In this full-circle conversation, Matthew Zachary sits down with Amy Sutton, Executive Director of Crossroads4Hope, to dive deep into the evolution of cancer support and the profound legacy of organizations like the Wellness Community. From reminiscing about pre-internet cancer advocacy to envisioning a future rooted in public health and equity, this episode explores the human side of care in ways only Matthew can deliver—with wit, humor, and an unfiltered lens.Amy shares her journey from working at Rand McNally (yes, the map company) to becoming a torchbearer for cancer patients, caregivers, and survivors. They tackle everything from the challenges of sustaining local cancer support services in a digital-first world to how the healthcare system neglects the psychosocial needs of both patients and caregivers. Plus, find out why Matthew thinks we should stock up on Rand McNally maps for the apocalypse.Be sure to check out Crossroads4Hope's groundbreaking Professional Development Conference in March 2025, where Matthew will be the keynote speaker. My father was a schoolteacher, and summertime meant extended driving trips. We began at home in Chicago and drove to South Dakota and Mount Rushmore — across to Cheyenne- up to Yellowstone - down through the Rockies — and into Silverton, where we would camp for an extended time.In the months leading up to those trips, Dad would always post a large map of the United States on our refrigerator door. This map contained the grand view of the entire journey. For on it, with indelible ink, Dad would trace our path. However, he never traced it out all at once. You see, all seven of us kids would set aside money from our newspaper routes in an effort to help pay for the gasoline for the trip. So, as the funds for gas accumulated, the indelible ink indicating how far we could go extended across the map. It was always a great day when the ink made its way back to the beginning, because we knew then that we had collected enough money to pay for the entire trip.A funny thing, though: We never brought this map on the trip. The "grand view map" was too general. For the actual trip we needed a more detailed map, so we took along our Rand McNally Road Atlas, complete with all fifty states! I loved that map because it contained inset maps of large cities and all kinds of information the refrigerator map didn't have. The creation account in Genesis 1, like the map on my family's refrigerator, is the grand view in which mankind is seen as the pinnacle, but only within the context of all of creation.Chapter 2, on the other hand, is like one page of the Rand McNally map, which shows in full detail what the pinnacle (mankind) is really like.In one breath, chapter 1 spoke of the creation of man in the image of God as male and female. Now, however, beginning in2:4, the writer focuses our attention specifically on humankind. He wants us to camp here for an extended time. This is exciting, because chapter 2 deals directly with one of life's big questions: "Who are we, really?"" -David Helms, pp. 49-50Imagine you are a cartoon. You live in a 2D world--height and width. Let's say you can think like you do now. You have the same questions about life and eternity. You live in a animated world that is real. Eventually, you realize that there's order in your cartoon world. You see clues in the consistency of things, the order of things, the purposefulness of things and the beauty of things. This leads to more questions. Eventually, the cartoonist begins to reveal more to you through other characters. And at some point you realize that there is a creator of the cartoon world in which you live. In fact, the great cartoonist exists and created you on purpose for a purpose. If you found yourself in this situation, how would you respond? How would you feel about the great cartoonist? Would you be grateful that he created you when he didn't to? Or would you complain about he color of your costume? Would you be in awe that there exists a being so powerful that at the stroke of a pen, he could create life? Or would you complain about the story plot of your life? My hope is that as we listen to God through His Story in Genesis, we will wrestle with these questions in 3D+. Because this is like the world in which we live. There's a creator and he is God. His name is Jesus and he created you on purpose for a purpose. My hope is that you will come to understand and believe this to the degree that it moves you to gratitude and worship. Not just when we sing a song but 24//7. That it will shape the way that you live and the choices that you make and the narratives you choose to believe and the people you hang out with. Let's look at Genesis and ask