For our 400th episode (!!!) we're joined by musician Jonathan Hischke (Hella, Dot Hacker, E V Kain), who brought us a record that got under his skin when he first heard it in 1999 - Rob's too! - and continues to astound: The Flaming Lips' beautifully trippy kinda-masterpiece 'The Soft Bulletin'. "Will the fight for our sanity Be the fight of our lives?" Songs discussed in this episode: Race For The Prize (Feat. The Colorado Symphony & Andre De Ridder, live at Red Rocks) - The Flaming Lips; Eye Opener - Dot Hacker; Striking Out - E V Kain; Infektion - The Flying Luttenbachers; She Lives in an Airport - Guided By Voices; She Don't Use Jelly, Christmas At The Zoo - The Flaming Lips; Easter Theatre - XTC; Race For The Prize, A Spoonful Weighs A Ton, The Spark That Bled, The Spiderbite Song, Buggin', What Is The Light, The Observer, Waitin' For A Superman, Suddenly Everything Has Changed, The Gash, The Gash (Feat. The Colorado Symphony & Andre De Ridder, live at Red Rocks), Feeling Yourself Disintegrate, Sleeping On The Roof - The Flaming Lips; Waitin' For A Superman (The Flaming Lips cover) - Iron & Wine
Hey guys! We had a lot of fun this episode, chilling at the trap. For the first 12 minutes we talk about the "midwest" and how it doesn't exist, at least not in the way it's currently in. Then, Preston brings up possibly the best conspiracy theory about Elon Musk that you've ever heard. About halfway through we listen to "it's that talk again" by Broken Bells for musical intermisison. Then in the ladder half of the show we talk about Drake nonsense, Kanye nonsense, $$$4U, and the failures of the media. Enjoy!
In the week prior at Storyline's Gathering, we looked at the fourth Beatitude in Jesus's Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied." This past week, we dove deeper into that promise and explored how the things modern life tempts us with hungering and thirsting for can influence the life of faith. The band performed songs by City & Colour, Jewel, Broken Bells, and Leanna Crawford.
Yes, Dot Hacker's lead vocalist Josh Klinghoffer played guitar with Red Hot Chili Peppers for 10 years - trigger warning for some - but before forming in 2008 all four members were already established musicians, recording and touring with an impressive list of respected artists including: Beck, Gnarls Barkley, PJ Harvey, The Butthole Surfers and Broken Bells amongst many others. This week's guest, musician/audio engineer Layla Moheimani, fell instantly under the spell of the band and their lush, architectural-yet-still-rocking debut release 'Inhibition'. Songs discussed in this episode: What Red Hot Chili Peppers Sound Like To People Who Don't Like Red Hot Chili Peppers - There I Ruined It; Unreachable - John Frusciante; Billie Holiday - Warpaint; The Afterglow - John Frusciante & Josh Klinghoffer; Going On - Gnarls Barkley; Biblical Violence - Hella; Overpour - E V Kain; Order/Disorder, Idleidolidyl, Eye Opener, Discotheque, Be Leaving, The Earth Beneath, Inhibition - Dot Hacker; Mystic Lady - T-Rex; The Wit of the Staircase - Dot Hacker; Dreams of a Samurai - Red Hot Chili Peppers; Quotes, Puncture - Dot Hacker; Fade Into You (Mazzy Star cover) - Layla Joon

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”It's a nice thought... beauty is a matter of perspective. But whose perspective are we meant to value? Our own? Our families? Our peers? This past week, at the Gathering, we explored the concept of beauty and which beholder may offer the best perspective. The band shared songs by Broken Bells, Tom Odell, The Beach Boys, and Death Cab for Cutie.

Originally recorded on February 22, 2023, this live episode is TNT's second installment for Season 4 and wraps up our deep dive into the mash-up album. This month, Thanh and Tim tackle 2004's "The Grey Album" by Danger Mouse. Famously legally ambiguous at best and flat out illegal at worst, this project is the combination of the acapella raps from Jay Z's 2003 "The Black Album" mixed with the deconstructed samples from The Beatles' 1968 eponymous album AKA "The White Album." Don't worry - Hova and Paul McCartney were cool with it!
Today we will be reviewing Into the Blue by Broken Bells.
In part 1 of our two part series, we go over our favorite indie jams for 2022, with representation from all over the map picked by Danno and Kat Bass. Due to budget cuts at GFN, our indie maven couldn't join us in studio for this one, but her indelible mark is indeed left. Tunes from Lunar Isles (Korea/Scotland), TOPAZ (Chicago), Nature TV (Brighton), and so many more add the glimmer to an already killer lineup of shimmerers.TracklistPart I (00:00)Joe T. After Ezra Klein went to the NYT Vox slowly auditioned other people to fill the gap, renaming The Ezra Klein Show first to The Conversation with different hosts, of which Sean was by far and away the best, and they eventually gave him the feed and renamed it The Grey Area. I just never unsubscribed. Ezra is awesome, but I like the NYT incarnation of his show less than the old version, and I think The Grey Area is usually more interesting than EKS these days.

As broadcast September 26, 2022 with new tunes aplenty in tow. Tonight we mark a date that a very important live album was recorded at London's Palladium, which became Marvin Gaye's iconic album from 1977. We also noted some interesting facts about the only studio recording from the album "Got To Give It Up," which appeared right at the end of the live album. After that, it's huge new music all the way to the end with the exception of Yumi Zouma, who are in the spotlight for our upcoming concerts, as they do their first live on Wednesday up in Seoul at Rolling Hall. New cuts galore from Channel Tres, Alex G, The 1975, Sure Sure, and Broken Bells to dig into first hour, and then we had some big new pop tunes in part 3 with Khalid, Sam Smith, and 5SOS all out with new joints. Tonight we open with Damon Albarn and Africa Express going on a mind-bending five hour trip to close the night on this date in Denmark in 2015, with Albarn so worn by the end of the five hour set that the artist's manager needed to carry the famed Blur and Gorillaz leader off the stage at 4am.
