Once again, the aviation industry is in the spotlight, but this time for all the wrong reasons. With the recent accidents and mishaps, safety management systems have become a major topic in mainstream discussions.  The problem is, those conversations often turn into a rush to judgment, throwing around blame, prematurely pointing fingers, and ignoring the most important thing - the data.  This doesn't help anyone at all.  What the industry does in the aftermath of an accident is critical. Instead of rushing to conclusions, we have to let the investigations play out and let the data come in so we know what actually happened. When we wait for data, we often discover that the system does work or we'll uncover learnings we can use to get better.  What's the right way to react to a mishap? Do we need more state sponsored safety mechanisms?  In this episode, Bob Waltz returns for an insightful conversation. Bob is now the VP of Flight Operations at Surf Air Mobility, and he shares what the aviation industry should be doing in the aftermath of recent unfortunate events.    You'll also learn: How to avoid letting a sense of complacency can creep in The value of a system safety approach  The rule every aviation safety officer must follow If AI can help the human be a better operator    Guest Bio Bob Waltz is the VP of Flight Operations at Surf Air Mobility. As an award-winning and industry-recognized executive operational leader in the aviation industry, Bob has the experience in Fortune 500 global businesses and proven performance managing operational budgets of up to $3.5B and capital expense budgets of up to $500M. He is honored to serve as the Part 119 Director of Operations and Senior Director of Flight Operations at Sun Country Airlines, responsible for the stewardship of the Pilot group and the entire Flight Operations team. Additionally, Bob consults worldwide on Safety Management Systems and serves as an industry research lead as part of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University's Boeing Center for Aviation and Aerospace Safety. As an ERAU Adjunct Professor, he leads courses in aviation safety, airline management, and emergency response at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional development levels.  For more information, head to https://www.linkedin.com/in/bob-waltz-1829a51b/.  About Your Host Craig Picken is an Executive Recruiter, writer, speaker and ICF Trained Executive Coach. He is focused on recruiting senior-level leadership, sales, and operations executives in the aviation and aerospace industry. His clients include premier OEMs, aircraft operators, leasing/financial organizations, and Maintenance/Repair/Overhaul (MRO) providers and since 2008, he has personally concluded more than 400 executive-level searches in a variety of disciplines. Craig is the ONLY industry executive recruiter who has professionally flown airplanes, sold airplanes, and successfully run a P&L in the aviation industry. His professional career started with a passion for airplanes. After eight years' experience as a decorated Naval Flight Officer – with more than 100 combat missions, 2,000 hours of flight time, and 325 aircraft carrier landings – Craig sought challenges in business aviation, where he spent more than 7 years in sales with both Gulfstream Aircraft and Bombardier Business Aircraft. Captains Log: 55254.6 It's been almost 4 months since the Romulans entered the war against the House of Toral… this marks two superpowers in the Beta Quadrant engulfed, not only in a war with each other but each their own Civil War.   The Federation has officially declared war on the House of Toral but remains uncommitted to the Romulan conflict. Fortunately, the Romulans are more open about their commitments. Admiral Mendek's forces are making progress against those of Pro-Counsul Sela. He has dispatched over a dozen ships to aid Chancellor Martok in finally routing Toral from Quo'nos. He has also appointed Commander Dareeth, a cunning if not reluctant warrior, to take command of all Romulan forces in the Klingon theater.   There is still much resistance coming from the House of Toral, but I with the combined effort of the Romulans, Martok, and Starfleet… the end is in sight.   In the meantime, I've got a new officer coming aboard… Lt CMD Gerald Moss. He'll be taking over the Flight Operations position. He's got an outstanding record and was highly recommended by Admiral Aralni. He'll manage al shuttle operations and command the Peregrine wing.   Https://linktr.ee/StudioTembo

Megan McArthur Behnken is an American oceanographer, engineer, NASA astronaut, and the last person to be hands-on with the Hubble Space Telescope via the Canadarm. Throughout her career, Megan has served as a Capsule Communicator for both the Space Shuttle and International Space Station; she has flown one Space Shuttle mission—STS-125, the final Space Shuttle mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope aboard Atlantis—and one SpaceX mission, the SpaceX Crew-2 aboard the Crew Dragon Endeavour. She has also served as the Deputy Division Chief of the NASA Astronaut Office and the Assistant Director of Flight Operations for the International Space Station. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles, and received her Ph.D. in Oceanography from UC San Diego. Megan joins me today to share her vision of the future of human spaceflight and exploration. She describes her life growing up, what sparked her interest in aviation and flight, and how the Space Shuttle Challenger accident solidified her passion for space flight at a young age. She discusses her time studying Aerospace Engineering at UCLA. She explains how knowing that someone believed in her gave her the confidence to cope with her transition from high school to university life. She describes the best part about being an astronaut and why the astronaut office values collaboration over competition. Megan also shares her thoughts on commercial space flight and underscores what young people can expect from the Artemis program.  “The astronauts we're sending to the moon, whatever their background is—whether they're test pilots or biologists—they'll do lunar geology. What's great about this job is you're always learning new things and tackling new challenges.” - Megan McArthur Behnken This week on Kathy Sullivan Explores: Megan's background, family, and life growing up Her time pursuing an undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering at UCLA My experience changing my college major from languages to STEM How joining a human-powered submarine race made Megan fall in love with the ocean The importance of doing what you love and doing your best with it Why having a combination of skills is valuable in becoming a NASA astronaut A day in the life of a NASA astronaut The culture of the NASA astronaut office and how it has evolved over the years Megan's mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope and how it's different from her SpaceX flight The “pumpkin” suit and Megan's thoughts on commercial, untrained civilian space flight Promoting science literacy to the general population Megan's forecast for the future of the space frontier Our Favorite Quotes: “At NASA, we now select for collaboration and teamwork, because you can't hire a lone wolf out by themselves to do a space station mission. You know you're in it together — it's not a solo sport.” - Megan McArthur Behnken “You have to choose the thing you love doing and do that thing as well as you can do it. If you choose something you don't love, you're not going to excel at it, and NASA is never going to choose you if you're not excelling at whatever it is you're doing.” - Megan McArthur Behnken Connect with Megan McArthur Behnken: Megan McArthur Behnken on LinkedIn Megan McArthur Behnken on Twitter Megan McArthur Behnken on Instagram Spaceship Not Required I'm Kathy Sullivan, the only person to have walked in space and gone to the deepest point in the ocean. Episode 76 – Building Next Gen CSAR: HH-60W Episode Summary: In episode 76 of the Aerospace Advantage, Building Next Gen CSAR: HH-60W, host John “Slick” Baum talks to Sikorsky team members involved with developing and producing the next generation HH-60W combat search and rescue helicopter. The Air Force operates aircraft for decades, so introducing a new type is a big deal and it involves a lot of different nuances and processes we don't always think about. Now some might ask—what's the big deal? This is just another Blackhawk variant. And while that's technically true at a big picture level, the reality is that this aircraft, its mission systems, and its performance are fundamentally different than the older types it's replacing, the HH-60Gs. In fact, it's so evolved that the Air Force competed this as a new acquisition effort and is putting the helicopter through a series of tests reserved for new types entering the operational world. This isn't just another mission. Combat search and rescue is a moral imperative.   Get the operator's perspective of the discussion with Col Russ Cook in Episode 65 - When it Matters the Most: Combat Search and Rescue. For just the second time in the history of The Alden Report, I'm very excited to welcome two guests on one episode. Emil Dobrovolschi and Octavian Pantis are co-authors of Dark Cockpit: How to Communicate, Lead, and Be in Control at All Times Like an Airline Captain, a book about becoming a better pilot for your projects, your people and even in life outside of work by using valuable principles from aviation. The combination of an experienced airline captain and a senior business consultant shows readers how to: • Bring clarity, boost morale and achieve results through communication; • Quickly win the trust of the people you work with. And keep it; • Assess your own readiness as a leader; • Always have a plan and be prepared for whatever can go wrong; • Meet the 4 requirements of a true professional; • Develop responsibility, competence and leadership in those around you; • Be resilient, handle any turbulence and help others do the same.I love the title of the book as “Dark Cockpit” is a term used in aviation for the situation when, except for the ambient and instrument lighting, no other light is on – no CAUTION lights (amber), no WARNING lights (red) and so on. In short, Dark Cockpit means everything is fine and working as planned. This book can help guide you through personal turbulent times so that you are able to obtain your Dark Cockpit.Emil Dobrovolschi is a pilot, pilot instructor and pilot examiner. He started at Tarom  – Romanian Air Transport – in 1994 and has moved through the professional ranks eventually rising to commander of the special flights for the Romanian President and other government officials. In 2001, he became a high ranking pilot instructor training pilots who would eventually go on to become captains for at least 12 airlines around the world. His vast management experience has seen him serve in different operational and corporate leadership positions including serving as Vice President and Director of Flight Operations at Tarom. As an inspiring speaker, Emil has been frequently invited to address corporate events where he inspires people to higher levels of commitment and professionalism and teaches valuable principles regarding communication, leadership, and risk management. Octavian Pantiș is an author entrepreneur and Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Qualians, an international training and consulting company which is a firm dedicated to helping organizations thrive while providing an environment where their people grow professionally, are engaged and have enough time for life outside work. As a best-selling author, he has written two books on productivity and work-life balance, as well as dozens of articles and hundreds of trainings and speeches helping to bring clarity, motivation, tools and ideas to hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life. Thank you so much to Emil and Octavian for joining us this week on The Alden Report. For more information on their Dock Cockpit book, you can visit https://darkcockpitbook.com/ Thank you to this episode's sponsor: Front Row BenefitsGetting any health insurance with optimal coverage at the right price requests an experienced agent.