ourselves 2 questions as we do:God, what are you saying to me today?God, what do you want me to do about what you're saying to me today?CONTEXTGenesis (beginning) is a book of beginnings. It's primeval history (universal world history) of the world (universe) made up of 5 stories with the same structure. (1-11)The FallCainSons of God marrying daughters of manThe FloodTower of BabelThey all follow this 4-fold pattern:Sin: the sin is describedSpeech: There is a speech by God announcing the penalty for the sinGrace: God brings grace to the situation to ease the misery due to sinPunishment: God punishes the sinPatriarchal history (12-50) or the history of Israel's founding fathers. It continues to reveal the many graces of God based on the gracious promise God made to and through Abraham in Genesis 12:3."Genesis is about grace." Sin, then grace. Sin, then grace.Grace is often times defined as an acronymGod's RichesAtChrist'sExpenseGrace is undeserved favor.Genesis is also about God's fidelity. God is faithful even when we're not. God keeps his promises even when the people the promises are for threaten the fulfillment of the promises."If we are faithless, he remains faithful--for he cannot deny himself." 2 Timothy 2:13People are wonderful and awful. The bulk of Genesis affirms our terrible sinfulness. Therefore, salvation had to come by faith (we certainly didn't deserve it or could earn it)Genesis 15:6 Moses writes, "Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness.""There's only one way fallen humanity can be saved--the Genesis way--by faith. There has never been another way." -HughesWho wrote Genesis? According the Old and New Testaments, Moses c. 15th century BC. Jesus confirms this.Kind of cool: Genesis 1:1 is 7 words. 1:2 is 14 words. And the chapter ends with 3 verses of 7 Hebrew words (21 words).SERMON I. Primeval history (1-11)--God and the worldA. God and the beginningBereshith Elohim Bara is the Hebrew for this phrase, "In the beginning God...""In the beginning" of our universe - Hebrew bereshith God was there in the beginning before time and space existed. The beginning of universal history. He has always existed. He never began or was born.He will always exist. He lives forever.Elohim = God or gods; not plural for number here but intensity i.e. Most God you can getGenesis, the OT, and the Bible are all about God, his creation and his glory. The Bible assumes God's existence. Never debates it. Says the fool believes there is no God in Proverbs. It's one thing to doubt or question whether he exists or notIt's another to ignore the many evidences of his existence and conclude he doesn't exist; too much evidence from natureB. God and the universe (1:1): "God created the heavens and the earth.""God created the heavens..."Heavens = skiesHeaven 1: as we think about itSpaceOur sky as we think about itEarth = land (they would have understood it as the ground)We see from the rest of the chapter that God spoke things into existence. God created out of love for us and his sonUs - we now existHim - he now has a bride (not that he needed one)God created from nothing - Hebrew bara; this reminds me of an old joke:An atheist scientist came to God and said, “We've figured out how to make a man without you.” God said, “OK, let me see you do it.” So the atheist bent down to the ground and scooped up a handful. But God stopped him and said, “Oh, no you don't. Get your own dirt!”Primary or absolute creation is from nothing (what only God can do)Secondary or relative creation is from something (what we can do)God or Elohim (gods in Hebrew) is plural as a literary device to intensify the word. This isn't just a god. This is the God of gods. God is the point of the Bible. God is pre-existent. He existed before our universe did because he's eternal and uncreated. Before time and space, there was God.God is powerful. He created out of nothing.God is personal. He personally spoke creation into existence. He personally walked in the garden with Adam.C. God and the earth (1:2): "Now the earth (land) was formless (wild) and empty (waste), darkness was over the surface of the deep (abyss = chaotic darkness), and the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) was hovering (overshadowing) over the waters."The world starts out as a dark, chaotic, wild wasteland without form. God will form it, frame it, fill it and then finish it. Here he begins to form it through his Spirit. The triune God is at work here.Have you ever been at sea, miles out, at night? Maybe on a cruise ship or a deep sea fishing trip so far out that you can't see any lights or land? It's creepy and a little scary. God creates/works as a triune GodFather--Genesis 1:1; 26Son--John 1:1-2; Gen 