Julie Hoffman's wealthy mother, Kate Sawyer, might be the victim of an elaborate con or might be losing her mind. Kate says her new husband, Charlie, confessed to a notorious unsolved crime; Charlie says she imagined it; the FBI says Charlie couldn't have committed the murders. Julie doesn't know where the truth lies—but when she digs deeper into the past all sorts of cracks emerge, both in her mother's life and in her own. Over the past year and half, I've had numerous conversations about the risks we describe in Gradual Disempowerment. (The shortest useful summary of the core argument is: To the extent human civilization is human-aligned, most of the reason for the alignment is that humans are extremely useful to various social systems like the economy, and states, or as substrate of cultural evolution. When human cognition ceases to be useful, we should expect these systems to become less aligned, leading to human disempowerment.) This post is not about repeating that argument - it might be quite helpful to read the paper first, it has more nuance and more than just the central claim - but mostly me ranting sharing some parts of the experience of working on this and discussing this. What fascinates me isn't just the substance of these conversations, but relatively consistent patterns in how people avoid engaging [...] ---Outline:(02:07) Shell Games(03:52) The Flinch(05:01) Delegating to Future AI(07:05) Local Incentives(10:08) Conclusion--- First published: February 2nd, 2025 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/a6FKqvdf6XjFpvKEb/gradual-disempowerment-shell-games-and-flinches --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

Kate's new husband, who she reunites with 50 years after they were high school sweethearts, has just confessed that he was behind the Tylenol murders — a real, unsolved series of deaths in 1982 from poison-laced Tylenol pills in the Chicago area. When Kate tries to report him, the killer convinces everyone around her that her age, 70, is deteriorating her memory. This is the beginning of Bonnie Kistler's new thriller, Shell Games. In today's episode, Kistler speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about psychological manipulation and how the idea for the book came from a dream where she was the wife in question. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

"Lots of alcoholics want to quit in principle, but only some join AA" Followup to: In Continued Defense Of Effective Altruism Freddie deBoer says effective altruism is “a shell game”: Who could argue with that! But this summary also invites perhaps the most powerful critique: who could argue with that? That is to say, this sounds like so obvious and general a project that it can hardly denote a specific philosophy or project at all. The immediate response to such a definition, if you're not particularly impressionable or invested in your status within certain obscure internet communities, should be to point out that this is an utterly banal set of goals that are shared by literally everyone who sincerely tries to act charitably . . . Every do-gooder I have ever known has thought of themselves as shining a light on problems that are neglected. So what? Generating the most human good through moral action isn't a philosophy; it's an almost tautological statement of what all humans who try to act morally do. This is why I say that effective altruism is a shell game. That which is commendable isn't particular to EA and that which is particular to EA isn't commendable. In other words, everyone agrees with doing good, so effective altruism can't be judged on that. Presumably everyone agrees with supporting charities that cure malaria or whatever, so effective altruism can't be judged on that. So you have to go to its non-widely-held beliefs to judge it, and those are things like animal suffering, existential risk, and AI. And (Freddie thinks) those beliefs are dumb. Therefore, effective altruism is bad. (as always, I've tried to sum up the argument fairly, but read the original post to make sure.) Here are some of my objections to Freddie's point (I already posted some of this as comments on his post): https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/contra-deboer-on-movement-shell-games

