Thank you for kicking off the New Year with us! You know there is nothing closer to my heart than the story of someone not only dreaming big but finding ways to chase those dreams. Such is the story of today’s guest. Join us for more! Marc Megna is co-owner of Anatomy Fitness gym and a top strength and conditioning coach in Miami, helping hundreds of clients--from celebrities and professional athletes to motivated beginners--achieve their fitness goals. Adhering to the “Dream big, never quit” motto that Marc learned from his mother, he put in years of hard work and unrelenting dedication to transform his life. After playing football and earning a degree in sociology at the University of Richmond, Marc was drafted by the New York Jets in 1999. During his seven-year professional football career, he played for the New England Patriots, Cincinnati Bengals, and Montreal Alouettes.  Now an elite trainer and fitness model, Marc has written for such publications as Fitness RX and Dr. Oz. He’s been featured on the cover of Inside Fitness and Muscle & Fitness magazines. You can listen to his motivating Megna Method podcast and visit www.megnamethod.com. Sports as a coping mechanism How do you cope with life’s problems? Marc learned early on that sports were his coping mechanism for dealing with a difficult childhood. He was a shy, insecure, fat kid, but sports were a big deal in his family. Since he figured out that athletes gained the respect of others, that’s what Marc aspired to become. Being a top athlete became his mission as a young kid, and he was determined to work harder than anyone else. His perseverance paid off, and he made it to the NFL. Now, with a profession built on sports and fitness, Marc can impact others’ lives with his talents.  TWEET: Being a top athlete became Marc’s mission as a young kid, and his perseverance paid off. @marcmegna #chasingdreams The end of a football career How do you know when it’s time to move on? Even though Marc loved his time in the NFL, it was pretty clear to him that he needed to try something else after a series of injuries. He sustained a severe knee injury and infection that almost cost him his leg, and since his knee was compromised, his body was out of alignment. This led to a serious tear in his back, and he knew his football career was over. Marc learned that a significant time commitment is required in anything in which you wish to succeed, and he knew that football coaching was not the route he wanted to take. His current career as a gym co-owner and fitness coach takes a lot of his time, but he genuinely enjoys the time he spends investing in others.  TWEET: After a series of injuries, Marc knew he needed to try something else, and football coaching was not the route he wanted to take. @marcmegna #chasingdreams Don’t get stuck! How do you “show up”? Marc explains that it’s great to show up every day, but what you do when you’re there is important. Doing the same thing over and over again will not yield a different result. Most people are deathly afraid of getting outside their comfort zone. When what you do each day is a drudgery that you hate, then you’re probably stuck in your comfort zone. Do what it takes to get unstuck! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I’m excited about 2020, and I have confidence and good feelings that it will be the Year of Awesome for me---and I hope for you, too! In today’s solo episode by me, I’m sharing Ten Lessons I’ve learned from my past. I hope you’ll listen and take action as we count them down from ten.  10. You can’t do it alone. You need a coach or mentor or someone to help you. I share personal experiences I’ve had with taking online courses, of which some are great, and some, not so much. The ones that include a coaching component are the most helpful. Find someone who will coach and guide you on your journey. TWEET: Find someone to guide you on your journey. #chasingdreams 9. It’s the journey, not the goal. Work toward your dreams, even if you don’t achieve them. The journey to the goal should be joyful and invigorating. Enjoy the journey with all the highs, the lows, and each experience of your adventure. TWEET: Enjoy the journey! #chasingdreams 8. Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes and keep moving. We are our worst critics and worst enemies. We hold ourselves back because we don’t allow our mistakes to happen, and we don’t offer ourselves forgiveness. We feel like we have to punish ourselves for our mistakes. Don’t let your mistake last longer than it needs to. TWEET: Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes. #chasingdreams 7. Find opportunities for yourself along the way. Humble yourself and find the power and value of volunteering or being an intern. Take a chance. You never know what will happen in your story. Don’t stay in the box. Get a shovel and make your own path. Listen to the inspiring story of my podcast producer, Ruth, in Kenya. TWEET: Be humble. #chasingdreams 6. Embrace your fears. This is my new motto for 2020. Fear is what holds most people back from chasing their dreams. What are you afraid of? Make a list. Do your research and figure out how to overcome those fears. If you don’t know how, please message me and let me help. TWEET: Embrace your fears and overcome them.  #chasingdreams 5. Be happy. Life is too short for anything else! You can’t be happy 24/7, but there can be more ups than downs. Spend time with your loved ones. Go on adventures. Do what makes YOU happy, not what makes other people happy. TWEET: Do what makes YOU happy. #chasingdreams 4. What are you waiting for? Don’t follow society’s rules for what everyone else thinks you should do. Don’t let anyone tell you what the deadline is for marriage, having kids, a certain job, or a vacation. Don’t wait! You never know what life will throw at you. TWEET: Don’t wait. #chasingdreams 3. Take care of your mental health. I found myself anxious, stressed, and depressed after a car accident earlier this year. I saw a therapist who helped me talk through what I was feeling and why. It is vitally important to advocate for your mental health. TWEET: Be your own mental health advocate. #chasingdreams 2. Make your own choices. This has been a struggle for me, and it’s a lesson that took a while for me to learn. This is YOUR life, so don’t let other people pressure you to make certain choices. I was 28 years old when I made the first decision for myself about my education and my career. TWEET: This is YOUR life. #chasingdreams 1. Do random acts of kindness. Look for ways to do things that make other people happy without looking for recognition. There is great power in living this way. TWEET: Do random acts of kindness. #chasingdreams 0. My theme for 2020: I am enough. There are things I want to do to improve myself, but I am enough right now.  TWEET: I am enough. #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [2:25] Ten Lessons [4:03] You can’t do it alone [10:07] It’s the journey, not the goal [14:26] Allow your mistakes and keep moving [16:28] Find opportunities along the way [22:15] Embrace your fears [26:08] Be happy [27:40] What are you waiting for? In honor of women’s history month, today’s guest is here to teach us to stop listening to the voices of other people! They force us to do or be certain things that aren’t authentic with who we are. It’s only when we get real about who we are and why we are here in this world----and listen to the voices within us---that we can truly function with compassion and self-love. Akosua Dardaine Edwards is happy to share the lessons she has learned on her journey, based on the foundation of self-love and self-belief. Akosua loves working on the ground level with people of all ages, seeing the transformation firsthand. She is an author, TED talk speaker, and a fantastic truth-speaker. I’m thrilled to meet up with my new friend Akosua today and introduce her to you! YOU have a story to tell Have you ever felt alone and like a failure? Akosua was going through a rough patch in life, and her definition of success was linked to material things and a certain lifestyle. When she “lost it all,” in the human sense, she was left with just herself---a situation that she found difficult to navigate. To deal with this, she ran away to Uganda. It was there that she realized who she really was and why she was here. This led her to the realization that we all have a story to tell, which became the basis for her wildly inspirational TED talk, “There is power in your story.”   TWEET: At the end of it all, WE have to define what makes us joyful. #chasingdreams @akosuadedwards   “Not enoughness”   Have you encountered those moments of “not enoughness?” Fighting against it takes work every day, doing the work faithfully, and being courageous. Akosua says, “You have to be willing to fail, because failure is just an opportunity for you to know that this is not where you are supposed to be.” You have to know WHO you are----not who you THINK you are. Akosua’s message is that you can’t define yourself by what you do for a living or what you own, and don’t ever let your life revolve around things that are fleeting. TWEET: “Not enoughness” will mash you up! #chasingdreams @akosuadedwards If people lived in their truth . . . What if we all lived in our truth? The potential is mind-blowing! Here we are, forcing each other to do certain things and live in certain ways, which only causes people to hide themselves in addictions and so many other things. If we all lived in our truth, social ills would change, people would change, and SO many issues would be eliminated. Besides all of those reasons, whether or not you live in YOUR truth affects your mental health. Akosua shares how she finally learned to honor the voices within herself. TWEET: Do not be afraid of yourself and spending time with yourself. #chasingdreams @akosuadedwards Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Start it. Stop talking about it. How have your dreams played into what you have accomplished in life? For some people, their dreams remain unchanged over the years, and others see their dreams take detours and U-turns as life progresses. In celebration of our 150th episode, I’ve invited some of my beloved family members to join us for a chat about their lives and how they’ve chased their dreams.   I want you to meet my sister Jamie Joshua, my sister Gina Wright, and my brother-in-law Josh Wright. I’ve assembled them from across the globe for this virtual chat in which there is no script and there are no prepared questions. Let’s have fun getting to know them and putting them on the spot as only a sister can do.   We start by getting their take on the world of podcasting and some of their favorites that they listen to regularly. I’m even sharing some of my newfound faves, so listen closely for one or two that you might want to catch also.   