In the final years of Sennacherib's reign, the Neo-Assyrian Empire entered a strange period of peace. After decades of war, conquest, rebellion, and the destruction of Babylon, the greatest military power of the ancient Near East suddenly stopped expanding.Was Sennacherib simply more interested in building Nineveh than campaigning abroad? The Gemara in Masechet Kiddushin (31a) tells that Rav Huna son of Rav Yehoshua made a point of always keeping his head covered, and he explained that since the Shechina hovered over his head at all times, it is appropriate to cover one's head as a sign of respect. This same Rav Huna is cited elsewhere (Shabbat 118b) as saying that he was worthy of reward for ensuring never to walk four Amot (cubits) with his hair uncovered. In a different context (Shabbat 156b), the Gemara teaches that wearing a hair-covering helps engender Yir'at Shamayim (fear of Heaven) and thus prevent us from sin. It tells that a woman was warned by astrologers that her infant son would be a thief as an adult. She understood this to mean that the boy was born with a natural inclination toward theft. In an effort to avoid this outcome, she saw to it that the child's head would always remain covered, so he would be cognizant of Hashem's presence at all times and thus stay away from sin. In addition, she fervently prayed to G-d that he would be righteous. Once, the Gemara says, when this boy was still a child, he was sitting beneath somebody's palm tree learning Torah, and his head covering blew off. He looked up and saw a cluster of luscious dates. Enticed, he ate the dates, which were somebody's private property – showing how a head covering helps protect a person from the Yeser Ha'ra (evil inclination). (Thanks to his mother's efforts, though, this boy grew to become Rav Nahman Bar Yishak, one of the great Sages of the Talmud.) Similarly, the Zohar (Balak 187a) teaches that one must avoid walking more than four Amot with his head uncovered, because the Shechina hovers over his head. The Zohar adds that this concept is alluded to in the verse in Kohelet (9:8), "Ve'shemen Al Roshecha al Yehsar" – "Oil shall not be lacking upon your head." The Shechina (divine presence) is compared to fire, and Misvot are the "oil," the fuel that sustains its presence in our lives. Covering our heads brings us Yir'at Shamayim so that we remain loyal to G-d's commands. The Zohar reiterates this point later (Pinhas 245b), citing the verse, "Melo Kol Ha'aretz Kebodo" (Yeshayahu 6:3) – G-d's glory fills the entire earth. We acknowledge and give honor to His presence by wearing a head covering. The Rambam, too, in his Guide for the Perplexed (3:52), emphasizes that the great Sages always ensured to cover their heads out of respect for the divine presence. However, as we know, there are many otherwise observant Jews (especially in our community) who do not wear a Kippa all the time. They make a point of wearing a Kippa when they enter the synagogue, but not throughout the day when they go about their ordinary affairs. Is this acceptable, or are these individuals failing to fulfill a Halachic obligation? This question depends on whether we regard head-covering as a strict Halachic requirement, or as a Middat Hasidut – a recommended measure of piety. The Maharam of Rothenberg (Germany, c. 1215-1293), cited by the Orhot Haim and Kolbo, maintained that Halacha does not forbid going about bareheaded, and the Sages who ensured to have their heads covered did so as a Middat Hasidut. This is also the clear implication of the Rambam, in the passage cited earlier, where he mentions that great Rabbis made a point of covering their heads – indicating that this is a recommended measure of piety, and not a binding Halachic obligation. The Maharshal (Rav Shlomo Luria, Poland, 1510-1573) drew proof to this view from a passage in the Midrash which emphasizes how Hashem deals with us far more kindly than mortal kings deal with their subjects. Normally, the Midrash comments, when a king's messenger reads to the masses a written royal decree, everyone is expected to stand, remove their hats, and listen with fear and trepidation. But when we read the Shema in fulfillment of G-d's decree, we are not required to stand and remove our head coverings. The Midrash here clearly implies that there would be nothing wrong with baring our heads – even for the