What would motivate someone to cycle 4,000 miles across America, and what stories might they uncover along the way?Episode SummaryOn this episode, I speak with travel writer Simon Parker, who recently cycled 4,000 miles across America. Simon's journey, from Seattle to Key West, was a mission — ahead of the US election in November — to understand the current social and cultural landscape of the United States by speaking with everyday people. Throughout the episode, listeners will hear about the challenges Simon faced, the incredible stories he gathered, and the unique perspectives he gained on issues like gun control, religion, freedom of speech, and food deserts. Simon shares how his passion for travel and long-distance cycling has shaped his career as a writer and journalist. He discusses how the pandemic and becoming a father have influenced his work and personal life. The conversation delves into the logistics of such a massive undertaking, including the physical and mental demands, and how cycling serves as both a method of travel and a means to connect with strangers. You'll hear compelling anecdotes from Simon's trip, illustrating the kindness of strangers and the diverse experiences of Americans. This episode provides a deep dive into the lesser-heard voices and the real-life impact of political and social issues in the US, making it a thought-provoking listen for anyone interested in travel, journalism, or American culture. This week, we're digging into the Armchair Explorer archives to bring you one of our favorite - and most ridiculous - stories. If Monty Python went on a road trip, this is what it would be. Follow along with journalist Simon Parker as he travels 2,500-miles and two weeks across the length of India … ...in a rickshaw. You read that right. The rickshaw is perhaps the least suitable vehicle on the planet for long distance travel. Used commonly across many parts of Asia, it's basically a three-wheeled moped with a roof on it and room for a couple of passengers to squash in the backseat. It has no sides. It falls over often. It's essentially a glorified lawn mower. Dreamt up by a load of nutters called The Adventurists, the Rickshaw Run is all about challenging yourself with proper adventure, whilst belly-laughing at your own ridiculousness at the same time. Simon and four of his friends traveled from the far reaches of northern India, in the shadow of the Himalayas, all the way to the steamy jungles of Kerala on the southern coast. There was no set route. No pre-planned stops or hotels. No convoy or safety car or back up of any kind. Smart phones are scoffed at; Google maps are barred. They simply set off with a pocket map of India and a vague sense of where the finish line was. What would happen in between? Nobody was certain - that was the point. The travel writer and cyclist Simon Parker first appeared on The Cycling Europe Podcast in February 2021when he talked about his ‘Earth Cycle' TV programme. He returns to discuss his latest project; an end-to-end cycle around Britain in the midst of a global pandemic. His main aim was not to clock up the kilometres but to meet the people and hear their stories. He told his own story in a weekly column for The Daily Telegraph and here he looks back upon a cycling staycation to beat most others.
Simon Parker is a Telegraph travel writer, columnist and BBC broadcaster. His show, Earth Cycle, airs on Amazon Prime worldwide. I had the honour and privilege to sit down and talk to Simon about his life and career up to the present date. Simon spoke to me about how he initially fell in love with travelling. Growing up in north Oxfordshire, he said there were no shops, no pubs, and not much to do, making him eager to get away as he got older. He didn't do much travelling during his early life apart from a few holidays with family. So once Simon had finished school, he bought a one-way ticket to New Zealand, hitchhiked the entire country, and then decided to go and do the same thing in Australia. That was the hook. Simon just knew he had to be in the travel industry after that, and he knew he would find a way. Simon told me because of his solitary adventure in New Zealand and Australia; he doesn't particularly like to follow the crowd or do activities in big organised groups, which is why he loves the idea of hiking and riding by himself or in a small group. We discussed how he broke into travel writing and journalism. We talked about journalism as it is today and where it is heading in the future. Our discussion on the speed of news breaking was fascinating. What significant factor has social media had on journalism? Was this why Simon wants to work on articles that take a long time to produce? I discussed with Simon about his television show, Earth Cycle: Northern Europe, which won Best Broadcast