In Texas, convicted murderer Ed Bell claimed he killed 11 girls between Houston and Galveston back in the 1970s. Reporter Lise Olsen and detective Fred Paige investigated those claims and uncovered eerie ties between Bell and several unresolved murders. In particular, they focused on three cases: all of them, double homicides of teenage best friends. Did Ed Bell really kill Debbie Ackerman and Maria Johnson, Sharon Shaw and Renee Johnson, and Brooks Bracewell and Georgia Geer? Why did investigators dismiss his confessions so quickly? And what about Ed's claim of a massive brainwashing conspiracy called “The Program”? You can watch Lise and Fred's investigation unfold in the docuseries The Eleven. And check out Lise's nonfiction book, The Scientist and the Serial Killer, debuting in April 2025: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/720488/the-scientist-and-the-serial-killer-by-lise-olsen/ Keep up with us on Instagram @serialkillerspodcast! September 18th: Michael Self's Trial Ends (1974) The prospect of wrongful conviction is a terrifying one. On September 18th 1974 a man's trial came to an end and his fate soon decided in a case that he claimed he was absolutely innocent of. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murders_of_Rhonda_Johnson_and_Sharon_Shaw, https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Rhonda_Johnson_and_Sharon_Shaw, https://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Some-suspect-serial-killer-in-1971-Galveston-2078025.php, https://worddisk.com/wiki/Murders_of_Rhonda_Johnson_and_Sharon_Shaw/,
[Digital Gonzo 2013] The 150th episode of Digital Gonzo. This was a one-off show inspired by the episode of Community 'Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'. It's a sit-down gaming session conducted over Skype with myself as Dungeon Master and my guests as a team of adventurers. For this one we were using the flexible, simple ruleset of Advanced Fighting Fantasy by Graham Bottley which itself stems from the gamebooks of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone (The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, Deathtrap Dungeon) and detailed in the starter book Dungeoneer. This is the first of the two adventures within that book. I wanted to bring you guys something different, in the style I have honed over the years so there's music and sound FX as well as a hefty chunk of silliness and getting into character. The lengthier fights have been edited for pacing but you're mainly missing a lot of dice rolls. The team that begins this story comprises of the following. Thrale Copperhelm: A tough-as-nails dwarf, played by Neil Taylor of GameBurst Lastern Darkfire: An elf fresh out of the forests, played by Mark Reay of The A.I. Bots Kellis Payge: A human mage from the city watch of Chalice, played by Sharon Shaw of School of Movies Harron Brondyn: A sarcastic thief played by Matt Ramsey of Do Try This at Home Focus is on character and story over action and complex systems, almost closer to an audio drama than the recording of a game. The guest soundtrack for this week is the original World of Warcraft OST by Jason Hayes, Tracy W. Bush, Derek Duke, and Glenn Stafford. Many thanks to my guests, who played brilliantly and went easy on me in my first-time role as Dungeon Master. The combat rules were still being learned by all of us, also Gonzo is an adult podcast and we use adult language in this. And thank you all for making this one of the warmest, smartest, funniest communities on the internet for 150 episodes of Gonzo.

November 15, 1971. Galveston, Texas. 15-year old Debbie Ackerman and 15-year old Maria Johnson are seen climbing into a white van outside an ice cream shop, but they never return home. Days later, the girls' bodies are found in a bayou and they are bound, nude from the waist down and have been shot to death. After several decades, a convicted murderer named Edward Harold Bell sends out letters in which he confesses to having killed Debbie and Maria. Bell also claims to be responsible for eleven murders which occurred in Texas during the 1970s and refers to the victims as “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven”, but no conclusive evidence ever links him to these crimes. This week, “The Trail Went Cold” releases the conclusion of our extensive two-part anniversary episode on the murders of eleven female victims known as “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven”: 15-year old Debbie Ackerman, 15-year old Maria Johnson, 14-year old Rhonda Renee Johnson, 13-year old Sharon Shaw, 13-year old Colette Wilson, 19-year old Gloria Gonzales, 12-year old Brooks Bracewell, 14-year old Georgia Geer, 14-year old Brenda Jones, 16-year old Kimberley Pitchford and 12-year old Suzanne Bowers. If you have information about any of these cases, please contact the tip line of the Galveston County District Attorney's Office at 1-800-566-2209. August 4, 1971. Galveston, Texas. After spending the day at the beach, 14-year old Rhonda Renee Johnson and 13-year old Sharon Shaw fail to return home and their skeletal remains are found in a bayou months later. A suspect named Michael Lloyd Self is eventually taken into custody and confesses to the murders, but even though he maintains his confession was coerced and that he is innocent, Self is still convicted of the crime. Decades later, another convicted murderer named Edward Harold Bell becomes an alternate suspect after he sends confession letters to the authorities. Bell claims he was responsible for the murders of eleven female victims which took place in Texas during the 1970s and refers to them as “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven”. His confessions also hint that two of these victims may have been Rhonda Renee Johnson and Sharon Shaw. To commemorate the seven-year anniversary of “The Trail Went Cold”, we are releasing a special two-part episode on “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven” and exploring a number of unsolved murders which may have been committed by the same perpetrator. This week, Part 1 will cover the murders of Rhonda Renee Johnson and Sharon Shaw and the controversial conviction of Michael Lloyd Self. Special thanks to listener Amy Harber for narrating the opening of this episode. Ashley opens the episode with the disappearance of Ann Marie Shaw Godbey, and the clues that might bring closure to what happened. Cody covers the case of two bodies found in a lake, one with a crucifix inside its mouth. This would be the "solved" case of Sharon Shaw and Rhonda Johnson's murders, unless you look closely at the details. The perpetrator could have gotten away after all.