1:26Holy Spirit--Genesis 1:2; 26The Spirit working chaos to order is seen when the Holy Spirit "overshadows" Mary making her pregnant with Jesus in the virgin birth (new creation). The Holy Spirit comes down like a dove onto Jesus at his baptism in the waters (symbolizing chaos and judgment). The Spirit raises Jesus from the dead, bringing him back to life. (Bethencourt) This is the first of many examples of the Holy Spirit doing this kind of work.II. Patriarchal history (12-50)--God and Abraham's familyCONCLUSIONBottom line: The universe begins with God speaking it into existence from nothing.God deserves our worship. Therefore, we should worship him with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. God creates out of love. Love creates and connects relationally.God wants us to worship him with our lips and our lives. (Hebrews 13:15-16)Invitation““Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”” Acts 2:36-39 NIVBottom line: What is God saying to me right now? What am I going to do about it? Write this down on a sheet of paper. What I hear you saying, Lord, is ___________________.[my name] is going to believe/do __________________________________________________ as a result. Finally, share this with your Home or Mission group this week when you gather as a testimony about what God is doing in your life. You don't have to get too specific to give him praise.PrayNOTESTruths to noteGod existed and exists eternallyGod exists in plural unity as the Holy TrinityGod was in the beginningGod was before anything existed in our universe and the universe itselfGod created everything that exists in the universe and the universe itselfGod creates something from nothing Latin ex nihiloAn atheist scientist came to God and said, “We've figured out how to make a man without you.” God said, “OK, let me see you do it.” So the atheist bent down to the ground and scooped up a handful. But God stopped him and said, “Oh, no you don't. Get your own dirt!”God creates with words. He spoke creation into existence. His words still have power.God creates purposefully for his glory and our good.God starts with light to display his creation and provide an essential ingredient for life.God only creates things that are good. Together it was all very good and will be again.God is a God of order and moves from chaos to order. Elohim (gods) intensifies God's divine majesty, when used as a noun. When used as a verb, it's singular for there is only one true God.God created all things. "Heavens and earth"God created an "open" universe, not a "closed" one where he never interactsNotes from Bible Project Videos1-11 God and the world12:3 Hinge verse12-50 God and Abraham's familyDisorder --> OrderAdam = humanHumanity created to:Reflect God's character (image)Represent God's rule (reign)Harness creation's potential and create beauty and order"Blessing" is a key word hereChoice: Tree of knowledge of good and evilTrust God's definition of good and evil, orSeize autonomy and define good and evil for themselves?Serpent (against God) tells a different story. He lies when he tells them that if they eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that they will be like God. Because they already are like God (made in his image).Heavens and earth aka skies and landFormless and empty aka wild and wasteDeep abyss = dark, chaotic oceanDays 1-3 God splits apart and forms this disordered waste into 3 ordered realms:Realm: Time. God splits darkness and light on Day 1.Realm: Sky & Seas. God splits the waters into water canopy or clouds (or both) and sea on Day 2.Realm: Land. God brings land out of water and includes vegetation on it on Day 3.Days 4-6 God Day 4 brings lights--sun, moon and stars to reflect his light in space.Day 5 brings creations to fill the sky and seaDay 6 brings land animals and humanity to fill the land. First poem in the Bible (1:27) celebrates God's creation where he completed the skies, land and inhabitants. God completes and rests and dwells in this sacred space he treats as a temple. The world or at least the garden of Eden is his temple.Notes from Bethencourt

Having turn by turn directions on our phones is an amazing blessing - no more pulling out the Rand McNally map in the middle of traffic to figure out where you are! But, have you ever had the experience of following the turn by turn directions and thinking, “I'm not really sure where I am?” In Matthew 7:13-23, Jesus address the importance of knowing what path we are on and where we are heading. There is an easy way, simply following the turn by turn directions of those around us, but that way he says leads to destruction. There is another way, the way of Jesus! His way is harder, but leads to life.