Programme at the Travel Media Awards for 2020. I asked him what it felt like winning the award and whether he had plans for future shows now that it has had recognition. We also discussed the issues of over-tourism. Simon suggested ways we can all help with this matter. Another topic we discussed was how fast travelling would pick up once we are out of this pandemic. Simon felt as though there would be a renaissance for international travel, which led to an interesting discussion on the continuing debate worldwide on the impact of travel on the environment. Simon does give a great viewpoint on the subject matter. Simon talked to me about his public speaking and talking to young people about what travel has done for him and what it can do for them. We again spoke about social media and the impact it has had on travel. Simon has interviewed many icons and told me about what it was like to interview tennis legend Roger Federer in 2020 for the BBC. He also spoke about what it was like to interview cricket player Ben Stokes in the press room after he scored a double century against South Arica in Cape Town back in January 2016. Talking of cricket, Simon told me about his passion for the sport. He has played cricket himself all over the world on a non-professional level. We also spoke about how he balances out his travels with his home life as he is in a relationship. Simon also talked to me about his future aspirations and his advice to people trying to break into journalism, travel and the media. It was a real delight to have Simon on the show. I could have spoken to him all day about travel. I look forward to seeing what he gets up to next. You can also watch the episode on my YouTube channel (https://youtu.be/7uO_U_SvOvA). Follow journalist Simon Parker as he takes part in the world’s craziest race: 2,500-miles and two weeks across the length of India … in a rickshaw. You read that right. Welcome to the Rickshaw Run: if Monty Python went on a road trip, this is what they’d do.The rickshaw, if you haven’t ridden one before, if perhaps the least suitable vehicle on the planet for long distance travel. Used commonly across many parts of Asia, it’s basically a three-wheeled moped with a roof on it and room for a couple of passengers to squash in the backseat. It has no sides. It falls over often. Top speed is a rip-roaring 14mph. And you will breakdown. Often. It has been described as a ‘marginally glorified lawnmower’, which is actually doing a disservice to many top of the line grasscutters. But none of that matters, because, by God, they’re fun to drive. And that’s the point. Dreamt up by a load of nutters called The Adventurists, the Rickshaw Run is all about challenging yourself with proper adventure, whilst belly-laughing at your own ridiculousness at the same time. Simon and four mates travelled from the far reaches of northern India, in the shadow of the Himalayas, all the way to the steamy jungles of Kerala on the southern coast. There is no set route. No pre-planned stops or hotels. No convoy or safety car or back up of any kind. Smart phones are scoffed at; Google maps are barred. They simply set off with a pocket map of India and a vague sense of where the finish line was. What happened in between, well, no one could be sure except that there would be chaos, there would be tears and, travelling on back roads and well off the well-beaten track, they would see a side to India that most visitors never see. It’s almost Thanksgiving here in the USA. It’s my favorite time of year, it’s better than Christmas or Halloween, or even Easter. It’s a time to reflect, a time to remind ourselves of all that we have that is good, and a chance to surround ourselves with those people we love the most. When I spoke with Becky Harris, senior player for the Southampton Women’s Football Club and current reserves player, the way she spoke about the team and how they were there for each other when the club was going through tough times, how the pushed each other to get better, and encouraged one another to get better, it just reminded me of exactly what a team should be, and who we should surround ourselves with. Becky and I spoke about a lot of things, from her family and sports growing up, to playing football, the gym, work, life, and more, but the one thing that stood out, the one thing I really took away from the time we spent on Skype, was just how special the club is. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did, amd a special thanks to Becky (@becky4h) and the club for making it happen! Also, shoutout to @EliteFootballDC who sponsors (end employs) Becky! Full disclosure, I sponsor a coach of the team and as a result have a small advertisement with the club. This week I speak with Manager Simon Parker on Southampton Women FC, the team, their chances and more.
