What is consciousness?

CrowdScience

It's pretty obvious to each of us that we are conscious, as we go about our days and feel the experience of just ‘being ourselves'. But how do we know that someone else is conscious? It's something we lose during dreamless sleep, under anaesthesia or in a coma. But what exactly is consciousness? On the one hand, it's pretty obvious - it's what we all feel as we go about our daily lives. It's the experience of 'being you'. On the other hand, it gets pretty tricky when we try to pin down the science of it all. How do we know that someone (or something) else is conscious? CrowdScience listener Sylvester was wondering about this and he got in touch with a few questions on the subject. What is the relationship between our consciousness and reality? Is it all just a hallucination? When does it start and stop? Does consciousness reside in a particular part of the brain? Host Marnie Chesterton sets out to tackle this elusive but utterly fundamental quality of life and sees how researchers are attempting to conceptualise and study it. In the relatively young field of consciousness multiple theories have emerged. A new way of testing them - an adversarial collaboration - is offering a novel approach to not just consciousness research but science more broadly. We visit one lab in Frankfurt that's running experiments for the most recent adversarial collaboration and trying to test two theories of consciousness – Global Neuronal Workspace Theory (GNW) and Integrated Information Theory (IIT) – against each other. Looking at these and other concepts of consciousness like Qualia, Marnie tries to understand this central tenet of our human experience that, in many ways, remains one of the great mysteries of science. Most of us have been no stranger to tossing and turning our sleepless night away at some point, haven't we? Well, I sure know I have! Professor Sean Drummond fell into sleep (see what I did there) as an undergraduate when he volunteered as an undergraduate research assistant at the University of Arizona and since joined the Monash School of Psychological Sciences as a Professor of Clinical Neuroscience in Dec 2014.  He currently also serves as the Director of the Sleep and Circadian Rhythms Research Theme within the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health. In this conversation Sean and I discuss some burning sleep questions, such as: Is there a best time to sleep? Are naps good or bad? Can melatonin help specific sleep problems? How do I build sleep pressure? Should I stay in bed if I can't sleep? How do I create an optimal sleep environment? Should I allocate myself some ‘scheduled worry time'? What is insomnia, and what is it not? Do teenagers have a different sleep schedule? How long after shift work will it take for my sleep to return to normal? What is the relationship between sleep and mental health? I dare say might just sleep easy after tuning into this episode! We've all heard about this crazy phenomenon, we've even named our whole podcast after it! But what is baby brain? Is it scientifically proven and who does it affect? This week we interview Winnie who is studying her PHD at The Turner Institute of Brain and Mental Health at Monash University. Winnie and her team are currently conducting a study on "baby brain" and the cognitive effects that having babies may have on your brain in the 2 year period postpartum. The study is looking at how this affects not only birth mothers, but also fathers, other parenting figures and carers too. This is a great episode full of interesting information, scientifically backed studies and what happens to your brain during pregnancy and postpartum! Winnie and her team at Monash University are currently looking for participants to be involved in their study. Anyone can take part ( if you have kids or no kid) except for pregnant women unfortunately! The study is online and will only take 1 hour of your time. Please sign up by emailing parenthood.study@monash.edu asking for the study information. You can also follow the study and Winnie on instagram at @babybrain.research This podcast is for parents, soon to be parents, wanting to be parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cats, dogs and anyone else who cares to listen. We don't know what we're doing but let's work it out together - come and join our village! Small Business Reco's of the week insta handles: @mondaydesignco @kindclub.au

Sleep... It's so important to living a healthy life, yet we never question the relationship status quo of sleeping in the same bed. Well, we're here to try and normalise sleeping alone for those like me who like their own space at night. Dr Alix Mellor is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Sleep Program at Turner Institute for Brain & Mental Health at Monash University. In this episode, she answers the following questions:Let's start at the beginning: what makes a "good" night sleep? What are the necessary ingredients to achieving this? Can you tell me a bit about the sleep study you conducted where one person in the couple had insomnia?I personally don't sleep well with anyone else in the room (let alone the same bed) - is this common? I think there's a misconception that sleeping in separate beds is "the beginning of the end" of a relationship - what are the reasons couples might choose to sleep apart? I can imagine this might be a good thing if they're bad sleepers / snorers/ insomniacs? How might someone broach the subject with a partner, whether it's long-term or casual? This really is a "it's not you, it's me" situation! In an article I read in the Guardian, you said that we need to normalise sleeping in separate beds - why do you think it's important to normalise it? Guest: Dr Alix MellorWebsite: https://research.monash.edu/en/persons/alix-mellor

In this episode we talk about how parenting affects your brain and memory when you're 70+ years old! We also talk about how these changes affect mothers and fathers differently and how the number of children you have may be related to these effects. So interesting!
