fWotD Episode 2713: Tony Hawk's Underground Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Tuesday, 8 October 2024 is Tony Hawk's Underground.Tony Hawk's Underground is a 2003 skateboarding video game and the fifth entry in the Tony Hawk's series after Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4. It was developed by Neversoft and published by Activision in 2003 for the GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Game Boy Advance. In 2004, it was published for Microsoft Windows in Australia and New Zealand as a budget release.Underground is built upon the skateboarding formula of previous Tony Hawk's games: the player explores levels and completes goals while performing tricks. The game features a new focus on customization; the player, instead of selecting a professional skater, creates a custom character. Underground adds the ability for players to dismount their boards and explore on foot. The plot follows the player character and their friend Eric Sparrow as the two become professionals and grow apart. The game was developed with a theme of individuality which was manifested in the extensive character customization options, the presence of a narrative, and the product's characterization as an adventure game. Real world professional skateboarders contributed their experiences to the plot. Upon release, the game was a major critical and commercial success, with reviewers praising its wide appeal, soundtrack, customization, multiplayer, and storyline. The graphics and the controls for driving vehicles and walking were less well received. Underground's PlayStation 2 version had sold 2.11 million copies in the United States by December 2007. A sequel, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, followed in 2004.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:11 UTC on Tuesday, 8 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Tony Hawk's Underground on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kimberly.

(edited) as a kid playing game was for nights and winter when it was raining but every time i had my friends over it was always a compitition to see who could get the best line or the highest score. I remember several weekends we would even carry our tvs to each others houses and have multiple games going at once. pizza tons of soda and nothing but laughs. bozo — Yesterday at 10:14 AM I was very late to the party with THPS - I only got into the series around 2016 as I was building up my OG Xbox library and had 2x/3/4 on hand to see what all the fuss was about. Going in, I was expecting it to be the kind of game that hasn't aged well; one whose reputation was heavily embellished by nostalgia for the era it represented. Needless to say, I was very, very wrong. THPS totally holds up. And the gameplay mechanics on offer are not only ridiculously deep, but fluid and cohesive in a way few other games can match even today. Chaining tricks into manuals into ramps into reverts is an absolutely sublime gameplay loop that never gets old. I'm always bothered whenever THPS gets lumped into the generic "Sports" categorization, when in reality it has way more in common with combo-oriented action games like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta than say, Madden. I think that's why it quickly became one of my all-time favorite series despite completely missing out on them when they were in the zeitgeist. Oh yeah, and the soundtrack? It shreds. As a huge pop-punk fan I couldn't ask for more. I'll never forgive Activision-Blizzard for shutting down Vicarious Visions and cancelling the THPS 3+4 remaster. 1+2 is arguably the best remaster ever made, and is easily the apex of the entire franchise, despite the moribund state the franchise was in for the previous 15 years. WV Uncommonplace Podcats, hosted by Jr Sparrow, takes a deep-dive into the gaming industry and explores the reasons why popular companies in the market no longer make licensed games. In this podcast, Jr takes a closer look at Activision, who used to produce and license many successful games in the 2000s but stopped in 2013, leaving listeners to wonder why they discontinued production. Some of their popular games included Transformers: Devastation, Spiderman: Web of Shadows, and Deadpool. It is revealed that the poor quality of games and lack of success in the licensing department led to them getting rid of their licenses, making the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game the only game that seemed to do well. It is also mentioned that despite Activision's focus on their successful Call of Duty series, they have decided to double down on this single property and have raised their game prices. This may potentially be due to the lack of creative Marvel and Crash Bandicoot games. At the conclusion of the podcast, Jr Ravens asks Activision why they have stopped making licensed games and instead focus on games with DLC and micro transactions. He believes this generation lacks knowledge of these games and that Activision should re-introduce these complete games to fans and make them fall in love with gaming again. Listeners should get ready to enter a