There's a certain kind of strength that comes from knowing who you are, even when the world tries to tell you otherwise. That's what stood out in my conversation with Rio Ferdinand. Not just the success, but the mindset behind it: the habit of refusing to be reduced to a single story.Rio's journey is a lesson in identity, drive, and turning fear into fuel. With all the labels the world tries to throw at us, it's not just about ignoring them, it's about choosing your own. From the football pitch to the ballet studio, Rio shows us what it means to challenge assumptions and walk your own path, even when it's uncomfortable. In this episode, I also dig into a powerful psychological study that reveals how quickly our judgments are shaped by context, how one label can change everything we think we see. It's a sobering insight into how easily we box others in… and how often we do it to ourselves. If you've ever questioned the limits placed on you, or wanted to rewrite the script entirely, there's something in this one for you. Here is a list of studies referenced in the episode:Stereotype and Social Class Study. Researchers: John Darley and Paget Gross (1983)The Pygmalion Effect Study. Researchers: Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson (1968)Name Bias in Psychiatric Diagnosis. Today John Tefteller and our guest, Researcher Dr. Joe Webb, listen to a 1947 episode of Suspense featuring the comedian Eddie Bracken. Suspense often purposely put actors in roles that were in direct contrast with their type. This is a dramatic departure from Bracken's comedic role that we presented on Tuesday. In this story he portrays Elwood, a serial killer, seemingly driven by a distorted perception of love and represented by the objects he steals from his victims. One of my favorite guests that I have the pleasure of speaking with all year is Dr. Praveen Arany. This episode now makes it three years running that he has jumped on the podcast to have a highly informative conversation centered around photobiomodulation (PBM). Being one of the most respected researchers and worldwide experts in the PBM field, these episodes with Dr. Arany are always gems. They feel like we (the audience) are receiving the combination of some tantalizing scuttlebutt from the PBM world while also having some FAQs and concepts clarified, which I've been accruing over the past year since our last conversation. During today's conversation, Dr. Arany provides his insight and perspective on the PBM Conference that took place in London back in late August. We also cover an array of red light therapy topics (i.e., PBM), such as the importance of correct dosage when carrying out treatments, clarification on the issue surrounding sauna use with PBM, the role of various color and wavelengths, blue light and its biological impact and use cases in PBM, red light therapy's potential use for seasonal affective disorder, how PBM can affect oral health and much more! Dr. Praveen Arany is trained as a dentist and an oral pathologist. He completed a joint PhD-Residency program at Harvard University as a Harvard Presidential Scholar. He has two certificates in clinical translational research from Harvard Medical School and the National Institute of Health. He has over 100 scientific publications with several well cited papers to his credit. A complete list of his publications on Pubmed is available here. He is a recipient of numerous awards and has been invited to speak in various national and international forums, reviews for over 50 scientific journals, serves on 9 journal editorial boards. If you found the information in today's episode with Dr. Arany particularly interesting and/or compelling, please share it with a family member, friend, colleague and/or anyone that you think could benefit and be illuminated by this knowledge. Dr. Robin Roscigno helps educate parents about neurodiversity to create a more inclusive world for neurodiverse individuals. In today's episode, we welcome Dr. Ellen Langer, a pioneering researcher and the first woman to become a tenured professor of psychology at Harvard University. Often referred to as the "mother of mindfulness," Dr. Langer has spent over four decades revolutionizing our understanding of the mind-body connection. The bestselling author of books like "Mindfulness," "The Power of Mindful Learning," and "Counterclockwise," Dr. Langer presents ideas from her latest work, "The Mindful Body," revealing how our mindset can significantly impact our physical health and offering practical advice for leading a more conscious and intentional life. Join us as Dr. Langer discusses her groundbreaking research, the extraordinary potential of mindfulness, and how embracing this approach can be a catalyst for profound personal transformation. This conversation is packed with insights that could change the way you think about health and well-being! “When you have a notion of dualism, mind and the body, the main problem is how do you get from this fuzzy thing called thought to something material called the body? And without figuring that out, research had been sort of stalled for centuries. And then I started to think about it and I realized, well, mind, body, these are just words. And that if we put the mind and the body back together and see it as a single unit, then wherever we're putting the mind, we're necessarily putting the body. And you realize of all the things you can think about, the amount of control you have over your health becomes enormous.” - Dr. Ellen Langer What we