Today, I'm sharing a replay of my conversation on The Mental Golf Show with Josh Nichols. This conversation originally went live on July 25, 2024. Together, we unpack how subconscious beliefs, emotional baggage, and unhelpful mental patterns sabotage consistency—and how hypnotherapy provides a rapid path to lasting change. In this episode, you'll learn: The real difference between talk therapy and hypnotherapy Why “scarcity of time” is ruining your focus and enjoyment How visualization mistakes (not just success) can improve performance Why fear of success may be quietly sabotaging your game How old rules you agreed to long ago are still running your life Why emotional regulation is the key to unlocking fast change How to reframe golf as part of life—not something competing against it If you've ever struggled with fear of failure, the pressure to perform, time scarcity, or self-sabotage on the course, this conversation will hit home. You'll walk away with a deeper understanding of how the subconscious mind impacts your game—and what you can do about it. Get your pencils ready and start listening. Instagram: @thegolfhypnotherapist Twitter: @parsoverbogeys Key Takeaways: Hypnosis isn't mind control—it's deep relaxation with a goal. Fear of failure often masks a deeper fear of success. Scarcity of time leads to rushed, low-quality rounds. You can rewire emotional reactions like frustration and anger—they're learned. Visualization is most effective when it includes mistakes and recovery. Talk therapy can be helpful—but hypnotherapy often produces faster results. Your belief in what you're worthy of is the ceiling for your golf performance. Key Quotes: “Hypnosis is meditation with a goal.” “Fear of failure is often really fear of success in disguise.” “You don't need more swing tips—you need to address what's going on between the ears.” “Your subconscious doesn't care if you're successful. It cares if you're safe.” “If you want to make visualization work, you have to include mistakes.” “Anger might have served you as a young golfer—but now it holds you back.” “Golf is part of life—not something competing against it.” Time Stamps: 00:00: Introduction and Background 03:02: The Role of Nutrition in Golf Performance 05:58: Scarcity Mentality in Golf 08:46: Balancing Life and Golf 12:07: Understanding Hypnotherapy 14:57: Hypnotherapy vs. Traditional Therapy 27:15: The Value of Traditional Talk Therapy 30:05: The Speed of Change: Hypnotherapy vs. Traditional Methods 33:17: Breaking Free from Limiting Beliefs 37:23: Fear of Failure and Its Impact on Performance 41:44: The Fear of Success: A Hidden Barrier 45:56: Visualization Techniques for Golf Improvement 49:52: Continuous Growth and the Journey of Self-Discovery 52:56: Setting Ambitious Goals and Embracing the Process

In this episode I'm joined by Andrew Allen to discuss last night's 5-1 win over Bolton in the Carabao Cup. There's spotlight on the youngsters after we started 16 year old Jack Porter in goal, Josh Nichols at right-back as well as Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly. There's some focus on those two after a couple of goals from the former, and an impressive performance at left-back from the latter, as well as a mention for the other Hale End debuts, and an interesting 90 minutes from Raheem Sterling who got his first Arsenal goal. We also reflect on the start to the season with all the challenges we've faced, the so-called 'dark arts' and lots more.Get extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast. Meet Josh Nichols - a Golf Psychology Coach with an impressive resume over 20 years of competitive golf. Josh was 36 holes away from qualifying for the Masters. You'll learn more about his mental and emotional experience before, during, and after this 36-hole finale and how it shaped who he is today and what he does. This is truly one of the most fascinating conversations I've had, and I know you'll find it valuable and enjoy it. In today's episode, you'll learn more about the mental and emotional challenges of playing in high-pressure tournaments - and how to overcome them, how to integrate a practice of acknowledgment and acceptance to accelerate results, as well as why having a pre-shot routine really matters (and the unknown benefits it provides). Get your pencils ready and start listening. More About Josh Josh Nichols is a Golf Psychology Coach, and has been playing competitive amateur golfer for over 20 years. Josh run's his own business, Foundations Mental Performance, where he works with individuals all over the world on their golf psychology as a way to help them play better golf and get more enjoyment out of the game. Host of The Mental Golf Show Author of The Mental Regrip Newsletter Twitter/X: @joshlukenichols Instagram: joshlukenichols Key Takeaways: Acknowledging and accepting mistakes is crucial in moving on from poor performances. Focusing on what is important in the present moment helps to stay mentally resilient. Understanding and managing emotions is key to maintaining a positive mindset in golf. A strong pre-shot routine and commitment to the target can improve performance. Mindset and mental resilience play a significant role in golf success. It's normal to feel frustration or anger after a poor shot in golf. Suppressing