Twins. All of this, of course, depends on whether or not the Braves can muster up enough offense to out the team back on the right path. Andy Bunker and Randy McMichael discuss the Braves series versus the Blue Jays a bit further, and what a series victory could mean for the team moving forward.

This predicament stems from a complex web of factors, including stringent regulations, escalating construction costs, and the enduring aftermath of the Great Recession. While regions like the Mountain West and Sun Belt have witnessed notable housing developments, areas such as West Virginia and parts of the Great Lakes region have experienced stagnation or negligible growth. Moreover, the pace of housing development does not always match up with demographic trends, posing affordability issues in certain locales. In Georgia, for instance, the number of housing units rose by 10.5% between 2012 and 2022, marginally exceeding population growth. However, this period also saw median home prices skyrocket by 157.7%. Tackling the housing shortage demands a multifaceted approach, focusing on policy reform, increased construction activity, and bolstering affordable housing initiatives. STORY 5: PrizePicks to locate new headquarters in Atlanta Governor Brian Kemp has officially announced that PrizePicks will establish its new headquarters in Atlanta, marking a significant $25 million investment and promising the creation of 1,000 jobs within the next seven years. The new headquarters, occupying 33,000 square feet in the Star Metals Building at Midtown Atlanta, signifies a major boost to the city's innovation ecosystem. This strategic move underscores Georgia's burgeoning reputation as a technology and innovation hub, supported by a skilled workforce and robust infrastructure. The expansion of PrizePicks is poised to make a considerable economic contribution to Atlanta, reflecting the state's dedication to promoting technological innovation and employment opportunities. The grant application process begins next Monday, accompanied by workshops designed to guide applicants through the submission procedure. The state's strategy emphasizes a meticulous and impactful response to the opioid epidemic, prioritizing areas such as medication-assisted treatment, prevention initiatives, and recovery support services. Sheriff Gary Sisk has underscored the critical nature of the drug crisis and the imperative for a sincere commitment to recovery efforts. This program advocates for transparency and seeks to integrate insights from those with firsthand experience of addiction, underlining the value of their perspectives in the fight against substance abuse. STORY 7: Virtual reality sessions could help cancer patients lessen pain: study A recent study published by the American Cancer Society reveals that ten-minute sessions of virtual reality therapy can significantly alleviate pain in cancer patients, with effects persisting beyond the duration of the session. This innovative approach has demonstrated superior efficacy in pain reduction compared to traditional distraction methods, such as using an iPad. The research involved 128 adult cancer patients suffering from moderate to severe pain, who were randomly assigned to either VR or iPad therapy sessions. Findings highlighted a more pronounced decrease in pain levels among participants in the VR group, with the relief extending up to 24 hours post-session. The study advocates for further investigation into the application of VR therapy across various outpatient contexts and for different manifestations of cancer-related pain, underscoring its potential as a non-pharmacological option for managing discomfort in cancer patients. Break 2: INGLES 4 STORY 4: Women get same exercise benefits as men but with less effort: study A recent study has found that women can reap the same benefits from exercise as men, but with less effort required. This research identified a "gender gap" in physical exertion, revealing that women can exercise less frequently than men and still achieve greater cardiovascular gains. The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), utilized data from over 400,000 U.S. adults collected between 1997 and 2019 by the National Health Interview Survey. The results showed that regular physical activity reduced mortality risk by 24% in women and 15% in men. Notably, the research indicated that men need to engage in moderate to vigorous activities like brisk walking or cycling for about five hours per week to reach their maximal survival benefit. In contrast, women can attain the same benefit with just two-and-a-half hours of similar activity per week. When it comes to weightlifting and other muscle-strengthening exercises, men peak at three sessions per week, while women only need one. Women also reach maximal survival benefit at 140 minutes of exercise per week, whereas men require twice that amount. STORY 5: Did religious people cope much better during the pandemic? A University of Cambridge study found that religious individuals coped better with the Covid-19 pandemic than non-religious ones. The mental health decline was 60% worse for non-believers. The research, which analyzed data from the UK and US, showed that those with strong religious beliefs experienced less unhappiness during the pandemic. The study suggests that religion can bolster self-esteem and coping skills in times of crisis. However, the benefits of religion were not observed in areas with strict lockdowns, indicating the importance of access to places of worship. The research highlights the role of religious faith in building resilience and providing hope during challenging times. STORY 5: Georgia senators debate state pullout from accrediting American Library Association Conservative