The episode comes from a webinar hosted by Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy relative to the Yes on Prop 127 | Cats Aren't Trophies ballot initiative in Colorado. The two groups are members of a broad coalition supporting the initiative, which would make illegal the cruel, inhumane, and unsporting practice of trophy-hunting mountain lions in the state. The practice is egregious because it uses packs of dogs equipped with telemetry devices to chase the cats up trees, where they remain terrified and unable to escape until a “hunter” shoots them down just to mount them as trophies. Hosted by Joseph Grove from the Animal Wellness Podcast, the event featured several guests. Wayne Pacelle is the founder and president of Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy. The Non-Profit Times has named him seven times as one of the nation's top 50 non-profit executives, and he is the author of two NYT bestselling books about animals and animal welfare. Wayne has led efforts to pass 1,500 state laws for animals, more than 100 federal laws and amendments, 30 ballot initiatives, and 500 corporate agreements. Samantha Miller leads our Yes on 127/Cats Aren't Trophies campaign and is Colorado state director for Animal Wellness Action. Her previous roles include Government Affairs Specialist for Miller Public Policy; Executive Director for Washington Wildlife First, and Wildlife Coexistence Campaigner for WildEarth Guardians. Dr. Jim Keen is the head of veterinary sciences for the Center for a Humane Economy. He worked as a veterinary infectious disease and public health researcher at the USDA in Nebraska and at the University of Nebraska for more than 30 years. Over the past decade has intensified his work as a proponent of sustainable agriculture and an advocate against livestock abuse. His current interests include working towards more animal-friendly agricultural-food systems and improving the welfare of industrial factory-farmed livestock and of animals used in biomedical or agricultural research. The group discussed the necessity of making the change to Colorado law, the broad support behind the initiative, and the role of mountain lions as part of a stable ecosystem and as important checks against the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.

Engage to support our work.Devin: what is your superpower?Samantha: The entrepreneurial journey, especially in small pharma, can be crushing at times. One of my superpowers is that I have developed the ability to not be torn down, not be stressed out in the face of sometimes heavy, discouraging news. That has allowed me to persevere.Devin: What is your superpower?Kate: I think my superpower is optimism. I really believe there's no problem that cannot be solved. In today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the pleasure of speaking with Samantha Miller and Kate Voyten from Cadence OTC. Samantha, the co-founder and CEO, shared fascinating insights about their mission to make contraceptives more accessible.Samantha explained that Cadence OTC is not just a business; it's a crusade to empower individuals by increasing over-the-counter access to safe and affordable contraceptives. This access is not only about convenience but also about empowering individuals with choices regarding their reproductive health. One point that Samantha passionately made stands out: "We're in a unique position to fill this huge market need." This statement underscores the gap Cadence OTC aims to bridge by making contraceptives available next to everyday items in drugstores, a revolutionary shift from the prescription-only model.Their journey involves intricate collaboration with the FDA and extensive consumer education to ensure that the switch to over-the-counter access is both effective and safe. Samantha shared the complexities involved in this transition, noting, "It involves a lot of consumer studies as well as intensive collaboration with FDA."But perhaps the most powerful aspect of our conversation was the broader impact of their work. Samantha eloquently highlighted the potential societal benefits: reducing unintended pregnancies and thereby improving the lives of women and families across the nation. "The big-picture goal that we have of reducing unintended pregnancy for everyone and making sure that all children are wanted and intended is so important," she stated. As we continued our discussion, it was clear that the work Cadence OTC is doing could reshape the landscape of women's health. By making birth control as accessible as buying a pack of gum, they are not just selling a product; they are fostering a movement towards greater personal agency and health equity. This is more than health care reform; it's a cultural shift towards empowering individuals to make informed choices about their bodies and futures. We delved into the Wefunder crowdfunding campaign launched by Cadence OTC. Kate Voyten shared that this campaign marks the first open opportunity for public investment in their transformative initiative to bring birth control over the counter. This effort not only aims to improve access to contraceptives but also targets what Kate described as "contraceptive deserts" across the United States—areas with limited access to crucial health products. The campaign is a call to action, inviting everyone to join in supporting a mission with both immediate impact and a visionary long-term goal, illustrating a potent blend of entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to public health.AI Episode Summary1. Introduction to Cadence OTC: The episode begins with Devin introducing Samantha Miller and Kate Voyton from Cadence OTC, a company working to make birth control accessible over-the-counter (OTC) and promoting their crowdfunding campaign.2. Mission of Cadence OTC: Samantha explains that Cadence OTC, based in Oakland, California, aims to increase