This week we're talking about a film that has about as firm a grasp on its title as it does the science behind how time loops work. The movie is EDGE OF TOMORROW, and this week we welcome Alex and Sharon Shaw from the School of Movies podcast to help us sort out all this nonsense. You can find School of Movies wherever you listen to your podcasts and at schoolofmovies.podbean.com
In case you didn't catch this at the end of the Company of Wolves show yet, Sharon, myself and even Willow have helped put together an anthology of Gothic tales written by members of the School of Movies community. It's available to buy right now on Amazon and if as many of you as possible buy it at once, talk about it on social media, (and if you want to be extra specially helpful leave us an honest, positive review when you've finished and recommend it to friends) that should help it get some visibility. It's called "The Lights from Distant Bonfires" and we've been preparing it for many months now. These stories are stirring and spine-tingling and should conjure up haunting images to dwell on this Fall. We are keeping the price low and selling the paperback at cost to get it into as many trembling hands as possible. It's episode 107 and the Sinister Sisters are not fans of Twitter. Does no one else think Peyton Manning would be great at Sims? In part one of today's group episode, Sarah dives into the history of the foreboding 25 acre stretch of land in League City, Texas known as the Killing Fields due to the substantial amount of human remains discovered in the area. Morgan then covers the disappearance and murders of Rhonda Johnson and Sharon Shaw which led to the (possibly coerced) confession and conviction of Michael Lloyd Self. Sarah then ends with her story on the stinking bag of poop himself Edward Harold Bell who in prison claimed to have killed the “eleven who went to Heaven.” If you want to bury something, just bury a plant. On today's episode, Karen and Georgia cover the murders of Sharon Shaw and Rhonda "Renee" Johnson and the history of the Miranda rights.
Rhonda Johnson and Sharon Shaw both go missing from Galveston Island on August 4, 1971. They are never seen again. It would not be till their bodies are discovered near Webster Texas in Taylor Bayou that their families would finally have answers to what happened to them. When Michael Lloyd Self confessed to killing them people believe this nightmare is over, but it only give us more question than answers. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

James is just there at the D&D table going "Goddamn it, are you aiming for a total party wipe?!" --- Holy shit, we get punchy in this episode. (As in goofy, not Abigail style punchy). Part one of our penultimate Secret Rooms episode ahead, discussing chapters 21 through 24. We talk about ghosts, James and Abigail's dynamic when there is no one else around, the usefulness of the Vox Tube both in-universe and narratively, and how Secret Rooms is essentially bookended by two heartfelt recordings. It's interesting talking about where James and Abigail began, even as we are in the process of recording our interviews with Alex and Sharon Shaw in regards to the culmination of the Uncivil Outlaw Audiodrama. "It's a 21st century take on an era hundreds of years removed that isn't afraid of holding gothic up to the light." Welcome to part one of our final episode on the New Century Multiverse story, Let Them Go. Even with thorough editing, this episode ended up very long, and after the experience with our introductory episode that covered chapters 1-5, I decided not to do that to you, or myself. So our final discussion is divided into two episodes, the next to be released the following Monday. This go around, we reflect on the story through the lens of the gothic genre, which Toby and I boned up on prior to tackling this episode. We talk about the components of said genre, and where the story plays it straight, and where it necessarily, wonderfully diverges. We learn about the subgenre of the Female Gothic, and we have a lot of laughs along the way. One of the great things about finally talking about the story as a whole is nothing is held back, but we don't have to dive too deeply into heavy subjects: we already did most of that heavy lifting. #BlackLivesMatter #PrideMonth