This week's Deadpod takes us to the Fabulous Fox theater in Atlana Georgia for the boy's performance on October 29, 1985. We have an energetic first set, out of the gate with a fine 'Feel Like a Stranger', the 'Friend of the Devil' that follows is very good, Jerry is in excellent voice for this period, much better than many nights during '85. I love how Brent sounds here, personally. I quite enjoyed all of these renditions, and while this is a short first set (some say caused by technical difficulties) it is still a nice set to enjoy on a crisp Autumn afternoon.. I hope you enjoy it. Sometimes one just ends up doing a podcast that could be construed as a defense of some seemingly indefensible things, and instead of just deleting it and trying again next week, one realizes that any good faith effort to understand the world will be willfully misunderstood as indefensible by people of less than good faith, so what difference does it make? And, no, somehow this isn't even about Russell Brand. Listen, if you must! Has something we said, or failed to say, made you FEEL something? Merry Christmas! I hope that this edition of the Deadpod finds you safe and warm with those you love. I hope the music brings a smile and a memory of happier times and places.. It is my reward to think that it makes someone a little happier.. this week the second set form the Fabulous Fox in St. Louis Missouri on December 12, 1971. This one starts with a fabulous Pigpen 'Good Lovin', followed by a sweet 'Brokedown Palace'. It includes, just for Christmas, a fun 'Run Rudolph Run', and a beautiful 'Comes a Time'. For your Christmas week enjoyment.. a stunner from very late Fall, 1971.. Pig and Keith were both in fine form on this night at the Fabulous Fox.. This first set is a fine, uptempo collection highlighted, I think with the two Pig tunes, 'Mr. Charlie' and 'Next Time You See Me', as well as a great 'Loser' and 'Jack Straw'. Jerry kind of misses some of the lyrics on 'Tennesee Jed' but makes up for that with some great guitar work on that one. I'll present the second set for your enjoyment Christmas morning.. Labor Day weekend.. summer's swan song so they say with the kids going back to school .. or college.. and lots of folks getting one last weekend of warm weather activities.. well I decided to bring you a show from a fall tour.. the Fall of 1972.. had a request for one of these wonderful shows so I'm bringing you the last night of a great three night run at the Fabulous Fox theater in St. Louis, October 19th, 1972. I played the 2nd set of the night before about four years ago.. but this one is a keeper as well. We will hear set 1 this week and the amazing second set next week. As usual, this first set features a great selection of the band's catalog played smartly. These are all excellent versions, but my highlights would include the China Cat->Rider with an excellent transition, always great to hear the Dire wolf come out and the boys really amp it up with the last two songs, Around and Around and Casey Jones.. I think this is a great set to sit back and enjoy as you savor the last long weekend of summer. Fox Theatre, St. Louis, MO (10/19/72) Promised Land Tennessee Jed Jack Straw Don't Ease Me In Black Throated Wind Sugaree Mexicali Blues Bertha El Paso China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Beat it on Down the Line Dire Wolf Around and Around Casey Jones You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082914.mp3 Thank you for listening, and for your support.. In 1929, William Fox was a movie mogul and The Fox Theatre was Atlantas crown jewel of movie palaces. Over the years it has hosted many award-winning performances. Comedies, tragedies, and dramas – in the form of movies, plays and dance – have all played on the big screen and the stage, creating more than a few memories along the way. On this months episode of Sidewalk Radio, host Gene Kansas welcomes in Beauchamp Carr, the Executive Vice President of The Woodruff Arts Center and a major player in helping the Fox Theater remain an Atlanta landmark in the 1970s. Also joining in on this months conversation are Chairperson of Emory’s Film and Media Studies, Matthew Bernstein and Leo Alvarez, the Urban Design Leader at Perkins+Will. As always, this episode of Sidewalk Radio is brought to you in part by Perkins+Will.