access to safe, effective, and affordable contraceptives via over-the-counter availability, addressing a significant market need.3. Significance of OTC Birth Control: Kate details the process and challenges of moving birth control pills from prescription-only to OTC, emphasizing the huge shift this represents in accessibility and convenience for consumers.4. FDA Collaboration and Consumer Studies: Samantha describes the extensive process of working with the FDA for over six years, including consumer studies and dealing with regulatory details to ensure consumers understand the product's safe usage.5. Market Size and Opportunity: Kate highlights the size of the women's health and reproductive health market, estimating it at around $21 billion, and the continuous need and commercial opportunity for accessible contraception to address unintended pregnancies.6. Impact on Unintended Pregnancies and Abortions: The conversation shifts to how accessible birth control could reduce unintended pregnancies and abortions, with a focus on giving women and families more control.7. Discussion on Teenagers and Access: Addressing concerns about teenagers having more access to contraceptives, Samantha emphasizes data showing that contraceptive access doesn't increase sexual activity but can help prevent unintended teen pregnancies.8. Crowdfunding to Improve Access: Kate discusses the crowdfunding campaign aimed at supporting the mission of making emergency contraceptive pills more accessible in convenience stores, potentially serving as a bridge to making the birth control pill available OTC.9. Superpowers for Good: Devin asks Samantha and Kate about their "superpowers" or unique abilities that have helped them in their mission, touching on perseverance, optimism, and pragmatic problem-solving.10. Community Influence and Future Steps: The episode ends with a story illustrating community support and the importance of making contraceptives more accessible. Samantha invites listeners to learn more through Cadence OTC's website and their Wefunder campaign, expressing hope for continued success in their mission. How to Develop Resilience As a SuperpowerSamantha possesses a profound superpower of resilience. Her entrepreneurial journey, particularly in the challenging realm of small pharmaceuticals, has equipped her with an exceptional ability to withstand setbacks without succumbing to stress. This resilience has been crucial in navigating the tumultuous path of bringing innovative health solutions to market, enabling her to persevere where many might falter. An exemplifying moment of Samantha using her superpower occurred during a critical phase with the FDA. Despite receiving discouraging news about needing additional work before advancing to a final trial, which led some team members to quit, Samantha rallied her team. She reminded them of the significant hurdles overcome by others in similar dire straits, thereby reinforcing her team's resolve and commitment to their groundbreaking work. Some simple tips for developing Samantha's superpower are:- Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.- Maintain focus and calm under pressure to lead effectively.- Cultivate a positive team environment that can endure setbacks.By following Samantha's example and advice, you can make resilience a skill. She combines a steadfast belief that no problem is insurmountable with a practical approach to solving it. This blend allows her to navigate the complexities of commercial operations and consumer needs effectively, fostering success in ambitious projects.Kate's pragmatic optimism shone during her efforts to introduce Cadence OTC's products into convenience stores. Despite initial rejections from store owners wary of investing in a new product, Kate persisted. Her determination paid off dramatically when, during a conversation with a hesitant store owner, a customer intervened to emphasize the product's importance, resulting in the owner placing an order. This incident highlights how Kate's optimism, combined with practical engagement, can turn skepticism into support. Some simple tips for developing pragmatic optimism are:- Approach problem-solving with a combination of data-driven insights and a positive outlook.- Build and maintain relationships based on trust and mutual benefit.- Be persistent in pursuing goals, even in the face of initial rejection.By following Kate's example and advice, you can make pragmatic optimism a skill. Did you know that nearly half of all pregnancies in America are unintended? And that percentage skyrockets when we're talking about teen pregnancies, more than three-quarters of which are unintended.  While teen pregnancies and teen births are thankfully at an all-time low in the US, we're still behind countries like the UK and Canada in this regard. A big reason teen pregnancies have fallen so dramatically in recent decades is simply that it's much easier to have access to contraceptives. But as evidenced by nations like the UK and Canada, there's still more work we Americans can do. After all, it's easy for men to get condoms everywhere, but not nearly as easy for women to get birth control. Females who have babies as teenagers are more likely to stay or fall into poverty, attain lower levels of education, have more health problems, and generally have worse life outcomes for the mother and child. I should note that I happen to be married to someone who defied these odds and turned out just fine despite being the product of teen pregnancy, but still, the statistics speak volumes. And in a world with eight billion of us and counting, it goes without saying that it'd be preferable if the only new people joining us were both intended and wanted by their parents. A big barrier toward that end is that if women want to go on birth control, typically they require a prescription from a doctor, which is of course a hurdle, especially for teens. That's a hurdle that Cadence OTC is working to overcome, and we've got their CEO Samantha Miller on the show to talk all about it. (Side note unrelated to this episode: Samantha's is also a plant-based foods advocate and is affiliated with the Good Food Institute!) Cadence has raised $35 million in venture capital over the past six years to bring to market over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pills for females, both in the form of OTC birth control pills and OTC morning after pills. As you can imagine, this is important work no matter what, but especially in light of the Supreme Court decision ending federal protections for abortion rights, greater and easier access to contraceptives is something all of us should be able to support. In fact, just this year, in 2023, the FDA for the first time approved an OTC birth control pills for women.  