Recommended links for fun and profit learning: Sharon Shaw, modelling for the LTG cover https://twitter.com/NewCenturyShaw/status/1230572711455399937?s=19 The original podcast graphic Alex designed on the fly: https://twitter.com/NewCenturyShaw/status/1221842430368022528?s=19 Links we used to learn more about Gothic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_fiction (specifically Elements of Gothic and The Female Gothic) https://www.nature.com/articles/palcomms201742 https://epublications.marquette.edu/gothic_supernatural/ The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com Intro is "Moonrise" by Chad Crouch Outro is "Bird Set Free" by Sia

Exciting news listeners - Two Shrinks recently guested on the School of Movies podcast where Amy and Hunter were asked to come on and help discuss Pixar’s masterpiece that explores the function of emotions - Inside Out. This is a movie that therapists frequently refer people to watch to help them understand emotions. School of Movies is hosted by the fabulous Alex and Sharon Shaw and they do super in-depth analysis of films (check out their Good Will Hunting episode for a great discussion of therapy and trauma). In the Inside Out episode we have a really good discussion on the function of core emotions shown in the film : Joy, Anger, Disgust, Fear and Sadness - and of course we make sure that we relate things back to therapy and therapy processes. Also this week on the show we hear from Sharon Shaw, she gives us a little sneak peak into the next podcast. Her Husband Michael's documentary, "The Kaleidoscope Guy at the Market" will be playing at the Pike Place Market theater in Post Alley. [School of Movies 2016] We start off with my initial thoughts on coming back from the cinema. The first 16 minutes is relatively spoiler-free and Sharon asks me the following questions. Then we get to the rotten meat of the whole bloody affair. Then there’s a considerably more positive ten minute piece from Eric Jones Then we hit the main event and Bob Chipman joins myself, Sharon Shaw and Jerome McIntosh to discuss the film in a more meta context, including what DC Warner’s options are, moving forward. 00.00.30: First Impressions 00.40.00: A More Positive Response 00.56.00: The Main Event
This is chapter 7 from New Century Book 5: The Princess Thieves If you want to hear more it is available on Bandcamp in full audiobook form. A swashbuckling comedy fantasy adventure from the creator of Tiger's Eye and Arlington. In 1873 an enormous doorway between realms opened up in the north of London and on the other side was a parallel British Isles named Britannica. This place was home to two new races, the short, stubborn, Duart and the hulking, green-skinned Akka. What they brought with them when they stepped through to aid us and settle in our damaged country was an army of tough firecasters to see off our monster problem and a class system that humans fit roughly in the middle of. In the week this story takes place, Gwendoline, the last remaining family member of Britain's royal Saxe-Coburg bloodline is preparing to be married to the Duart lord; Aaron of Britannica. Before that happens the young princess will be going on the adventure of a lifetime, through the dangerous, filthy streets of London, through the doorway between worlds and beyond. Part of the New Century Multiverse, a saga set across many worlds with each story constituting a piece of the grand mosaic. The first six stories in New Century Phase 1 can be listened to in any order... [Digital Drift 2014] On this very special episode (in the week I'm celebrating eight years in the podcasting game) I gathered Bob "Moviebob" Chipman, Parris Lilly of "Gamertag Radio" and Joe Cunningham of the "Cinematic Universe" podcast, and along with my wife and co-host Sharon Shaw we asked ourselves... Which are the seven most important superhero movies to date? Not our favourites, not best, most important. We debated them up and down the history and our conclusions may surprise you... or they may be the exact seven you chose in which case you have your finger well and truly on the pulse because we spent ages on this. It's a brilliant episode and one I was so proud to host. A big thank you to our guests who brought all kinds of intelligent and reasoned viewpoints along with them.
