Larry Luxenberg shares the history behind the Appalachian Trail Museum, more information about the exhibits that are offered and how people are able to both visit and participate in supporting it's efforts. "Located in Pennsylvania's Pine Grove Furnace State Park, very close to the midpoint of the Appalachian Trail, the A.T. Museum tells the story of the A.T.The Museum is housed in a building that is itself a historical artifact, a structure built more than two hundred years ago as a grist mill. It stands across the road from the Pine Grove general store, a site famed in hiker lore. It is here that thru-hikers traditionally stop to celebrate reaching the midpoint by eating -- or attempting to eat -- a half gallon of ice cream in one sitting. The Museum has had visitors from throughout the United States and 18 other countries since it opened in Pine Grove Furnace State Park in June 2010.Nearby is the Ironmasters Mansion now operated by the Museum" (source: A.T Museum web site). Older adults often turn to institutional settings like nursing homes when they need more help than they can get at home. However, since the 1970s, there has been a program that allows older adults to receive nursing home-level care outside of nursing homes. That model of care is known as the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE. On today's podcast, we discuss PACE with two leaders in the PACE community, Dan Drake and Jay Luxenberg. Dan is the President and CEO of Trinity Health PACE, the second largest provider of PACE in the country, and Jay is the Chief Medical Officer of On Lok, the very first PACE demonstration site in the nation. We talk with Dan and Jay about all things PACE, including: What is PACE and what is included in it that makes it able to care for nursing home level care in peoples homes? How is PACE paid for, what does it need to cover, and who is eligible? How did PACE start and what's the evidence that it works? What are the challenges to PACE implementation and what do they think the future has in store for PACE? Why should you work at a PACE program?

Ṭā Hā[1] (/ˈtɑːˈhɑː/; Arabic: طه) is the 20th chapter of the Qur'an with 135 verses. It is named "Ṭā Hā" because the chapter starts with the Arabic "mysterious letters": طه (Taha) which is believed one of the names of the prophet Muhammed. Luxenberg's perspective is that the letters Ta-Ha could mean "marvel" or "be amazed!" in Aramaic[2] Regarding the timing and contextual background of the revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), it is traditionally believed to be a Meccan surah, from the second Meccan period (615-619),[3][4] which means it is believed to have been revealed in Mecca, instead of later in Medina It begins with God addressing Muhammad, then lists several of God's characteristics and praises Him. In this section, there is also a mention of the Quran as a reminder of God's existence, a theme that is seen throughout the Quran. One of the two verses in this sura mentioned in al-Wahidi's "Asbab al-Nuzul" is verse 2. According to al-Wahidi, God sent this verse to Muhammad because the Quraysh were saying that Muhammad was distressed because he left their religion, and that God only sent down the Quran to distress Muhammad 20:99–113 Judgment day and the disbelievers' punishment This section again refers to the revealed nature of the Quran, and discusses the Day of Judgment. It gives a brief description of the events that will take place on judgment day. Disbelievers will be punished, but believers need not fear. This account of judgment day is an example of the eschatological nature of the Quran, as described by Angelika Neuwirth.[6] Also in this section, in verse 113, is a specific reference to the Quran in Arabic Verse 99: "…We have given you a Qur'an from Us."[5]Verses 111–112: "Those burdened with evil deeds will despair, but whoever has done righteous deeds and believed need have no fear of injustice or deprivation."[5]Verse 113: "We have sent the Qur'an down in the Arabic tongue and given all kinds of warnings in it, so that they may beware or it may make them take heed."[5]

Steve Luxenberg presents the myth-shattering story of how our nation embraced separation and the devastating consequences of that decision. Plessy v. Ferguson, the Supreme Court case synonymous with "separate but equal," created remarkably little stir when the justices announced their nearly unanimous decision on May 18, 1896. Yet it is at the center of one of the most dramatic stories of the 19th century, and its cultural reverberations are still felt today. Wending his way through a half century of American history, Luxenberg begins at the dawn of the railroad age in the North, home to the nation's first separate railroad car, and then moves through the Civil War and Reconstruction to its aftermath: separation taking root in nearly every aspect of American life. Luxenberg draws from letters, diaries and archival collections to tell the story of Plessy v. Ferguson through the eyes of the people caught up in the case: resisters from the mixed-race community of French New Orleans, led by Louis Martinet, a lawyer and crusading newspaper editor; Homer Plessy's lawyer, Albion Tourgée, a best-selling author and the country's best-known white advocate for civil rights; Justice Henry Billings Brown, from