Kicking off the new year with a Famicom banger! Uchuu Keibitai SDF is a vertical shooter released by HAL Laboratory in 1990 for the Japanese market only. While the game leaves a bit to be desired, the soundtrack is great and definitely worth exploring. It was composed by HAL veterans, Jun Ishikawa (known for Kirby Super Star, Alcahest, and Hyper Zone) and Hideki Kanazashi (known for F1-Race, Mach Rider, Eggerland, Rollerball, and Adventures of Lolo). Great music and plenty of space babies to keep it interesting. Constraining Cosmological Parameters using the Cluster Mass-Richness Relation by Mohamed H. Abdullah et al. on Tuesday 18 October The cluster mass-richness relation (MRR) is an observationally efficient and potentially powerful cosmological tool for constraining the mean matter density of the universe and the amplitude of fluctuations using the cluster abundance technique. We derive the MRR relation using GalWCat19, a publicly available galaxy cluster catalog we created from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-DR13 spectroscopic dataset. The MRR shows a tail at the low-richness end. Using the Illustris-TNG and mini-Uchuu cosmological numerical simulations, we demonstrate that this tail is caused by systematical uncertainties. We show that, by means of a judicious cut, identified by the use of the Hinge function, it is possible to determine a richness threshold above which the MRR is linear i.e., where cluster mass scales with richness as logM_200 = alpha + beta logN_200. We derive the MRR and show it is consistent with both sets of simulations with a slope of beta ~ 1. We use our MRR to estimate cluster masses from the GalWCat19 catalog which we then use to set constraints on omega_m and sigma_8. Utilizing the all-member MRR, we obtain constraints of omega_m = 0.31 (+0.04-0.03) and sigma_8 = 0.82 (+0.05-0.04), and utilizing the red-member MRR, we obtain omega_m = 0.31 (+0.04-0.03) and sigma_8 = 0.81 (+0.05-0.04). Our constraints on omega_m and sigma_8 are consistent and very competitive with the Planck 2018 results. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09530v1
The Local Group's mass: probably no more than the sum of its parts by Till Sawala et al. on Sunday 16 October The total mass of the Local Group (LG) and the masses of its primary constituents, the Milky Way and M31, are important anchors for several cosmological questions. In recent years, independent measurements have consistently yielded halo masses close to $10^{12} mathrm{M_odot}$ for the MW, and $1-2 times 10^{12} mathrm{M_odot}$ for M31, while estimates derived from the pair's kinematics via the `timing argument' have yielded a combined mass of around $5 times 10^{12} mathrm{M_odot}$. Here, we analyse the extremely large Uchuu simulation to constrain the mass of the Local Group and its two most massive members. First, we demonstrate the importance of selecting LG analogues whose kinematics are dominated by mutual interactions to a similar extent as the LG. Adopting the observed separation and radial velocity, we obtain a weighted posterior of $75_{-40}^{+65}$ kms$^{-1}$ for the uncertain transverse velocity. Via Gaussian process regression, we infer a total mass of $3.2^{+1.2}_{-0.9} times 10^{12} mathrm{M_odot}$, significantly below the timing argument prediction. Importantly, we show that the remaining uncertainty is not rooted in the analysis or observational errors, but in the irreducible scatter in the kinematics-mass relation. We further find a mass for the less massive halo of $0.9_{-0.3}^{+0.6} times 10^{12} mathrm{M_odot}$ and for the more massive halo of $2.3_{-0.9}^{+1.0} times 10^{12} mathrm{M_odot}$, consistent with independent measurements of the masses of MW and M31, respectively. Incorporating the mass of the MW as an additional prior allows us to further constrain all measurements and determine that the MW is very likely to be the lower mass object of the two. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07250v1

Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! We've entered the double-digits of Urusei Yatsura's omnibus volumes, and to mark the occasion we're mixing up our format for covering the manga from here on out. Our past couple of volume discussions have run so long that from here on out we'll be splitting our discussions of the omnibuses into two separate episodes as opposed to one big long one, which we hope will help us edit and release episodes more reliably and regularly! We're starting off our coverage of the 10th omnibus today with a collection of stories that deal with summertime and memories! Tune in as we explore some fishy stories involving a love triangle between a pool ghoul, blowfish, and a shark, a jellyfish in a can jam, and learning to swim like your life depends on it! Plus we take a stroll down memory lane while reliving Sakura's childhood by playing with monsters, Ryuu's rocky relationship with her strange estranged mother (?), and Benten's literal chain of memories! So join us for some fun in the sun and to learn some surprising secrets about some beloved characters' lives as we dive into another swimmingly fluid volume of Urusei Yatsura! Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! We've officially hit the halfway point of the Urusei Yatsura manga! The series' ninth omnibus is a fantastic collection of stories, a real showcase of the manga in its prime! Perhaps no storyline best demonstrates this than the series' longest and most ambitious story arc to date - The Miss Tomobiki Contest! A mini-tournament arc featuring the badass beauties of the series facing off against each other and wild animals, this storyline is an awesome and hilarious mix of character gags and action-comedy, and another step towards the style of storytelling Takahashi would employ later in Ranma 1/2! But while The Miss Tomobiki Contest is definitely the main event, this volume is also jam-packed with a ton of other great and memorable stories, including the origins of Mendo's claustrophobia, the revenge of Galactic Teacher CAO-2, the identity of Ryuu's mother, and Ryuu and Shinobu's "pretend" date!