[Digital Drift 2014] With the world unbalanced, Korra and her companions struggle to manage the repercussions from the pendulum-swing back from chaos to order. This time we're talking about Prince Wu, Kuvira, some old swamp lady, and the rather contentious coupling at the end of the series. In a pinch of nostalgia I went back to the intro from that first Korra show we did all those years back... well two and a half, but it feels like a lot longer. And to close out, the world premier of the trailer for Season 2 of New Century. Joining me once again are my co-host; Sharon Shaw, Daniel Floyd, the voice of Extra Credits, Joshua Garrity of the Cane and Rinse podcast and The Animation Archives, and Jerome McIntosh, now of GameBurst.
[Digital Drift 2015] The long awaited, much-demanded continuation of the Avatar podcasts is here. We're releasing four podcasts throughout this month, two each for Books 3 & 4 of The Legend of Korra. It's the last we'll see of the series, maybe forever, but certainly for a while, so let's take our time and enjoy ourselves. Joining me once again after another year I have my now co-host; Sharon Shaw, Daniel Floyd, the voice of Extra Credits, Joshua Garrity of the Cane and Rinse podcast and The Animation Archives, and Jerome McIntosh, now of GameBurst. Duane Griffiths from the previous six episodes couldn't make it, but sends his regards. We cover the following themes; Behind the scenes and going digital-only, renewal and rebirth, duty and responsibility, family and frustration, anarchy, freedom and control.
[Digital Drift 2014] We cover the divisive second season of one of the most talked about and exceptional animated shows ever created. This time round the Miyazaki influence is even more prominent, the animation veers from a little bit sloppy to more breathtakingly beautiful than it's ever been, there are character and narrative issues, longtime fans still calling foul and love and hate being bent back and forth like so much water and fire. Joining me once again after a year I have Daniel Floyd, the voice of Extra Credits, Joshua Garrity of the Cane and Rinse podcast and The Animation Archives, Sharon Shaw of Do Try This at Home, Jerome McIntosh of GameBurst and from Gonzo Planet, Duane Griffiths. As well as this epic round-table session I have included essay materials from Andy Rodriguez and Nama Chibitty, offering some quite differing perspectives on the overarching saga.
[Digital Gonzo 2012] This covers the first season of the follow up to The Legend of Aang. Major spoilers throughout so we heartily suggest that you not only see the entirety of Korra first but seek out the original series in case you weren't aware how highly we regard it. Joining me once again to talk about Airbending, extremist solutions, and the challenge of matching the quality and storytelling of the finest animated show ever created, I have Daniel Floyd, Pixar animator and the voice of Extra Credits, Joshua Garrity of the Cane and Rinse podcast and The Animation Archives, and from Gonzo Planet, Sharon Shaw, Jerome McIntosh and Duane Griffiths. Thank you to all our new listeners for your support and questions. You can contact me through the Gonzo Planet website and you should all definitely check out the forums and leave iTunes reviews, Facebook likes and jubulant tweets. Stay tuned to the very end to hear a trailer for Batman: Breakdown an original audio drama I released for episode #90 and maybe the best thing I've helped create aside from my daughter. Next week, Gonzo Gaming returns with The 10 Most Important Games of this Generation in Digital Gonzo #100.

[Digital Drift 2014] Welcome to the introductory episode of Digital Drift. With the first two volumes of my podcast, Digital Cowboys and Digital Gonzo now complete that makes this the 370th podcast episode I've put out. For the third volume I have recruited a new co-host to share the creative load; my wife, Sharon Shaw. She'll be offering the show a second voice and a ton of perspective. And we've decided to go right back to the beginning on this one with a prototype for the Gonzo movie reviews, released on the Digital Cowboys feed in May 2010 many months before I began the Star Wars Gonzo reviews. This was originally two hour-long episodes covering both volumes of Kill Bill. We've taken them, trimmed away the bits that didn't work, added more clips and music and some additional segments with our views on the films four years on. You can hear how we were back then, what's changed and what's stayed the same. We'll be releasing regular episodes throughout 2014, interspersed with Digital Cowboys to give me room to write the book. Focus will be on more conceptual topics (much like the Fan Response show of Digital Gonzo) and while movie reviews will still remain, we'll be doing a lot more interviews and shorter, discussion podcasts, bringing on the experts so that we don't have to devote all our time studying absolutely everything. Kill Bill is in both of our top three movies lists and by the time you get to the end of this one you'll know why.