recitation of Shema. The Shebut Yaakov (Rav Yaakov Reischer, 1661-1733) refutes this proof, noting that the Midrash later observes that Hashem does not demand that we hunt wild animals to bring them as sacrifices, but rather commands that we offer as sacrifices domesticated animals, which do not need to be hunted. Clearly, this does not mean that it would be acceptable to offer wild animals as sacrifices. By the same token, we cannot necessarily deduce from the Midrash that it is acceptable to recite Shema with our heads uncovered. Maran (Rav Yosef Caro, author of the Shulhan Aruch), in Bet Yosef (91), brings the aforementioned opinion of the Maharam of Rothenberg, that covering one's head is not strictly required, indicating that he concurred with this view. Elsewhere in Bet Yosef (46), however, Maran appears to imply otherwise. In discussing the blessing recited each morning, "Oter Yisrael Be'tif'ara" ("He who crowns Israel with splendor"), Maran explains that we are "crowned" in the sense that we, unlike other nations, are required to cover our heads. Maran adds that even those who maintain that this is not strictly required, agree that it is recommended as an act of piety. Here Maran clearly sides with the opinion that head-covering constitutes an outright Halachic obligation. Regardless, the Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806) noted that in the Shulhan Aruch, Maran takes the position that covering one's head is recommended but not strictly required. In Siman 2, the Shulhan Aruch writes that "it is forbidden" to walk about "Be'koma Zekufa" – completely upright, appearing proud and overly confident. In the same sentence, the Shulhan Aruch writes that "one should not walk four Amot with his head bare." When it comes to "Koma Zekufa," the Shulhan Aruch uses the word "Assur" ("It is forbidden"), whereas regarding walking bareheaded, he writes simply that this should not be done. It would thus appear that although it is proper to wear a head-covering, this is not strictly required. However, the Taz (Rav David Ha'levi Segal, 1586-1667) writes that even assuming that head-covering was practiced in ancient times only as a Middat Hasidut, in modern times this has become a strict Halachic obligation. The Taz explains that since the Christians are accustomed to walk about bareheaded, doing so violates the prohibition of "Hukot Ha'akum" – following gentile practices. Hence, in the view of the Taz, one is required to wear a Kippa nowadays in order to avoid transgressing the Biblical prohibition of "Hukot Ha'akum." Hacham Ovadia Yosef disputes this claim. Based on the comments of the Mahari Kolon (Rav Yosef Kolon, d. 1480), Hacham Ovadia writes that one transgresses the prohibition of "Hukot Ha'akum" only if he does something with the specific intention of imitating gentile practices and resembling a non-Jew. If a person decides to leave his head uncovered in the interest of comfort, this does not violate the prohibition. Nevertheless, in a famous responsum in Yehaveh Da'at, Hacham Ovadia writes that nowadays, one is required to wear a Kippa, for a different reason – because this has become the "badge" or symbol of an observant Jewish man. By wearing a Kippa, one identifies himself as a member of the population of G-d-fearing Jews. Conversely, one who chooses not to wear a Kippa presents himself as being non-observant, thereby inviting suspicion, and for this reason, wearing a Kippa has today become an obligation. It seems, however, that this applies only in Israel, where the decision of whether or not to cover one's head is the clear marker of one's self-identification as religious or secular. Here in the United States, however, at least in some communities, this is not the case, and it is known that not all observant Jews ensure to keep their heads covered at all times. Therefore, while it is certainly preferred and advisable to wear a Kippa – and where a person fears antisemitism, he can wear a cap instead of, or over, his Kippa – one who wishes to leave his head uncovered has a basis on which to rely. (Indeed, in the school where I work, I advise the members of the basketball team to leave their Kippot off during games, because the Kippa would interfere with their playing; since the Kippa is not required as a strict obligation, it may certainly be removed for this purpose.) Nevertheless, wearing a Kippa when eating, praying, reciting Berachot and learning Torah is strictly required. Of course, one must wear a Kippa in the synagogue. In the presence of a Rabbi, it is proper to wear a Kippa in the interest of Derech Eretz (common courtesy). When a person wishes to fulfill the requirement of a Beracha by listening to its recitation by somebody else, he must wear a Kippa even though he remains silent, because he is considered as actually reciting the Beracha by listening to his fellow.