We learn what tools, principles, and earned wisdom Dr. Fiellin and her teams have developed over the past 13 years building serious games. From 30-page playbooks to randomized controlled trial designs for hundreds of teens, this is a must-listen for anyone interested in the use of video games for health education and behavior change at scale. In this episode you'll discover: How Lynn landed her first grant from NIH in 2009 to begin building her first games Playbl has now created games for ages 10 - 20 years old between topics ranging from health promotion, vaping and smoking awareness, and mental health awareness, to preventing opioid misuse and addiction. The importance of scientific process and study design in the development of Dr. Fiellin's games, with 12-18 months from initial design through piloting and evaluation before its ready for randomized study. How an early partnership with Shell Games enabled Lynn and her team to combine best in class game development with academic research to get these games off the ground, and led to the creation of a “Games Playbook” to align gaming and research teams on a set of common goals, outcomes, and milestones. How Lynn and Playbl think about studying impact at various time points, and the durability of those results in the adolescent population PlaySmart, Playbl's latest game for kids ages 16 to 19, that was funded by NIH's HEAL initiative and aims to address mental health and opioid misuse (see game). Playbl has long targeted K12 education settings due to the demand of parents and educators looking for these types of solutions, especially during the pandemic. Now, Playbl is exploring working with major children's hospitals to provide health education content in clinical settings as kids are sitting in waiting rooms.  Playbl has now recorded upwards of 420,000 logins for their educational games. First completed November 18, 2022.] Shell game Here's the classic shell game: Youtube Screenshot from that video. The little ball is a phantom: when you look for it under a specific shell, it's not there, it's under a different shell. (This might be where the name "shell company" comes from: the business dealings are definitely somewhere, just not in this company you're looking at.) Perpetual motion machines Related: Perpetual motion beliefs Bhāskara's wheel is a proposed perpetual-motion machine from the Middle Ages: Here's another version: From this video. Someone could try arguing that this really is a perpetual motion machine: Q: How do the bars get lifted up? What does the work to lift them? A: By the bars on the other side pulling down. Q: How does the wheel keep turning? How do the bars pull more on their way down than on their way up? A: Because they're extended further from the center on the downward-moving side than on the upward-moving side, so they apply more torque to the wheel. Q: How do the bars extend further on the way down? A: Because the momentum of the wheel carries them into the vertical bar, flipping them over. Q: But when that happens, energy is expended to lift up the little weights; that energy comes out of the kinetic energy of the wheel. A: Ok, you're right, but that's not necessary to the design. All we need is that the torque on the downward side is greater than the torque on the upward side, so instead of flipping the weights up, we could tweak the mechanism to just shift them outward, straight to the side. That doesn't take any energy because it's just going straight sideways, from a resting position to another resting position. Q: Yeah... you can shift them sideways with nearly zero work... but that means the weights are attached to the wheel at a pivot, right? So they'll just fall back and won't provide more torque. A: They don't pivot, you fix them in place so they provide more torque. Q: Ok, but then when do you push the weights back inward? A: At the bottom. Q: When the weight is at the bottom? But then the slider isn't horizontal, so pushing the weight back towards the center is pushing it upward, which takes work. A: I meant, when the slider is at the bottom--when it's horizontal. Q: But if the sliders are fixed in place, by the time they're horizontal at the bottom, you've already lifted the weights back up some amount; they're strong-torquing the other way. A: At the bottom there's a guide ramp to lift the weights using normal force. Q: But the guide ramp is also torquing the wheel. And so on. The inventor can play hide the torque and hide the work. Shell games in alignment Some alignment schemes--schemes for structuring or training an AGI so that it can be transformatively useful and doesn't kill everyone--are prone to playing shell games. That is, there's some features of the scheme that don't seem to happen in a specific place; they happen somewhere other than where you're looking at the moment. Consider these questions: What sort of smarter-than-human work is supposed to be done by the AGI? When and how does it do that work--by what combination of parts across time? How does it become able to do that work? At what points does the AGI come to new understanding that it didn't have before? How does the AGI orchestrate it's thinking and actions to have large effects on the world? By what process, components, rules, or other elements? What determines the direction that the AGI's actions will push the world? Where did those determiners come from, and how exactly do they determine the direction? Where and how much do human operators have to make judgements? How much are those judgements being relied on to point to...

Just a few reminders for everyone who's just become aware of us, in order to keep these briefings from being several hours long, we can't cover everything. We're probably covering 1% of the world events when we conduct these briefings, so please remember that if we left it out, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's unimportant. Also, remember that we do these briefings quite often, so we might have covered an issue previously that you might not see if you are only watching our most recent videos. We're also doing this in our spare time, so again we fully admit that these briefings aren't even close to being perfect; we're going for a healthy blend of speed and quality. If we were to wait and only post a brief when it's "perfect" we would never post anything at all. So expect some minor errors on the slides here and there. If there is a major error or correction that needs to be made, we will post it here in the description, and verbally address it in the next briefing, whenever that is. We do not have a set schedule for when these videos are published...when we get enough info that we think is worth it, we brief it. If we were bound to a schedule we would be obligated to provide fluff for the days where there isn't anything worth commenting on. Also, thanks for reading this far. One of the more prescient authors I know is Ryan C. Hubbs, who in 2014, wrote an article for Fraud Magazine entitled “Shell Games”. Shell companies can come in different shapes and sizes. Shelf companies are those formed but not used for a long period of time. This provides the facade of appearing. Finally this type of fraud needs directors and nominees to fill out the package and provide the aura of legitimacy. The final area of concern is ‘hot spot’ or one location which is the home for multiple shell companies.  In your basic research do not limit your search to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalist’s database of companies listed in the Panama Papers themselves. Initially this database is reported to only have listed 5-7% of the world’s shell companies. Some of the basic questions you should be looking at from your own data and information such as information mis-matches around address, phone, fax, ship to, bank, cell contact.  Also consider whether incoming/outgoing wire transfer documents to determine if payments are forwared to or received from an unrelated third party. Some specific reviews and steps you can take in public source information includes the following:  Review web history. In this day and age, if a company or person does not have an active, up and running website, it should immediately raise a red flag. Review public records searches to identify owners and tracking to known associates. There is a variety of information, which a competent due diligence provider can search. Public records are an important source of information to link entities and individuals. Mapping the network. This is a key step as you must be able to document the linkage between all the information uncovered. You should map every scrap of information you uncover. ‘Whois lookup’ for domain ownership, IP addresses. Using “Whois lookup” search engines, you can discover” such information as: domain ownership, IP addresses, the physical addresses of websites, the website administrators and their contact information and finally website creation dates. Evaluating online presences. Shell incorporators have difficulty fabricating an active and robust online presence because these companies technically do not exist. Some indicia of online authenticity include a properly designed website, which has other online content. There should be periodic and regular updates of information. Finally, there should be legitimate email addresses for contacting the company which are associated with a legitimate website address. Three Key Takeaways  Do you have a mechanism to review your own vendors and agents for shell companies? Do not forget the open source tools available to you. Review your previously approved third parties in light of the Panama Papers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