[Quiz] James Batchelor returns as GameBurst Quizmaster in a fiendish, almost malicious battle of wits between Do Try This At Home and, due to an unfortunate drop-out, members of Team GB. No, not the Olympians - Neil and Mij. Sharon Shaw and Matt Harrier represent Do Try This At Home as they show off their knowledge of latest events, video game music and general(ish) gaming trivia - plus, of course, the always-entertaining Defend the Indefensible. Buckle up and play along! www.gameburst.co.ukpod@gameburst.co.uktwitter.com/gameburstfacebook.com/gameburst
This month's topics reflect on how seriously we take our gaming, as Neil Taylor wants to know why there aren't more female heroes to choose from, David Merrett asks whether combat is simply runtime padding these days, and Sharon Shaw questions whether even the term "game" really applies any more. Talk about the show on Twitter with the many hosts using the hashtag #PraxisEffect. Contact us via email at praxiseffect@gmail.com and come to the Gonzo Planet forums where there is a Praxis Effect section. We want to hear you guys use these discussions as jumping off points for debate.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] Grab hold of a copy of the Killing Joke in book form. We're going to take you through page by page, panel by panel and discuss what it took to turn this into an audio drama and then a motion comic. Joining me I have Matt Ramsey of the Do Try This at Home podcast; AKA Commissioner Jim Gordon and Alfred Pennyworth. Matt's partner in crime Sharon Shaw who played Jeannie and Street Girl. And for the first time on Gonzo, newcomer Laureta Sela who played Barbara Gordon. We'll be talking about the complex character of The Joker as depicted here, voices, casting, music, sound FX, and the process of directing remotely. Spoilers for Batman: Breakdown throughout so listen to that (rather good) show first if you haven't already.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This time we focus on the DLC for BioShock 2, a five hour standalone narrative centering around Rapture's early computer system. The fictional technology of BioShock is woven in with real world events and people, chiefly Alan Turing and in this show we get to discuss how this is presented and what makes this a powerful, effective, personal little narrative. I would imagine everybody has played this by now, but if not it's well worth the 800 point asking price. This show is full to the brim with spoilers over the first three games so make sure you know everything you need to going in. My guests are once again Sharon Shaw of Do try This at Home, Mark Ord of Gaming ORDtopsy and we're joined by Chris Eason of GameBurst. You will also hear a snippet of Gary Blower from the GameBurst replay covering this game and more from Tony Atkins of Cane and Rinse on the multiplayer mode and Protector Trials. We do of course steer clear of Columbia for one more week, but next time we're all about BioShock Infinite, and I will as always endeavour to put out the most entertaining, deep and complex podcast covering this game.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] For time and pacing reasons I have separated out the BioShock 2 coverage. In the next show we talk Minerva's Den as well as the Protector Trials and Multiplayer mode, known to fans as Fall of Rapture. In this show we discuss the main story, to which I have re-applied the working title of Sea of Dreams. Just so we all know which one we're talking about and because frankly just shoving a '2' on the end does a disservice to the game, which in several very important ways is actually better than the original. Cease your protestations and allow us to convince you over the course of this rather emotional tale, which balances the political rhetoric of the first game with a personal, poignant story of love and loss, sacrifice and inspiration. Or on the other hand, depending on how you play it, something else entirely. This also gives us a chance to talk about it's the combat throughout the game series, something honed to perfection here. We do talk about the action in Infinite but steer clear of anything remotely resembling a spoiler to that game. Storytelling through gameplay, collectivism, parental responsibility and pressure to exceed your predecessors are all discussed. My guests are Sharon Shaw of Do Try This At Home, Mark Ord of Gonzo Planet and for the first time as a reviewing guest on Digital Gonzo, former Digital Cowboy and current co-host of Cane and Rinse, Mr Tony Atkins.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This episode focuses on the 2013 reboot of the long-established Lara Croft franchise. My guests and I go into great detail as to the strengths of this game, it's alarmingly serious tone, it's abandonment of the franchise staples of the Mary-Sueperwoman and enforced fiendish puzzling, the new narrative thrust, the frantic combat, the potential for exploration and most of all the completely transformed central character herself. We also outline clearly why it's neither an Uncharted clone nor torture porn, how it's already raising the bar on third-person action and how tricky it's going to be to write a sequel that does this initial outing justice. With me on this nightmarish trip to the island are Sharon Shaw, Matt Ramsey, David Merrett, Paul Gibson and Jerome McIntosh. All key figures in the Gonzo Planet community.