Please visit breakerwhiskey.com for more information or to send a message to Whiskey's radio. Breaker Whiskey is an Atypical Artists production created by Lauren Shippen. If you'd like to support the show, please visit patreon.com/breakerwhiskey. -------- [TRANSCRIPT] [click, static] Breaker, breaker, this is Whiskey driving West on a beautiful day. Still in Ohio. The Buckeye State. I'm thinking of heading South actually–the last time I was in the Midwest was…god, probably sixty? Sixty-one. I just remember a lot of flat. I haven't hit that yet, but knowing it's coming…yeah, anyway, I've been thinking about heading south. Cutting back over into…(rustling of paper), 77? And going down to West Virginia. I blew right past Akron without seeing a single sign of life, so I'm thinking maybe the big cities are out. [click, static] Jesus, not that Akron, Ohio is a big city. Maybe I should've gone up to Cleveland, I don't know. I guess I'm still a little skittish of anywhere that might have– [click, static] (sighing) Anyway, West Virginia seems like a place worth checking out. Harry mentioned this doomsday cult she'd heard about down there–granted, that was back in ‘66 or something that she heard those rumors but…what else do I have to go on, huh? Man, if she could see me right now, she'd laugh and tell me ‘told you so'. Not even a week into this and I'm already going looking for a weird survivalist cult. Bet she'd love to have me go slinking back with my tail between my legs, giving up on any hope that there's something worth looking for in this godforsaken country. But she's not gonna get the satisfaction. I'm not going back, not for anything. It was safe, sure, but at what cost? Human beings aren't meant to live in a cage, even ones of their own making. I mean it's just— [click, static] Well, even a bunch of nuclear war freakouts would be better than being alone. I've been alone for so long now. [click, static] Harry would take issue with that, I think. Try to logic me into some kind of admission that because I wasn't actually alone, I couldn't claim being lonely. And maybe I wouldn't've been if every conversation with her wasn't exactly like that, where she would– [click, static] (deep breath) I'm not gonna talk about her. I'm not even gonna think about her. I've spent the past six years doing nothing but– [click, static] If I'm gonna head south I should probably figure out where the hell I can get on I-77. I'm working off a Rand McNally from 1963, but it's not like they've done any public works since ‘68 so I'm counting on it being somewhat reliable. But if you hear this and have a hot tip on the best route to take… This is Whiskey, signing off.
Bearable Bible Passages (Learning about Bears in the Bible...?) - Grounded Ep. 23 Where did Steve come up with the idea for this episode? It probably won't make sense to you until part way, but give it a chance! We hope that today's episode will both be intriguing and also challenging to your understanding of the Bible, God, and yes, bears. Begin Show Notes: Bears in the Bible Why? B/c just read through 2 Kings, and in chapter 2 - story about Elisah, a roaming mob of insulting young men, and two mauling bears. And it's that biblical account that I really want to get to, but there are some other very interesting accounts in the Bible about bears, so we're going to start in some other places first. Actually, start - 2 Bear stories. One personal, and one in the news. *Personal… Kids, tent… *Another (many). Great smokies, female black bear (up to 300 lbs, 5'7” - the male 900) was grabbing food off picnic tables (Yogi and BooBoo), raiding trash cans, and even stealing backpacks. Relocate. Tranquilized, enclosed truck, relocated 1k miles, 4 states away. Georgia. Attached a geolocating device. What happened? That bear started walking. across Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina and then into Tennessee— returned to the campsite where it had been trapped. Never slowed down, just kept going (Forrest Gump bear; energizer bunny bear - keeps on walking). That female bear walked 1k miles, 4 states. How? Hidden GPS? Rand McNally atlas? (remember?). How? Had never been. Didn't see. Couldn't smell. Was drugged and inside an enclosed truck. How? And the ans is - we have no clue. Proposals - maybe able to follow Celestial or magnetic cues. (How?). Nobody knows! With all our science, physics - we just don't know. ***Bible - we are fearfully… and here we might note that even the the bears, animals of the world are fearfully and wonderfully made. (all kinds of animal migration that defies explanation). Glorifying the God who conceived and created it all. So two bear stories. Debbie's & mine, and the female energizer bear. But what about bears in the bible? Are there any? Yes indeed. *14X. However, most are not the animal, but the action. 