“Why do you seek the living among the dead?” sounds like a chastisement. Until we remember that the only reason that ANYone knows that Jesus' tomb is empty is because a whole crew of faithful women showed up at the place of death, with the intention of attending to the dead. Indeed, it is only by returning again and again to the tombs of today's Empires that we can be gathered as resurrection communities who follow Jesus' call to “storm the gates of Hades” which shall never prevail against us. May we keep seeking (and finding!) the living (and life!) among the dead (and places of death!). God brings life, we roll away the stone and help remove the graveclothes. Why do we think Jesus waits before visiting Lazarus? What were Mary and Martha thinking as Jesus goes to the tomb? What might the symbolism of removing the stone be? Lazarus can't do it. What is the significance of the disciples helping Lazarus to remove the graveclothes? Where is resurrection needed in our life? In our community? John 11:33-44 33 When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” 38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. Alex Sanchez grew up in an area where drug use, gangs, poverty, and racism were a part of everyday life. He lost his dad at the young age of two. He just wanted to be accepted, but society rejected him. But the gang culture accepted him. He was constantly told he wasn't going to amount to anything. He lived into what they said he would be. His aggression fueled by the gang culture and drug addiction led to violence and inflicting pain on others. Ultimately, he landed a 10-year prison sentence. This week, we examine a program called Underground Ministries, in which faith communities adopt a prisoner to ease their transition to life beyond bars.

The local county jail was just the first portal to the rabbit hole—into the underground of polite society, the streets, the supermax prisons, the cycle between the two that function like the circles of hell, or Hades today. I am now the founding director of Underground Ministries. We want to pry open that underworld of our making, one relationship at a time. We are based in Skagit Valley, WA, but our models for churches and businesses to get in the game are resources of a wider movement. We want to make resurrection an ethic, a practice—for folks who thought they believed in it or not.

In my role as a CFP, I've been introduced to some awesome people and organizations across the country and the world. Today's guest, Pastor Chris Hoke, is one of those people. Chris is the co-founder of Underground Ministries, which serves to mobilize faith communities and businesses in the Pacific Northwest by connecting them to men and women being released from prison.  This movement takes faith organizations and connects them with an individual that's being released from prison. It helps them build a network outside of the prison system, which can help them overcome the significant barriers to reentry into society. The only story that made sense to him was doing the “Jesus stuff.” Chris wound up in the PNW working with theologians among undocumented migrant workers picking cucumbers and strawberries in fields. He found himself engaging in theological study in a small jail.  There were young men Chris's age who were funny, open about their anger, and asked brilliant questions. They just happened to be in prison. He'd talk until late into the night, interacting with men he'd never been exposed to in church. These men had lived through incredible abuse and unspeakable traumas.  But when they were released from prison, they'd end up in the streets, lost in homelessness, addiction, and gang violence. Or, they'd end up back in prison. That's where Chris's work began. He became their pastor. He knew that needed to find a way to help these men (and women) transition back into society.  God is in the resurrection business—not the disposal businessAmerica has a problem with mass incarceration, 8x as much as the second or third place incarceration per capita in the developed world. America embraces a culture of disposability. We don't fix broken things, we throw them away. Chris points out that we treat humans like garbage. It's easier to throw away a broken person into the landfill system. Prisons are a human dumpster. He shares that there are amazing human beings in prisons. “[Prison] is an incredible waste of humanity yet it's an incredible discovery of new friends and the magic of healing and the discovery that God is in the healing business.”  How to approach charitable giving with a different lensChris often finds himself surprised when he speaks with people in churches or at conferences and they share their “giving philosophy” with him. It's usually something like “We don't like to create dependence so we only give in cycles once every few years.” Chris finds this appalling. It's not how relationships work. It's certainly not how good investing works.  If everyone gave based on that philosophy, every non-profit would have to double their overhead to constantly try and develop new relationships and donors versus building on existing relationships. During his 16 years of working as a chaplain and a pastor with men and women in jail and in prison in Washington state, Chris Hoke has seen that oftentimes we don't want to completely rethink our lives until things fall apart.  He sees prisoners either trying to get back to the way things used to be. But--sometimes men or women are ready to totally rethink their lives and let go of the old ways of doing things.  What might we learn from those who can see their lockdown time, their re-entry process with clear new eyes.  Churches are actually calling this time of emerging from COVID the re-entry process. Here’s a mix I recorded back in November 2007 which I’ve just rediscovered, I forgot what a great mix this is so decided it needs to be put back out there, its one of the most uplifting, funky, soulful selections of pure U.S house music. When this mix was first recorded it was only available on CD’s which were given out at bars and clubs on the south coast, it was then added to my podcast site soon after and it was massively popular.