Remember the philosophical argument our universe is a simulation? Well, a team of astrophysicists say they've created the biggest simulated universe yet. But you won't find any virtual beings in it—or even planets or stars. The simulation is 9.6 billion light-years to a side, so its smallest structures are still enormous (the size of small galaxies). The model's 2.1 trillion particles simulate the dark matter glue holding the universe together. Named Uchuu, or Japanese for “outer space,” the simulation covers some 13.8 billion years and will help scientists study how dark matter has driven cosmic evolution since the Big Bang. Dark matter is mysterious—we've yet to pin down its particles—and yet it's also one of the most powerful natural phenomena known. Scientists believe it makes up 27 percent of the universe. Ordinary matter—stars, planets, you, me—comprise less than 5 percent. Cosmic halos of dark matter resist the dark energy pulling the universe apart, and they drive the evolution of large-scale structures, from the smallest galaxies to the biggest galaxy clusters. Of course, all this change takes an epic amount of time. It's so slow that, to us, the universe appears as a still photograph. So scientists make simulations. But making a 3D video of almost the entire universe takes computer power. A lot of it. Uchuu commandeered all 40,200 processors in astronomy's biggest supercomputer, ATERUI II, for a solid 48 hours a month over the course of a year. The results are gorgeous and useful. “Uchuu is like a time machine,” said Julia F. Ereza, a PhD student at IAA-CSIC. “We can go forward, backward, and stop in time. We can ‘zoom in' on a single galaxy or ‘zoom out' to visualize a whole cluster. We can see what is really happening at every instant and in every place of the Universe from its earliest days to the present.” Perhaps the coolest part is that the team compressed the whole thing down to a relatively manageable size of 100 terabytes and made it available to anyone. Obviously, most of us won't have that kind of storage lying around, but many researchers likely will. This isn't the first—and won't be the last—mind-bogglingly big simulation. Rather, Uchuu is the latest member of a growing family tree dating back to 1970, when Princeton's Jim Peebles simulated 300 “galaxy” particles on then-state-of-the-art computers. While earlier simulations sometimes failed to follow sensible evolutionary paths—spawning mutant galaxies or rogue black holes—with the advent of more computing power and better code, they've become good enough to support serious science. Some go big. Others go detailed. Increasingly, one needn't preclude the other. Every few years, it seems, astronomers break new ground. In 2005, the biggest simulated universe was 10 billion particles; by 2011, it was 374 billion. More recently, the Illustris TNG project has unveiled impressively detailed (and yet still huge) simulations. Scientists hope that by setting up the universe's early conditions and physical laws and then hitting play, their simulations will reproduce the basic features of the physical universe as we see it. This lends further weight to theories of cosmology and also helps explain or even make predictions about current and future observations. Astronomers expect Uchuu will help them interpret galaxy surveys from the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii and the European Space Agency's Euclid space telescope, due for launch in 2022. Simulations in hand, scientists will refine the story of how all this came to be, and where it's headed. (Learn more about the work in the team's article published this month in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.) Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! Continuing our read-through of Viz's rerelease of the manga, we cover volume 7! This volume prominently features Onsen-Mark... sorry, “Hot Springs Emblem.” We still need to get used to that. But hey, his name change may leave us cold but some like it Hot Springs Emblem so who are we to judge? Anyway, everyone's favorite bewildered and beleaguered educator gets the spotlight in a lot of chapters this volume, building off of the Tomobiki High-centric stories and Teachers vs Students conflict established last time. But this volume also features the notable returns of some old frenemies - Kurama and Tobimaro! Coincidentally, both are out for Mendo's head - in more ways than one! Man, Mendo gets into a lot of trouble in this volume, doesn't he? We also talk about the series's pop culture references, color pages, character dynamics, and so much more in another lengthy but jam-packed discussion of one of the series' most eclectic volumes yet! Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! Continuing our read-through of Viz’s rerelease of the manga, we cover volume 7! This volume prominently features Onsen-Mark... sorry, “Hot Springs Emblem.” We still need to get used to that. But hey, his name change may leave us cold but some like it Hot Springs Emblem so who are we to judge? Anyway, everyone’s favorite bewildered and beleaguered educator gets the spotlight in a lot of chapters this volume, building off of the Tomobiki High-centric stories and Teachers vs Students conflict established last time. But this volume also features the notable returns of some old frenemies - Kurama and Tobimaro! Coincidentally, both are out for Mendo's head - in more ways than one! Man, Mendo gets into a lot of trouble in this volume, doesn’t he? We also talk about the series’s pop culture references, color pages, character dynamics, and so much more in another lengthy but jam-packed discussion of one of the series’ most eclectic volumes yet! Music Featured: “Kokoroboisona” from Jam Trip: Urusei Yatsura (Vol. 1) “Uchuu wa Tai Hen Da! DA DA Mix” from Shudai-ka Best 10 Remix ~ Dance Tracks Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @Lum_Squad, on tumblr at lumsquad.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube! Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! We went back on an unexpected hiatus again last year, but hey, Viz’s second attempt to release UY in the 90s also unceremoniously stopped too. As they say, the third time’s the charm, and at least we’ve come back for our third try much faster than they did! Much like Viz’s regular releases of the series, we’re dedicated to resuming regular episodes of this podcast, which in our case will be monthly releases on the last friday of every month from here on out! We’ve already got some episodes banked and planned, and with more manga coming out and Discotek bringing the movies out later this year, there’ll always be plenty to talk about! Our plans for the next couple of episodes involve catching back up on the manga, starting with volume 6; the first volume featuring newly translated UY chapters from Viz in over 20 years! We excitedly discuss the first appearances of prominent characters like Kotastu Neko and Ryoko Mendou, the recurring conflict between the Tomobiki students and their teachers, and some classic stories playing around with japanese history and alien biology! Afterward, we dig into one of AC’s favorite hobbies - anime cel collecting! AC explains the history of cells, what the Urusei Yatsura cel market is like, and some of his favorite gets and most regretful misses. AC’s tips and tricks of the trade will be sure to help you get a start on building an awesome anime cel collection of your very own! So grab some tasty taiyaki and curl up in your comfiest kotatsu, and chill out listening to another lively episode of #Lum Squad! Hello, darlings! Welcome to the return of our Urusei Yatsura podcast, Lum Squad! Well, technically we already returned in last month's episode, but there was actually a year-long break in between recording that and this episode! Think of it as like how there was a break between Viz's original publication of "Lum" that prompted their continuation being re-titled "The Return of Lum." Except we're not re-titling this podcast; it didn't work in the 90's and it ain't happening now. Anyways, because it'd been so long since AC and I recorded the show, we decided to spend this episode going through all the UY volumes Viz has released in the past year and share our thoughts on them! We discuss our favorite chapters, characters, the translation, lettering, and pretty much everything! Oh, and you KNOW we ranted about the whole "Hot Springs Emblem" situation. I really hope Viz reconsiders that name... Afterward, we dive into the Urusei Yatsura fan community, exploring its history and current state now! Look forward to our next episode where we'll dive into our experiences collecting Urusei Yatsura merch and memorabilia! Oh, and of course, if you haven't heard the news that Discotek has relicensed the Urusei Yatsura movies and plans to release them on streaming and blu-ray later this year - yeah, that's happening! We're more than excited and looking forward to discussing the new and the films in future episodes! Music Featured: “Kokoroboisona” from Jam Trip: Urusei Yatsura (Vol. 1) “Uchuu wa Tai Hen Da! Hello darlings! We're the #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! As longtime Manga Mavericks fans know, Urusei Yatsura is LumRanmaYasha's favorite manga, and they've been wanting to make a podcast about it for a long time. Teamed up together with AC, the leader of Twitter's #LumSquad and the #DailyLum, we're starting up a new monthly podcast dedicated to discussing the series! In our inaugural episode, we introduce ourselves, our history with the series, and our thoughts on the first volume of Viz