In this episode of Ambition. Unleashed. Sara Moore and Guest host Justin Temblett-Wood look into how leaders can take an approach of seeking exploration over the need for certainty. A willingness to believe in planning, but not plans, will free leaders from self-imposed prisons that restrict their ability to act and react in uncertain times. It requires bravery to step away from apparent certainty, and insight to understand that certainty is built on context and interpretation rather than reality. If leaders can throw off these shackles and embrace exploration and experimentation, then they will be well-equipped to prepare for, and benefit from, the unexpected and thrive rather than just survive in volatile times.

Kevin O'Leary (AKA Mr. Wonderful) might be the world's favorite (and most outspoken) investor. You've probably seen him on Shark Tank, where he's doing deals with startups, putting overconfident entrepreneurs in their place, and often making boring products into billion-dollar companies. Kevin has the Midas touch, or at least it seems that way on television. Still, he doesn't shy away from mentioning failures and the enormous lessons he's learned that eventually led him to make hundreds of millions of dollars. But before Kevin was Mr. Wonderful, he was just Kevin, the local ice cream scooper who learned a hard lesson about being an employee. After college, Kevin started a production business, which eventually led him to create The Learning Company, a $4.2 billion business that allowed Kevin to enter into a new stage of wealth. Since then, he's been aggressively investing in (and building) private companies inside and out of Shark Tank. And after investing so heavily and working so hard, Kevin knows EXACTLY what makes a company (and investment) succeed or fail. Today, we get a glimpse inside Kevin's personal investment portfolio, the three things he thinks EVERY entrepreneur should have to make it big, and why diversification is one of the most CRUCIAL ways to build and protect your wealth. You'll also hear how to invest in startups like Kevin does, why Kevin makes big bets on women entrepreneurs, and how he's investing during today's recessionary environment. In This Episode We Cover Kevin's investment portfolio exposed and which assets he's all-in on The difference between an entrepreneur and an employee and why Kevin only worked one job Why you MUST start tracking your income and expenses unless you want to remain broke The three things EVERY investor/entrepreneur needs to make it big Why building a portfolio beats investing in single stocks, companies, or ideas The government program that could pay you hundreds of thousands if you own a business How to start investing in startups and small businesses like Kevin does on Shark Tank And So Much More! Patrick: We are based in London and we do have an office, but we have engineers in Portugal and Ireland, and not all members of the team come into the office regularly there have been a number of learnings arising from that remote experience, and also some things that have come out of our values. We are of course a learning company and so we want the team to be learning all the time and to be developing and growing. So we have a very robust system of feedback, situation, behavior, impact, and suggested improvement. And every member of the team who has a 1 to 1 is expected to give that. And it goes both ways. It goes up to the CEO as well as down to the most junior member of the team. And when the CEO gets a tough piece of feedback, when I do, the first thing I do is share it with the whole team publicly. This is the feedback I got and these are the steps that I'm going to take. And the value of that is that other members of the team can look at that and they know two things. Number one, nobody's scared of feedback in this company because, whoa, he just got some really tough feedback there and he just shared it and he didn't have to. So, wow, that's great. And number two, Oh, I do that sometimes. That applies to me, too. And so by making it public, everyone in the team can benefit instead of just the one person who received it. And crucially, when other members of the team see that they are not emotionally involved so they can dispassionately look at it and go, okay, well, that's interesting. And they can learn from it in a way that when they receive the feedback yourself, you might be upset, it might be difficult. Yeah, but when you put it out there, it has an amazing power to diffuse the emotional element and supercharge the whole team's learning. And this is something which when new members of the team joined and they heard that this is the way that we do things, there was an attitude of, okay, well we'll see. And then the first time they actually see it happen, it's like, Oh my God, they really mean it. But you know what? If your leadership team and that's obviously me as a co-founder, the chief exec, if your leadership team believes in a growth mindset of personal development and change and in radical transparency, then this is the way to go. And this idea that we must be able to fail and screw up and not just admit to failing and screwing up, but actually embrace it and say, here's what I learned. Everyone loops back to what I was saying before about how the education system is really bad at this, because in education if you get something wrong, you failed. That's a bad thing. But in life, if you can only learn from it, then getting things wrong is never a failure. It's learning, it's growth. Yeah. And that's who we want to be as a company because that's the values we want to represent to our users and our customers. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Patrick Cootes Website: https://www.mindstone.com/ Crunchbase: https://www.crunchbase.com/person/patrick-cootes Twitter: @patrickcootes
In 2015 Mike Winnet started U.K.-based Learning Heroes after recognizing that most e-learning programs were long and boring. Winnet saw an opportunity to transform the industry by creating short, engaging, animated training courses. Winnet started by trying to sell his courses to job seekers, but when his efforts failed, he pivoted to selling to companies. Instead of a few hundred dollars a year from job seekers, selling to companies meant he was getting a few thousand dollars a year. The switch from B2C to B2B worked, and in less than three years, Winnet grew his company to around £2 million in annual recurring revenue, which was when he was approached by Litmos, a learning management software provider. Winnet sold Learning Heroes to Litmos for approximately four times revenue.

