After hearing Jim Durkin's sermon in Eureka that day, we had a lot of food for thought. We continued being busy with daily life at the ranch, but both of us had lasting impressions, because of the things that Jim had said. There were probably at least, 400 people listening to him, but we received his words as if he was speaking personally to us. He didn't even know Thomas and I, but we took to heart, his message as of a father to his children. In particular, it was when Jim said, that he believed that God was preparing our generation, to take the truth of the gospel to the ends of the earth. And then he pointed out, that God was forming ours characters, for this calling. He used the example of Paul writing to his son in the faith, Timothy. He wrote that he needs to train men, to be “able” teachers and leaders. So Thomas looked up the verse that Jim was referring to. In our King James Bibles, it said in 2 Timothy chapter 2, verse 2; “The things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” Then Jim had used the example of our men who went out tree planting, that they were learning to do hard work, that required both physical and mental stamina to be able endure. They were learning to work as a team, and also suffer the hardships that were involved. We were deeply touched, by the way Jim conveyed to us, not only Paul's teachings, but his heart towards the Lord, and his love for the church. Here are just a few of the important points that Thomas wanted us to look at. You have to picture us sitting by the oil lamp in our room at the Big House. Naomi was sleeping in her little crib and we were quietly reading through the scriptures. We had only been Christians for seven months and knew that the only way we would grow, was if we studied the scriptures ourselves. Reading the Bible every day at 11 o clock was part of the daily schedule for everyone at Living Waters. But Thomas and I, found that discussing what we were reading, helped us understand it better. And when we had questions, he would ask Tom Petersen, to explain it to him. Everything we were reading was in itself, transforming our minds, like Paul had written concerning becoming a new creation. These truths were driving away all the lies that we had accumulated from the hippie philosophies, that we once believed in. And it gave Thomas even more confidence, in writing to his mother, because she was also bound up in various false religions.
For one of those teams, the trip ended tragically. Thomas and I were at the Big House, when one of our friends came in, and said they just received terrible news. One of the trucks that was on its way back to the ranch, was in a car accident. We were in disbelief as we listened to the report. Our friend Jim Layne, and his young son, were in a truck with another man, and a woman. We were told that they swerved from the road, to avoid an oncoming car, and hit a tree. Both Jim and his son, and the other man were killed, and the woman survived with a few injuries. We were all in shock. Many of us had travelled those roads, back and forth, and couldn't imagine something so awful happening. Thomas was especially sad, because he loved, and appreciated Jim's example in the Lord. Jim and Tom Petersen had shared the gospel with him the day he arrived at the ranch. They had prayed with Thomas, and basically took us in, by inviting us to come live there with our tipi. +++ We read a few of the following scriptures about how fragile life is. In James 4, 14 we read; “You do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away. Then we read Psalm 90, 12; “So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You, a heart of wisdom.” We understood from this verse, that gaining wisdom, included the knowledge, that our days on this earth are numbered by the Lord. And then Tom pointed out to us some scriptures on suffering and pain. Psalm 34, verse 18 says that “The Lord is close to the broken hearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” We finished the evening by reminding ourselves of these verses in Isaiah 41; “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous hand. V 10 +++ So I'll say bye for now, and a big thank you, for encouraging me with this podcast project. Just a note; I will be taking next week off to visit my family. I will catch up with you again, in the following week, on Wednesday! I have enclosed in the description box, a link to a wonderful song “Thy loving kindness is better than life.” From Psalm 63 https://www.google.com/search?tbm=vid&q=The+loving+kindness+maranatha+music&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjhuZe80YX8AhUXQ_EDHZ6VDRIQ8ccDegQIHhAD&biw=1280&bih=609&dpr=1.5#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:6c872337,vid:xyJxrSnpTPw Jim Durkin on Spotify !! check it out: What is a Disciple? https://open.spotify.com/episode/6sSs2qEh2qpSfE6zRiWTYf?si=5b33334171e64908
Since Thomas, had thrown his marijuana into the bonfire, and vowed to never do drugs again, the reality of being delivered from his emotional addiction, was freeing for both of us. He knew, that the Lord had brought him out, of that horrible pit, and had set his feet on a firm foundation. He was confident, that God, would guide our footsteps from now on. The challenge we faced, was to learn how that works out practically on a daily basis. As we went about our day on the ranch we would run into other “brethren.” The typical greeting was; “Praise the Lord, or Bless God!” This wassupposed to be a reminder to each other, to give glory to God, throughout our day. But this, was not the greeting that Thomas was accustomed, to with our hippie friends. It used to be more like, hey man, or peace brother, or do you have any stash? Since he was a young boy, he had been following in his father's footsteps; as a professional musician, composer and arranger. Thomas' first instrument was the trumpet, and then he taught himself to play the guitar and piano. In the last few years, especially in West Berlin, he had been playing either trumpet or flute, with other musicians who were smoking hash for inspiration. The last band he played with before we left for California, was a free jazz group. They combined jazz influences with experimental sounds. He had imagined himself, being a full time musician, and finding his place in the San Francisco music scene. I didn't realize, how important his identity as a musician was, until he told me one day, that he thinks he should stop playing music. I loved his music and I couldn't imagine why he would want to quit. But he was aware, that it was a major issue in his life, that was going to have to change. He was still thinking about, the scriptures that Tom Petersen had read to him, a few weeks before that. We feel so blessed by this gift from God. Not only did he give us a beautiful daughter, but he opened our hearts to receive the truth. The truth about the purpose of our lives. The absolute truth! As you know, from all of my past letters, we had been seriously seeking. We had been seeking everywhere, deep and wide, to find the truth. Through yoga and drugs, and meditation, I found knowledge. Through astrology, we came quite far, as we explored those channels. With the help of auras, I have seen the complete cosmos in bright light, and how it binds our energies together. Yet at the same time, I came to the understanding, of how crazy and unimportant, all of these human works are. All of this vast amount of knowledge, had actually, led us astray and deceived us.

Our new faith was being tested. We had a brand new baby and now we needed a home. Our hearts were being changed in a deep way, especially Thomas because of his near death experience. We were still on the search for a commune where we could live with our tipi. Were we willing to find out what it means, to be changed through believing in Jesus? I knew the first day after we had prayed together, that I was different. The question was, how does a new life as a Christian, develop and grow? That day turned out to be a major turning point in his life. Here's how he told some friends in Germany about it many years ago; A few days after our baby was born, Richard and I, drove up to the Christian commune near Garberville. We followed the small road through the forest, past Whitethorn, until we found the large cross, and drove up the dirt driveway to the entrance. This time there were more people around, but we found a couple of men, inside the dome building that greeted us. They introduced themselves as Jim Layne and Tom Petersen, and said welcome to “Living Waters Ranch”.