The thought of not having club football for one weekend seems to send most fans into a bit of fit. I’ll be honest, when that weekend comes, it does feel like something is missing. It drags on a bit, especially when you are playing well. But, that feeling of missing something, of not being able to have something you enjoy and look forward to is so much greater for an athlete who is forced to miss multiple months through injury. That helps frame just some of the conversation I had this week with Amie Barnett. Amie has been a member of Southampton Women’s for 10 years. Over that time she’s seen the club struggle and thrive. She’s worked with a number of dedicated managers and teammates, all of whom she admires and spoke highly of. The club has seen success in recent years, and we discussed that, her early career, the role football played in her life while growing up, and her plans for the future. We also discuss our collective fear of crossing the halfway line. It’s really, really scary, and we discuss why neither of us do it. There is also, this week more so than normal, some personal anecdotes from me. I usually try to cut them out, but I left more of them in here this week. Not because I think I’m important or that you desperately want to hear about them, but because they reflect the type of conversation Amie and I had. It really did feel like we were just talking, not like I was interviewing someone. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad, but I’m happy with the result and I hope you are too. Amie is on Twitter and Instagram @amie_barnett and @amiebarnett and the links to the club’s contact info is below. Thank you. Amie, for taking the time to chat. Between your family, wedding planning, training, rehab on the knee, work and everything else, you could have easily said no to this. I, and I’m sure the listeners, appreciate it very much. Full disclosure, I sponsor a coach of the team and as a result have a small advertisement with the club. If you are interested in sponsoring a player, coach, or advertising, you can visit the contact page on the website, or email the club secretary (email below). My Amie is sponsored Doswell Projects and you can find out more about them at https://doswellprojects.co.uk/. This week I am happy to bring you my conversation with Emma Pinner (@Pinneremma), a striker for the Southampton Women’s Football Club. If you have been around and listening to the podcast for a while, you will know that from time to time I get the chance to chat with the players and coaches of the Southampton Women’s Football Club. I’m fortunate to have the chance to learn about the players, their careers, their habits and goals, and it brings me great pleasure to be able to share some of those conversations with you on the podcast. If you do not already support a women’s team in the Southampton area, I encourage you to take some time on a Sunday (or midweek sometimes) and watch the girls play. They are passionate, talented, organized and a joy to support! Emma and I talked about her career, her goals for the season, her injury last year and we also took some questions from her teammates and others on Twitter. We were also interrupted about 100 times, by the dog, and my daughter, and the recorder running low on batteries and more. So, some of that makes it in there and I hope you enjoy a little of the behind the scenes that is in this conversation. Real life was happening right alongside me while I spoke to Emma. If you hate it, that’s fine. Next week will probably be back to normal. A special thank you to the Southampton Women’s Football Club, Amanda Burroughs, Simon Parker, Lee Calendar, and Emma for making this happen. It’s a pleasure and an honor to have to opportunity to work with such a fantastic organization and such amazing people. Website- https://www.southamptonwfc.co.uk/ Until next time, Matt

The Southampton Women’s Football Club has had quite a run of late. Earning promotion in successive seasons the past two years and only narrowly missing out on an undefeated season and promotion this year. The club has undergone changes in its structure and coaching staff and have come through it all brilliantly. I’ve had the enormous pleasure of being semi-involved with the club over the course of this season. I sponsored one of the coaches, I was able to interview players and coaches, and I have come to love the club just as I love Saints. The opportunity to speak with Tash Angel, a defender at the club, was amazing. She was easy to talk to, willing to answer almost every question I had, and I can genuinely say I enjoyed the entire thing, from the preparation to the interview to the editing. We were originally scheduled to speak a few months ago, in the buildup to the Hampshire FA Cup Final. However, after the team was disqualified for, according to the allegation and the Hampshire FA’s interpretation of the rule, fielding an ineligible player. The impending appeals process meant Tash and I had to delay our conversation until the matter was settled. Remnants of the conversation and discussion over the teams disqualification and subsequent appeals are on Twitter, and Tash and I do talk a bit about it during the interview. The disappointment and frustration associated with the situation are clearly visible in many people who follow the club, myself included. If you’d like to read the statement provided by the club after their unsuccessful appeal you can do so here. Tash and I discuss a number of things aside from the situation surrounding the FA Cup. We talk training and fitness, game day routines, expectations and take some questions from a few listeners. I hope you enjoy listening to the show as much as I enjoyed my conversation with Tash. If you are interested in sponsoring a player, coach, or advertising, you can visit the contact page on the website, or email the club secretary (email below). Episode 52 marks the end of the first year of the podcast. 52 weeks, 52 episodes, more than 60 guests and countless hours of audio. It’s been a fantastic experience for more than one reason. Thank you to everyone who has supported in one way or another. This wouldn’t be anything without you. For episode 52 I am away with family. This episode was recorded a few weeks ago with Simon Parker, head coach of the Southampton Women’s Football Club. We talk about Simon’s journey to being the manager, his philosophy on managing the club, the struggles associated with earning promotion in two straight season and fighting for the league lead, and we take some questions from his players (which he didn’t know was happening). I hope you enjoy the chat, and I look forward to speaking with you all again in the new year. A Special thanks to Simon Parker for giving me his time, and to the club for allowing me access to their players and coaches this season. You can follow Simon on Twitter @1swparker. We also spent a weekend at The Adult Summer Games, a crazy fun event created by a good friend of ours. Here is a video from a previous event.