Kevin O'Leary Kevin O'Leary was born to a middle class family in 1954. The combination of Kevin's mother's family heritage as merchants and his father's Irish charisma truly meant that O'Leary was born for business. Kevin learned most of his business intuition from his mother. She taught him key business and financial insights from an early age. These became Kevin's core philosophies, and the pillars upon which he would one day build his empire. After getting his MBA, he founded Special Event Television, an independent production company producing such original sports programming as The Original Six, Don Cherry's Grapevine and Bobby Orr and the Hockey Legends. In 1986, O'Leary founded SoftKey Software Products (later called The Learning Company), the first software company to apply the principles of consumer goods marketing to the software industry. SoftKey grew quickly as the price of personal computers declined, and millions of American families began to buy software for education and entertainment. In 2003, O'Leary co-founded Storage Now, a leading developer of climate controlled storage facilities. Today, O'Leary leads the O'Leary Financial Group – a group of companies that includes O'Shares ETFs, O'Leary Publishing and a continually growing roster of other businesses. He is also the founder and Chief Sommelier of O'Leary Fine Wines, an award-winning wine label, as well as a member of Boston's 107-year old Hamilton Trust. In addition to Shark Tank, O'Leary co-hosted Discovery Channel's Project Earth television series that explored the financial implications of global climate change, and he is a regular contributor on CNBC. Kevin is an avid guitarist, photographer and author. He has written three bestselling books, including Cold Hard Truth on Men, Women and Money, and most recently, Cold Hard Truth on Family, Kids and Money. Screen Heat Miami Screen Heat Miami (SHM) is hosted by veteran Miami based producers Kevin Sharpley and JL Martinez and each week covers the latest trends in the film, tv, and entertainment industry, including interviews with global and local industry leaders, all told from a "Miami" point of view.

Key Takeaways [3:15] With Margaret’s diverse career, the one common theme that connects it all together is her passion for creativity. [5:10] You can’t measure a lot of things, and in the business world, what can't be measured gets “thrown out.” However, critical skills like creativity are essential and not easily measurable. [7:35] There’s such a pride in efficiency in business. It’s been this way since the industrial revolution. [12:35] Margaret agrees with Jim and Jan that the leaders she’s seen are naturally curious people. [15:10] Margaret shares some of the “soft” characteristics needed to get a team stronger and better than before. [18:00] Successful teams need to invest a lot of time getting to know one another. [21:20] People are more afraid of losing power/control than accountability in a team. [22:35] The more frightened an employee is, the worse they’ll perform, and they certainly won’t be creative. Organizations are still using these outdated fear tactics. [25:55] Margaret wished someone had told her in her younger days, “to not take it personally,” especially at the beginning of her career. [26:55] Something might be personal, but if you respond to it like it isn’t, then you’re in a much better position. [29:25] Reality TV really skews reality. It’s geared to show us the worst ways to team up. [31:50] When you act like a superstar, you end up alienating everyone who could have made you a superstar. [34:25] If you’re the person who speaks all the time in meetings. Just keep quiet during one of them and observe what happens. [38:00] Most organizations sit inside a vast ecosystem that you do not have any influence over. That doesn’t mean you’re absolutely helpless in your career, though. [42:10] We are currently sitting in an inequality crisis and an unemployment crisis. We have to think long-term or else we won’t survive. [44:55] You can think about impact and likelihood, but you can’t actually put physical numbers or “data” against it because