these emotions can lead to more trouble down the road. Allow yourself a moment to feel the emotions and then move on. Don't try to ignore or suppress them. The pre-shot routine is important for helping players feel confident and present. It should focus on getting freed up, accepting the results, and picking a good target. The details of the pre-shot routine don't matter as much as the overall purpose. It doesn't have to be the same every time, but it should help you accomplish your mental goals. Having a plan and being flexible with it is key in golf. Accepting and embracing the emotions that come with playing can help players be more present and perform better. Key Quotes: "Mistakes are normal. Mistakes are human." "Acceptance and saying, 'I, any shot could be a bad golf shot.'" "What's important to me now? What's relevant now?" "That emotion is a normal human response. It's okay, it's normal, and kind of circling back to what you said earlier, it's the repression of those emotions that lead to more trouble down the road." "I think working through it, however long it takes. I would never say you're not allowed to feel it, but I also wouldn't say you need to stop feeling it after 10 seconds." "The pre-shot routine is to get you freed up, to get you feeling confident, which is to say, 'This ball could go anywhere and I'll be okay.'" Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Dr. Rob continues his discussion with Josh Nichols on some of the common tactics addicts and abusers use to gaslight their victims. In this episode, Josh focuses on the person who is receiving the gaslight treatment. Whatever you might be going through, there is no shame in staying with your addict. Sometimes the best thing for your family is to work through the issues, and sometimes the best thing for your family is for you to leave. Each case is individual to the person, but the most important thing you should know is that you're not crazy and that your initial gut reaction is almost always correct! TAKEAWAYS: [1:35] Why do abusers work so hard to make someone think they're crazy? [3:35] You're not a bad person if you were on the receiving end of this treatment. [6:00] Abusers love to discredit your gut feelings and intuition, but your intuition is still accurate, deep down. [8:25] A healthy person wants to have a conversation about an issue or a feeling they're having, the gaslighter does not. They want you to be distracted by something else. [11:45] It's okay to question someone else's version of reality. [13:15] You're not a weak person for staying with an abuser. [15:25] What made Josh so interested in this subject? [19:40] You're not alone in your pain. There are many people who have had to deal with a gaslighter. [20:00] You are not this bad person that your abuser has made you out to be! RESOURCES: Sex and Relationship Healing @RobWeissMSW Sex Addiction 101 Seeking Integrity Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men Prodependence: Moving Beyond Codependency Out of the Doghouse by Robert Weiss Familysolutionsok.com QUOTES: “Abusers do it in such a way where they make you feel silly, stupid, or crazy. They teach you to not trust your gut, but your gut is still accurate.” “A healthy person wants to have more conversation about it, a gaslighter does not. The whole goal is to get you off my trail.” “Sometimes courage is leaving, and sometimes courage is staying.”
Dr. Rob talks with Josh Nichols about common gaslighting tactics addicts and manipulative people tend to use. We like to think the world might be full of these calculating abusers, but often times these tactics are used as a knee-jerk reaction and come from a place of survival. Today, Josh offers some tips on how to spot a gaslighter and what you might be feeling from some of their gaslighting actions. TAKEAWAYS: [2:10] A little bit about Josh and why he wanted to talk about gaslighting. [2:55] What's the difference between gaslighting and lair? [5:40] Victims feel like they're going crazy and feel such relief when a therapist finally validates their thoughts. [8:30] Why do people gaslight other people? [10:45] A common tactic these people use is to confirm your belief in that person and then they will use this as leverage to deny your own reality. [14:00] These people tend not to be psychopaths or sociopaths. They're just trying to maintain control. [17:25] A person will often try to use different tactics to cover up their gaslighting. What does this look like? [18:00] There are three archetypes you have to look out for: The blame shifter, the victim, and the self-shamer. [24:25] Unfortunately, gaslighters love to exploit your trust and sense of safety you have with that person. RESOURCES: Sex and Relationship Healing @RobWeissMSW Sex Addiction 101 Seeking Integrity Cruise Control: Understanding Sex Addiction in Gay Men Prodependence: Moving Beyond Codependency Out of the Doghouse by Robert Weiss Familysolutionsok.com QUOTES: “These people are exploiting some kind of vulnerability and they can exploit the trust and love in the relationship.” “Addicts have maladaptive coping mechanisms and are really good survivors, and gaslighting becomes one of the tools.” “Gaslighters have three different types: The blame shifter, the victim, and the self-shamer.”