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This was an interesting one to cover. I went into a round-table debate with 18 pages worth of written material (only a small portion of it actually penned by me) and the intention to integrate broadly contributed prepared content with on-the-hoof discussion. Everybody seemed to have an opinion on this movie and many of the same points were covered over and over and over again. The end result was two and a half hours of raw material. Rather than just releasing that monstrosity to the world I have carefully trimmed it down for pacing and avoided duplication. The end result is a trim 87 minutes of engaging opinion, carefully blended. Not bad for a movie I originally didn't have much to say about. Approximate Running Order 1. [Digital Gonzo 2013] This episode is all about the three-season western TV series from HBO. In case you've not had the pleasure it's a foul and filthy depiction of life in a mining camp in South Dakota 1876-1877. Absolutely every character is carefully crafted in shades of dark grey. There is grim violence, interactions of a carnal nature and such language as you've never heard. The dialogue is lyrical and Shakespearean and everything revolves around power, control and gold. Far from ending up depressing as it might sound, the few pinpricks of light, moments of innocence and surprisingly frequent levity lend the show a hopeful air and you will swiftly find yourself warming to many characters who at first may seem repellent to your delicate tastes. Ian McShane, Timothy Olyphant, Jeffrey Jones, Powers Boothe, Brian Cox, and dozens of other immensely talented actors lend their skills to the roles and by the time you hit the end of season three you will wish there were more episodes. We're focusing on characters and events from season one so if you really don't want to know anything then watch that first. Bear in mind that this is partly based on true events that are a matter of historic record. My ultimate assertion is actually that the key to Deadwood is performances and we can't really spoil those. Joining me to discuss the machinations of skulduggerous frontier folk are Gary Blower of GameBurst, Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse and Sharon Shaw of DorkCast. Next week... My Little Pony: Friendship is magic. I'm not even close to kidding, and there ain't many podcasts out there ready to tackle these two back to back.
[Digital Gonzo 2013] This episode is all about the NBC comedy Community. I was introduced to this series a few months ago on the forum by Daniel Floyd who guests on this podcast. After a slow start something clicked and it rocketed to the tippety top of my most cherished TV comedy experiences, ranking alongside the US Office and Arrested Development. I am therefore proud to present this exceptionally thorough overview show to newcomers and fans alike. The plot runs thus: slick, handsome, insincere lawyer Jeff Winger is disbarred for having a phony degree and must attend community college to get a real one. On his first day he organises a study group to get close to a girl. Despite having nothing in common with one another and clashing pretty much constantly the seven assembled students end up as unlikely friends. That may be what happens, but it doesn't adequately describe the smart, funny, inventive and touching highlights of watching this show. The mad genius and the endless quotability of the whole caboodle. So you can listen to the podcast itself for all of that. We steer clear of major spoilers pertaining to relationships and moments that are best discovered for yourself but there are two distinct sections. 1. Character study 2. Key episodes. These are presented in order so if you have only seen Season 1 you can leave off after 'Modern Warfare', which is incidentally the one episode we believe every living person on this planet should watch. By the end of seeing that one you will know if you love this. The first three seasons are available on DVD in the USA, the first two in the UK and the reputedly final season 4 has just begun showing on TV. The other two guests on this podcast are Sharon Shaw of DorkCast and Jerome McIntosh of the Gonzo Planet community.
[Digital Gonzo 2012] This one serves as an introduction to Avatar since my estimate is that 97% of you, my listeners have never had the pleasure of this, maybe the finest animated TV series in the world, and I do not use those words lightly. The Legend of Aang is a story that starts out aimed at kids aged 6-11 but rapidly becomes something far more compelling to all age groups and walks of life. Taking inspiration from eastern mythology and martial arts, but with a fresh, original and very funny energy. Set over three series, which are paced like books, this has the scale of Lord of the Rings and the heart of Toy Story. You will find yourself devouring episodes, hungry for more as it draws towards a conclusion that will leave you breathless. That series won ten major awards and ran from 2005 - 2008 but in an extremely rare instance Nickelodeon green-lit a follow-up series named The Legend of Korra which aired in 2012 and immediately met with massive success. It features gorgeous, animation