world of gaming analysis and gain an understanding of the licensed games industry. Activision is one of the oldest and most well-known video game publishers in the industry, and over the years they have released a wide range of licensed games based on popular franchises from movies, TV shows, and other media. Here are some of the most notable examples of Activision's licensed games throughout their history: "Ghostbusters" (1984) - One of Activision's earliest licensed games was based on the popular movie franchise "Ghostbusters." The game was released for a variety of platforms, including the Atari 2600, Commodore 64, and NES. "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (1989) - Activision published several games based on the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" franchise throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, including the popular NES game "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game." "Spider-Man" (2000) - This game, developed by Neversoft, was one of the first truly successful licensed superhero games. It was praised for its faithful depiction of the Spider-Man character and his world, as well as its innovative web-slinging mechanics. "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" (1999) - While not technically a licensed game, "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" was heavily influenced by the skateboarding subculture that had been popularized in movies and TV shows. The game was a huge success and spawned numerous sequels. "Call of Duty" (2003) - Although not a licensed game in the traditional sense, the "Call of Duty" franchise is often based on real-world conflicts and historical events. The series has become one of the biggest and most successful video game franchises of all time. "Transformers" (2007) - Based on the popular toy and cartoon franchise, "Transformers" was a third-person shooter that allowed players to control giant transforming robots in battle. The game was praised for its faithful depiction of the Transformers characters and world. "Skylanders" (2011) - This franchise, which featured a series of toy figures that could be placed on a portal and brought to life in a video game, was a massive success for Activision. It spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and helped popularize the "toys-to-life" genre. These are just a few examples of Activision's long history of licensed games. Other notable franchises that Activision has worked on include "X-Men," "James Bond," "Guitar Hero," "Star Trek," and "The Walking Dead," among many others. Part 2 w/ andyTHPS: we finish our talk about his career with Neversoft, work on Epic Skater, working at Vicarious Visions, and beyond. We finish with questions from the THPS Community for andyTHPS. andyTHPS is cited by many as one of the greatest THPS players of all time. He is well-known as one of the earliest players to be exceptional at the game. He was recognized for his skill by Neversoft and then invited to test on the series and later was hired by the studio to be part of the development team. He became a level designer in later titles, putting his touch on East LA, High School, and parts of Washington DC, among others. He worked on several of the Guitar Hero games and was with Neversoft all the way through them merging with Infinity Ward. He would then go on to develop his own skateboarding games in Epic Skater 1 and 2. Later he started as a consultant for Vicarious Visions on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 then became a full-fledged member of their development team! Andy also has a super successful channel on Twitch where he plays multiple THPS titles, other “extreme” sports games, and the drums.

WE ARE NOT ALONE in having bad breath! Tic Tacs are here to freshen our planet with a delightful minty taste. But seriously folks, WTF is going on with the startling images of mysterious tic tac shapes appearing on the US NAVY ship based radar, and on the infrared VIDEO SCREENS of their fighter planes, and in front of the eyes pilots. These images have, incredibly and almost uniquely in the history of UFOs, been featured in the NEW YORK TIMES and on the legendary CBS News program, 60 MINUTES, and of course on social media all the way from here to Pluto. MICK WEST is the host of the TALES FROM THE RABBIT HOLE podcast and author of ESCAPING THE RABBIT HOLE, and who's YouTube channel is essential viewing for anyone interested testing claims of extraordinary phenomena from the fringe, including 9/11 conspiracy theories, contrails, and UFO's. We're grateful for his taking time to walk up the ramp into our hovering WTIF studio and conduct an important thought experiment with us: What The IF these really are flying craft performing feats beyond not only our known TECHNOLOGY, but even beyond our current understanding of PHYSICS itself? Science advances through dogged observation of BIZARRE phenomena and using experimentation, and rumination, to expand our understanding of nature. And it's a two way street, this IF, because it's also a way of evaluating eyewitness testimony and hard data. We learn all kinds