Ever wonder what happens when political figures start getting treated like religious icons? Well, buckle up, because singer-songwriter Josh Nichols is here to chat about just that. We're diving into the unsettling trend of comparing Donald Trump to Jesus, especially when election season heats up on social media. These comparisons aren't just off—they're seriously problematic. Josh's powerful song "God vs MAGA" takes a stand against this dangerous idolization of political figures, shedding light on the toxic rhetoric that equates Trump with Christ. We'll explore how these false comparisons mess with our faith and distract us from the true essence of Jesus' teachings. American nationalism often disguises itself as Christianity, but what's the spiritual fallout? We're breaking down the troubling habit of mixing faith with national pride, and how this can turn patriotism into a form of idolatry. Josh's song "God vs MAGA" calls out the manipulation of religious beliefs by political players, showing how these actions can lead to a misguided faith in political leaders. We also draw some interesting parallels between Trump's portrayal and the biblical figure Barabbas, highlighting the need to find truth amid all the political noise. We'll talk about the clash between personal rights and biblical principles of humility and selflessness, digging into the theological implications and contrasting earthly citizenship with eternal values. Josh's powerful lyrics, including the line "God doesn't want to make America great again," remind us that our loyalty should be to God's kingdom, not a nation. Critical thinking and independent thought are key to navigating the noise of corporate media and political propaganda. We discuss the liberating power of letting go and having faith, and how critical thinking helps us form confident, independent opinions. From addressing the idolatry of political beliefs to calling out the hypocrisy within pro-life stances, this episode urges us to elevate our faith above nationalism and strive for greatness rooted in God's infinite and unconditional love, not a nation's past. We'll wrap up with personal reflections and broader societal critiques, highlighting the tension between national identity and spiritual integrity. Tune in for this compelling conversation that underscores the ultimate greatness found in God's kingdom and His unconditional love. Today I'm sitting down with esteemed golf coach Josh Nichols to talk about the importance of finding balance in the golf world. Josh, with his rich competitive background and notable runner-up finish at the 2017 US Mid-Amateur, opens up about the unexpected turns in tournament play and the psychological preparation needed to handle curveballs. Balancing the demands of family life with his passion for golf, he shares how he's adjusted his approach to the sport, redefined success, and continues to find joy in the game even when time on the course is limited. We also discuss the value of structured practice and being fully present during training, as well as how to take full advantage of coaching to achieve peak performance. We then give our thoughts on managing fear, anxiety, and identity as a golfer. Finally, we talk about the importance of maintaining healthy relationships both on and off the course, and confront the fear of embarrassment that so often holds athletes back from maximizing their potential. Since we talked for way too long in last week's episode, Josh is back for the second installment (of three) of the 100 episode celebration! We begin talking about some adventures our freshman year, including a vampiric professor, a singular snore that still haunts Josh and a sad case of mistaken identity. Next, Josh runs some fact checks on Kyle about past segments of the show- and they turn Kyle's childhood on its head. Then Josh presents Kyle with some out of context (NA)CP quotes and Kyle has no idea what they're about- there was even one too risque to include on the show! Next, Josh digs into his (literal) bag of tricks, which catalyzes what Kyle says may be his favorite moment ever on the show! We bring it to a close with the story of the literal worst roommate ever- so if you have a bad roommate, listen to this episode to make yourself feel better!
For the literal 100th time, welcome back to the show! Today I'm joined by my longtime friend (but only recent friend of the show), Josh Nichols. You don't want to miss the feat of endurance, dedication and absurdity that led to him being the one chosen to share in this momentous episode. We tell a couple of old stories, including the time Josh tried to bamboozle a gas station and a pseudonymous encounter from 11 years ago! We also do a segment looking back on Josh's perception of Kyle's right and (allegedly) wrong opinions. Of course, this leads down a rabbit trail talking about the time Josh tried to conquer one of the world's largest airports on foot and the hilarity and romance (?) that ensued! This episode is packed until the very end as we introduce the next piece of (NA)CP merch and engage in the clumsiest sign-off ever!
In this episode, Josh Nichols (@joshlukenichols) of The Mental Golf Show talks about his journey in golf. Josh's dad introduced him to golf at a young age and Josh eventually secured a spot at Appalachian State. After college, he stayed amateur but eventually wanted to become professional. Despite missing cuts and almost making it to the U.S. Open, Josh remained focused on the process and continued to work hard. He made it to the finals of the U.S. Mid-Am and finished runner-up. After some time, he decided to focus on helping other golfers with Foundations Mental Performance (https://www.foundationsmp.com/).Mental Golf Show: https://open.spotify.com/show/1RyN6bw9ZqLHTKNBG3TIJ4---Follow us:Twitter - @TournamentCodeInstagram - @thetournamentcodeYouTube - The Tournament CodeHosted by: Cooper Collins (@coopercollins99) and Daniel Hamrin (@DanielHamrin)---(02:36) - struggles with early tournament play(03:38) - lack of direction in golf(07:11) - playing golf at competitive level(12:19) - college golf struggles(14:36) - golf plateau and progression(18:21) - struggling after college golf(23:58) - intense golf training regimen(25:31) - practicing golf efficiently(29:02) - quality over quantity in practice(33:44) - focusing on the process(36:55) - psycho-stats for golf(40:08) - efficiently chopping down trees(45:29) - fun mental fundamental skills(48:39) - journaling for self-awareness(50:58) - the power of the brain

This week, Aleen is joined by Nickelodeon legend and author of his new book Happy People Are Annoying, Josh Peck! The episode kicks off with Aleen and Josh reminiscing on their childhoods and that time a few years ago when they were both on an influencer trip in Mexico together (!?). Josh then tells us about his book, which includes lessons that he learned from being the “chubby funny kid” (aka Josh Nichols on Drake & Josh) and how losing 100+ pounds is something that no one can seem to get over. Then, we chat about life lessons that Josh hopes to teach his son and how standing in his own way caused him to miss out on some career opportunities (like a part in one of the most iconic movies of all time). Finally, Josh and Aleen confess their favorite shows growing up. Everyone remembers Summer Sanders right?