Impressively, Cadence just inked a deal with Lil Drug Store Products, which services 180,000 retail locations, including convenience stores, to start carrying Cadence's Morning After pill starting in January 2024. Not only will this pill be OTC, but it will be half the price of the leading Morning After pill. As Samantha points out, it's imperative that we make it as easy, cheap, and convenient for women to control their reproductive destiny, which is exactly what Cadence OTC is working to do.   Discussed in this episode Our past episodes on family planning with Your Choice Therapeutics (male contraceptives), Dr. Escar Guarin (World Vasectomy Day), and Family Empowerment Media (family planning in the developing world). Pew Reserarch Center says US teen birth rates are falling thanks to greater access to contraceptive care. Samantha recommends reading The Birth of the Pill and listening to How I Built This More about Samantha Miller Samantha serves as co-Founder and CEO of Cadence OTC, on a mission to increase over-the-counter (OTC) access to safe, effective, affordable contraceptives.  She is a small pharma executive leader with more than two decades of experience in strategic partnering, product and technology acquisitions, commercial planning, supply chain, regulatory management, and corporate financing.  Samantha started her career as a scientist, and quickly found her passion for building new companies. She has deep entrepreneurial experience having served as chief business officer for pharma start-ups InCarda Therapeutics and Dance Biopharm. She also led business development for mid-market ventures Theravance, Nektar, and Onyx, and values her early training at P&G Pharmaceuticals.   She has negotiated and closed more than 50 licensing & partnering agreements with a total aggregate deal value of over $3 billion, and she has led more than fifteen equity financing rounds with total funds raised >$300 million. In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two cases where women were killed in golf cart accidents right after they were married. Samantha Miller and Aric Hutchinson held their wedding in April 2023, after months of planning.  Sam looked radiant in her beautiful white dress and as she left the reception with her new husband, she told him that she never wanted the night to end.  Minutes later, Jamie Lee Komoroski (25) crashed into the golf cart that was carrying the couple to their accommodation.  The crash happened at 65mph in a 25mph zone.  Samantha was killed instantly and Aric required many surgeries.  Jamie Lee's blood alcohol level was 0.261. Marina and Robbie Morgan were married in Sydney, Australia in 2022.  They had previously postponed their wedding due to the pandemic.  The couple held a lavish ceremony and jetted off to the beautiful Hamilton Island for their honeymoon.  Golf carts are the primary mode of transport on the island.  Just days into their honeymoon, Robbie noticed that the battery on their cart was low and he attempted to make a u-turn to return to charge the vehicle.  The cart flipped on top of Marina, killing her at the scene.  Robbie is facing charges in relation to his new wife's death. There has been a big update in the case of the Australian Mushroom Deaths, which we covered on a previous episode.  Erin Patterson has been arrested and charged with both murder and attempted murder.  We run through the latest in this episode.      Read our blogs for these cases - here! The award went to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L'Huillier for their study of the tiny part of each atom that races around the center and that is fundamental to virtually everything. Electrons move around so fast that they have been out of reach of human efforts to isolate them, but experts says that by looking at the tiniest fraction of a second possible, scientists now have a “blurry” glimpse of them and that opens up whole new sciences. The secretary-general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the award Tuesday in Stockholm. WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Matt Gaetz says he'll try to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a fellow Republican, from his leadership position this week. Gaetz's announcement Sunday comes after McCarthy relied on Democratic support to pass legislation on Saturday that avoided a government shutdown. Gaetz is a Florida Republican who's a longtime McCarthy nemesis. In response, McCarthy says, “So be it. Bring it on. Let's get over with it and let's start governing." Gaetz contends McCarthy was in “brazen, material breach” of agreements he made with House Republicans in January when he ran for speaker. No speaker has ever been removed from office through the kind of move that Gaetz says he'll try. The lawmakers made their comments on the Sunday news shows. TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Opening statements are set to begin in the trial of three Tacoma, Washington, police officers charged in the death of Manny Ellis, a 