Do you enjoy hearing stories about the songwriting process? Well….if you do, it doesn't get better than this! Legendary songwriter Jim Vallance joins me to share stories about the many classics he helped write!! What was the original title for the song “Summer of ‘69”? Is it really about the sexual position? What famous band was “Run To You” actually written for? What was it like recording with Tina Turner? What Aerosmith song did Jim think Steven “got wrong”? What songs was Jim a ghosts bassist on? What was it like writing a few songs for KISS? These are just some of the great stories you will hear on this episode. Quite honestly this one was one of my favorite guests I've ever had on my show!
We at The Wolf love hard rock, heavy metal, prog rock, classic rock and 80s MTV. While Bryan Adams may match a couple of those categories, we can't say that he was one of our very favorites. Because we were bombarded with him from 1983-86 on US radio and MTV and because girls seemed to like him (maybe his music too), he just didn't do it for us. However, his 5th album released in 1984, Reckless, boasts hit after hit like Heaven, Summer of '69, Run To You, Somebody, and It's Only Love. So as it turns 40 on November 5, we thought it would be a good idea to bring in friend to the show and Canadian rock guru Chris from My Rock N Roll Heaven to give us his perspective. 1984 not only saw the release of Reckless but the launch of Canadian MTV-type station Much Music which not only played videos but had to play a certain percentage of Canadian artists. That helped propel the album to become the first diamond selling album (1,000,000 in sales for Canada) in Canada by a Canadian artist. Aided in the songwriting by Jim Vallance and backed up on guitar by long time collaborator Keith Scott, Bryan had huge success in his home country, in the US and around the globe. The videos all had a theme and featured the same actor (Lysette Anthony) which helped create an image for Adams in the US. We go track x track and enlist Chris's Canadian perspective to see why this album was so popular and how it stands the test of time. With an unprecedented four Juno awards for songwriter of the year, Jim Vallance is one of Canada's pre-eminent songwriters and the creative force behind top tracks for artists like Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Joe Cocker and Glass Tiger. He played drums with the Vancouver band Prism, and wrote their first single, Spaceship Superstar (which was played on the Discovery Space Shuttle). After touring with Prism, he became a session musician before a chance meeting with 18-year-old Bryan Adams determined his songwriting career direction. The two began a fruitful decades-long songwriting collaboration. Adams's album, Cuts Like a Knife, yielded three hit singles co-written with Vallance, and reached platinum. The follow-up album Reckless cemented the Vallance-Adams writing partnership in the annals of rock music. No. 1 on the Canadian and U.S. album charts, it sold five times platinum, with six Vallance co-writes in the Top 15, including the duo's first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, Heaven; and the No. 1 Mainstream Rock tracks Run To You and Somebody. Vallance concentrated on songwriting, penning a non-stop stream of hit rock ballads, including the now-famous chart-topping charity single Tears Are Not Enough, a collaboration with Adams and fellow Canadian producer David Foster. Jim's creative talent has benefitted top international acts like Pat Benatar, Roger Daltry, Neil Diamond, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Joan Jett, The Go-Go's, Rick Springfield, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Anne Murray, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Chilliwack, Loverboy, Toronto, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS and The Scorpions. Vallance went on to collaborate with Adams on songs for the Broadway show Pretty Woman: The Musical. He has served on the boards of SOCAN, the Songwriters Association of Canada, and FACTOR, is a member of the Order of Canada, and boasts 22 SOCAN Classic awards and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
W/C 3rd June 2024I got into Bryan Adams before the Reckless album came out. So before Summer of 69, and before Run To You.I had a friend called Steve Nicholson way back in the day, and we used to hang out and listen to music, and one day he put on the cassette of Cuts Like A Knife. Mind blown.Of course the only reason I have thought back to that moment at 06:43 on a Saturday morning, is because I was trying to come up with a title for an episode that would reference the D-Day celebrations that took place this week. And Bryan had the answer. The song is from a much underrated album called Into The Fire, which I could also have used to describe the kind of week Rishi has had.Stay safe.Remembrance Day - Bryan AdamsJourney HomeLewis Goodall Interview Therapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. W/C 4th