Nick Hexum is best known as the frontman of the band 311, which has now been together for over 30 years. In fact, their 1995 breakthrough release, commonly and affectionately referred to as "the Blue Album," turns 30 years old on July 11, 2025—just one day before their concert in their hometown of Omaha, NE, for 89.7 The River's 30th birthday bash. Throughout 311's career, they have released 14 studio albums, many of which reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200 charts. The band has maintained its longevity through constant touring and by building a loyal, worldwide fanbase. In the eyes of many—including myself—311 is summertime's most favorite band. In 2025, Nick is taking his creativity to another level by releasing what he describes as 25 solo songs across multiple EPs. The first two, "Waxing Nostalgic" and "Full Memories," dropped in February and April of this year. These solo releases showcase a noticeable shift toward vulnerability and transparency. The themes revolve around coming to terms with one's relationship with nostalgia while also looking ahead to the future. A strong influence in this material is Nick's role as a father, husband, and all-around family man, resulting in a refreshing honesty conveyed through well-crafted Americana music. As a long time 311 fan, I personally, have been trying to manifest this conversation for five years and am glad to have had the opportunity to express my gratitude to Nick in this episode.

Join Nick and I as we talk about the inspiration behind his series of solo EP's, the various moon phases, and how I became aware of one of them (waxing gibbous) due to my wife and I seeing a pretty moon one night and wondering what kind it was. From here we dip into Nick really looking inward over the last few years and wanting to challenge himself creatively outside of what 311 does and We discuss how barebones the songs seem to be, with the emphasis being placed more on the lyrics, but that even the songs arrangements and more so the instruments used were very intentional to help evoke the sentiments Nick is conveying. We look back on 3 decades of Nick's career, the journey it's taken him on and if the process of making music that's more immediate will maybe find it's way into creating the next 311 album and more. 311 joined host Nicole Alvarez for a special interview and performance recorded live at the Helpful Honda Sound Space at KROQ in Los Angeles giving fans a preview of what the band has in store on their upcoming Unity Tour. “You can't spell community without unity… So we keep a spirit of love and we have to be ready to communicate openly,” frontman Nick Hexum says of the group's longevity. “We're very grateful to get to do this,” he adds now approaching 34 years as a band. “We know we're very lucky. We keep an attitude of gratitude and just appreciate these wonderful fans.” Getting into the band's brand new single “You're Gonna Get It,” Hexum explains, “For my portion of the lyrics, putting myself in the mindset that we had back in like 1990… just when you're young and dumb, and feeling indestructible. For example, when we would play trashcan bowling with Chad's Buick Monte Carlo and crash into trash cans. Just stuff like that.” 311 will be touring this summer beginning on July 20 in Cincinnati, OH with AWOLNATION and Neon Trees as opening support. With a distinctive blend of alternative rock, reggae, and rap, they have left an indelible mark on the music landscape, gaining a dedicated fan base and achieving widespread acclaim for their genre-defying sound and energetic live performances. The band originated in Omaha, Nebraska, with a lineup consisting of Nick Hexum (vocals and guitar), SA Martinez (vocals and turntables), Tim Mahoney (lead guitar), P-Nut (bass), and Chad Sexton (drums). Their name, 311, is derived from the Omaha police code for indecent exposure, a reference to their early days of performing in the buff at their shows. This eccentric start set the tone for their unconventional and boundary-pushing career.311's music is often described as a fusion of rock, reggae, funk, and hip-hop, but it's not easy to pigeonhole their sound into a single genre. This diversity is one of their defining features, and it sets them apart from many other bands of their era. Their 1992 debut album, "Music," showcased this eclectic style with tracks like "Do You Right" and "My Stoney Baby," offering a taste of what was to come.In 1993, 311 released their self-titled album, which is often referred to as the "Blue Album" due to its iconic blue cover. This album featured the hit single "Down," which received extensive radio play and catapulted 311 to mainstream success. The song's catchy melody, blended with rap-infused verses, showcased the band's ability to craft songs that defied easy categorization.311's commitment to touring and engaging with their fan base played a pivotal role in their rise to fame. Their live shows are known for their high energy and sense of community, with fans often forming a tight-knit group known as the "311 Family." The band's annual summer Unity Tour, launched in 1996, has become a cherished tradition, where fans from around the world gather to celebrate the music and camaraderie. In 1995, 311 released "311: Live," a double live album that captured the band's electrifying live performances. This release further solidified their reputation as a must-see live act. Their ability to translate their studio recordings into dynamic and engaging live shows has been a cornerstone of their enduring success.311's career continued to flourish with albums like "Transistor" (1997), "Soundsystem" (1999), and "From Chaos" (2001). These albums featured hits like "Beautiful Disaster," "Come Original," and "Amber," showcasing the band's evolving sound and lyrical depth. "Amber," in particular, became one of their signature songs, celebrated for its mellow reggae vibe and heartfelt lyrics.Throughout their career, 311 has remained committed to innovation, never This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

