Some lightly baked clay cylinders from a late third millennium tomb in Syria have alphabetic markings. They've got us thinking. Does this mean -the- alphabet originated hundreds of years earlier than we thought? What is -the- alphabet anyway? Why did we think we understood any of this? Who, in fact, is lightly baked in this scenario?

Do not covet The Lord of Humanity (vv. 18-21)Fear of the dramaFear of the Divine More to Consider The Function of Human Government The general function of human government, as instituted by God, may be said to be threefold: to protect, punish, and promote. The Function of Protection: The moment Adam sinned it was obvious that civilizations would need some form of restraint and rule to protect citizens from themselves. An example of this function is seen in Acts 21:27-37 where Roman soldiers step in and save Paul from being murdered by his own enraged countrymen in Jerusalem. The Function of Punishment: Both Paul and Peter bring this out. Paul writes that duly appointed human officials are to be regarded as God's servants to "bear the sword," that is, to impose punishment upon criminals (vv. 3,4). Peter tells us that governors are "sent by him for the punishment of evildoers" (1 Pet 2:13, 14). The Function of Promotion: Human government is to promote the general welfare of the community where its laws are in effect. Paul commands us to pray for human leaders "that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty" (1 Tim 2:1,2). New King James Version Notes, Thomas Nelson, p. 1152 1 Peter 2:13, Our Responsibility to Human Government It is impossible for a believer to be a good Christian and a bad citizen at the same time. As children of God our responsibility to human government is threefold: We are to recognize and accept that the powers that be are ordained by God. "Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God." (Rom 13:1) This truth applies even to atheistic human governments unless, of course, the law is anti- scriptural. In that situation the believer must obey God rather than man (Acts 4:18-20). In fact, when Paul wrote those words in Romans 13:1, the evil emperor Nero was on the throne. See also Titus 3:1. We are to pay our taxes to human government (Matt 17:24-7; 22:21, Rom 13:7). We are to pray for the leaders in human government. "Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior" (1 Tim 2:1-3). We are to take responsibility for the right ordering of civil society without falling prey to the idea that it is within our power to build the Kingdom of God on earth. Ray White speaks to Ian Mann, MD at Gateways Business Consultants and regular book reviewer, about Saul Perlmutter's thought-provoking book "The Third Millennium Thinking", exploring its insights on innovation, strategic thinking, and navigating complex challenges in the modern world.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Saul Permutter won the Nobel Prize for his eventual role in the discovery of dark energy. In 1996 when I was lecturing at LBL he bet me that he would show dark energy didn't exist. His group had been measuring supernova distances for years, in hopes of determining the deceleration rate of the universe. Instead, after recalibrating some of his earlier data, his group and an independent group discovered the universe was actually accelerating. That is the beauty of science, it supersedes any individual prejudices, and scientists actually change their minds if the data requires it. This is one of the many important characteristics of science that Saul and his collaborators discuss in their recent book, Third Millennium Thinking. It is a good read, full of useful examples about how scientific thinking is important in the world beyond just science. Saul and I had a lively conversation about science, the scientific method, and his own experiences as a scientists. It was an enriching and enlightening discussion, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. As always, an ad-free video version of this podcast is also available to paid Critical Mass subscribers. New evidence suggests horses were domesticated over a thousand years later than previously thought, around 2200 BCE, which would mean they caught on pretty fast with wealthy Near Easterners. Still, who wouldn't love a pony? Who wouldn't love a person that had a pony? With touching childhood memories of horsemanship!
John Vitz from Angelus Music provides our "Sacred Music" segment today on Morning Light. June is the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. John wrote "A Mass for Peace in the Third Millennium" and dedicated to the Sacred Heart so we share a track from the CD. Also, a story about St. John Vianney and a song from "The Cure' of Ars" - a musical on his life.
We're live with Dr. Mark Williams, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese, David Dawson Jr., COO of Witness to Love talks about how God can help us love our spouse, even in the little things and Vivian Dudro, Editor of Ignatius Press, talks about "Carlo Acutis: Holiness for the Third Millennium".