Media's new omnibus editions of the series! Plus, we analyze the complicated character of the lecherous simpleton Ataru Moroboshi, and answer a ton of Q&As, including what episodes we'd recommend to newcomers and how…”effable” is Mendou! Let's put weird and weird together, because space is super weird, and we're going to talk about it! Hello darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! That’s right, we’re not a one-and-done nor were we meant to be an annual show… even though it has in fact been a year since our last episode. I apologize for that unexpected year-long hiatus, which is entirely my fault. ^^, From here on out I’m hoping to resume production on #LumSquad with AC on our originally proposed monthly schedule. It’s definitely a shame to have such a large gap between the release of the first episode and the second, but hey, it took the Urusei Yatsura manga a year and a half of irregular serialization until it became a proper long-running series, so you can think of our first episode as a pilot and this second episode onward as the real beginning of our regular podcast! Since we covered the manga on our first episode, for our second installment we’re diving deep into the anime! We explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Plus, we rant about Mamoru Oshii’s influence and question common assertions made about the show’s quality, while sharing some thoughts on the show’s eclectic musical score. To top it off, we answer a ton of fan questions, and talk about our favorite episodes of the show! All in all, we spend two and a half hours discussing the anime, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of stuff we plan to cover in future episodes! Thank you guys so much for being patient with this and looking forward to more #LumSquad! We received a lot of enthusiasm for the first episode and a lot of people asking about when the second would come out over the past months, and I hope you’ll enjoy this episode enough to forgive the wait! And hey, if you don’t want to wait another month for our third episode, check out our recent Manga Mavericks episode on the Urusei Yatsura manga with special guest Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast, which was a ton of fun and also very informative about the early days of the UY fandom in North America back in the 90s! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Intro & Updates 02:32 - An Introduction to the Anime 06:19 - Lum’s Love Song 09:06 - Shinobu Miyake: A Character Analysis 15:32 - The Shift From Two-Story to Single-Story Episodes 19:33 - The Cultural Impact of the Anime 29:51 - Urusei Yatsura in the U.S. 37:18 - Specials 39:30 - How the Anime Changed Over Time 41:47 - Mamoru Oshii, Kentaro Yamazaki, and the Production Staff of Urusei Yatsura 1:07:12 - Our History with the Anime Q&A’s!! 1:26:22 - Our Thoughts on the Tachiguishi and Backdoor Pilots 1:30:40 - “Which Animation Style Do You Prefer: Pierrot or Dean?” 1:32:44 - Cindy and the Musical Talent of Urusei Yatsura 1:36:24 - “Do You Think Urusei Yatsura Would Ever Work as a Live-Action TV Show?” 1:41:35 - Urusei Yatsura Hentai 1:43:13 - “Was There Any Episode You Didn’t Like Initially, but Liked It the Second Time (or Vice-Versa)?” 1:57:00 - “Do You Guys Think the Relationship Between Lum & Ataru is Different Between the Manga and the Anime?” 2:01:05 - “Least Favorite Episode?” 2:08:00 - “What Period of the Show Do You Enjoy the Most?” 2:10:15 - “What is Urusei Yatsura’s Popularity in Japan?” 2:11:58 - Ataru Moroboshi, Ryo Saeba, and 80s Anime Protagonists 2:14:18 - Library Availability of Urusei Yatsura 2:15:40 - “What Would You Change About the Anime if You Could?” 2:21:05 - Our Favorite Episodes of Urusei Yatsura 2:34:43 - Wrap-Up & Future Plans Music Featured: “Main Motif (Theme)” from Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, by Masaru Hoshii and Keiichi Oku “Kokoroboisona” from Jam Trip: Urusei Yatsura (Vol. 1) “Uchuu wa Tai Hen Da! Hello darlings! We're the #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura! As longtime Manga Mavericks fans know, Urusei Yatsura is LumRanmaYasha’s favorite manga, and they’ve been wanting to make a podcast about it for a long time. Teamed up together with AC, the leader of Twitter’s #LumSquad and the #DailyLum, we’re starting up a new monthly podcast dedicated to discussing the series! In our inaugural episode, we introduce ourselves, our history with the series, and our thoughts on the first volume of Viz Media’s new omnibus editions of the series! Plus, we analyze the complicated character of the lecherous simpleton Ataru Moroboshi, and answer a ton of Q&As, including what episodes we’d recommend to newcomers and how…”effable” is Mendou! Let’s put weird and weird together, because space is super weird, and we’re going to talk about it!
