TCW Podcast Episode 233 - Baldur's Gate When three doctors, a prolific dungeon master, a database programmer, and a writer come together to make video games, you get Baldur's Gate! Often credited with saving the Western RPG, Baldur's Gate became a phenomenal hit, taking full advantage of Microsoft's new DirectX API and Windows 95. With this technology, the team created massive, beautiful maps for players to explore. They began shopping their new Infinity Engine around—drawing attention from top figures at Virgin Interactive—but ultimately secured a deal with Interplay, after an initial rejection. This partnership allowed them to shift from an original pantheon-based RPG to using the Dungeons & Dragons license that Interplay had acquired from TSR. They focused on the Sword Coast and the city of Baldur's Gate—an underdeveloped region of the Forgotten Realms that stayed true to the classic swords-and-sorcery motif. The result was a game that captured the spirit of D&D while delivering the fast-paced action that gamers of the late '90s craved! My guest today Julian 'Jaz' Rignall. A formative character in my life in games during his role as the editor for magazines like Mean Machines and CVG, Julian is the first guest I've spoken to on checkpoints that I did drawings of as a child. As well as reminiscing about the UK magazine scene of the eighties and nineties, we talk about growing up in Aberystwyth and the arcade scene that forged his love of games, his time winning the 1983 computer game championship at Club Xenon in London, his move to America and his tumultuous time working for Virgin Interactive, his role in the nascent IGN, and how through it all his love of games has never faltered. We also hit on why Defender is still so good, he origins of JAZ as a moniker, the soothing charms of Hearthstone and Destiny, how games like Rescue on Fractulus made him realise games could be something truly extraordinary and why his twelve year old self likely wouldn't believe him if he explained a game like World of Warcraft existed."Pick any game you want. I'm good at all of 'em. I've got 97 of 'em. "PATREON - patreon.com/checkpointsiTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEWTheme song by Samuel BakerArt work by Craig Stevenson
Chris Rausch worked for Neversoft as a Game Designer for Pro Skater 1 through Underground 1. Many will recognize him by one of his nicknames: Team Chicken: think: TC's Roof Gap in School 2. Chris is currently the Creative Director for Nicalis, and previous co-founder of Supervillain Studios. He is a longstanding vet of the games industry, starting as a teenager with Virgin Interactive and 21holding his first lead design role at the age of 19. He played a massive role in the work that brought the Tony Hawk franchise to life with Neversoft. Chris has seen the entire scope of the games industry from high successes of massive triple-a games, to the rough and trying times of a scrappy start-up. Chris also was involved with and interviewed for the Pretending I'm A Superman THPS documentary.
Sure, it was originally a sports game based on ancient pok-ta-pok, and yeah, the story is just Eternal Champion, and okay, I'll admit that the character designs look like the dregs of DeviantArt, but damn, I wish that Thrill Kill actually came out. On this episode, my good friend, Yeti, joins me to discuss the game that never was, and the game it became. The game would later be repurposed as Wu Tang: Shaolin Style (which friggin' rips, by the way). Anyone who has ever played the Def Jam wrestling series will surely see a clear influence in the cartoony style and somewhat free roaming nature in the square playable areas. The franchise had a comic book deal with Malibu Comics at one point. We talk about the infamous E3 98 event, wherein the developers made interesting choices for last-minute replacement for actresses depicting two of the characters. At one point, Virgin Interactive was literally hucking boxes full of porn into the developer, Paradox's offices to inspire the first ever MA rated game, but then they realize that retailers would not be keen on that sort of thing, and then the tone changed and everything got dialed back. Things got even worse with trade deals, until one unnamed champion leaked a full version of the game online in a playable Rom.
