With Yanina Welp I discuss different ways of how direct democratic institutions have been applied in Latin American countries – both in fundamentally democratizing processes but also power grabbing incidents. In particular, we talk about the cases of Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela, based on Yanina's extensive research and deep knowledge. Yanina also shares her insights on how direct democracy can be a check on the power of the executive and legislative branches of government. And I also want to know what she expects from the second attempt in Chile to write a brand new constitution, that the people will decide on in a referendum in December. Yanina Welp is a Research Fellow at the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy  at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. Between 2008 and 2018 she was principal researcher at the Centre for Democracy Studies and co-director of the Zurich Latin American Centre, both at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. She got her PhD in Political and Social Sciences from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona and a habilitation from the University of St. Gallen. We all have times when we let our inner critic – the critical and judgmental voice inside our head – hold us back from moving forward with something we're excited about. But what if there was a way to befriend our inner critic instead of pushing her away?     In today's episode, I talk with psychologist, author and speaker Dr. Yanina Gomez about her new book: Crush Self-Sabotage and Live Life Fully: The Artist's Wellness Journey to Confidence and Success, which she co-wrote with her husband, Sergio Gomez. Narrador consagrado y autor de libros inolvidables como “Soldados de Salamina”, “Anatomía de un instante” y “El impostor”, Javier Cercas cumple además con un feliz destino: sus libros son éxito de ventas y reciben muy buenas críticas. Cercas nació en 1962 en Ibahernando, un pequeño pueblo que, como toda España, había terminado dividido por la Guerra Civil, ese trauma que aún corroe las entrañas del país. Luego de varios años de dedicarse a novelas de no ficción, en el 2019 el escritor sorprendió a todo el mundo al ganar el Premio Planeta con una novela policial, "Terra Alta", cuyo protagonista, Melchor Marín, es un policía muy lector -admirador del Víctor Hugo de "Los Miserables"- que alguna vez estuvo preso y lleva con él una carga fuerte de resentimiento que lo hace muchas veces cruzar la delicada línea que hay entre la justicia y la venganza. Melchor se ha convertido para gran parte de la sociedad en un héroe luego de dar muerte a cuatro terroristas que estaban por llevar a cabo un ataque cerca de Barcelona. A "Terra Alta" le siguió "Independencia", con el conflicto catalán como tema central y ahora es el turno de "El castillo de Barbazul", en donde algo que ha sido capital en las tramas de las anteriores novelas (la violencia contra las mujeres) afecta esta vez a la hija adolescente de Melchor, Cosette. Melchor se ha retirado de la Policía y se ha vuelto bibliotecario, pero deberá investigar una trama de trata que, por lo que le indica su principal fuente, tiene a la cabeza a un filántropo multimillonario sueco. En la sección Libros que sí, Hinde recomendó “Reunión”, de Natasha Brown (Anagrama) y “Esma. Represión y poder en el centro clandestino de detención más emblemático de la última dictadura argentina” (Fondo de Cultura Económica), antología coordinada por Marina Franco y Claudia Feld. En la sección En voz alta, la actriz Yanina Gruden leyó un fragmento del libro “Irse yendo” de la escritora uruguaya Leonor Courtoisie. A Yanina la pueden ver en la obra Caribe en el Centro Cultural San Martín. Y en Mesita de Luz, desde Montevideo el músico Fernando Cabrera nos contó que libros está leyendo.