In this exclusive interview reboot, Mark Baratto sits down with Rapper and Singer of the Dirty Heads, Jared Watson (aka Dirty J). This interview happened 30 minutes before the band went on stage for the beginning of their national tour, down here at the Key West Amphitheater. It may have been short, but for those fans out there, we touched on the bands origin story and their beginnings. More on the Dirty Heads Following in the footsteps of their California brothers Sublime, Huntington Beach's Dirty Heads mix hip-hop, reggae, and rock along with that laid-back South Cali attitude. The group formed in 2003 when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and with percussionist Jon Olazabal, an acoustic trio version of Dirty Heads began playing shows and building an audience.  They soon hooked up with producer Rob Cavallo and headed into the studio to record their debut album for Warner Bros., but differences with the label had them looking for other opportunities. Still, the band was able to retain most of its work, including sessions with drummer Josh Freese, along with the late-Beatles collaborator Billy Preston in one of the keyboardist's last recordings. The finished album, Any Port in a Storm, would arrive in 2008, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The deluxe version featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song would top Billboard's Alternative Songs chart just before the summer of 2010.  They followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This, in turn, led to an entire acoustic album in 2013 called Home: Phantoms of Summer. Dirty Heads' next album, Sound of Change, would prove to be a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 while topping the Independent and Alternative Albums charts upon its May 2014 release.  Building on their renewed success, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team, featuring the singles “Vacation” and “Staloney.” Also included on the album was the track “So Glad You Made It,” featuring 311's Nick Hexum. The single “Listen to Me” arrived in early 2019 and was later included on Dirty Heads' Dave Cobb-produced seventh album Super Moon. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Website: https://www.dirtyheads.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dirtyheads Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DirtyHeads Twitter: https://twitter.com/dirtyheads YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/DirtyHeads Spotify: https://play.spotify.com/artist/6GkJh85o22LfD2vgL9DP6f?play=true&utm_source=open.spotify.com&utm_medium=open Apple iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/dirty-heads/id287941061

Finally....Music and Entertainment Consultant and dear friend of the show, Gregg Lariosa is back....IN THE SALOOOOOOON! This episode runs the gamut from simple nonsense to the most ridiculous nonsensicals. Gregg is back at concerts and fills us in on a recent music festival. Matt discusses his #Twitter beef with Nick Hexum. There's a this vs. that, question of the day, nonsensicals and a brand new edition of real thing or thing Mike made up. In their last full length episode before the big #100, the boys bring it and swing it. Enjoy, Saloonatics! linktr.ee/MikeandMatt instagram.com/everydaynonsensepodcast

I mean, what else were we going to do for this episode? 311 didn't leave us a LOT of options, so we had to go with "Mele Kalikimaka" performed by Nick Hexum. Then, for reasons, we listened to The Offspring's cover of "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)". This episode's ranking music is "Amber" by 311! Of course!

Adam and Chad wax poetic about the dopest band to come out of their hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.  Chad reminiscences about the 1993 debut LP by Nick Hexum, P-Nut and SA Martinez, while Adam laments the more commercial direction they took in 1995.  The episode drops a day early so you can enjoy 311 Music on 420!  Finish off your leftover Peeps and chocolate bunnies and kick back and listen in style…  Omaha Stylee.< '00 | an Art House Empire Production | a proud member of the HyperX podcast Network | #LessThan2000Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/lessthan2000)