La clé de notre confiance en Dieu est la certitude de son amour pour nous. Pour grandir en Dieu et être transformés, nous devons lui faire confiance. Ses voies nous sembleront souvent incompréhensibles mais, même dans ces moments, nous pourrons nous accrocher à son amour pour nous – son amour qui n'aura jamais de fin. L'apôtre Paul était persuadé que rien ne pourrait jamais arracher les croyants à l'amour de Dieu en Christ-Jésus (voir Romains 8:38-39). Nous pouvons et devons avoir cette même assurance inébranlable de l'amour éternel de Dieu pour nous en tant qu'individus. Acceptez l'amour de Dieu pour vous et construisez l'image que vous avez de vous-même sur cet amour divin. Recevez son appréciation, sachant que vous êtes en train de devenir tout ce qu'il désire que vous soyez. Et jouissez pleinement de votre cheminement vers la maturité spirituelle – où que vous soyez. Merci, Père, pour le don de ton amour. Quoi qu'il arrive, quelles que soient les circonstances, je n'ai besoin que d'une chose : savoir que tu m'aimes et que tu as donné ton Fils unique pour mon salut. Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel;2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.14 Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.17 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. Plus d'un mois après l'attaque menée par des miliciens contre le quartier général du parc Upemba à Lusinga, en République démocratique du Congo, l'heure est à la reconstruction progressive pour les éco-gardes et le personnel civil de cette aire protégée. Les responsables du parc ont organisé un soutien psychologique sur plusieurs semaines, tant pour le personnel évacué vers Lubumbashi que pour celui resté sur place au parc. L'attaque du 3 mars a coûté la vie à sept employés du parc Upemba. Retour sur les lieux, à la rencontre de quelques-uns de ces employés. De notre correspondante à Lubumbashi, Au cabinet du psychologue, Naomie Luhembwe, une jeune employée du parc Upemba en RDC, affiche un air détendu. Mais derrière son sourire, le souvenir de l'attaque est encore vif. « C'était un mardi 3 mars, vers 5h40. Ma colocataire s'était déjà réveillée. Elle avait ouvert la porte et mis la musique. Après, j'ai entendu les premiers coups de feu. Après un moment, ils ont pris le contrôle total du camp. Il y a eu des coups de feu en rafale », se rappelle-t-elle. Cette jeune dame d'une vingtaine d'années se rappelle de tous les moments de peur, et parfois de découragement, comme si c'était hier : « J'ai eu trop peur... Je me sentais hors de moi-même. Je m'imaginais plein de choses. Et ma plus grande peur a commencé lorsque les rebelles m'avaient fait sortir de la maison. Ebenezer Kamangu est le psychologue qui les a suivis. « Dans un premier temps, nous avons reçu ceux-là qui ont été victimes de l'attaque. On les écoute. Ensuite, on procède aux évaluations. Il y en a qui, malgré tout ce qu'ils ont vu et vécu, n'étaient pas traumatisés. D'autres étaient extrêmement traumatisés et ont manifesté plusieurs troubles pour lesquels on a planifié la prise en charge », explique-t-il. Une prise en charge qui ouvre la voie vers la reconstruction, reconnaît Naomie Luhembwe : « À chaque fois que je sens la peur se réveiller en moi, je pratique les exercices que le psy m'avait recommandés. Il y a de la musique douce, des exercices de respiration. Et ça m'aide beaucoup à me sentir mieux. » Malgré les quelques progrès enregistrés par les employés, la fragilité demeure. Marie est l'infirmière au parc Upemba qui a tout organisé : « L'accompagnement psychologique est toujours en cours. On fait tout ce qui est possible pour remonter le moral des employés afin que le travail reprenne normalement. » Pour l'heure, certains agents du parc ne sont pas encore prêts à y retourner. Damaszek bywa nazywany jednym z najstarszych stale zamieszkanych miast świata. Ludzie mieszkali tu od tysięcy lat, a samo miasto pojawia się w źródłach starożytnych wcześniej niż Rzym, Londyn czy Paryż. Znajduje się na północny wschód od góry Hermon. Na wschód od Damaszku znajduje się Pustynia Syryjska, ale samo miasto znajduje się nad rzeką Barada, w starożytności nazywaną Abana. W 2 Królewskiej 5:12 znajdujemy słowa Namana Syryjczyka: “Czy rzeki damasceńskie Abana i Parpar nie są lepsze od wszystkich wód izraelskich?”