of fun and fascinating science along the way: physics, biology, aerodynamics, electromagnetism and more. And we discuss some of the most prominent eyewitness testimony, including that of Navy pilots and radar technicians who have sat down with Mick over the past few years in extensive interviews, providing him with a trove of details about what they remember from these events, some going as far back as 2004. There's also tons of cool science to be learned from the examination of the process of understanding eyewitness testimony, too. How do we evaluate these stories, especially when they come from such heroes as those who have devoted their lives to defending the nation (and perhaps even the planet)? Put on your helmet, strap into the cockpit, fire those afterburners and let's go check out some SPOOKY ACTION at an all-too-close distance... because we need to know, and no matter what the outcome, the process of pursuing this quest brings us all kinds of super awesome science! --- Mick West is a co-founder and former Technical Director of Neversoft Entertainment and helped create the billion-dollar franchise: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. After leaving Neversoft, Mick spent time coding, writing, and learning to fly a small plane. This eventually led him to his interest in the "chemtrails" conspiracy theory, and the creation of the site ContrailScience.com. Mick now runs Metabunk.org, a forum of and about the polite debunking of theories from 9/11 conspiracies to the Flat Earth. His first book, Escaping the Rabbit Hole, draws upon his debunking experience and research to provide a set of tools and information that people can use to help their friends find their way out of the rabbit hole of conspiracy thinking. We got there!! This is a monumental episode, sheetheadz! Mick West is the founder of Metabunk.com, author of the fantastic book Escaping the Rabbit Hole, three-time Joe Rogan Experience guest, and FRIGGIN' TONY HAWK: PRO SKATER INVENTOR! I mean, he was the technical director at Neversoft during the first five Tony Hawk games, so he was instrumental in making them. Which is my favorite part of his resume, because I'll always be 11 years old essentially. But it's also cool that he's been on Rogan three times, even though Rogan is kind of a damaging presence, especially at the moment. Mr. West is really cool and you should read his book ESCAPING THE RABBIT HOLE and be his friend on Twitter. He's @MickWest there. That book talks about how people get out of believing in… nonsense. We talk about other stuff for the first 40 minutes or so, so if you're more interested in the conspiracy stuff than anything else, I recommend the episode of the H3 podcast he was on about a year ago. But listen to this first. Actually, that's where I got the clips of Mr. West I used in his theme, which I'm calling “Best Mick West in the West.” Hope that's okay, H3—it was somewhat recent, and he was using y'all's profesh stude. Mick co-founded the video game development company Neversoft Entertainment in July 1994 with Joel Jewett and Chris Ward. Working at Neversoft for nine years as Technical Director: he was heavily involved in programming the first five games of the Tony Hawk's series. His favorite contributions were doing the initial player control for THPS. He was responsible for general technological developments at Neversoft during those first nine years, which was quite a bit of stuff! He also worked on Apocalypse and Spider Man for Neversoft. As we have heard from other THPS Podcast guests: Mick is largely responsible for creating the famous gameplay “feel” in THPS. Since retiring as a video game programmer, Mick has created the websites Contrail Science and Metabunk, and he investigates and debunks pseudoscientific claims and conspiracy theories such as chemtrails and UFOs. His first book is Escaping the Rabbit Hole. How to Debunk Conspiracy Theories Using Facts, Logic, and Respect. He further hosts a podcast Tales from the Rabbit Hole where he interviews “conspiracy culture” guests.

This interview was a personal one for me as I've actually been a follower of Ludvig's content for a while now. Going back to his YouTube channel, Icebears 4ever, I found his Tony Hawk video game content something I genuinely related to and enjoyed watching. I stumbled upon his channel years ago when I was revisiting an online wikia site dedicated to the series as well (of course, Tony Hawk's Games Wiki) in which I had a hand in writing articles for in my freshmen and sophomore years of high school. Once revisiting that site after graduating high school, I had a hunch to look up THPS videos, which led me to Ludvig's channel. After being a subscriber of his for a while, he started to announce his plans for working on a documentary about the series - to see it unfold the way that it has with it's righteous unveiling last year in August was certainly something to see for all Tony Hawk's Pro Skater fans everywhere. Many thanks to Ludvig for his time and conversation! Shout out to Tony Hawk and Neversoft for the memories!! Promotional artwork for this episode provided by Juan Sebastian Garzon.
