Serbia has been rocked by recent, mass blockades in the streets to challenge changes to the Law of Expropriation which would allow the state to take farm lands and other private property to open space for constructing mega projects and extraction like the proposed Rio Tinto lithium and jadarite mine in the Jadar Valley. This is building off of earlier ecological protests in 2021 against the building of private mini hydroelectric power plants along rivers in Stara Planina (aka the Balkan mountain range) threatening access to and health of drinking water. These protest in December forced the 12-year ruling Right-neoliberal SNS Party to backtrack and modify plans for the Expropriation and public Referendum laws and put an undefined pause on Rio Tinto's mine. Mi pongo una domanda: che cosa è il reale?Nerina TociCurato da Davide di Maggio ed edito da Fondazione Mudima, è un progetto work in progress che comprende una selezione di fotografie realizzate tra il 2017 e il 2020 in Sicilia, principalmente tra i versanti asimmetrici dei monti Nebrodi, e che nasce da un ben precisa esigenza di definizione del reale. All'inizio del suo percorso di ricerca artistica, lo sguardo di Toci era condizionato dai sogni e dall'emotività; il punto focale della sua indagine era la sua identità e ciò che per lei rappresentava il reale. Questo volume raccoglie un intenso lavoro, che esemplifica l'evoluzione artistica della fotografa: dopo aver gradualmente eliminato la propria figura dagli scatti, Toci cerca di catturare l'identità universale attraverso l'esperienza del sensibile. L'interesse antropologico – con la costante riflessione sulla figura femminile, sul senso del luogo e del confine – e l'interrogazione sul reale spostano la funzione della fotografia da quella estetica a quella reale: la vera risposta sta non nel catturare e possedere la realtà, ma nell'accettazione della sua esistenza.La giovane fotografa albanese, originaria di Tirana, che per molti anni ha vissuto in Sicilia, si occupa di fotografia dal 2015 e riserva da sempre, nel suo lavoro, un ruolo centrale alla sua terra di adozione. Nei sui lavori sensuali e misteriosi – dei quali anche Letizia Battaglia ha sottolineato l'inquietudine e la grazia – riesce a rappresentare la sua realtà, la sua immaginazione sconfinata, che varca i confini della fotografia e ci porta in un mondo incantato dove la mente è libera di viaggiare. La chiave per capire il suo lavoro va cercata nel fatto che, applicando leggi proprie, supera la visione monoculare che la fotografia impone. Il lavoro di Nerina Toci parte dalla fotografia ma prende subito altre rotte, diventando opera d'arte. La macchina fotografica è semplicemente un mezzo che le consente di esprimere quello che per un fotografo è impossibile: uscire dalla realtà che ci circonda per addentrarsi in una sorta di Wunderkammer – una realtà personale che diventa universale – nella quale entriamo insieme a lei.Davide di Maggio, curatore del volume, dice di lei: «Il fotografo blocca un istante in eterno, lei apre quell'istante all'infinito.
