One of the questions at the heart of this podcast is how do we make sport a better experience for all? Can we imagine a world where no one is excluded from sport because of sexism, misogyny, racism, classism or ableism? These questions of sporting values and equality are driving the work of Dr Sheree Bekker and Professor Stephen Mumford. They are co-directors of an exciting new initiative called the feminist sport lab - a gender inclusive space for the application of feminist principles to sport which ‘imagines a sports world divided not into Sport and Women's Sport, but rather a landscape where Feminist Sport reigns'. In this episode, Sheree and Stephen talk about the feminist lab and their new book ‘Open play: the case for feminist sport' – In that book, they advocate for a feminist perspective on sport, challenging conventional wisdom on the inferiority of women's athleticism. For people with disabilities, it's the difference between being in the game and out of the game. A disability doesn't preclude you from playing and contributing, while an injury might. Eli's work focuses on the intersection of research, policy and practice to advance sport and human rights, development and social change. He's moving the needle for all people.

In recent years, there have been efforts from the NHL and all of its 32 teams to increase diversity across the league. The NHL's 2022 Diversity and Inclusion report mentioned that recent hire, Mike Grier, became the League's first Black general manager when the San Jose Sharks hired him in July. The report also showed that the league's full-time workforce is 3.7% Black, 4.2% Asian, 3.7% Hispanic, and less than 1% Indigenous. On this episode of Like Nobody's Business, we discuss how hockey can work to be more inclusive, what that inclusivity looks like, how it will impact young hockey players and the future changes to come in the sport. Bernice Carneigie, the Co-Chair of the Carnegie Initiative and Dr. Richard Norman, a postdoctoral fellow at Toronto Metropolitan University, working with the Future of Sport Lab at Ted Rogers School of Management, discuss the power of inclusivity in hockey and what makes sport transformative to the society around it.

The costs of sport -- financial, social, psychological -- are considered in this SGG youth sport episode. Main themes include: 1. Over 60% of parents will pay between $1,200 to $6,000 per year on their child's sports, with nearly 20% of parents paying close $12,000 per year (Refer to Utah State's Families in Sport Lab); 2. Parents who invest extensive time and money on youth sports commonly develop “return on investment” perspectives that endure beyond youth sport experiences; 3. Specialization in one sport often means leaving other opportunities behind; 4. What are the implications for coaches? Coaches can respond to the focused messages of club programs with research-supported counter-statements. Coaches can slow unhealthy trends in youth sport.

Travis Dorsch, PhD, is the founder of the Families in Sport Lab at Utah State University. Travis was a consensus All-American punter at Purdue University and former NFL player. Current research includes a complementary focus on: (a) the role of youth sport participation on family relationships and family interaction (i.e., sport socialization); (b) Evidence-based parent education in competitive sport, in youth, adolescent, and early adult settings; and (c) the role of internal factors (e.g., motivation) and external factors (e.g., families and social contexts) on sport, physical activity, and recreational behavior. What was your sports life like as a kid and how does that compare to what you are finding now? How have you seen youth sports change since you were a kid both from your research and observations? In your TEDx Talk from March 2018, you reference Dan Arielly’s work on motivation. Please share that snippet on how play became a job. Now that you research this, what are you finding in terms of parent engagement. What does the drive for the scholarship or to become a pro from the parents potentially do to a kid’s sports experience? What is the connection, if any, between parental involvement (more spent) and kids’ attitudes toward sports? What tips can you offer those of us seeking to engage parents to get them on board with being supportive but not sucking the fun out of sports?

The Families in Sport Lab welcomes John O'Sullivan and Stephanie White to discuss early specialization in youth sport. Along with their guests, Travis and Michael discuss how and why early specialization has become the norm, as well as some potential drawbacks of such an approach. As an alternative approach to youth sport, early sampling is discussed as a way to enhance the benefits of sport participation for youth.

This week on PTPTV, I talk youth sports with Travis Dorsch. He’s got quite the title, are you ready? Dr. Travis Dorsch: Former Professional Football Player, Assistant Professor, Founding Director of the Families in Sport Lab in the Department of Family, Consumer, and Human Development at Utah State University. Yes, I do give him a hard time about how long this title is. To summarize: he studies the impact of youth sports on families. My primary approach to this topic has been financial. And no, I don’t mean betting on Joey’s little league team. That’s why it’s great for me to talk to someone like Travis to understand the impact of youth sports beyond the bank account. If you’re a parent with a kid who’s interested in youth sports, this episode is a must-listen. Travis and I discuss the message you send to your kids by spending money on youth sports, how to know if your child is really being enriched by their sport, yelling at refs, and a lot more. Check it out. Follow Travis on Twitter or check out Families in Sport.
