Rise to the top of the Goodfellas in this Cinemaware classic!
Long ago, in 1985, personal computers came in two general categories: the friendly, childish game machine used for fun (exemplified by Atari and Commodore products); and the boring, beige adult box used for business (exemplified by products from IBM). The game machines became fascinating technical and artistic platforms that were of limited real-world utility. The IBM products were all utility, with little emphasis on aesthetics and no emphasis on fun. Into this bifurcated computing environment came the Commodore Amiga 1000. This personal computer featured a palette of 4,096 colors, unprecedented animation capabilities, four-channel stereo sound, the capacity to run multiple applications simultaneously, a graphical user interface, and powerful processing potential. It was, Jimmy Maher writes in The Future Was Here, the world's first true multimedia personal computer. Maher argues that the Amiga's capacity to store and display color photographs, manipulate video (giving amateurs access to professional tools), and use recordings of real-world sound were the seeds of the digital media future: digital cameras, Photoshop, MP3 players, and even YouTube, Flickr, and the blogosphere. He examines different facets of the platform--from Deluxe Paint to AmigaOS to Cinemaware--in each chapter, creating a portrait of the platform and the communities of practice that surrounded it. Of course, Maher acknowledges, the Amiga was not perfect: the DOS component of the operating systems was clunky and ill-matched, for example, and crashes often accompanied multitasking attempts. And Commodore went bankrupt in 1994. But for a few years, the Amiga's technical qualities were harnessed by engineers, programmers, artists, and others to push back boundaries and transform the culture of computing. Cinemaware turned to 1950s monster movies for inspiration when developing a 1989 computer game about giant ants attacking small town America. Now It Came From The Desert comes full circle as a 2018 feature film! An arrogant motocross racer and his shy mechanic must stop genetically modified insects from feasting on friends attending their victory kegger. But have these fanboys seen too many B-flicks to make an original mark on the genre? Listen now to find out if Arnie, Justin, and Stuart must burn down another freak game-adaptation-gone-wrong.
Wow! After an unplanned seven month hiatus I'm back! Before jumping right back into the schedule, I decided to jump in with a little show updating everyone about the state of the show, why I went away for seven months and to get through a bit of an email backlog that has built up while I was off being distracted with my dumb life. Next time, we'll be covering the 1986 Cinemaware game, Defender of the Crown.
Welcome to another fun filled episode of RGDS. In this episode Paul Driscoll (AKA The Drisk) is joined by Gordon King (AKA Kingy) In the show we discuss games that were inspired by B-Movies. We have a great range of classic games to discuss from It Came From The Desert through to the unreleased Sega CD game Bug Blaster : Exterminators... So sit back and embrace the beautiful cheesy world of B-Movie Sci-Fi. We also want to welcome Gordon King as a new fully fledged member of the RGDS crew. Please join us in giving him a really warm welcome. It is time for yet another Patreon Hangout! This time around, Brian, Craig, Tomer, Troels and myself get together to discuss "feats of strength" in DOS and Pre-Windows XP gaming. What does this mean? Have you ever gone to extraordinary measures to get a game running? Done anything nuts with hardware? Done anything crazy in a game that resulted in either an epic win or a crushing defeat? We talk about those things, largest executable program size, programming while under rocket attack and more! Next time, we'll be covering the 1986 Cinemaware game, Defender of the Crown.
B-Movies and games don't always go together. Here, they most certainly do. Adrian introduces us to a stone cold Amiga/PC classic from the geniuses at Cinemaware. Welcome to another fun filled episode of RGDS. In this episode Paul Driscoll, Richard Yaxely and Jonathan Keen. Time for episode 101 in which we discuss the 1988 Microprose flight sim, F-19 Stealth Fighter and its sequel/remake, F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0! First though, I read some email that leads us to two cool links: Troels and I playing A Final Unity: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLeuPHRWonRSTOs9KHN_aPgbinDMJfQP9J Ben Chandler's PC Gamer article about adventure game backgrounds: http://www.pcgamer.com/ten-of-the-best-classic-adventure-game-scenes/ We then get into the usual topics around these unique Microprose flight sims. Enjoy!
In this episode Greg and George look at a early SNES game you probably never played, much less heard off -- a 'sequel' to the classic Amiga game Wings by Cinemaware (which has a remake available on GOG, Steam, and Mobile and is very good!). We say 'sequel' cause this game wasn't really designed to follow up on Wings, but shares some of the mission layout, gameplay, and tactics of the original game. But is it worth playing? Join us as we discuss this and give the game the usual coverage. Any feedback, questions, comments, etc. can be left on our FB page or e-mailed to thesnespodcast@yahoo.com and as always thanks for your support!

No news, a few game impressions (Soul Sacrifice demo among them), and no GOTY BS – mostly just one, long, leisurely, holiday trip through the history of video games – PC and console, Japanese and American -- as we talk through the career of uber-programmer Gregg Tavares, a man who has worked at just about everywhere (Sony, Sega, Microprose, Virgin Interactive, Cinemaware, Naughty Dog, etc.) and on every system (Commodore 64, Amiga, NES, PC, 3DO, M2, Arcade, PSX, PS2, PSP, etc.) at one point or another, and has the stories to prove it. Happy holidays!

It Came from the Desert (1989) hervorgingen.
