Not many actors can be nice, warm, and funny at the same time. Mary Steenburgen has basically made a career out of it. The Arkansas-born actress made her film debut in the late seventies on a film called Goin' South. For that performance, Steenburgen earned a Golden Globe nomination, and she's only gotten better since. She has some great performances under her belt. She played Will Ferrell's mom in Step Brothers. She played Will Ferrell's step-mom in Elf. Melvin and Howard. Back to the Future Part III. 30 Rock. Oh, and she's even played herself on the sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm. So, it's safe to say that Mary Steenburgen is a legend. And in her latest movie, she's teaming up with three other legends: Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, and Diane Keaton. This week on Bullseye, Mary Steenburgen stops by to talk about her role in Book Club: The Next Chapter. She gets into her friendship with Jane Fonda. Plus, she reminisces on the first time she met her husband, Ted Danson.

A terrific show this week on #BTLRadioShow thanks to our special guest FREDDIE STEVENSON discussing his documentary TRIALS TO TRIUMPH, and our prerecorded exclusive interview with BILL HOLDERMAN & ERIN SIMMS talking BOOK CLUB: THE NEXT CHAPTER. Five years ago BILL HOLDERMAN and ERIN SIMMS were live on #BTLRadioShow to talk about a new feature film they co-wrote which also marked Bill's feature directorial debut. That little film was "Book Club." With big name talent – Fonda, Bergen, Keaton, and Steenburgen – leading the way, we all hoped for a hit so that a sequel might follow, but no one had any idea just how big a hit "Book Club" would become. But here we are, five years later, and I once again got to chat with Bill and Erin about the sequel BOOK CLUB: THE NEXT CHAPTER. And while we couldn't mesh schedules for them to join me on the live show this time, we did speak for this prerecorded exclusive interview about this latest "page-turner" covering everything from story to casting (especially the supporting players) and the return of these formidable women, to Italy and filming logistics, to addressing the passage of time and the pandemic in the film and dealing with shooting protocols overseas, editing, and so much more….. I think you're going to like hearing this one! Then take a listen as we are joined by a very special guest. Former NFL fullback turned motivational speaker, FREDDIE STEVENSON, is with us live to discuss his documentary based on his best-selling book, TRIALS TO TRIUMPH. And what a journey Freddie has had! Exploring not only his story but stories of others who have turned darkness into light, including Maurice Benard, Delvin Breaux, Tony Gaskins, Ryan Green, Tyrell Lyons, and Neno Torres, TRIALS TO TRIUMPH touches us all. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

This week, Aya squares off against Adam McKay and Will Ferrell's ode to man-children, STEP BROTHERS. Our dynamic duo deconstructs why a 40-year old man wearing a Yoda t-shirt isn't nearly as funny in 2020 as it was in 2008, and how this movie ended up predicting the exact type of man-baby who would go on to dominate popular culture for the next twelve years. Plus, generous discussion of just how radiant Mary Steenburgen is in a movie of men who look like absolute garbage. It's on our Mt. Rushmore of comedies. The comparisons to Dumb & Dumber. The scene-stealing mischief of John C. Reilly and Adam Scott. The Catalina Wine Mixer. Corrye's favorite sequence (not the drum scene). That unique origin story of Brennan & Dale's parents. Lots to cover.
Special guest, Maya Rodale, joins the ladies to talk about her newest novel, An Heiress to Remember, as well as two romantic comedies that feature characters “of a certain age”: Something’s Gotta Give and Book Club. From Hollywood’s treatment of older female characters, to Christian Grey, to the phenomenon of “competence porn,” this episode takes a closer look at many of the strategies Hollywood employs to cast the romantic comedy as a frivolous genre.
Delivered on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, 2019. London, England.
This week we discuss Kanye's latest escapades, Taylor Swift's battle with her former label, Mary Steenburgen acquiring songwriting superpowers, a Long Island student discovering that his English teacher had a hit song, a Justin Bieber/Selena Gomez mashup, and some music podcasts. Joyous Christmas Eve and such from the Elliseseseses as we explore Will Ferrell with his comedy phasers set on hilarious in this Next 133 Project podcast. This is a textbook example of an actor doing great work in a role that few others could even play at all. Despite some third-act problems and a miscast (and possibly disinterested) James Caan, Elf is a true Christmas classic. It’s sweet, consistently entertaining and deliciously quotable. We discuss Buddy’s superhuman talents, whether or not Walter truly is the jerk he first appears to be, and the controversy about “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”. Oh, and order up some Sparkplug Coffee and nail that 10% discount by entering “top100project” as the promo code at check-out. Thanks for another fun year, gang. See you in 2019!
The movie "Book Club" offers up a great cast of leading women, explores things we don't always see in movies, and then hampers the whole thing by tossing in a little bit of "50 Shades of Grey." The unnecessary addition seems like a silly gimmick to get folks into seats rather than being truly germane to the story.
On this week's show we're joined by author and podcaster Tee Morris, who takes us on a wild adventure. So come with us to watch HG Wells chase Jack the Ripper through history. Have You Seen..? The question to start all movie discussions. It’s the sci-fi movies of 1979: Time After Time and Alien. THRILL at audio larceny! GASP at potentially litigious statements! MARVEL at an apparent multitude of ways to pronounce “Steenburgen”! CHUCKLE at funny runs! DESPAIR at a man reaching 34 without having seen Alien! FALL ABOUT LAUGHING at his reaction! PLUS: lots of listener feedback, Tom reading aloud, a spousal pitch, and all the usual shambles!