. Ta rzeka tworzy oazę, która stała się początkiem tego miasta. Tędy przechodziły starożytne szlaki kupieckie.Józef Flawiusz twierdził, że Damaszek założył wnuk Sema. W Rodzaju 10:22 czytamy: “Synami Sema są: Elam, Assur, Arpachszad, Lud i Aram”. Abraham wywodził się od Arpachszada, a Syryjczycy mieli się wywodzić od Arama. W oryginale hebrajskim gdy mowa jest o Syrii używa się słowa Aram. Tak jak Etiopię nazywa się Kusz, tak właśnie Syrię w tamtych czasach określano jako Aram. Ja będę korzystał z przekładu Biblii Warszawskiej gdzie pozostawiono słowo Aram i Aramejczycy, ale w wielu Bibliach przetłumaczono to na Syrię i Syryjczyków. Aram to słowo hebrajskie, ale Grecy używali nazwy Syria. Prawdopodobnie dlatego, że był to skrót od słowa Asyria. Ja muszę powiedzieć, że mi się kiedyś myliły Syria z Asyrią.Prawdopodobnie przez Damaszek przechodził Abram. W Rodzaju 15:2 czytamy: “Wtedy Abram odpowiedział: Panie Boże, cóż mi możesz dać, gdy ja schodzę bezdzietny, a dziedzicem domu mego będzie Eliezer z Damaszku”. Słowa te wypowiada bezdzietny jeszcze wtedy Abram. Według ówczesnego zwyczaju miał po nim dziedziczyć sługa czyli wymieniony Eliezer z Damaszku. Wygląda na to, że Abraham przechodził przez Damaszek i tam dołączył do niego ten sługa. Abram znalazł się tam ponownie gdy odbijał swojego bratanka Lota. W Rodzaju 14:15 “Potem podzieliwszy swój oddział, napadł na nich w nocy ze sługami swymi, pobił ich i ścigał aż do Choby, na północ od Damaszku”. Być może skorzystał wtedy z wiedzy Eliezera, który wychował się w tych stronach.W czasach Dawida Damaszek był stolicą jednego z syryjskich królestw. W 2 Samuela 8:5 czytamy: “Gdy zaś nadciągnęli Aramejczycy damasceńscy na pomoc Hadadezerowi, królowi Soby, Dawid pobił z Aramejczyków dwadzieścia dwa tysiące wojowników”. Aramejczycy damasceńscy to Syryjczycy z Damaszku. Dawid podporządkował sobie Damaszek, ale sytuacja zmieniła się za rządów Salomona. W 1 Królewskiej 11:24 czytamy o Rezonie: “Zebrał on wokoło siebie wojowników i został wodzem bandy. Gdy Dawid ich pobił, udali się do Damaszku i tam się osiedlili, i uczynili go królem nad Damaszkiem”. Był on przeciwnikiem Izraela w czasach Salomona.Kolejny król Damaszku pojawia się w czasach dwóch królestw. Ben-Hadad miał sojusz z królem Izraela Baszą, ale król Judy Asa posłał mu srebro i złoto. W 2 Kronik 16:4 czytamy: “Ben-Hadad przychylił się do prośby króla Asy i wyprawił swoich dowódców przeciwko miastom izraelskim”. Jest to pierwszy z trzech królów o tym imieniu. Hadad to bóg burzy jak kananejski Baal. Ben jak pewnie wiecie znaczy syn. W ten sposób władcy sugerowali boskie pochodzenie lub chociaż boską opiekę.Ben-Hadad II wielokrotnie próbował podbić Izrael. Na koniec dostał się do niewoli. W 1 Królewskiej 20:34 zapisano słowa Ben-Hadada oraz Achaba, czytamy tam: “Ten zaś rzekł do niego: Miasta, które zabrał mój ojciec twojemu ojcu, zwrócę, ty zaś możesz sobie w Damaszku urządzić bazary, jak mój ojciec urządził sobie w Samarii. Ja zaś - rzekł Achab - wypuszczę cię na wolność jako mojego sprzymierzeńca. I zawarł z nim przymierze, i wypuścił go wolno”. To, że Ben-Hadad II wspomniał swojego ojca, który żył równolegle z ojcem Achaba przyjmuje się za dowód, że nie jest on tym samym królem Damaszku wspomnianym w czasach Asy, choć teoretycznie było to możliwe.Prorok przepowiedział, że Achab umrze ponieważ wypuścił Ben-Hadada II. Gdy później doszło do kolejnej bitwy właśnie łucznicy tego syryjskiego króla zabili Achaba. Później Elizeusz przebywał w Damaszku. Ben-Hadad II był chory i wysłał swego sługę aby zapytał proroka o to czy wyzdrowieje. W 2 Królewskiej 8:10 czytamy: “Elizeusz rzekł do niego: Idź i powiedz mu: Na pewno wyzdrowiejesz, chociaż Pan mi objawił, że na pewno umrze”. Niektórzy bibliści sugerują, że chodzi tutaj o grę słów. Król miał wyzdrowieć ale i tak umrzeć, ale nie z powodu choroby. Ten sługa przekazał królowi tylko pierwszą część mówiąc: “na pewno wyzdrowiejesz”.W 2 Królewskiej 