How their dreams have played out in life   A common thread among my siblings is the desire to help people and make an impact. You hear that passion as they share their occupations and if that career has truly been the one of their dreams. Jamie is Director of Diversity Inclusion at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. It’s not something she imagined herself doing in her former life as an attorney, but it allows her to help people and make a deeper impact. She says it’s fun to work with a variety of people who have the passion to be change agents in the world. Josh is a dentist at Cornerstone Dental, as is his wife, Gina. Josh started the practice with his brother, and their goal has always been to elevate dental care into a less fearful experience. He has wanted to be a dentist since 8th grade, and even though there have been detours along the way, he has kept his constant vision. He loves establishing relationships with his patients and not just running them in and out of the chair. Gina always wanted to be a doctor, but ended up a dentist. She likes the hands-on approach of dentistry and finds great pleasure in helping people with their smiles.   TWEET: “Write it down and tell someone. It’s the first step toward getting there.” #chasingdreams     How they see others following their dreams   Jamie works with people who are interested in using education to help them figure out their dreams. She loves being the person to remind them of those dreams. Josh sees patients ages 1-98, but he says part of his fun in dentistry is seeing kids grow, develop, and chase their dreams. Gina sees younger staff in their office who want to learn and make their dreams come true. Most of them are in the work because it’s a career they love, and not just a way to make a living.   TWEET: “Do research on what interests you and keep a log of what you find.” #chasingdreams   How they stay sane and their advice for those who think they CAN’T   With busy and demanding careers, it’s vitally important to have other interests that bring joy and peace. Jamie likes to see movies, collect comic books, and spend quality time with friends. Gina has a lifelong passion for calligraphy and is always seeking to do new things with lettering styles. She says it’s a great stress release and gives her a way to make things for people, who are always appreciative of her efforts. Josh gravitates toward woodworking projects like spice racks, wooden pens, and cutting boards. Sometimes he and Gina collaborate on a special project that includes his woodworking and her calligraphy. To the people who think they can’t take on a hobby or don’t have time for self-care interests, they give the following advice: Josh says it comes down to making time for dreams with small, manageable steps; Jamie says you should learn to multitask in small batches of time and always make time for self-care; Gina’s advice is to be a little selfish in taking care of yourself and don’t compare yourself to others. It’s about the progress and the journey you can take joy in that matters most.    Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take-- From Jamie: “Write it down and tell someone. It’s the first step toward getting there.” From Josh: “Take the first step and start small.” From Gina: “Do research on what interests you and keep a log of what you find.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE:   [2:31] The podcasts that interest them most [9:12] What they do today as compared with what they THOUGHT they would do [16:59] Their interactions with people of all genders and ethnicities [21:28] What they do to stay sane [27:54] Their advice to those who think they CAN’T [34:46] ONE action for a dream chaser to take   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE:   Podcasts mentioned: At Home With The Read Let’s Unpack That Daytime Confidential Embedded How I Built This S-Town The Impact Theory MTR Network Jesus and Jollof   TWEETS YOU CAN USE:   TWEET: “Be a little bit selfish in taking care of yourself.” #chasingdreams   TWEET: “I love helping people figure out their dreams and how to follow them.” #chasingdreams   TWEET: “Practice makes perfect and practice makes progress.” #chasingdreams   TWEET: “There is a lot of stuff happening in our country that we can’t pretend is NOT happening.” #chasingdreams

What have you had to overcome to chase your dreams? Today’s guest overcame severe anxiety, explored what he wanted to accomplish in his life, and found the support to make it happen. His journey wasn’t an easy one, but it’s been fulfilling and rewarding, and----the best is yet to come! He’s here as part of our celebration of June as Pride Month, and I’m beyond excited to share his inspiring story with you. Juel D. Lane is an American dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, and one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.” Most recently, Juel was a featured dancer in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert, which starred John Legend, Brandon Victor Dixon, and Sara Bareilles. From October 2017 through March 2018, Alvin Alley American Dance Theater’s second company, Alley II, toured Juel’s piece, “Touch and Agree” around the world. Currently dancing with Bessie Award-winning Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Juel D. Lane’s dance films, Just Another Day, How to Kill A Ghost, and When the Beat Drops, showcase this multi-talented choreographer’s dynamism.  