state senators in Georgia are proposing Senate Bill 390 to sever ties with the American Library Association (ALA), citing objections to the ALA's support for library materials on LGBTQ topics. The bill would prohibit state and local entities from spending on the ALA and remove requirements for public library directors to hold degrees accredited by the ALA. Discussions are ongoing, balancing concerns about funding and accreditation with objections to certain library content. STORY 6: Georgia state Supreme Court chief tells lawmakers justice system needs better pay to move cases Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs addressed state legislators, highlighting the staffing shortages and financial challenges facing Georgia's judicial system. Despite progress in reducing case backlogs, staffing shortages of court reporters, prosecutors, public defenders, and other court personnel hinder efficient case processing. Boggs emphasized the need for competitive pay to attract and retain experienced professionals. High turnover rates and unfilled vacancies across all levels of the judicial system were cited, along with shortages of court reporters and interpreters. Innovative use of grant funds helped reduce backlogs, but additional state funding is required to address staffing needs adequately. Public defender and prosecutor officials also discussed budgetary concerns, with proposals to increase salaries to attract more attorneys. A total of 37 cars were unlawfully entered or broken into within an hour and a half. The incidents involved theft of personal items, including electronics, driver's licenses, credit cards, and purses. The police are reviewing security camera footage and collaborating with local and state law enforcement agencies to determine any patterns. State Rep. Chuck Efstration introduced legislation for a referendum on Mulberry's incorporation, responding to concerns about a 700-unit apartment development. County officials emphasize the current service delivery model's efficiency and comprehensive nature. The commissioners argue that Mulberry's structure, relying on Gwinnett for services like police and fire protection, may negatively impact the proposed city, the existing 16 cities, and Gwinnett as a whole. A fact sheet outlining concerns has been sent to Gwinnett legislators. STORY 3: Premature birth can affect children's development in later life: study A new 13-year study, following over a million births, reveals that children born moderately (32-33 weeks) or late preterm (34-36 weeks) face higher long-term risks of neurodevelopmental difficulties. These difficulties include conditions like epilepsy, autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. The study emphasizes that children born in these windows constitute 80% of all preterm births, and the risks should not be underestimated. The research, published in The BMJ, examined 1,281,690 children born in Sweden between 1998 and 2012, concluding that compared to full-term births, those born moderately or late preterm showed higher risks for various neurodevelopmental impairments. The current hedges, installed during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, are reaching the end of their typical lifespan. The university has been growing replacement hedges, and the Athletic Association will start proactive revitalization work in February. This project involves full soil replacement, irrigation, drainage work, and replanting with the same lineage of hedges that have been part of the Georgia sidelines for 95 years. From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Thursday, January 4th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Gwinnett Stripers Saw Highest Attendance Since 2015 in Successful Season The Gwinnett Stripers, a Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, marked a triumphant 2023 season with a record-breaking attendance of 231,044 fans at 71 home games in Coolray Field. This represents the highest turnout since 2015, underlining the team's escalating popularity. The franchise saw an over 14% surge in ticket sales from 2022, marking the first instance in their history with back-to-back seasons of increased attendance. Impressively, this milestone has been achieved three times in the past four years. General Manager Erin McCormick credited this success to the team's dedicated staff and the steadfast support from the community, stating, "We take pride in being a communal hub for many and anticipate welcoming more fans to Coolray Field for our 15th season in 2024." The forthcoming 2024 season is set to begin in mid-March, featuring the Savannah Bananas' debut at Coolray Field. The Stripers' opening night will be on Tuesday, April 2 against Louisville. Today is Friday, October 27th and happy birthday to musician Scott Weiland. ***STONE TEMPLE PILOTS*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by Mall of Georgia. Buford alum Elexa Bahr to face USWNT with Colombia after historic Women's World Cup run Prosecutors Questions Lead To Mistrial In Peachtree Corners Gas Station Murder Case Lake Lanier and Coolray Field to host National Professional Fishing League finale All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Buford alum Elexa Bahr to face USWNT with Colombia after historic Women's World Cup run Elexa Bahr, a former Buford High School alum, has experienced a remarkable soccer journey, representing various countries in her career. After playing professional soccer in Colombia and Australia, she recently participated in the 2023 Women's World Cup as a part of Colombia's first-ever quarterfinal run. Currently playing for América de Cali in Colombia, Elexa was called up to the Colombian national team. Her ability to represent different nations, including the