Join a Nobel Laureate physicist, a psychologist and a philosopher for a conversation about the tools and frameworks that scientists have developed to keep from fooling themselves, to chart a course through the profusion of possibilities, to better understand the world, and to make intelligent decisions. These trust-building techniques, which the authors call Third Millennium Thinking, can be used to tackle problems both big and small. Ironically, the deluge of information over the internet has made it even harder to distinguish the revelatory from the contradictory. How do we make health decisions in the face of conflicting medical advice? Does that article on GMOs even show what the authors claim? How should we navigate our next Thanksgiving discussion with our in-laws, who follow completely different experts on climate? Based on a popular UC Berkeley course, Third Millennium Thinking offers a novel approach for making sense of the nonsense by thinking critically, making sound decisions, and solving problems—individually and collectively—using scientists' tricks of the trade. John Vitz from Angelus Music returns to Morning Light as part of our weekly "Sacred Music" segment. As Easter draws near, so does Holy Thursday and the Institution of The Holy Eucharist. John talks about The Last Supper as the first Mass as we share two songs from the CD "A Mass for Peace in the Third Millennium." The first one is "Pax Vobiscum / Agnus Dei" [CUT 20] which are 2 prayers sung together as one. The second song is "Ecce Agnus Dei" [CUT 21] and includes the reception of Holy Communion and the words said by the priest, prior to Vatican II, when we received the Sacrament.
John Vitz from Angelus Music joins Morning Light today to host our weekly "Sacred Music" segment. As Lent draws near, John talks about Sorrow for Sin and the Mercy of Christ. The first song is called RECONCILIATION. It's a spoken prayer that is enhanced by the music to express the emotions of the penitent. https://vimeo.com/907198890 The last song is from "A Mass For Peace in the Third Millennium", the KYRIE, as we ask for Jesus to have mercy on us. https://vimeo.com/200634144
In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Joe Goodwin. Joe was an evangelical seminarian, worship leader, and a Catholic convert. Since his conversion, Joe's gone on to work in campus ministry for a number of years and is currently the Executive Director of Canadian Priests for the Third Millennium, a group working to meet the needs of the next generation of priests. This week on the show, Joe tells his incredible conversion story which, remarkably, intersects with my own at several different points. Joe's story is one of deep love of his faith, of Christ, and of studying the Church Fathers in an Evangelical seminary which ultimately led to his asking deeper questions and deciding to become Catholic. Joe's an amazing guy and I hope you enjoy this conversation. It was absolutely thrilling to be able to bring it to you.For more, visit The Cordial Catholic. Ben Zeisloft, reporting for The Daily Wire, starts off his October 24th article: “The United States has less than one month's supply of diesel fuel, according to data from the Energy Information Administration.” This is the lowest level since 2008 even as, by one metric, the four-week average of distillates supplied, demand is the highest it's been since 2007 Is it just me, or does Joe Biden seem to have only a few predictable responses? Tell gas stations to artificially lower their prices, and criticize oil companies for making money right now. Ask foreign countries like Saudi Arabia and Venezuela to produce more to bring down prices, thereby proving that he understands the way supply and demand work in relation to costs. Release barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Push electric vehicles and renewable energy. If EV's and renewable are so cost-effective, then why do they need so much promotion? And why aren't we producing more of our own oil and gas here in the U.S. when we easily could be? Another thing that stood out to me about the California gubernatorial debate Lauren and I watched on Epoch TV Sunday night: Brian Dahle, the Republican candidate, is proposing lower gas taxes in California to bring down the cost of fuel at the pump. Gavin Newsom, and the moderators of that debate, challenged Dahle on how he could guarantee lowering taxes wouldn't just result in gas stations raising their prices by that much. And this is a rather rich question in light of EV tax credits leading to EV manufacturers raising their prices in 2023 by roughly the amount of the Biden administration's federal tax credits. But Dahle pointed out that neighboring states have much lower average fuel prices compared with California. And it's worth noting a report by CBS 8 San Diego on October 7, which indicates that taxes and fees in California account for $2.50 more per gallon in the Golden State. California's average is $6.39 compared with the national average of $3.89. By way of reminder, the 2020 Election was a supposed landslide for Joseph R. Biden who is said to have won 306 electoral votes to Donald J. Trump's 232. But if that's