that surpasses most theatrically released movies and a plot that embraces even more unexpectedly mature social themes than its predecessor. Nickelodeon was so impressed with the feedback, viewing figures and critical response that they recently ordered forty more episodes, a move that made my team here misty-eyed with joy. To put the whole thing in perspective we review in this episode the disastrous, turgid and utterly hated cinematic outing from 2010, directed by M Night Shyamalan. Using it as a foil to explain what they did so wrong with the movie that was done so right on the show. Joining me for this spoiler-free sizzle to convince you of what's been missing from your life all these years I have Daniel Floyd, Pixar animator and the voice of Extra Credits and Joshua Garrity of the Cane and Rinse podcast and The Animation Archives, presented by Gonzo Planet. Also of Gonzo Planet, my ever-patient wife Mrs Sharon Shaw, anime and comic book fanatic Mr Jerome McIntosh and for one of his very first Gonzo shows, Mr Duane Griffiths. [Digital Gonzo 2012] The board is set, the pieces are moving and the final battle for Middle-earth begins. In this episode we discuss the thankless task of expertly performing Denathor, Arwen's ultimate decision and some of the shakier moments in the trilogy. This final film was the product of an insane amount of high pressure, respite-free work for Weta and it is testament to their brilliance that this still became the box-office triumph of the series. By far the most emotionally draining of all the podcasts in this series and maybe the most complicated editing process for a film podcast that I've undertaken. There were several occasions where I fell apart and had to pick myself up again here. The most epic battle of all time concludes and the ring-bearer reaches Mount Doom. I can only hope that myself and my team did these films an iota of the true depth of discussion they deserve. With me at the end of all things are Sharon Shaw of DorkCast, Chris Eason of GameBurst and Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet. This is the last of the Lord of the Rings movie reviews but not the final podcast. We still have an Unexpected Journey to discuss as a new trilogy begins, followed soon after by a sound of Gonzo episode devoted to the wonderful scores by Howard Shore. Guests: Sharon Shaw of School of Movies Chris Eason of GameBurst Paul Gibson of Gonzo Planet

[Digital Gonzo 2012] A lengthy discussion about Tolkein's books as a precursor to our movie discussions. In 2001 Peter Jackson, along with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Richard Taylor, Tania Rodger, everybody at Weta Workshop and an astonishingly dedicated and talented cast and crew brought us the first of three (later to be six) movies covering the events in Middle Earth as told in the books of J.R.R Tolkien. These films had a profound effect on my life. They inspired me, transported me and made me sad that I couldn't be part of that production team. Everything I have done since then has been part of an ongoing effort to create something even one iota as special. Now the second trilogy is mere weeks away from starting and it's time to celebrate with some truly epic podcasts. So we come to it at last, the Gonzo journey into these incredibly significant collaborative projects, masquerading as mere movies. In this episode we look at how this story has been told through other media. This is a specialised show and might be a bit heavy-going for some. So I've time-coded the different sections in case anyone wants to skip to the bit they want to hear covered. 00.00: Introduction/Timeline/Tolkien 00.13: Differences between Tolkien's books and the films. 01.26: The 1977 Hobbit Movie 01.44: The 1978 Lord of the Rings Movie 02.07: The 1980 Return of the King Movie 02.18: The 1981 Radio Play 02.38: The Video Games It's an extremely long and detailed podcast and rabid fans of the book who were disappointed with the Peter Jackson films should probably steer clear. We don't pull our punches and there are some frankly hilarious moments. You will also definitely find out new and interesting things and hear music both cringe-worthy and powerful. Joining me for the long haul are Chris Eason of GameBurst and Sharon Shaw of DorkCast.
[Digital Gonzo 2012] This is the second of three shows discussing Firefly and Serenity. This episode we look at the troubled production run and the myriad decisions made that hamstrung this potentially glorious series and ensured nobody saw it, that those that did were somewhat confused and that only a few would even notice its cancellation. Those few have grown in number in the years since with more Browncoats riding in every passing month, discovering the world and the mindset of those who love it. My crew of Big Damned Heroes return. Leah Haydu and Sharon Shaw of DorkCast, Matt Ramsey of DorkCast and Dorktunes, Gary Blower of GameBurst and Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse join me on the good ship Digital Gonzo. We cover the concluding seven episodes... * Out of Gas * Arial * War Stories * Trash * The Message * Heart of Gold * Objects in Space Next week, we dive into Serenity, the film that shouldn't, by all rights have even been made, yet exists as a closer for now on our beloved Verse.