1.Action? Yes, sometimes the word Bear - Bear one another Burdens. You will bear much fruit. That's the action. Not the animal. Bearing much fruit has nothing to do with bears. Job - (Job 9:9, 38:32) - not the animal. What? The constellation known in astronomy as (The Great Bear). The heavens declare. And God even put a great, big bear up there… But what about the animal in Bible? Are there any bears - the animal - in the bible? Yes. Bears in the life of David. (1 Samuel 17:34-35) David wants to fight goliath. You can't, you're a boy. But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear (not boo-boo) came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Whoah! Supernatural. Imagine grabbing a lion, a bear by the fur and killing? Bears fast. Powerful. A man can't. How? Supernatural. (God does things through me that are humanly impossible. I can kill the giant). (David at sight and sound - giant). More (1 Samuel 17:36) Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. Lions - reminded of “lions and tigers and bears, oh no.” - Dorothy. *Supernatural. David - “I am supernat empowered to kill unkillable things.” More - Ans how come can do that. (1 Samuel 17:37) The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.” The Lord. David knew it wasn't him. God. David trusted God… Gave glory to God. Bears in the life of David. And there's still another use of the word Bear in the Life of David. But this one likens David to a bear. (2 Samuel 17:8) Absalom (3rd son of King David) “You know your father (David) and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced fighter; he will not spend the night with the troops. -So here David is likened to a bear. David is bear like. That is, David is a fierce fighter, a fierce warrior - like a wild bear.. -I just want to say - I'm really liking David. Interesting man. *Musician (temp - N). So david was.. *And yet fierce as bear. David is a manly man. David is not soft. David's not quintessential “nice guy. Just nice. Just affirm everybody. Musician/warrior. (And D, I will remind you, David prefigures, pre-pictures JC). So bears in the life of King David. But are there more bears in the Bible, Bears that are not connected with the life of Kind David? Yes. quite a few more. Wisdom lit. Exs: 3.(Proverbs 17:12) “Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly.” 4.(Proverbs 28:15) Like a roaring lion or a charging bear is a wicked ruler over a helpless people. Selah. So there's more… But that's enough. But now I want to come to that Bear - two bears - in the Bible that I mentioned earlier And that's going to bring us into the life and times of the OT prophet Elijah. Start w/ Elisha: Man of God. Prophet. Was supernaturally, mirac taken up - 2 Kings 2 - 1Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind. So… Did he? Yes. 2 K 2 - 11And as they (e and e) still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire (runner - Eric Liddell) and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. So pic that. This is what they saw, and this is what God did…. And Elijah Did not pass go. Did not collect $200. Went up. (Die first? Die later?). *OK, so Elijah went up. Where are the bears? 23He (Elisha) went up from there to Bethel, and while he was going up on the way, some youths came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!” 24And he turned around, and when he saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. And two she-bears came out of the woods and tore (Niv - Mauled, NKJV - Mauled, NASB - Tore up) forty-two of the boys. 25From there he went on to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria. Two things problematic for some people. 1 - he cursed them in the name of God. Cursed them, for a little mocking, taunting? Over the top? 2 - she-bears - tore 42. Of course, we are to understand, didn't just happen. No co-incidence. Providentially sent by God. Over the top. God of the OT? Andy S right - unhitched from the OT? *Bethel - the center for Apostacy). Wicked and idolat in Israel. *Boys. 42 killed, but 42 of them. So more. How many? Don't know. 50? Boys out roaming in a pack. Not well governed at home. What kind of parents allow? Yeah, you're getting the picture. These guys are out roaming around in a mob, looking for something to do, looking for trouble. *Baldy. Was bald? Mocking God's prophet. Mocking the man of God. *Go up - Mocking Elijah. They had heard about… Equiv = Mocking Jesus' ascension. *Mocking Prophet = Mock God. *Just that the God of Isr sent… (if not get that - too tinged with modern sensibilities of “nice.” Modern notions of God - supremely Nice. And you are forgetting that it is a fearful thing to fall… *So two bears in life of Elisha. Any more bears? One final. (Isaiah 11:7 - new heaven and earth) The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together (picture), and the lion will eat straw like the ox. (herbivorous) *Some - metaphor - reconciliation b/t enemies now, in this NC age. *Others - New heavens and new earth. Wherever you place it – it's to the Glory of God. So bears in the Bible. And before we go, one more reference to bears - modern culture, children's songs: If you go down to the woods today, You're sure of a big surprise If you go down to the woods today, You'd better go in disguise. For every bear that ever there was, Will gather there for certain, Because today's the day, The Teddy Bears have their picnic. "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" is a song consisting