it won’t mean anything when the final result comes. [48:35] Listener challenge: Contribute greater than you consume. Quotable Quotes “It’s like we can’t believe anything unless we’ve measured it.” “Many of the things we need the most are fundamentally immeasurable.” “Creativity is immeasurable.” “What can you tell me that I don’t know?” “We’re so keen to control things that we reduce them in our own heads.” “I think we have to recognize in a team, part of what you owe to the team is bring something that no one else in the team has. That’s how the team gets stronger.” “At the beginning of one’s career, and when one is young, everything is personal. When you don’t take it personally, you’re in a position to respond so much better.” “Hyper-competitive people generally do very poorly in life. They do poorly because they don’t make friends, they don’t have allies, and they generally don’t fit into networks.” Resources Mentioned Sponsored by: Pass-life.com. Coupon Code: Duty. The 12th season of ABC's Shark Tank kicks off Friday, October 16. In the premiere episode, a father and his 15-year-old son from Cincinnati, Ohio, help the Sharks get creative while sharing their solution for storing paint efficiently. Two tech-savy entrepreneurs from Somerville, Massachusetts, put the pedal to the metal when they show off their portable electric vehicle charger. A husband and wife from Milltown, New Jersey, think they can smell success as they pitch their product designed to keep garments safe from bacteria and odor, while an entrepreneur from Portland, Oregon, tries to convince the Sharks he brought blankets into the 21st century. Blake Mycoskie -- a serial entrepreneur, philanthropist and best-selling author most known for founding TOMS Shoes -- is the person behind the idea of One for One®, a business model that helps a person in need with every product purchased. A simple idea grew into a global movement: While traveling in Argentina in 2006, Mycoskie witnessed the hardships faced by children growing up without shoes. His solution to the problem was simple yet revolutionary: create a for-profit business that was sustainable and not reliant on donations. Mycoskie’s vision soon turned into the simple business idea that provided the powerful foundation for TOMS. Since its inception, TOMS Shoes has provided almost 96 million pairs of shoes to children around the world. Mycoskie started the Social Entrepreneurship Fund to help early startups with core social missions get off the ground with much-needed funding. Since then, he has invested in over 25 social enterprises. This past spring, he co-founded his newest company,Madefor, a 10-month program that applies the principles of modern neuroscience, psychology and physiology to make the brain and body better. Created alongside scientists from Stanford, Harvard and other top universities, Madefor helps people learn and sustain positive habits and practices that have the greatest impact on their lives. Kevin O'Leary received an extensive education abroad from Cambodia, Cyprus, Tunisia, Ethiopia, France and Switzerland. After earning his Master of Business Administration, he founded Special Event Television - which created original sports programs such as The Original Six and Bobby Orr and the Hockey Legends. In 1986, O'Leary founded the Softkey Software Products (later renamed The Learning Company), the first software company to apply the principles of consumer goods to software. By 1998, O'Leary's company was the undisputed world leader in educational, reference and home productivity software - which Mattel acquired in 1999 for $4.2 billion. In 2003, O'Leary co-founded Storage Now, a leading developer of climate-controlled storage facilities. Operating in 11 cities, it was soon acquired by Storage REIT in March of 2007 for $110 million. Today, Kevin leads the O'Leary Finanacial Group, a group of companies that include O'Shares ETF's, O'Leary Publishing and an ever-growing roster of other businesses. He is also the founder and head sommelier of award-winning wine label, O'Leary Wines. Kevin is a guitarist, photographer, and best-selling author.