[Digital Gonzo 2012] After many months of teasing Gonzo finally covers one of the most beloved Sci Fi shows of all time. If you're one of the people that saw this when it was originally aired then please let the other six know because they will probably adore this episode. Cut off some way before its prime, this exists as a cautionary tale never to trust a Fox but also as a wistful glimpse of what might have been one of the (empirically speaking) best TV shows of all time. Fourteen episodes, broadcast completely out of order with the beginning at the end and three left unaired, followed up by a cinematic outing that made one bag of popcorn less than its budget, Firefly is the perennial underdog. Perhaps this is why Browncoats, the die hard fans have one thing in common; the passionate, romantic inability to look facts in the face and accept defeat. On the show; six Browncoats. Leah Haydu and Sharon Shaw of DorkCast, Matt Ramsey of DorkCast and Dorktunes, Gary Blower of GameBurst and Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse. I of course stride around barking out orders in my tight pants, all gussied up with airs and graces as captain of this particular boat. On this episode we focus on the nine characters of the crew of Serenity and cover the following seven episodes... * The Pilot * The Train Job * Bushwacked * Shindig * Safe * Our Mrs Reynolds * Jaynestown Next week, the concluding seven along with a focus on the troubled production and the legacy that this has left for those who will never quit believing that you can't stop the signal.

[Digital Gonzo 2012] This is a two part epic investigation into the making of Batman: Breakdown. There's so much detail, so many hidden references and so much forethought behind the writing and production that this ended up needing two shows to contain it. I am joined by Daniel Floyd of Extra Credits who played Robin, Neil Taylor of KDS 2.0 who played Nightwing and Sharon Shaw of Gonzo Planet who played Doctor Jennifer Whitman. There is also an extensive discussion between myself and story editor David Hartrick of the wildly popular football website In Bed with Maradona. Between us we deconstruct the many complex, continuity-accurate and psychologically sound aspects of this dramatic, emotional, disturbing story of The Dark Knight. I've spent a long time layering in audio to give context to the dialogue and make this an entertaining, enlightening document of what might be the best single piece of work I've ever put out there. Also outtakes. Those are great too. In the second half we deconstruct the story elements and discuss how said elements were constructed to make this feel like a real part of the Batman story. Discussed here are the later scenes and the climax. At the very end there is a special treat in the shape of EPIC OUTTAKES. As well as this the tantalizing prospect of further installments to this new continuity. Once again a huge thank you to everyone involved in making this, Sassy, Tara, Matt Ramsey and Matt Whetter, James and Leah, David Hartrick on Story and my guests Sharon, Neil and Dan.
Sharon tells this story of her transition from child to adult... to adult lesbian. From November 2011, where the theme was 'Transitions.' Next Monday (5th Dec) we're celebrating our fourth birthday at the Canal Cafe, with stories of 'New Beginnings'. Not bad eh? As usual, we'll be raising cash for charity: this year we're supporting NOVA, a great team who train the long-term unemployed in North Kensington. [Digital Gonzo 2012] Director of two of the Resident Evil movies and producer of the rest, Paul WS Anderson helmed the first PG-13 foray for these licenses, combining them into one family-friendly Jurassic Park-style romp. If you've not seen it the plot could be adequately described on the back of a matchbox or indeed with crude, crayon diagrams. Humans go somewhere they shouldn't, looking for stuff. They find ALIENS and then PREDATORs show up. The humans go squish and the creatures fight. It's a right palava. Josh Garrity of Cane and Rinse, Leah Haydu of GamerDork, Sharon Shaw of Gonzo Planet, James Perkins of Geek Wad and Matt Ramsey of DorkTunes are now joined by Neil Taylor of GameBurst as I bring this intrepid group of explorers closer to the ignoble end of one franchise that only ever needed to be two movies and another that maybe didn't even need that many. Find out what happened thousands of years ago, hear the deep-sea sequel idea conceived and marvel at the inappropriate attempted vocal characterization of the PREDATORS. Guests: Sharon Shaw of School of Movies Leah Haydu of Some Other Castle Joshua Garrity of Cane and Rinse Matt Ramsey of GamerDork James Perkins of The Digital Fix Neil Taylor of TheKiddDogg

The lack of gore in the Paul WS Anderson original caused the pendulum to swing back violently, the result being that this film is ONLY about the blood and guts. Its dingy, nasty, grotty, witless, artless garbage, unfit for the term “film” and the seven assembled reviewers get their critical teeth in with savage acuity. The PREDATOR series fared better after this as the 2010 film PREDATORS was deliberately set apart from these crossovers and pitched itself as a follow-up to the 1987 original. As the spiritual equivalent of Cameron's ALIENS it gave hope for continuation of that series. With Scott's plans for the PROMETHEUS story skewing further away from the Alien franchise it could be a while before we see them emerge, dripping from the shadows once again.