of a melody written in 1907 by American composer John Walter Bratton, and lyrics added in 1932 by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy. Reflects our fascination with - Bears. B/c amazing creatures, created by a vastly more amazing creator God. Jay wants to Road Trip the Alcan Highway.Things you need on driving the alcon highway by Hannah Lukaszewicz1. SPARE TIRE Driving down the Alcan Highway there is no shortage of potholes that are sure to at your tire (or some may swallow your car whole). We suggest traveling with a full-size spare tire. It could easily be several hundred miles from the next town with an auto body shop.2. GAS CAN There are stretches along the Alcan Highway where there are no gas stations for 200+ miles. Make sure to have a full gas can for emergencies. We bought this 5-gallon gas can on Amazon and it fits perfectly in the middle of our spare tire. 3. ALASKA MILEPOST Alaskans refer to the Milepost book as “the bible to Alaska”. This book has a ton of Alaska information and Alaska maps. It gives a mile by mile description of every highway including accommodation, camping, gas, restaurants, attractions, viewpoints, etc.4. POWER INVERTER Not all electronics can be charged off your car's 12-volt outlet/cigarette lighter port. Having a power inverter is a must especially for charging computers and camera batteries.5. BATTERY STARTER CAR JUMPER If your car dies at home you more than likely will call a friend to come to jump you…well that isn't an option on the Alcan Highway. You'll want a battery starter that doesn't rely on another car.6. TIRE JACK Most cars come with a tire jack, but before you start your drive to Alaska make sure yours is still there. Next, make sure it isn't all rusty and actually works to raise your car high enough to change a tire.7. SATELLITE PHONE If you are driving to Alaska alone or have a loved one that is and you want some peace of mind you might want to consider getting a satellite phone. Satellite phones have been cheaper over the years and wouldn't be a bad idea to have.8. MULTIPLE USB CAR CHARGER Drive days are long and passengers in the car are most likely going to be on some sort of electronic. Make sure to pick up a multi-port USB car charger so your multiple things can charge at once.9. ROAD ATLAS MAP A good map is a must. Don't plan on having data on a majority of the Alcan Highway except in cities. We love our Rand McNally road atlas, it has great detailed maps and points out campgrounds which are great for finding a place to pull over for the night.10. MUSIC Make sure you have Sirus XM radio or a long playlist. No joke there were days where there wasn't a single radio station available. Our 2006 Honda Odyssey wasn't set up for Sirus XM so we had to buy this XM car kit. Or listen to Collage Travel Radio. 11. SNACKS I still remember the day I asked a shop owner where the nearest fast food place was and he told me 10 hours that way (pointing to Alaska) or 4 hours that way (where I just came from)…So yeah make sure you have plenty of snacks in the car. There are sit-down restaurants along the way but if you are like us and you want the drive to Alaska to be over then sitting down for an hour meal isn't an option.12. WATER It's always good to have a few gallons of water just in case your car breaks down. Very few of the designated campsites had water pumps and the ones that we did use we used for cooking & dishes but didn't drink them.13. TOILET PAPER/BABY WIPES If there are no gas stations for 200+ miles that also means no bathrooms…so it's best to have a roll of toilet paper or baby wipes in the car. There are plenty of areas to pull over and do what you go to do but DON'T litter. Make sure to bring your tissue with you and throw it away at the next available garbage can.

That is more than double its current value.
In 1909 Chicago changed dramatically both physically and intellectually. Having grown through fits and starts via annexation and experiencing the most rapid population growth of any city in history, to that point, the Chicago City Council approved a new street and address system in 1908. The new address system took effect in 1909 and employed the Philadelphia and furlong systems to renumber, rename, and rationalize street names and addresses across the city. 1909 also ushered in a momentous intellectual shift in perceptions of what Chicago was and could be. Authored by architects Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett The Plan of Chicago offered an idyllic and revolutionary vision for Windy City that still resonate. Join us in this episode as we interview cartographer, historian, and geographer Dennis McClendon to delve into these concrete and esoteric plans that forever changed the physicality and vision of Chicago. As an Uber/Lyft driver, GPS is critical to my mission of picking up and dropping off my passengers. At times there will be a road closure or an accident and my map will reroute me so I can complete the ride. Where would we be without GPS. Remember those huge Rand McNally map books? Thank God that His Word helps us to reroute our lives when we're heading in the wrong direction.
