This episode of PLAY MORRICONE FOR ME explores the sordid world of 80's & 90's erotic thrillers—flippantly described as "bunny boilers" in the trades. The genre exploded into the mainstream with FATAL ATTRACTION, saw the rewriting of its musical DNA with BASIC INSTINCT, and exists today in a hibernative state, a reminder of a pre-Marvel movie pop cultural landscape for mature audiences. Jeff Beal is a prolific composer who has scored hundreds of films and series, including House of Cards (Netflix), Rome (HBO), Carnivàle (HBO), and Monk (USA Network), as well as the films Pollock and Appaloosa and numerous acclaimed documentaries. His recent project is a new symphonic score for the 1927 silent film classic Metropolis, widely regarded as one of the most influential films ever made. In addition, the five-time Emmy winner recently scored the Peacock/Universal series All Her Fault, starring Sarah Snook, creating an ever-dark and ominous backdrop to the high-tension thriller series based on the novel by Andrea Mara. In April 2026, for the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking to Jeff about both scores via Zoom from a composer's summit in Prague, where he was due to premiere his score for Metropolis, to picture conducting the Czech National Symphony Orchestra the following day. During the show, as well as hearing music from ALL HER FAULT, you will be hearing exclusive clips from METROPOLIS, which is due to be released in 2027. Today on THE ESSENTIAL SOUNDTRACKS, Erik Woods, Robert Daniels, and Randy Andrews continue their journey through the STAR TREK films and their soundtracks as they discuss the eighth movie in the series, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT. You'll hear them discuss the film in great detail, including such topics as the selection of Jonathan Frakes as director, the design of the new Enterprise E, Worf's return, the Defiant, the special effects as created by Industrial Light and Magic, the Borg Queen, and more. Also covered in great length is Jerry Goldsmith's incredible score (with help from son Joel). STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT was released on November 22, 1996. James Cromwell, Alfre Woodard, and Alice Krige join cast members from the 1987 series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION who were starring in their very first solo STAR TREK motion picture. In the film, the Borg travel back in time, intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight, reaching warp speed. The original soundtrack album was released at the time of the film's release on GNP Crescendo Records, featuring 44 minutes worth of score with two licensed songs. On April 2, 2012, GNP Crescendo Records announced a limited-edition collector's CD pressed to 10,000 copies. It features the complete score by Jerry Goldsmith with additional music by his son Joel, newly remastered by recording engineer Bruce Botnick, with an accompanying 16-page booklet including informative notes by Jeff Bond and John Takis. The album is still available to purchase at the time of this recording. NOTE - Our Patreon-only episode includes an extra segment discussing the cue "The Dish." You can listen to that version HERE. Play Morricone For Me salutes Hollywood's King of the B's on the one hundredth anniversary of his birth. Roger Corman mentored a generation of New Hollywood talent and produced, directed and/or distributed some 500 feature films in his 70-year career, including gothic horror, atomic sci-fi, b-westerns, teen delinquent melodramas, biker flicks, Depression-outlaw actioners, wry social satires, and even the occasional masterpiece. With his finger firmly on the pulse of the USA's emerging youth culture, Corman frequently thought outside the box and hired composers from the world of jazz, pop or rock and roll to score his pictures, like Fred Katz, Les Baxter, Davie Allan, Mike Bloomfield, and more. Today's program features a plethora of drive-in movie scores, vintage radio spots for Corman productions, and a few other surprises. In the latest episode of Radical Reformers, Andrew Laird meets Becca Dove, Head of the Camden Centre for Relational Practice and Transformation and Simon Parker, Executive Director of Resources at Bath and North East Somerset for a rich, reflective conversation about making relational practice the norm in public services. They explore what it really takes to embed relational ways of working across whole organisations, not just at the frontline. Drawing on their personal journeys through journalism, policy, think tanks and local government, Simon and Becca reflect on why relationships are foundational to better outcomes, stronger cultures and more sustainable public services. The conversation moves from theory to practice, with examples from Camden and B&NES, including neighbourhood working, community-led approaches, relational budgeting and partnership models that grew out of the pandemic. Becca and Simon also grapple honestly with the tensions and challenges: inspections, budgets, evidence, and how to make relational change stick beyond individual leaders. Above all, this episode makes the case that relational practice is not a “nice to have”, but a practical, intuitive and increasingly necessary response to rising demand and tightening budgets. As Becca says, “honest and compassionate relationships have to be the first priority on which everything else is built”.

A revamped All Blacks side has been tasked with maintaining an almost 72-year unbeaten legacy against Wales on Sunday morning in Cardiff. Three players —captain and lock Scott Barrett, flanker Simon Parker and Will Jordan, who shifts to the right wing— remain in the run-on side from last week's loss to England. Ardie Savea and Codie Taylor are among the players rested...along with Cam Roigard and Beauden Barrett. Newstalk ZB Rugby Commentator Elliott Smith told Mike Hosking much like the bronze medal match at the Rugby World Cup, no one really wants to play it. He says it feels more like a box ticking exercise, but they've got to get through it, come home with a win, and then face what comes over the course of the summer. The dawn of the age of European exploration in the 16th century was absurdly dangerous. Crews on the ships of Christopher Columbus, Vasco De Gama and Ferdinand Magellan often sailed blind into uncharted waters, battling hurricanes and deadly reefs. With crude navigation tools, rotting food, and disease-ridden ships, survival was never guaranteed. Crews were pushed to their limits—physically, mentally, and morally. Some were deceived into the journey, and others driven by blind hope.In this episode, Dan is joined by Simon Parker, an associate professor in Medieval and Renaissance Portuguese at the University of Oxford, to tell some of the stories of extraordinary failure and disaster in the age of discovery. His new book is called Wreckers: Disaster in the Age of DiscoveryProduced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal PatmoreSign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts.