8:15 czytamy: “Lecz następnego dnia wziął Chazael derkę, zamoczył ją w wodzie i narzucił ją na jego twarz tak, że umarł. Potem Chazael objął po nim władzę królewską”. Był to przykład samospełniającego się proroctwa. Wykorzystał to później Szekspir w Makbecie. Chazael miał syna, któremu też nadał imię Ben-Hadad, historycy dają mu numer III. Być może Chazael po zabiciu Ben-Hadada II ożenił się z jego córką i w ten sposób jego syn Ben-Hadad III miał w żyłach krew poprzedniej dynastii do czego nawiązuje to imię. Ale to tylko moje przypuszczenia.Chazael gnębił zarówno Izrael jak i Judę. Przypisuje mu się stellę z Tel Dan. Mowa tam o pokonaniu “domu Dawida”. Zdobył też filistyńskie miasto Gat. Jego syn Ben-Hadad III też tego próbował, ale ostatecznie został pokonany przez Izrael. W 2 Królewskiej 14:28 czytamy: “Pozostałe zaś sprawy Jeroboama i wszystko, czego dokonał, i jego potęga, z jaką prowadził wojny i jak przywrócił Izraelowi Damaszek i Chamat, które należały do Judy, opisane jest w Księdze Dziejów Królów Izraelskich”. Przez “przywrócenie Izraelowi Damaszku” należy chyba rozumieć, że to miasto płaciło Izraelowi haracz czy daninę tak jak to było w czasach Salomona.Kolejny król Damaszku jest wspomniany w czasach króla Judy Achaza. W Izajasza 7:8 czytamy: “Gdyż stolicą Aramu jest Damaszek, a głową Damaszku jest Resyn”. Ten król Damaszku Recyn (lub Resyn) wraz z Królem Izraela Pekachem postanowili pozbawić korony linię Dawida w Judzie i ustanowić królem syna Tabala (Izajasza 7:6). Achaz poprosił wtedy o pomoc Asyrię. Król asyryjski Tiglat-Pileser III zdobył Damaszek. Przybył tam do niego Achaz i skopiował jego bożki. Podobne kazał wykonać w Jerozolimie. Tak więc Damaszek upadł, ale jego religia przetrwała, przynajmniej za panowania Achaza, bo jego syn przywrócił później religię mojżeszową.Po Syryjczykach z Damaszku pozostało jednak coś ważniejszego i bardziej długotrwałego. Prawdopodobnie wiecie, że kiedyś międzynarodowym językiem była łacina czyli język Rzymian. Wcześniej była to greka koine, a jeszcze wcześniej właśnie język aramejski zapewne dialekt z Damaszku. Według niektórych językoznawców aramejskim posługiwał się również Jezus. Ślady tego odnajdujemy w samej Ewangelii - to aramejskie słowa takie jak Abba (Ojcze), Kefas (Skała - imię Piotra) czy zawołanie Talitha kum. Jezus przynajmniej raz rozmawiał z Syryjką. Miałoby to sens gdyby rozmawiali po aramejsku. Jeżeli to prawda Jezus używał by aramejskiego który był lingua franca. Jego uczniowie używali greckiego, a kolejne pokolenia chrześcijan przeszły na łacinę.Póżniej Damaszek zdobywali Babilończycy, Persowie, a na koniec Grecy. Po śmierci Aleksandra Wielkiego, Seleukos I Nikator, który rządził Syrią przeniósł stolicę do Antiochii. Damaszek stracił wtedy na ważności. Po Grekach przyszli Rzymianie w osobie Pompejusza Wielkiego. Zdobył on Damaszek, który stał się jednym z miast Dekapolu wspominanego w Ewangeliach. Np. w Marka 7:31 czytamy o Jezusie: “wyszedł z okolic Tyru, przyszedł przez Sydon nad Morze Galilejskie środkiem ziemi Dziesięciogrodzia”. Dekapol to z greckiego 10 polis czyli 10 miast, co oddano jako “Dziesięciogrodzie”. Niektórzy historycy twierdzą, że władza Heroda Wielkiego rozciągała się aż po Damaszek.Do Damaszku przybył Saul, który później zmienił imię i stał się znany jako apostoł Paweł. Clay published in 1907, identified the origin of ʾĕlîlim as the name of the Mesopotamian deity Ellil, which was the Akkadian form of the Babylonian/Sumerian god Enlil. As Derek documented in The Second Coming of Saturn, Ellil/Enlil was the equivalent of the Canaanite father-god El, and thus “the abomination of the Ammonites,” Milcom (i.e., Molech). He was also known as Assur, chief god of the Assyrians, Dagon of the Philistines, Kronos of the Greeks, Saturn of the Romans, and probably Osiris of the Egyptians, among others. We believe this entity is also Shemihazah, leader of the sons of God in Genesis 6, whose rebellion created the monstrous Nephilim, the spirits of which became demons upon their deaths in the Flood of Noah. Isaiah, then, was condemning not carved blocks of wood or stone, but the demonic spirits they represented—the “gods” of the pagans whom the kingdoms of Israel and Judah continued to worship. We'll see as we get deeper into the Book of Isaiah that the prophet understood the nature of the entities the Israelites were interacting with.