Historians witness history on the move. What do a simple farmer, a bunch of historians and Napoleon have to do with each other? They probably didn't all share an Uber. Wars have been waged, harsh words spoken, and even the occasional finger has been wagged in a very impolite way. Manors people, manors. We're not animals. But, recently, one farmer overturned the applecart of history by single-handedly changing the internationally-recognized border between two nations. And they did it without firing a single shot, bribing a single official, or even having a clue that they were doing it. While tending their fields, a Belgian farmer moved a 330-pound stone out of the path of their tractor. Presumably using the tractor to accomplish this task. I mean, unless there's a superhero aspect to this story that I missed. Anyway, the farmer moved the stone 7 and a half feet and when on about the business of tending their crops. What crops? I don't know. Let's say pretzels. And not the tiny ones. The big, honkin' size-of-your-head pretzels. The key is salting them at just the right time, because if it rains, all your work gets washed away. but let's dog ear that for now. What the farmer didn't know was that a roaming band of historians were out and about in the area. Side note: if you ever run into a wild pack of historians, don't run, they smell fear. Simply ask them to explain the transition between the middle ages and the renaissance. While they're busy arguing the finer points of traditional beliefs that it stems from the rise of humanism versus the modern opinion that the term is a meaningless delineation, you can slip away. On this particular day, the historians were studying stones that are used to mark the 620 kilometer border between Belgium and France. These massive markers were put in place under the 1820 Treaty of Kortrijk, after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo in 1815. All was going well. Until they discovered, to their horror, that one of the stones had been moved 7 and a half feet into what was, or had been up until that moment, Bousignies-sur-roc, France. That's right. In the farmer's desire to speed the process of tilling their pretzel fields, the Belgian had unwittingly moved a section of the Franco-Belgian border by 2.3 meters. When Mayor David Lavaux, of Erquelinnes, Belgium was notified about the incident, he said "Belgium and our municipality are enlarged! The French don't agree, obviously." We're not sure how many troops were dispatched to the area, or how many calls he received from the United Nations, NATO and Rand McNally, but Lavaux added, "Gonna have to put things back in place." Lavaux said the farmer will not face any legal consequences if they returns the stone to its original position. However, the farmer may be considering another option. If enough of the border stones rest on their property, it might be possible to place the rocks in a circle, forming the new, independent nation of "Pretzel-vania!" SOUND: CLAP OF THUNDER CLINTON (LAUGHING.) Ah, ha, ha. But for now, that's it, we're done, done, done, done, done. Bye bye.

Directions are important... right? I mean you don't want to get lost... you want to get to your destination. It's amazing how much GPS technology has changed our traveling. Sure every once and a while it may lead you to a less traveled dirt road but you don't need the Rand McNally map book that takes up the whole front seat. Here's some directions for you today. 2 Thessalonians 3:5 - "Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ."
Some people prefer paper maps to GPS or map apps. The old-fashioned way may offer some benefits that Waze can't match. (Source: USA Today)

In this episode, Nate tells us about his journey adopting his young son from the foster system and how the trauma of his son's early life has left a complicated matrix of diagnoses. Transcription Voice: Welcome to the Just Ask Mom podcast where parents share their experiences of mothering children with mental illness. Just Ask Mom is a Mothers on the Frontline production. Today we will speak with Nate, an adoptive single Father of 8-year old Ricky. Nate is a military and railroad veteran and lives in Iowa. Tammy: Tell us a bit about yourself before or after you had your son, just tell us a little bit about you? Nate: Back in 2014 I chose to-- well I guess I should go back even further—when I was 30, I told myself that if I wasn't married with 2.5 kids by the time I was 40, it was time to do something. So I did something and when I was 40 in 2014, I got license to adopt. The end of October in 2014. And that's when the road started. A road that I had never been down and very few people in my family ever have either. Including my cousin in Arkansas who is a Special Ed teacher. Prior to that I've been a locomotive engineer for 20 years. Worked all over the country. Before that I was in the military. I'm a military veteran. I was a medic in the military. I had that experience but none of that prepared me for what was to come when I entered the adoption world and the various spectrums of which you would encounter. Tammy: Okay. So pretend you are talking to the public, or you're just telling people who haven't had these experiences that you've had, what do you want them to know? Nate: Well, foster kids, they're in a whole different class and you often hear, these kids are damaged, or these kids have baggage or these kids are bad kids even. The stigma that follows them and none of it is their fault. The public, in general, seems to block out the fact that these kids come from very, very bad situations, and because of that their minds have been reprogrammed in all essence to survive. And that's where a lot of these behaviors come from, and that's what, us, as parents struggle to reprogram. If you can imagine a Rand McNally map of Missouri when a child is born. You have all of those highways going everywhere, well that's a child's brain when they're born. Once you place trauma, physical abuse, sexual abuse and every other avenue on top of that, you might as well take all of those highways on that Missouri map and throw them away and you could just draw four lines that do not intersect each other, that end in nowhere and those four lines are survival, food, shelter, safety and getting their way - what they think is best for them. Those four little highways, that is it in the entire state that end nowhere, that don't talk to each other, and it's up to us as the public, not just the adoptive parents or foster parents, it's up to us as the public to build all those little highways back together again. Tammy: That's right. Nate: To attempt to rebuild that entire map. Now, it's a little bit easier when you get them when they're pretty young, not much, but a little. But it falls back, it just takes a lot, a lot, a lot, of resources to do so. Tammy: Right. Tell us about your situation. How did you come about meeting your son and having your son and what was it like in the beginning? Nate: It was actually very interesting. The end of 2014 and through most of 2015 I had set my home study out on various kids all over the country, literally, that I was interested in but I never really, never got considered for them. Even once they had told me that they even had no other home studies being considered. But just as I was kind of losing hope thinking I had wasted my time getting licensed, I got a phone call. It was almost to the day - the anniversary of when my brother died in 1999. I think it was November 27th of 2015 my brother had taken his life, the end of '99. Tammy: I'm so sorry. Nate: I want to say the 26th and his name was Ric...