Chris Rausch worked for Neversoft as a Game Designer for Pro Skater 1 through Underground 1. Many will recognize him by one of his nicknames: Team Chicken: think: TC's Roof Gap in School 2. Chris is currently the Creative Director for Nicalis, and previous co-founder of Supervillain Studios. He is a longstanding vet of the games industry, starting as a teenager with Virgin Interactive and 21holding his first lead design role at the age of 19. He played a massive role in the work that brought the Tony Hawk franchise to life with Neversoft. Chris has seen the entire scope of the games industry from high successes of massive triple-a games, to the rough and trying times of a scrappy start-up. Chris also was involved with and interviewed for the Pretending I'm A Superman THPS documentary.

Last Friday Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 released and we've all had the bird man on the brain. So, to celebrate the return of one of the best sports games ever made we decided to talk about why Tony Hawk's Pro Skater matters to gaming and culture more widely. In this episode, we drop into the long history of the franchise, its development, and how Tony Hawk aimed to create a video game that immersed the player in a real representation of skate culture. We talk about what happened when Neversoft closed and we also break down how Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is marking a triumphant return. But one of the things we didn't know would happen is a deep conversation about representation and how despite its predominantly white roster, the Pro Skater franchise never felt like it excluded people of color, specifically with its music from De La Soul to Ozomatli and its in-depth create-a-skater feature. We talk about the genre-defining mechanics and of course discuss the wide-ranging impact of the game's soundtrack and how it impacted our own personal tastes. Oh, and how Matt still dresses like his create-a-skater to this day.
Show Notes:On this episode of The Provise Project we talk to the Creative Director of the first 4 Tony Hawk Pro Skaters in the early 2000s Chris Rausch. We dive into the world of building video games from her early days at Virgin Interactive and then the nitty gitty conversation about the juggernaut what was Tony Hawk Pro Skater.Viewer questions were on this podcast with niche details about all the Tony Hawk gamesLinks Mentioned:Tony hawk pro skater gameFollow Us:Include links to where listeners can find you online:Our Apple Link to SubscribeSubscribe on Simplecast PodcastsTwitterInstagram

So here we are, doing everything we can… and chatting THPS music with the pros! We’re so excited to have Ralph D’Amato (producer of the Tony Hawk series through Project 8 and also a new documentary about the series) and Blake Hester (writer, musician, and THUG lover) join MinnTrax to talk about the first two Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater soundtracks, how Neversoft picked such great songs, how they were shaped by skate culture, and the impact they had on games and music tastes for generations to come. Then, with questions from the MinnTrax community, we learn about a song that didn’t make it onto the THPS soundtracks and why, who’d be perfect for one of those soundtracks today, and what each of our wrestling themes would be (because why not?). Ian interviews director Ludvig Gür and producer Ralph D'Amato about their wild new documentary, Pretending I’m A Superman: The Tony Hawk Video Game Story! In 1999, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater became an monster hit, spawning numerous sequels and helping to resurrect skateboarding in mainstream culture. The film catches up with Hawk and his daredevil friends, as well as the Neversoft creative team, to look at what this unexpected success meant to gamers, boarders, and the world at large. From the movie's surprising origins, to the impact the game had on the filmmakers, to the proliferation of video game-inspired documentaries, Ian and his guests dig into a doc that both exalts and explains the Pro Skater pop phenomenon.Note: In an early question, Ian mistakenly uses the phrase "video game culture", when he meant to say "skateboarding culture". Pretending I’m A Superman is now available On Demand via all major platforms. Also, Ian reviews the movie; invites you to watch the video version of the interview; and tells you about Varèse Sarabande’s Deluxe Edition double-LP of The Running Man soundtrack!Episode 572 is gleams the cube!Show Guide:Intro Music: 0:00 - 0:14Intro: 0:14 - 4:23Pretending I’m A Superman Trailer: 4:23- 6:09Pretending I’m A Superman Discussion: 6:09 - 29:42Outro Music: 29:42 - 29:57Keep up with the latest seat-kicking goodness by following, liking, rating, and subscribing to us on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, iTunes, Stitcher!