The most important thing is to have an AI-enable infrastructure. It sounds very boring, but that was the learning that I got from the bank as well. It’s actually very easy for us to build the model, but what took a long time was to have the AI infrastructure that enables us to do so. Per: The most important thing is to have an AI-enable infrastructure. It sounds very boring, but that was the learning that I got from the bank as well. It’s actually very easy for us to build the model, but what took a long time was to have the AI infrastructure that enables us to do so. Ginette: I’m Ginette. Curtis: And I’m Curtis. Ginette: And you are listening to Data Crunch. Curtis: A podcast about how data and prediction shape our world. Ginette: A Vault Analytics production. Ginette: Before we get into this episode, let’s bring you behind the scenes at Data Crunch. We’re going to show you what we’ve learned about your tastes so far. According to the podcast analytics, which are still rudimentary and can only tell us so much, you really liked our last episode with DataOps. You also enjoyed the "No PhD Necessary" episode, the "How Artificial Intelligence Might Change Your World" episode. Almost all of you have loved the history of data science series. In fact, the third one in the series is our most popular episode in terms of how much of the show you listen to. But in terms of sheer listening numbers, the Hilary Mason episode, titled "The Complex World of Data Scientists and Black-Box Algorithms," tops our charts, with the Ran Levi episode, titled "Deep Learning—A Powerful Tool with a Name that Means Nothing," coming in second place. What this seems to tell us is you like interesting data history, you like interesting projections into the future, and you like learning practical ways you can be successful with data projects. But since the podcast analytics are still rudimentary, we want to hear if our conclusions are correct. So if you want to steer our future seasons, let us know what you want to hear more about by filling out a short survey. Just go to datacrunchpodcast.com/survey, and we would love to hear from you! Today we talk to the cofounder and CEO of a Danish company that employs machine learning to gather insights on what content on your website leads people to take action. If you’re looking into building a company using artificial intelligence or machine learning, this episode will be of particular interest to you because he talks about the impetus for his idea, some tools he used to build his product, some challenges, how he hired his team, when he uses or discards algorithms, and how he packages his product. And you can even try a free version of his product, which he mentions at the end of the show. Per Damgaard Husted: My name is Per Damgaard Husted. I'm the founder and CEO of Canecto. Canecto is a new way of doing web analytics based on machine learning, and the reason we do machine learning is because we want to understand the intention of the users so that we can predict how they are interacting on the website. We focus a lot on how content influences people to make decisions on a website, so it sort of compliments the user journey that you have and the UX and the SEO, but we focus on the content. Curtis: So how did Per come up with this idea of extracting insights from users’ interaction with content? Per: The background was that actually I needed this tool. I was a manager in one of the big Danish banks, and I was in charge of the online banking elements, and I got a lot of traffic, or we got a lot of traffic statistics about what's going on, but I didn't really know anything about that users’ intent. I wanted to make our website better. I wanted to understand what motivates them. I wanted to understand what content we produced. We produced a lot of content in the bank, and we had no tools that could explain how the users’ interaction with the content drove them to take specific a...
Jack Smyth, The Learning Company and Add-On Software Jack Smyth was the first CEO of The Learning Company, the educational software publisher best known for Reader Rabbit and Rocky's Boots. He was also involved with Add-On Software, a company that sold CP/M software for several computer platforms, including the Atari 8-bit line. Steve Cavin: Minotaur, Juggles' House, Juggles' Rainbow Steve Cavin started at Cromenco where he built computer kits and tested hardware. Later he wrote several programs for the Atari 8-bit computers: Minotaur, which was published by Atari Program Exchange — it first appeared in the fall 1981 APX catalog; and the Atari versions of Juggles' House and Juggles' Rainbow, educational games published by The Learning Company. He also wrote “The Five Letters", a hangman-style game that - so far - I haven't been able to find online. This interview took place April 22, 2016. "He looked at the screens and said, "Those don't look like the test programs that we normally use," and I said 'Well, they're not. I wrote my own. ... They're better than the other ones.'" John Powers, Atari Director of Software Development John Powers was co-founder of The Authorship Resource, the company that created all of the software for the CyberVision 2000 computer. From 1980 to 1982 he worked at Atari as Director of Software Development for personal computers. While he was there, he wrote three pieces of software for Atari Program Exchange: Newspaper Route Management Program, Computerized Card File, and Cosmatic Atari Development Package. He was later VP of Research and Development at educational software publisher The Learning Company. This interview took place on February 2, 2016. Teaser quotes: "Because of the Warner connection, coming from the movie business, I think they were under the impression that with a lot of money, we just hire a lot pf people, we can make this work. And it never quite happened." "My son had a newspaper route. So I said 'You know, there's a lot better way we can do this. I think we can use the Atari 800 to simplify some of this.'"