33-year-old Black man, in 2020. Before he died, Ellis was punched, shocked with a Taser, put in a chokehold and held face down on the sidewalk as he pleaded that he couldn't breathe. Officers Matthew Collins and Christopher Burbank, both white, have been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. Officer Timothy Rankine, who is Asian American, has been charged with manslaughter. All three have pleaded not guilty. Opening statements begin Tuesday. The trial in Pierce County Superior Court is expected to run until early December. FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) — The Powerball jackpot climbed to an estimated $1.2 billion after no one beat the immense odds and won the giant prize. The winning numbers drawn Monday night were: 12, 26, 27, 43, 47 and the Powerball 5. The prize on the line for the next drawing Wednesday night has grown so massive because there have been 33 consecutive drawings since someone won the jackpot. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The $1.2billion jackpot is for a sole winner who takes an annuity, paid annually over 30 years. Winners taking the cash option would receive an estimated $551 million. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The U.N. Security Council has voted to send a multinational force led by Kenya to Haiti to help combat violent gangs in the troubled country. The resolution drafted by the U.S. was approved Monday with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions from Russia and China. The resolution authorizes the force to deploy for one year, with a review after nine months. It is the first time a force will be deployed to Haiti since a U.N.-approved mission nearly 20 years ago. A deployment date has not been set, although U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said a security mission to Haiti could deploy “in months.” WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army is launching a sweeping overhaul of its recruiting to focus more on young people who've spent time in college or are job hunting early in their careers. The Army's aim is to reverse years of enlistment shortfalls. A major part of this is the formation of a new professional force of recruiters instead of relying on soldiers assigned to the task. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth tells The Associated Press some of the changes will begin in the next 90 days but a wholesale transformation to turn around years of decline is several years in the making. Wormuth says the Army hasn't met its annual goal for new enlistment contracts since 2014. The Seahawks use their defense to beat the Giants, the Brewers will be without Woodruff for the wild card round, MLB games went quicker and Russ Francis dies. Correspondent Chuck Freimund reports. On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. CT: NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump has sat through hours of sometimes testy opening statements in a fraud lawsuit that could cost him control of some of his most prized properties. As he left court during a lunch break Monday, he called it a "disgraceful trial.” Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James' lawsuit accuses the Republican ex-president and his company of deceiving banks, insurers and others by habitually lying about his wealth in financial statements. Trump attorney Alina Habba said in the trial's opening statements Monday that Trump's holdings are “Mona Lisa properties” that can command top dollar. The judge already has ruled Trump committed fraud in his business dealings. If the ruling is upheld on appeal, it could force Trump to give up several New York properties. STOCKHOLM (AP) — Two scientists have won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 and that could be used to develop other shots in the future. Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman were cited for contributing vaccine development during what the panel that awarded the prize called “one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.” The panel said the pair changed "our understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system.” Simply injecting lab-grown mRNA into the body triggered an inflammatory reaction that usually destroyed it. Karikó and Weissman figured out a tiny modification to the building blocks of RNA that made it stealthy enough to slip past those immune defenses. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has opened its new term with a case about prison terms for drug dealers and rejections of hundreds of appeals, including one from an attorney who pushed a plan to keep former President Donald Trump in power. The only case argued Monday concerns the meaning of the word “and” in a federal law dealing with prison terms for low-level drug dealers. The length of thousands of sentences a year is at stake. The term is shaping up as an important one for social media as the court grapples with applying older laws and rulings to the digital age. BROKEN BOW, Okla. (AP) — A woman riding a lawnmower next to an Oklahoma airport runway was killed when she was struck by the wing of an airplane. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says 27-year-old Samantha Hayes died Friday at Broken Bow Municipal Airport, about 185 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. The pilot of the single engine aircraft tells investigators he saw Hayes after touching down and tried to pull up. But she was struck by a wing. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating. The FAA and the Broken Bow city manager, who is listed as the airport manager, did not immediately return phone calls for comment. ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The Emirati president-designate of the upcoming United Nations COP28 climate talks has called on oil and gas companies to be “central to the solution” to fighting climate change as the industry boosts its production to enjoy rising energy prices. His remarks on Monday came at a marquee oil industry event highlighting the state oil company he oversees — either feeding the concerns of those already critical of his appointment while also drawing applause from the same energy firms he wants to court at the upcoming COP28 talks starting in November. FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Two bars accused of overserving a woman who authorities say drunkenly hit a golf cart carrying a newlywed couple away from their reception, killing the bride, have reached a tentative settlement with the groom, who was seriously injured. Two bars agreed to pay “certain sums” to Aric Hutchinson that were described by his lawyer as “reasonable,” according to a Sept. 28 petition for approval in Charleston County Court in South Carolina. A judge must approve the settlement. The April 28 crash killed Samantha Miller, and wounded three other occupants of the golf cart. Aric Hutchinson survived with a brain injury and multiple broken bones. NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials plan to endorse a common antibiotic as a post-sex morning after pill that gay and bisexual men can use to avoid some increasingly common sexually transmitted diseases. The long-awaited guideline says doxycycline can prevent certain illnesses if taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. One official says it's an innovative step to help battle record levels of STD infections. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention proposal was released Monday. The agency plans to finalize it after a 45-day public comment period. WASHINGTON (AP) — New polling finds America's college campuses are seen as far friendlier to liberals than to conservatives when it comes to free speech. Polling from the The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the University of Chicago Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression finds 47% of adult Americans say liberals are free to express their views on college campuses, while 20% say the same of conservatives. Free speech debates have roiled campuses in recent years, with conflicts arising over conservative guest speakers. Republican lawmakers in dozens of states have proposed bills limiting public colleges from teaching topics considered divisive. The poll finds 30% of Americans say states should be allowed to restrict what state universities teach. VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has suggested there might be ways to bless same-sex unions. The Vatican on Monday published a letter Francis wrote to five cardinals on July 11 after receiving a list of five questions, or “dubia,” from them a day earlier. In the letter, Francis suggests that such blessings could be studied if there was no implication that the union was a marriage. The Vatican holds that marriage is an indissoluble union between man and woman. But even Francis has voiced support for civil laws extending legal benefits to same-sex spouses, and bishops in parts of Europe have been blessing same-sex unions without any Vatican censure. On this week's AP Religion Roundup, Ideological rifts among U.S. bishops are in the spotlight, wait times lengthen for clergy green cards, and officers stop a potential church attack. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is a senior producer for Lee Enterprises. Today, Caralee interviews another incredible Lawyer from the Scalable Business Lounge, Samantha Miller from Clarity Lawyers! Samantha started her business in October 2020 and is already growing as a leader in her firm by hiring a team! With a lot of planning and years of gaining experience in the legal field, Samantha has made her dreams a reality and opened the doors! Samantha started her business journey at previous firms, figuring out what aligned with her values and gaining all the legal experience she could to take that next step. She prides herself on having life experience to best relate to her clients and provide the best solutions possible. The main concern Samantha had when she started Clarity Lawyers was what so many new law firm owners face, and that is how do I get clients coming through the door. Taking a step back and sacrificing income when starting a business is genuinely terrifying; however, in the podcast, Samantha discusses how she overcame these hurdles and made her dreams a reality. Fast forward to now, Samantha has employed a team and replaced her income doing what she loves. Having sat on opening her law firm for years, she now says the best piece of advice to her past self would be to back herself! Samantha aims to make Clarity Lawyers a safe and friendly environment for all of their family law clients and deliver the best possible service while growing rapidly. Samantha has grown through the guidance of the Scalable Business Lounge and has found that it has helped her feel supported and motivated. If you would love to work alongside Samantha and other like-minded law firm owners to unravel your full potential, I know just the place for you! For many Christians today, the notion that demons should play a role in our faith—or that they even exist—may seem dubious. But that was certainly not the case for John Chrysostom, the "golden-tongued" early church preacher, and theologian who became the bishop of Constantinople near the end of the fourth century. Dr. Samantha L. Miller has found demons and the devil permeate his rhetoric. But to what end? Lynn Cohick and Samantha Miller unpack how understanding the role of demons in Chrysostom's soteriology gives us insight into what it means to be human and what it means to follow Christ in a world fraught with temptation and danger. Chrysostom's golden words continue to demonstrate relevance to Christians in today's world. Buy your copy of Chrysostom's Devil today - https://bit.ly/AJPodcast_SamanthaMiller