We're joined on this very special interview by producer of "Pretending I'm a Superman," the thrilling documentary about the Tony Hawk video game franchise, Ralph D'Amato. While working at Neversoft under Activision, Ralph was a producer on eight Tony Hawk games, including Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1-4. In the interview, we cover the making of the film, how producing a game differs from a documentary, the impact music had on the Tony Hawk franchise & how that translates to film & even his thoughts on the upcoming remakes. We even go behind the scenes on making the original games! Of course, we throw him into the rapid fire segment where he answers questions about cookies, vert skating & animated tv shows. Have you ever tied up a pair of Vans, grabbed your skateboard, and hit a sick Kickflip McTwist off a half-pipe into a 10-second grind on a hand rail? Peter and Cody have! Well, kind of. In this episode, we discuss two classic titles that inspired kids all across the world to try their hand at being their own sk8ter boi: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2! With a remake on the horizon, we felt it necessary to cover what might have been one of the most fun arcade skating experiences that has ever graced consoles across the world. Neversoft and Activision brought skateboarding to us in a whole new way, and with it, introduced us to some of the best (and worst) music we've ever had the pleasure (and pain) of listening to. We also ask you, the listeners, some very important questions! Be sure to respond over on Twitter! Forewarning: the music contained in this episode contains lyrics, some that may not be appropriate for kids to listen to. Listener discretion is advised! Thanks for checking us out. We discuss the rise of extreme sports, the sickest skate tricks we've ever pulled, and what a cool guy Tony Hawk seems to be. Spider-Man is my favourite superhero. Even if you ignore all of the "he's a normal guy trying to do the right thing/with great power comes great responsibility" stuff and just focus on superpowers, the guy is sick. Climbing walls, super strength, agility, and of course, web-slinging. He seems like he'd be perfect for video games. And unfortunately, that wasn't really the case for a long time. Then came Spider-Man for the PlayStation. Developed by Neversoft, Spider-Man initially released on the PlayStation in the summer of 2000. It later found it's way onto the Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast, but for me and most my friends, this game's practically a PlayStation exclusive. It's one of the games I most wanted to see on the PS Classic last year - although I didn't expect it because of licensing and the fact that the PS Classic is garbage - and aside from Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and the Tony Hawk series, it's one of the titles I most associate with Sony's first foray into the console world. (On a side note, Neversoft developed the Tony Hawk games along with Spider-Man. That's a pretty sick track record) You (obviously) play the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. You fight bad guys, climb walls, and yep, web-sling around New York. Kind of. Doctor Octopus and Carnage release a fog across the city, and it blocks out the lower half of New York for the duration of the game. Obviously a way to work within the limitations of the PlayStation's hardware capabilities (I assume anyway), you web-sling along the skyline of the city without ever seeing the streets, traffic, and people. It actually works really well, and doesn't take away from the game. Where this game truly shines, in my opinion, is it's story. It absolutely captures the feel of the modern Marvel movies, and the roster of characters that make appearances in Spider-Man is INSANE! Spider-Man, Venom (my other favourite. And they team up, which is the best!), Punisher, Captain America, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Carnage, Human Torch, Daredevil, Rhino; the list goes on and on. Stan Lee even shows up! I say it during the podcast this week, but nothing makes me happier than when I see a game developer truly cares, and it's obvious while playing this game that Neversoft set out to make something special. And they succeeded. An original story, incredible gameplay and graphics, and a little TLC, Spider-Man has it all. My buddy Tyler and I had a great time talking about one of the stand out (and occasionally forgotten) gems on the PlayStation. It's all about Spider-Man this week on 'Remember The Game?'!
In a shock turn of events public opinion has led Andy and Biddie to play a Tony Hawk’s game. Will it rekindle the passions of their youth or besmirch the memories they hold so dear?
