On Play Retro today, we talk about the impact of Dune II! Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty (titled Dune II: Battle for Arrakis in Europe and Dune: The Battle for Arrakis for the North American Mega Drive/Genesis port, respectively) is a 1992 real-time strategy game developed by Westwood Studios and published by Virgin Games. It serves as the sequel to Dune, following a more traditional adventure strategy game format, that came out earlier the same year. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Command & Conquer (C&C) real-time strategy series, first developed by Westwood Studios, has been a genre-defining and commercially successful franchise ever since its introduction in the mid-nineties. Any kid from that era who grew up with a PC capable of playing games has likely played at least one title from the long running series. This podcast episode relives what it was like going through the installation, building an army, and talks about the strategies used way back when to help either the Global Defense Initiative or the Brotherhood of Nod to victory.
Adaptations toujours, avec Pierre Salard, alias The Spaceshipper. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1991's Eye of the Beholder, from Westwood Studios and published by Strategic Simulations Inc. We set the game in its time before exploring its primary mechanics and the feel of being in this world. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First level or two Issues covered: knowing who the evil is, tactical top down Gold Box, the opening cutscene, being amazed at how much they get into the Game Boy version of a Metroid game, lots of movie tie-ins, a wide variety of machines, lack of automap, being everything one wanted for a Forgotten Realms nerd, one of the ten games, semi real-time, living inside the depths of Waterdeep, a style of play which continues today, having to rest immediately, gaining information through audio, uncovering the whole map vs racing towards the goal, tournament play, losing is fun, the only way out is through, annotating a later map, interacting with the play space, accessibility and the mouse, contextualization and abstraction in game design, having to throw weapons in the world, how cool the audio is, using items to locate yourself, creating a party, crunchy spells, shout-outs to upcoming work, difficulty in the bosses in Metroid games then and now, games influencing games, getting the green light, justifying the game via the sweet spot of trends, why not just make this a Star Wars game, how green lighting changes with bigger franchises, games that changed our perspectives.

This week, we're deploying COMMAND AND CONQUER into perhaps hostile territory, as the RTS classic attempts to take ground on the Nintendo 64. We look back at the history of the once-prolific series, including a deep dive into the dearly departed Westwood Studios, and see if C&C can break the console RTS curse. Also, we're both very tired and overhot this episode, so it gets a little slappy. Wir schreiben das Jahr 1993. Die in Las Vegas beheimateten Westwood Studios veröffentlichen ihr neues PC-exklusives Rollenspiel: Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos. Sections played: A few hours in Issues covered: games of 1997, the PlayStation cycle, where this game fits on the Castlevania history, sticking with 2D, pushing the transition to polygons, similarities with Super Metroid, the large number of relics, lacking map markers of any kind, needing to have made a map, spending a lot of time covering the map again, reasons why QoL doesn't get in, being primarily melee, adding action feel through melee, using the ranged subweapons, new subweapon mechanics for switching, changing into a wolf or bat (vespertilionize: a real word), being able to turn off relics, giving the player more options to customize the experience, offering too many options for player attention, the opening battle against Dracula, switching up characters, connecting the games, having slots for armor, leaning into the gothic with character design, being able to cast spells with combos, customization options that feel like classes, effects of leveling up, the history of adding RPG elements to games, RPG elements vs progression mechanics, making interesting choices about character, why the structure of Metroidvanias works for Tim, unification and motivation of mechanics and exploration, contrasting with open world games with lots of exploring, acquiring more verbs and designing to the addition of verbs, the resilience of the genre, mixing in these mechanics can work, the game you imagine vs the game you get, the reality of budgets, finding new features that weren't in the first game of a series, business forces, not living up to expectations, the expenses of development, wanting the developers to be excited about what they're doing, FPGAs vs software emulators and clone consoles, ultra-hobby options, having a wealth of options to play, preserving history, companies being poor at preservation. Matthew Erickson is one of the few voice actors who has worked (physically, at least) at both Ocean Studios locations. He made the leap from working at Blue Water Studios in Calgary to Westwood Studios in Vancouver, and is noted for his roles as Shinn Aska in Gundam SEED Destiny, Amuro Ray in Zeta Gundam and Trunks in the Blue Water dub of Dragonball GT. He joins me in this episode to talk about his experiences as a voice actor across two cities.

Hey Blockers! Time for episode 8, where I talk all about the long-lived Command and Conquer series. But, first things first, a bit of news: GoG.com has begun selling Telltale games titles. Telltale has done some great work in continuing on some great older adventure franchises like Monkey Island and Sam & Max. Also, I was able to get my new Roland MT-32 and give you my thoughts on it thus far. Then on to the main topic, Westwood Studios' 1995 game: Command and Conquer. I run down the usual suspects (genre, gameplay, plot, dev story) and also talk about a few followup games in the series. Download the Command and Conquer for free (legally, I promise!) Buy Command and Conquer: The First Decade on EA Origin or Amazon. Stay tuned for the next show where we travel back to World War I in Red Baron.

Today's show is centered around a video game, an old one. I've had Monopoly 1995 for many years and always loved the music in it, So I found a MIDI to MP3 program and converted them all. The downside, there are no titles I can find so no track list unfortunately. Game made by Westwood. 17 Tracks, Playtime about 55 minutes