true, why does the Arizona Attorney General and Democrat candidate for governor, Katie Hobbs, threaten legal action to prevent a hand-count audit of ballots in Cochise County? To be clear, the votes would still be counted first by machine; all Cochise County Supervisors are considering is an audit of the machine count. But it's an odd look for the Democrat candidate. Speaking of, a debate moderator recently asked the Democrat governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, point-blank: “Are there any restrictions around abortions you would approve of?” And she essentially says 'No,' but in far more words, by dodging the question. Yet what's this about her daughter and granddaughter not having access to abortion? They wouldn't be here if Hochul had aborted her daughter. Isn't that something to ponder? Then there's John Fetterman, Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate, who is apparently Schrodinger's cat on the question of fracking. He said in 2018 that he absolutely does not support fracking. Then last night he said he's always supported, and he does support it, and he will stand and support it. But can he account for why he changed his mind, or the disparity between his comments four years ago and his comments now? No, he cannot. All of this brings us back again to Evangelicals & Catholics Together, and their initial statement in 1994. 'The Christian Mission in the Third Millennium' says "legitimate diversity... should not be confused with existing divisions between Christians that obscure Christ and hinder the one mission." Yet neither is Rome ready to retract, so far as I know, it's anathematizing of Protestants from five centuries ago. The trouble with all the above is that truth and goodness are seen as downstream unity. But they're not. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

This week, we're painting the picture of what life on Chicago's option trading floors was like at the CBOE...but there's a catch — we put it all on the table and needed two episodes! Today's guest came into asset management in a round-about way – trading his own money for decades before venturing into the world of other people's money…We're talking to the one and only Noel Smith @NoelConvex , Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Convex Asset Management. In this two-parter, we're talking everything from the Pets.com and the Sears option pits to singing Janis Joplin's Mercedes song to a down and out trader, to steak dinners at Gibson's and a yacht on Lake Michigan. Along the way, Noel managed to fund the founding of electronic market maker Getco and create a prop firm spanning dozens of pits with 50 traders under him. How does market making in options really work, is gamma-driven delta hedging in option flow as important as FinTwit makes it out to be, and where did the floor trading edge go? It's all here. In this week's podcast we dive into the exciting world of flat-sharing … something neither of us have done for at least 30 years. How different can it all be in the Third Millennium? Well, for a start, we didn't have the internet, where you can advertise your flat or yourself, including pictures, to see if you may be a better match than just turning up at the door with a deposit. But there's more than that. There are now all sorts of useful apps to help you function as a group of like-minded residents rather than just a bunch of people who share the rent, as well as prctical advice on how to be a better flatmate and how to get rid of someone who turns out to be a pain in the butt. There are a lot of flat-sharing websites around but we focused on flatmatefinders.com.au and flatmates.com.au, which is where we found lists of the most and least expensive flat shares in Australia. You'll find a guide to the apps here. Also in the podcast this week we look back at the effects of covid, materials shortages and terrible weather and wonder if any off-the-plan developments are nearing their sunset clause deadlines. And if so, who is more likely to tear up the contracts – the developers or the purchasers? We take a quick look at a report that says our worst-designed buildings and suburbs are driving residents out of their overheated homes and into the air-conditioned cool of shopping malls. And we ask why so many local government areas aren't meeting their new housing targets. That's all in this week's podcast. TRANSCRIPT IN FULLJimmy 00:00 Last week, we blithely advised listeners who are struggling even to find somewhere to rent, that they could houseshare. Sue 00:06 Sure. Jimmy 00:08 They need somewhere to live. So we're going to be looking at that whole house sharing thing in today's podcast. And, we're going to be talking about sunset clauses and how they can affect your decisions on buying (or not buying), off-the-plan. And, a couple of other things, that have come up in the news. I'm Jimmy Thomson; I write the Flat Chat column for the Australian Financial Review. Sue 00:32 And I'm Sue Williams and I write about property for Domain. Jimmy 00:35 And this is the Flat Chat Wrap. [MUSIC] Jimmy So, having advised our listeners (who can't afford to buy, or rent a flat on their own), to