discuss in this episode: - The astonishing findings of the Counterclockwise experiment and their implications. - How satiation and fatigue are primarily psychological constructs. - What mindfulness is and how to practice it. - The difference between mindfulness and meditation. - Overcoming limitations. - The impact of changing perceptions of aging on our biological age. - Stress and mindfulness. - How practicing mindfulness can alter others' perceptions of you in a positive way. Big tech poses a double issue regarding tech and kids and family concerns. No1. For Parents trying to learn practical skills about parenting and caring in the age of so much technology and now AI, we're often very quickly scared to death: The algorithms favour sensationalist, fear-based marketing: the worst of the worst facts get preference over moderate, nuanced skill-building messaging and we tend to then act out of fear when communicating with our kids around tech, instead of curiosity, building trust, teaching boundaries and validating their interests with their safety in mind. No2. For Kids, the algorithms can serve sensational, sexual or violent content that they're not ready for and don't know how to deal with in a healthy way, often sometimes feeling shame or breeding secrecy over what they've discovered or private conversations they've been invited to. We need to figure out how to be better flashlights for their spotlight minds, and Dr Jocelyn Brewer is back on the podcast to help us take a deep breath and get really good at it. We cover:Gaming/Gaming styles and connection and community green/red flagsTech usage and how we talk about it with our kids (pro tip: WITH, not AT for starters!)Our fears around risk can create a win/lose battle where no one wins. Social media - we're consuming a product, NOT the effort behind it. Kids don't realise. DMs/Messaging and navigating communication and kids knowing how to deal with tough things friends go through (SO good!) Escalation - communication, content, sensationalism in algorithms. AI and the way forward with the pervasive amount of synthetic content now being generated and shared. Share it far and wide - I haven't spoken to a single parent or teacher who hasn't got concerns over some of these topics, and we need more practical skill building, not more fear and denial. #508: Recently I chatted with Stanford researcher Dr. Mary Murphy, a renowned expert in the field of psychological and brain sciences. Dr. Murphy, who is a Professor at Indiana University and conducts research at Stanford University, shared insights into the concepts of fixed mindset and growth mindset. We deep dived into her extensive research on how these mindsets impact motivation, performance, and relationships at work and home. She conducted research alongside legendary psychologist Dr. Carol Dweck, who created the original studies around fixed vs. growth mindset. If you've ever read about fixed vs. growth mindset in the past, you've undoubtedly heard of Carol Dweck, who is legendary in the space. Dr. Dweck mentored Dr. Murphy at Stanford, the university from which Dr. Murphy received her Ph.D. Dr. Murphy's insights can help you cultivate a growth mindset to overcome challenges and achieve your goals. If you want to improve your performance — at work, at home, at the gym, as a world traveler, as an investor, or in any other domain — understanding the research behind mindset is critical. Enjoy! Today, we're joined by Dr. Christopher Gardner, a renowned nutrition researcher and Professor of Medicine at Stanford University. In this episode, Dr. Gardner shares his wealth of knowledge and valuable insights into nutrition science, from dissecting popular diets like ketogenic vs. Mediterranean to discussing his groundbreaking study on cardio-metabolic effects in identical twins randomly assigned to vegan or omnivorous diets, featured in the Netflix documentary "You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment." Throughout the episode, we delve into Dr. Gardner's research, uncover the truth behind diet trends, and hear his practical advice for achieving optimal health. “So the basic design is it's a randomized dietary trial. It happened to be identical twins, which was very unusual. I've never done it before. Identical twins are absolutely hilarious, but the two diet choices that they had to be willing to be part of either way, whichever way the coin was flipped, was a vegan or an omnivorous diet. And I want to clarify just for kicks here, a healthy vegan and a healthy omnivorous diet. There's a lot of bad ways to do any diet, and good ways, or better or worse, for any diet that you want to be on. When we looked at the metabolic risk factors, we had signed up on clinicaltrials.gov stating that LDL cholesterol was our primary outcome. And that dropped by about 15 milligrams per deciliter, more so in the vegans than the omnivores. We also saw a drop in insulin. We saw a drop in weight. Decrease in trimethylamine oxide. Their biological clocks got a little bit younger. Their telomeres stayed a little bit longer if they were vegans.” - Dr. Christopher Gardner What we discuss in this episode: - Telomeres, veganism, and longevity. - Chronological age vs metabolic age. - What fuels your brain? - Healthy foods and weight loss. - What makes a protein high quality? - Dr. Gardner's thoughts on intermittent fasting. - Fermented foods and the microbiome. - Microbial diversity and inflammation. - Dr. Gardner's recommendations for living a healthy life at a healthy weight.