antislavery New England, whose majority ruling endorsed separation; and Justice John Harlan, the southerner from a slaveholding family whose singular dissent cemented his reputation as a steadfast voice for justice. Luxenberg's new book, Separate: The Story of Plessy v. Ferguson, and America's Journey from Slavery to Segregation, has been long listed for the 2019 Cundill History Prize, an international award recognizing the best history writing in English. I’m a huge fan of the viral videos on social media that teach you how to cook in just a few minutes. The dishes are eye poppingly bright and I personally love trying to replicate them. I caught Matthew’s post on LinkedIn, talking about his layoff from Buzzfeed. As many know, many media companies went through a layoff round, and unfortunately, Matthew was one of them. I reached out to Matt to tell his story and we had an interview that night. I learned about the complexity of creating Tasty videos and the neat tips and tricks that go with it. But what’s even more impressive is Matthew’s culinary journey. He went to the Culinary Insitute of America and graduated with no debt and during that time, he would post a video on youtube every week for 8 years, about his culinary creations! Matt is doing amazingly well, with media deals all around Los Angeles. He’s using his skills in culinary video content creation to freelance for companies such as Viacom and MTV Cribs, and working as a private chef for Pretty Healthy Foods Inc. What’s also pretty cool is that he started to get into Podcasting and has a show called DinnerViews and it’s pretty good! You can check that out in the shownotes. So if you’re interested in culinary school, or creating professional cooking videos, this episode is for you. About Matthew Francis Matthew Francis is a chef and food video producer living in Los Angeles, CA. Since leaving BuzzFeed Tasty, Matthew Francis has taken on clients working as a private chef and hosts his own food podcast show called "DinnerViews." Matthew's culinary journey is filled with fascinating stories including losing 110 pounds after coming out, traveling across the country for cooking competitions, and earning $175,000 in scholarships to graduate from the CIA debt free. Steve Luxenberg, author of “Separate", talks about the Jim Crow era and the landmark case that stated "separate but equal" is not equal.
A 30-year writer and senior editor at The Washington Post, Steve Luxenberg has overseen reportage that has won a host of awards, including two Pulitzer Prizes for explanatory journalism. He is the author of Annie's Ghosts: A Journey in a Family Secret, the tale of his eponymous aunt who was locked away in a mental institution and seemingly erased from his mother's memory. In Separate, Luxenberg unearths the Philadelphia-born court case that established the idea of "separate but equal" in the courtroom, thus creating legal precedent for the landmark Plessy v. Ferguson case. (recorded 2/21/2019)
Awarded the 2016 J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, Luxenberg’s second book is a deeply researched account of events leading up to the infamous “separate but equal” Plessy v. Ferguson decision. Announced on May 18, 1896, the decision had a deceptively quiet reception. But as Luxenberg shows, the case went to issues at the heart of the nation’s unresolved image of itself. Focusing on the individuals involved in bringing, arguing, and deciding the case as well as on the broader separatist currents throughout the era of westward expansion and industrialization, Luxenberg, a longtime Washington Post senior editor, forces us to see both how entrenched racism has been as well as how some have always struggled to root it out. https://www.politics-prose.com/book/9780393239379Learn more about your ad choices. The Genealogy Gems Podcast with Lisa Louise Cooke - Your Family History Show
Published Nov 3, 2010 In this Genealogy Gems Podcast Episode 121 and part 2 of my interview with Washington Post editor Steve Luxenberg, author fo Annie's Ghosts. From the emails, Tweets and Facebook posts I've received from so many of you, it sure looks like you enjoyed part 1 of the interview in episode 120 as much as I enjoyed doing it. Jenna at the Seeking Surnames blog tweeted “the Annie's Ghost podcast was great! It's a close runner up to the Sha Na Na Guy as my favorite!” Jenna is referring to Dr. Robert Leonard who I interviewed in episode 89 and 90 about the topic of Forensic Linguistics. I have to agree that Dr. Leonard is one of my all time favorite guests, and Steve is certainly up there with him! And you'll remember that I introduced Part 1 by reading the email from Jay in New York. Well after listening to episode 121 Jay sent me a follow up email saying, “Awesome interview with Steve Luxenberg about his book "Annie's Ghosts". It hit the nail right on the head. Thank you!” Steve is such a riveting writer and speaker, and it's fascinating to hear how someone who is not a genealogist, but rather a journalist approached his family history search in an effort to find the answers to mysteries in his families. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed reading Annies Ghosts. This book inspired me, gave me concrete ideas for pursuing my own family history research, AND kept me on the edge of my chair.