United States, Honduras, and Colombia, led to her becoming a key player for Colombia. Her family, including her parents, watched her games in the Women's World Cup despite the distance. Elexa's future goals include facing the U.S. women's national team and participating in the 2024 Olympics in Paris with her Colombian team. Her soccer journey has been an inspiration to her family, proving that anything is possible. STORY 2: Prosecutors Questions Lead To Mistrial In Peachtree Corners Gas Station Murder Case A mistrial has been declared in the trial of three suspects accused of murdering Bradley Coleman, a coach and Norcross high school graduate, during a failed carjacking in July 2022. The mistrial was declared due to actions by prosecutors during the trial. Prosecutors recalled a witness and appeared to lead her into saying her boyfriend had committed the murder, which the defense raised objections to. The judge agreed with the defense and declared a mistrial for all three defendants. The DA's Office plans to retry the case, but the mistrial may add tension to the race for district attorney in the upcoming election. STORY 3: Lake Lanier, Coolray Field to host National Professional Fishing League finale The 2023 National Professional Fishing League is concluding its schedule from October 26 to 28 on Lake Lanier, hosted by the Gwinnett County Sports Commission. The event includes community outreach on October 25, practice sessions from October 22 to 24, and main events from Thursday to Saturday. Daily launch events occur at the Laurel Park Boat Ramp, with weigh-ins at Coolray Field, the Gwinnett Stripers' home in Lawrenceville. The event offers a $100,000 first-place prize, and anglers are competing for the 2023 Progressive Angler of the Year title, with Todd Goade currently leading the race. The top 20 will qualify for the Championship Event in spring 2024 at Lake Amistad. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: Peggy Slappy – ESOG – TOM WAGES OBITS STORY 4: A failure to deliver for our children A shortage of the groundbreaking infant immunization nirsevimab is putting thousands of infants and toddlers at risk of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) hospitalization. This monoclonal antibody prevents RSV hospitalizations by 70%, but supply constraints are limiting its availability. The only manufacturer, Sanofi, recently announced a supply shortage, even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended nirsevimab for every child under 8 months during the RSV season. The CDC's response to the shortage is to prioritize high-risk infants. The shortage highlights systemic issues in children's healthcare, and the article emphasizes the need to prioritize child health, citing the rapid response to COVID-19 for adults and the consequences of the vaccine delay for young children. STORY 5: New blood test can help diagnose bipolar disorder Researchers at Cambridge University have developed a blood test to help diagnose bipolar disorder, which is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder. The test, used in combination with an online psychiatric assessment, identified biomarkers associated with the condition and was effective at diagnosing bipolar disorder in patients. While a psychiatric assessment is the most effective way to diagnose bipolar disorder, patients often face long waits and delays. The blood test, which is still a proof of concept, could be used to differentiate between the two disorders and provide quicker and more accurate diagnoses. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: JACKSON EMC – INGLES 9 – Lawrenceville STORY 6: 20-year-old Shot Dead Near Gwinnett Shopping Center Over the Weekend In the early hours of Saturday morning, a shooting investigation in Gwinnett County was initiated following a call to Northside Hospital's Sandy Springs campus. The hospital contacted police after friends brought in a 20-year-old man from Norcross with a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries. Detectives believe the shooting occurred at a business along Jimmy Carter Boulevard, although the victim's identity has not been released. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact them or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers, which offers a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment. STORY 7: Economic Signals: Understanding the Leading Economic Indicators The U.S. economy presents mixed signals, with some indicators suggesting a recession while others show growth. To make economic predictions, financial analysts and economists rely on the Leading Economic Indicators (LEI). The LEI, published by The Conference Board, combines 10 data sources, both financial and non-financial, such as the S&P 500 Index, unemployment claims, and average consumer expectations. These components cover various aspects of economic activity and provide insight into future economic conditions. However, the LEI is not a perfect system, as it doesn't provide precise timing for economic changes, and indicators can fluctuate without leading to a recession. While investors can use the LEI for tactical decisions, their overall portfolio strategy should remain consistent in different economic conditions. We'll have final thoughts after this. With a score of 99.95 out of 100, GSMST also ranked 19th nationally and 10th among STEM schools in the United States. The evaluation process considers factors like college readiness, reading and math proficiency, graduation rates, and more. While GETs have been embraced globally, their adoption has been slower in the U.S. due to financial incentives for utilities to build capital-intensive projects and the need for further validation, industry standards, and security considerations.