Find what drives you How does a kid get through anxiety? For young Juel, he was anxious, nervous, and didn’t know WHO he really was. It was his involvement in the arts that broke the hold of anxiety in his life. He says when you figure out what really drives you, then the anxiety evaporates. It was his high school years that revealed his love for the arts and set the path that his storied career would take. With unwavering support from his parents, he found that being on the stage and performing began to “feel like home.” TWEET: Figure out what really drives you and the anxiety will evaporate. @jueldlane #chasingdreams Where the inspiration comes from Can you be real and raw? Juel takes seriously his responsibility to create choreography that “strips labels and shows humanity.” His sources of inspiration bring the rawness and authenticity to his work. He explains that his work, How to Kill a Ghost, came out of a doomed relationship that he was reluctant to let go of. He used the dance as therapy for the healing that needed to take place. Juel produces “honest choreography that comes from an honest state.” He knows that people are looking for dance to “feed their souls.” TWEET: People are looking for dance to “feed their souls.” @jueldlane #chasingdreams   Fighting the fear How do you handle fear in your life? Juel says that he takes fear by the hand and says, “Not today!” When you find your zone and can stay there, then everything else goes away. Juel knows that amazing feeling when the lights dim and the curtains go up and he’s proud to have been a part of such monumental experiences in his career. The success is what pushes him to work hard and want more. When you push yourself, it gives you inspiration to lead into the next project. Juel shares how important it is to do things that scare you and help you conquer your fear. Jeff Brown is the host and creator of the Read to Lead podcast, a top-ranked business and career podcast in iTunes. He spent 26 years in radio, and for 6 of those years he co-hosted an award-winning and nationally syndicated morning show. Using his background and talents, Jeff’s mission is to help you bridge the gap between intentionality and implementation. He does this through public speaking, mentoring, teaching, and most often through the Read to Lead podcast. Jeff is a firm believer in the mantra, “Leaders read and Readers lead.” TWEET: “Getting the #job wasn’t as difficult as keeping the job.” @theJeffBrown Changing paths: How do you react when circumstances force you to change what you THOUGHT was your path? It’s something many dream chasers face, and it’s important to be aware when new opportunities present themselves. Jeff shares how he went from studying to be a music teacher to an “accidental” radio career. It all started with a crash course and led to his first radio job over 30 years ago! TWEET: “I’ve been #fired from almost every #radio #job I’ve had.” #Overcomer @theJeffBrown The Reluctant Podcaster: Do you have an idea you’ve been hesitant to try out? Jeff first had an idea about podcasting LONG before he had the nerve to jump into it. He knew he had skills to learn, plans to make, and research to do---and it took one step at a time. It turns out that losing one job opened the doors for him to launch into podcasting. He admits that it took some poking and prodding from others for him to take the leap, but podcasting has led him to coaching and teaching about creating content and honing interviewing skills. TWEET: “It took poking and prodding from others to convince me to start #podcasting.” @theJeffBrown Inspiring people: Do you know how to REALLY listen? Jeff shares his personal experience in his mastermind group and how each person was able to share skills that helped the others. In your group or on your team, the two most important skills are being present and listening. Learn how to block out distractions and protect “sacred” time, and learn to listen and let the conversation flow. Jeff says that mastering these skills will make you a valuable part of your team! TWEET: “I had to get over the mental hurdle of what “reading” really is.” @theJeffBrown   Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“The baby steps you take now may not feel like they make a big difference, but over time, they add up and they will be impactful.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:58] Sharing gifts, giving value, and impacting others [2:46] How Jeff’s radio career began by accident [5:33] Getting and keeping a job in radio [8:13] Fighting for a job he loved [9:51] How Jeff “clicked” with the fickle field of radio [12:02] Jeff’s sign to move on [13:50] The plunge into podcasting [18:13] Surround yourself with positive people who are smarter than you [22:07] Realizing it’s time to move on [24:50] Two rules for your group or team [28:36] Jeff’s mantra and how Read to Lead began [31:27] The podcast episodes, authors, and the books [34:37] What it means to “give yourself permission” [37:13] When you don’t feel ready or worthy: Take action! Our guest this week is the founder of Fabulously Driven Me, Flip Your Life community member, Dr. Yanina Gomez. Dr. Gomez is a mother of 2 amazing children and wife to an Art enthusiast. She received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology back in 2009. She used to work a nine-to-five, but wanted to have the freedom to be there for her family, reach out and help more people gain clarity and confidence -- you know, live her life to the fullest. She co-founded Art NXT Level with her husband, and worked as a gallerist at 33 Contemporary Gallery, that has been running for over 10 years in Chicago. This was her husband's thing though, and so she founded her own membership community, Fabulously Driven Me. How To Plan For The Holiday Season