You don't have to be a fulltimer or go camping for long periods of time to find lots of uses for an RV. In this episode of the podcast, you meet Kathy and Les, two of our Roadtreking friends who use their RV in lots of different ways - from stealth camping on the streets of New York, to driveway camping at the homes of relatives to hauling her art and craft exhibit to various shows. This couple, who live in suburban Toledo, also have a condo in Florida and use their RV for leisurely trips to ad from, for day trips around the gulf coast and, sometimes, as their second vehicle. You'll hear their story and much more in this episode. [spp-player] Complete shownotes for Episode 61 of Roadtreking:The RV Podcast First Things First: Mike and Jennifer check in from the Gulf Coast This episode comes from the Gulf Cost of Florida's Emerald Coast, where Mike and Jennifer share their travels over the past week and give a preview of where they are headed. Jennifer's Tip of the Week - Five books to inspire your RV Travel Next to RVing, we like reading about RVing and travel almost as much as the going. So we always seem to have some book on hand that gives us ideas on our next trip, or inspiration and understanding about what we are seeing. So, for your off-season consideration, here are the top 5 RV-related books either Mike or I have enjoyed the most this year: [spp-timestamp time="6:25"] Blue Highways - The timeless road story is a masterpiece in travel writing. Mike read it more than 25 years ago and even today, the concept of traveling those two-lane state roads --- the blue highways on state maps –has inspired us to do the same. If you haven't read this collection of road stories, I'm sure you'll enjoy it immensely. Rand McNally 2016 Road Atlas – This is a arge size, large scale easy to read map that we always take with us. Yes, we do use our GPS and we do use apps on our tablet. But nothing takes the place of a paper map and this book, undated every year, is one we buy every year. The Most Scenic Drives in America – This is a coffee table book with gorgeous photographs of 128 drives every RVer needs to take at least once. We always consult it when planning our routes so that we can take in as many of these drives as possible. The Next Exit 2015 – If you travel the Interstates, and we all have to at times, this guide is an essential. It tells you what businesses and services are at each exit. This is another book you want to buy each year because there is new information added to each edition as businesses open and close. But it's very handy to have and well worth the price. Undaunted Courage – This is a big book, full of details and history as it recounts the story of Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and Thomas Jefferson and the Lewis & Clark Expedition to the west. If your RV travels take you to the west, you will undoubtedly come across some sort of Lewis and Clark museum or marker. When you read the book, you'll undertstand the land you are traveling on much better and appreciate the incredible journey taken by these two pioneers and their Corps of Discovery. [spp-tweet tweet="Five Books Every RVer Should Have"] When to Winterize A listener calls in and shares how he lives fulltime in his Class A in Pennsylvania and never winterizes and we then discuss when you need to winterize and when not [spp-timestamp time="9:18"] [spp-tweet tweet="When to winterize and when not to"] Cool Solar Accessories Solar accessories that make the outdoor world more efficient, including a solar charging battery system that can power your home or RV for days [spp-timestamp time="16:07"] [spp-tweet tweet="Great solar accessories for RVers"] New Heating Technology for RVs New technology that allows RVs to have the same high end radiant heating systems as luxury homes [spp-timestamp time="20:57"] [spp-tweet tweet="Heat your RV like a luxury home with a hydronic system"] RV News of the Week Dog Rescued from Burning RV caught on Dash Cam...
