In our news wrap Wednesday, Boeing's 737 Max jetliner is a step closer to returning to the air after two deadly crashes that killed nearly 350 people. Our biggest story this week is about drone remote ID. Regular DU followers might recall that FAA's NPRM attracted more than 50,000 comments from concerned industry stakeholders. However, it seems that the FAA is planning to go ahead with a restrictive drone remote ID as planned. In his talk at the Commercial UAV Expo, FAA's Steve Dickson shared how FAA plans to introduce drone remote ID by the end of 2020. Our next story is about flying drones in NYC. As you might be aware, an old avigation law makes it illegal to fly drones in NYC. Because of this, building inspections are still done using the traditional method where construction workers use scaffolding to access areas at higher elevations. Needless to say this is both dangerous and costly. As per the latest update, a new study has been initiated which might make flying drones in NYC a possibility in the near future. Other topics discussed in today's show include DIY ADS-B receivers, drone search and rescue, and DJI Mavic Mini crash with a helicopter. Whether you are just getting started or looking to increase your revenue stream, our drone service providers are ready to help you achieve your most ambitious goals. The MarApr 2020 issue focuses the variety of tools and technology aviators can use to avoid and/or safely mitigate what we’ve dubbed as UMC, or Unfriendly Meteorological Conditions. Feature articles cover some of the FAA’s weather research work and programs, including more effective ways to convey cockpit weather imagery, icing avoidance, and the use of weather cameras. We also sit down with the new FAA Administrator, Steve Dickson, to discuss his take on general aviation safety.NOTE: While many of the ideas covered in the quiz are included in the presentation, to complete this course you may need to download a copy of the magazine from: https://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2020/media/MarApr2020.pdf

We invited Dan Elwell back on the podcast in his new role as Deputy Administrator of the FAA. Last time we spoke with him, Dan was taking up the mantle of Acting Administrator and had just told the InterDrone audience the FAA was “open for business.” This year, his InterDrone focused on how the FAA was supporting that business through the UAS IPP and UPP programs. Whenever there’s a changing of the guard, everyone in the industry holds their breath to see what it will mean. On the podcast, Dan addresses the recent appointment of Steve Dickson as the new Administrator of the FAA and assures the drone world he is a UAS advocate. Him and Steve are impressed by what is already being done in the space and are legitimately invested in its future.

Yesterday we saw the career of an Australian politician implode after footage of him groping strippers and making sexist and racist remarks was shown on national television. The video footage of what Steve Dickson did is deeply offensive to women, racist and far from the family values he claims to stand by. But this footage didn't come out of nowhere. Did you know there are people who are specifically hired to scour for the dirt that might just lose a politician an election campaign? Today we speak to a competitive intelligence research consultant whose job it is to find the dirt... because in the game of politics, you win or you die. This week Al Jazeera broke the story that two One Nation members, Pauline Hanson's own Chief of Staff James Ashby and Queensland leader Steve Dickson, had been busted in a sting trying to line up donations from the US's powerful gun lobby the NRA. But who are the NRA? Are they just gun toting extremists? And what do they want with our politicians? Today we talk to... to find out whether we should be concerned that the NRA are getting involved in Aussie politics. Paul gets drunk on whiskey part way through the episode. See if you can tell when... We discuss how we attempt to roll with people as we start to age and everything starts to hurt. Steve talks about how and why he got into BJJ. Steve tried not to disparage other types of martial arts...except maybe tai chi push hands. He also talks about what it was like just taking private lessons for self defense up until he got a blue belt and what it was like rolling with an actual class after that. We started to talk about some north/south control etiquette but bailed on it pretty quickly. Steve talked about the time he had to use a bit of Jiu Jitsu outside of class on a fellow band mate. Paul tries to sound smart about how music can relate to learning in Jiu Jitsu, but quickly falls on his face with it... Subscribe to us on whatever podcast app you use. The pundits are reluctant to place bets on who will win Queensland's November 25 election, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and Opposition leader Tim Nicholls both carrying a good deal of baggage. A lot of attention is focused on Pauline Hanson's One Nation, which has been polling strongly and might end up with the balance of power in the new parliament. The Adani coal mine project has been centre stage early in the campaign, with the Labor government saying it would veto any financing from the federal Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) for the venture's rail line. During two days in Brisbane Michelle Grattan spoke to Griffith University political scientist Anne Tiernan, Deputy Premier Jackie Trad, Shadow Treasurer Scott Emerson, Queensland One Nation leader Steve Dickson and The Courier Mail's national affairs editor Dennis Atkins.
On this week's show we spend over an hour building up to the main event with some classic DAAM tangents and What We Watched before fulfilling Steve Dickson's request of coming up with a DAAM All-Time Top 5 Films. Some choices may be obvious, some... not so much.