maybe consider flat-sharing, I had a bit of a look at that this weekend, to see how you would do it. I mean, it's been so long, since we've shared houses with anyone and of course, since we last did it, the internet has been invented, and stuff like that. Sue 01:14 That's right. It always used to be notes on boards, if you were at college or word-of-mouth from friends and... Jimmy 01:21 'Room to rent.' Sue 01:23 Well, they still do stick them on lampposts sometimes, don't they? But that's probably not a very efficient way of doing it. Jimmy 01:29 Probably not, although it does get you people who are already living in the area. So anyway, I went online, and I found a few things; there's a thing called Gumtree Share, or Gumtree Rent. But the two big platforms seem to be flatmates.com.au and Flatmate Finders is another one. flatmates.com.au is owned by realestate.com.au They bought it in 2016, for $25 million. Sue 02:07 Wow! Jimmy 02:08 It claims to be the most visited website; Flatmate Finder claims to have the most properties and potential renters on it. Some of the figures that they use, it's quite funny. flatmates.com.au says "we're twice as big as our nearest rivals," and then, they show you this graph, that shows that they have 90% of the market, which... So, it's different figures, but let's just say that there are two platforms that are big there. There are others, but these seem to be the biggest ones. The way they make their money is that you can list your property (or yourself, if you're looking for a flat share), for free,

Why do monarchies outcompete republics in protecting property rights, promoting peace, raising living standards, and protecting the value of money? The Fintech revolution is upon us. In a recent article for the Epoch Times (How the Fintech Revolution Could Liberate Us, March 22, 2019), Fergus Hodgson argues that decentralized government-service-providers are primed to outcompete clunky 20th-century states in the 21st century and beyond. He says that Bitcoin and the sharing economy are only the beginning of the ascent of digital governance. This is a bold claim, and it's not likely to be welcomed by the guardians of the established order. However, if history is our guide, a major change in governance cannot be stopped once structural and technological changes make it a necessity.Once known as “the Stateless Man”, Fergus draws on his own experience as a digital nomad to make the case that all jurisdictions must think ahead to the inevitable changes coming. He quotes fellow futurist-libertarian Max Borders, “Cryptocurrency and income tax cannot coexist,” and draws out the dire implications for raising revenue in the increasingly burdened welfare states of the western world. This is not to say that governments will not be able to fund any activity, but that they will need to think carefully – both about how they tax their citizens and, more importantly, the value they provide in return.Does the U.S. run the risk of becoming a Venezuela if we do not adapt to the changing tides of technology?I'm delighted to welcome Fergus back to the show of ideas this Sunday (12/8, 8-9am PACIFIC) to discuss his recent articles on everything from Airbnb and Ethereum, to competitive currencies, and the democratization of finance through crowdfunding. We explore the analogy between governments as service providers and citizens as customers, and see what's happening countries that are failing their “customers.” Finally, we will look at what makes countries like Liechtenstein and Switzerland potential models for “The State in the Third Millennium” (to borrow the title of a book by Prince Hans-Adams II – reigning monarch of Liechtenstein). When the revolution arrives, you won't want to be left behind. With the launch of a new book celebrating 800 years of the Lord Mayor's Show, The Pageantmaster presents this special lecture: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/lord-mayors-show-800-years-1215-2015For eight centuries the City of London has hosted one of the world's greatest public parades, as the newly elected Lord Mayor embarks on a procession through the heart of the City to the edge of Westminster, culminating in an oath of allegiance to the representatives of the Crown. This ancient tradition has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the London calendar, combining pageantry with carnival-esque levity in a distinctly English blend of grandeur and irreverence. To mark the 800th Lord Mayor's Show, Dominic Reid OBE, the Show's Pageantmaster, and publisher Third Millennium have brought together a host of experts to produce Lord Mayor's Show: 800 Years 1215-2015, the first comprehensive illustrated history of the Show. For this special panel event Dominic is joined by some of the contributors to the book to discuss the significance of the Show across the ages, the great traditions, paraphernalia and personalities associated with it, and the ways in which it has been represented in everything from painting and literature to film and television. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/lord-mayors-show-800-years-1215-2015Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
