Dr. Rachel Berman is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Academic General Pediatrics at Children's Hospital at Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She earned her her BA in Social Anthropology at Harvard University in 2004 and her MD and MPH at Boston University's School of Medicine and School of Public Health in 2010. Dr. Berman then completed her pediatric residency at the Boston Combined Residency Program in Pediatrics in 2013, followed by a residency in Preventive Medicine at Boston Medical Center in 2015. Dr. Berman practices general pediatrics, and she serves as her clinic's clinician champion for social needs screening and referrals. Dr. Berman teaches residents and medical students, and through a grant from the American Medical Association's Reimagining Residency Initiative, she has been working to develop a curriculum on social and structural determinants of health for residents in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology. Most recently, she is participating in the 2022-2023 United Hospital Fund's PEDS Network Fellowship Program, which provides early career pediatricians with mentorship and support for projects that aim to improve health equity for young children and families. Her project specifically focuses on sharing opportunities for civic engagement with her patients and their families. Jared Kutzin, DNP, MS, MPH, RN, FSSH is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Senior Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Jared is a registered nurse with advanced degrees in health policy and management, public health, leadership, and medical education. His advanced training includes completing the Clinical Quality Fellowship Program (CQFP) offered by the Greater New York Hospital Association and the United Hospital Fund and the Comprehensive Patient Safety Leadership Fellowship (CPSLF) offered by the National Patient Safety Foundation and American Hospital Association. Today I speak with Frank Licciardi, a cancer survivor and an award-winning healthcare advocate. Frank was diagnosed with metastatic gastric cancer in his early thirties and given a one percent probability of survival. Not only did he beat the odds, but he's 12 years cancer-free. Since then, Frank left his job in finance to serve as Chair Emeritus of the “Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality” at Memorial Sloan Kettering, where he underwent his cancer treatment. And in 2020 Frank won the United Hospital Fund's Excellence in Health Care Award. Join Dave Nassaney, The Caregiver’s Caregiver, as he interviews Author, Carol Levine, the director of The Families and Health Care Project at The United Hospital Fund, a health services research and philanthropic organization whose primary mission is to shape positive change in health care for the people of New York (and elsewhere). Their campaign, Next Step in Care, provides easy-to-use guides to help family caregivers and health care providers work closely together to plan and implement safe and smooth transitions for chronically or seriously ill patients. Transitions are moves between care settings, for example, hospital to home or rehab facility, or the start or end of home care agency services. Because transitions are often rushed, miscommunication and errors can occur. Her book, Living in the Land of Limbo: Fiction and Poetry about Family Caregiving, is a first-of-its-kind anthology of short stories and poetry about family caregiving by renowned authors and others has just been published. Compiled and edited by Carol Levine, and published by Vanderbilt University Press, the new volume is a valuable addition to the national discussion on family caregiving and to the Fund’s work, which has focused on improving partnerships between caregivers and health care professionals since 1996.

New York City Undergraduate Commencement 2011 with honorary degree recipient Jo Ivey Boufford, MD. Dr. Ivey Boufford is President of The New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Boufford is Professor of Public Service, Health Policy, and Management at the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. She served as Dean of the Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University from June 1997 to November 2002. Prior to that, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health in the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) from November 1993 to January 1997, and as Acting Assistant Secretary from January 1997 to May 1997. While at HHS, she served as the US representative on the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 1994 to 1997. From May 1991 to September 1993, Dr. Boufford served as Director of the King’s Fund College, London England. The King’s Fund is a royal charity dedicated to the support of health and social services in London and the United Kingdom. She served as President of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC), the largest municipal system in the United States, from December 1985 until October 1989. Dr. Boufford was awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship at the Institute of Medicine in Washington, DC, for 1979-1980. She served as a member of the National Council on Graduate Medical Education and the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality from 1997 to 2002. She is currently Chair of the Board of Directors for the Center for Health Care Strategies and serves on the boards of the United Hospital Fund, the Primary Care Development Corporation and Public Health Solutions formerly MHRA. She was President of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (2002 -2003). She was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1992 and is a member of its Executive Council, Board on Global Health and Board on African Science Academy Development. She was elected to serve for a four-year term as the Foreign Secretary of the IOM beginning July 1, 2006. She received an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree from the State University of New York, Brooklyn, in May 1992 and the New York Medical College in May 2007. She was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration in 2005. She has been a Fellow of The New York Academy of Medicine since 1988 and a Trustee since 2004. Dr. Boufford attended Wellesley College for two years and received her BA (Psychology) magna cum laude from the University of Michigan, and her MD, with distinction, from the University of Michigan Medical School.