If you haven’t already, then the next week or two will be the start of the holiday rush in your store. The next 2 months are the ones that get you through the leaner times.Your feet are going to hurt, you’re back will be sore, you’ll discover the most amazing customers, and then wonder if the Grinch has materialised in a whole bunch of other customers. [Tweet "Planning your store for the holidays? - If you haven’t started yet, don’t worry, it’s not too late."] So let’s talk planning your merchandising and your store, for the holidays. There’s something about the holiday season that seems to bring out the extremes in people. I put it down to everyone being rushed, stressed and wanting to make the holidays perfect.Whilst my inspiration for filming this is obviously the Christmas season, todays download and this episode can be used for any holiday season, or even a big in store event. If you haven’t already, you need to rough out a merchandising calendar. Download Your Holiday Planner Here are the things that I map out, to ensure a minimal headache holiday season. Firstly, download my calendar, and grab a pencil and eraser. This will make it easier for you to brainstorm. Next, go to your POS system and find the top 10 products from last year. Now look at what new products are trending in your store, and add those into your planner For each week, develop a theme. It could be as simple as a colour way, it could be a price point, or a recipient, like ‘gifts for teachers’. The point is to have a cohesive theme running through your store, your advertising, your social media and your website, because cohesiveness gets your customer to know, like and trust you. The 3 foundations to developing a relationship with your customer. Now that you have identified your themes, which products can be used to market the theme. Ok, so ideas, check Products, check Where are these displays going to occur? Are they big window features, are they impulse purchases, will they be displayed on a gondola or table? You’ve got 20 products you’ve got in mind to sell, sell, sell, so make the most of your real estate. By now, You’ve got a pretty good idea of where your store is heading for this holiday season, by the time you’ve gotten this far. Work out how much stock you’ll need for each promotion, when you need it by, and remember to factor in the lead time for ordering, because suppliers are often delayed with shipping in this crazy period. Now, let’s help the customer and make their shopping experience easier. Which products can you upsell with your main promotion item? Maybe it’s one of those things you use to put a candle out, if you sell candles, perhaps it’s batteries if your item requires them, but doesn’t come with them. It can be big or small. The tip is to display items together that help your customer make a choice. Lastly, map out your promotional calendar. What social media channels are you going to use? Will you feature the product in your newsletter – hint, this is the time when you should be sending out weekly emails at a minimum. [Tweet "Do you want to do last minute paid advertising, wither print or online?"] Some advertisers just may have someone pull out at the last minute do to stock running low, or a product not arriving, which will allow you big bargaining power. And, what promotional material do you need in store. Coloured streamers, signs, table cloths, all those bits and bobs that you may have overlooked, write them down now. It will help you avoid those last minute dashes to the store. It sounds like a lot, doesn’t it. And in reality, it probably is. But I know that it’s all too easy to get caught up in the rush before the holidays, and planning can get overlooked, so whether you’re doing it last minute, or planning next year, download my Holiday Planner to help you avoid at least one, holiday headache Download your Holiday Planner   Subscribe to the Bringing Business To Retail Podcast

Mind Body Musings Podcast: Feminine Embodiment | Surrender & Trust | Relationships | Limiting Beliefs | Authenticity

Episode 60: Camille DePutter has always been a storyteller. Whether it was writing the editors of Archie Comics to correct their grammar, or developing key messages to convince her parents to let her have more candy, at a very young age she learned the importance of telling a story, and telling it well. She is part poet and part pragmatist. She’s worked as a communications expert in marketing, advertising, public relations, and in-house, and through the years she has helped business leaders gain followings and build customer bonds with authentic, articulate, artful communication. She has also learned first-hand the power of telling one’s own story: of sharing our most significant, transformative moments, or capturing the memories and experiences of our loved ones. These are the stories that make us who we are – but sometimes we need help telling them. When she says she writes with heart, she means that literally. She was born with a heart condition. For about thirty years she tried to hide the story of her own heart. Today it is her signature story: a defining experience that she uses to show herself to the world, and help others do the same. Watch the video of this story HERE. Here's what we talk about in today's episode: Camille's heart condition causing shame growing up How Camille created a passion out of storytelling and why she helps others do the same How readiness is an important factor for exploring your past and future story The different forms of storytelling Moving on from identifying with labels that have been holding you down, but also being able to open the doors to other opportunities you never thought were in the cards for you The power of helping others now even if you're still struggling (especially if you're still struggling) How the world needs more people that aren't afraid to be honest Noticing the language that goes on in your head towards other people not meeting expectations An amazing resource Camille wants you to take advantage of!