April 2022 I didn't expect to be mentioning so many things about my hometown this week, but nevertheless they are in there and so this song seemed appropriate. Of course, what makes it perfect is that the decision to reference it is both self-fulfilling & circular. I was a Bryan Adams fan before Reckless, so before Run To You, It's Only Love & Summer of 69. I got into BA because of the Cuts Like A Knife album and by default this song. That was 1983, and it evokes memories of listening to this album with my mate Steve Nicholson (who introduced me to it) whilst we hung out, talking about music and our shared love of Sheffield United. Stay safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbJ1zncZRKA (Take Me Back - Bryan Adams) https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/nadine-dorries-clip-resurfaces_uk_624cb11ee4b007d3845c1c4e (Nadine Dorries - Channel 4 Funding) Therapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. Episode 2 of Guess That Record has Jackson speaking with Jim Vallance. Jim is a Canadian songwriter who is best known for his longtime collaboration with Bryan Adams, co-writing songs like "Cuts Like a Knife," "Summer of 69," "Run To You," and "Heaven" (which hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100). Jim has also worked with artists like Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Glass Tiger, Kiss, Roger Daltrey, and many more. In this episode, Jim talks about his beginnings in music, his career writing with Bryan, and helping David Foster with "Tears Are Not Enough," the Canadian contribution to African famine relief in 1985.
Kenny G might be popular, but is he any good? What makes a creative project good or bad? What makes art/music good or bad for us? Are there things you used to think were good that you now think are bad? How about the reverse? When did your art start being "good"? What changed? 6 years ago, Aaron Burros was shot 5 times in a workplace shooting. Now, dubbed the "running servant" by friends, he's taking on the challenge of running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 weeks - to celebrate his 50th birthday, tell people about Jesus, and raise money for children battling cancer. Subscribe to the "Run The Race" podcast to hear extraordinary stories and advice from people like him. After my introduction of our guest - who I met last month at the Hatfield McCoy marathon in WV & KY - (5:21) our chat starts with Aaron of Houston TX describing being shot by an intruder at the retailer where he worked and how the trauma changed him. (14:01) How did the shooting affect his ability to run? Doctors say he should've died and will always be in pain, still with parts of 2 bullets in his glutes. Nearly a pro trail runner before being shot, Aaron says God has pulled him from the front of races to the back of the pack to minister to more people. Missing that "runner's high," (22:23) he runs now to, in part, battle PTSD and deal with mental health issues like depression and fears that had him hiding under sinks post-shooting. (27:05) He's seen the Lord heal him and open doors, checking his pride and ego at the door. (31:41) The day after he turned 50 years old in January, Aaron started his 50-50-50 goal, the 1st marathon being in GA and SC. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it even more challenging! (34:51) Having done those races in 27 states so far this year, he's getting messages from people all over the nation, talking to most people he meets about hope in Jesus. He says (39:36) each of these marathons are a different piece of the puzzle, each bringing opportunities to minister to others, even bringing him to tears. Aaron also has a journey of big weight loss. (43:43) At one point, he was close to 390 pounds down and dropped nearly 175 lbs. Hear what he says about deciding to make a "lifestyle change" that jumpstarted his activity and what he's changed for good about what he eats. (46:18) What's his motivation to lead others as the "running servant" and help make races a "party on the pavement"? (50:39) Aaron also has advice for runners on how to avoid injuries. The key word is form. With races still being canceled due to coronavirus precautions, (55:25) we also talk about what's next in his 50 marathon journey in 2021, what upcoming races or scenery he's looking forward to most, and where you can find out more about the #runningservant journey and donate, since hIs mantra is #irunforAiden and he hopes to raise $50,000 for St. Jude Children's Hospital. (1:00:15) After Aaron's closing prayer for Aiden and "running the greatest race for Jesus Christ," I go into my final segments of this episode: (1:05:46) I sing a quick bit of "Run To You" by Whitney Houston (sung to Aaron and I at our marathon) for "Stuck In My Head"...then some motivational speaker wisdom in "Parting Gift." Thanks for listening! And tell your friends about the #RunTheRace podcast. Also, write a quick review about it. For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.
