Vor ziemlich genau 3 Jahrzehnten hieß uns Ben Harper in seiner Welt willkommen. Sein Debut „Welcome to the Cruel World“ erschien am 8. Februar 1994 und führte uns nochmal vor Augen und Ohren, was wir eh schon wussten: Die Welt ist ein grausamer Ort. Die folgenden Albumtitel – ähnlich niederschmetternd: „Fight for Your Mind“ und „The Will to Death“.

So far this month, 139 animals have been brought to Minneapolis Animal Care and Control, a 57.7 percent increase from the same time in 2022. The shelter is overwhelmed by the influx of animals. In an effort to help them find homes, all adoption fees are currently waived. Kerem Yucel | MPR News Aretha looks on behind the kennel door at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control Center on Thursday. Unfortunately, many of the animals have been surrendered, according to shelter director Caroline Hairfield. There's been a 67.5 percent increase in owner surrenders so far this year compared with last year, with people citing housing as an issue. Shelter staff are doing their best to provide for the animals but, with the heightened demand and a lack of staff, community engagement coordinator Madison Weissenborn says she often loses sleep over their care. They're vaccinated, sterilized and microchipped. The current adoptable animals on the shelter's website do not reflect the increase of animals they have received in the past days. Hairfield said to call 311 if you want to make an appointment. Walk-ins are only available on Fridays but they will be expanding their hours in the future. If you're an animal lover but can't adopt, Weissenborn said the shelter is always looking for volunteers. MACC is located at  212 17th Ave. N. in Minneapolis and you can make an appointment here. Introduced to the industry by a random internship application to Visit Baltimore, Andreas Weissenborn began an unexpected career that left him with a continued passion for tourism. He is currently the Vice President of Research and Advocacy for Destinations International, and he leads the research and advocacy efforts of the entire organization with an eye toward developing data-driven tools to help destinations around the world tell their story. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Andreas Weissenborn shares his philosophy that DMOS are caretakers of the data and information on the visitor economy. He also dives into why tourism has become a community shared value and explains why DMOs should view their role as serving the people of their communities as a central priority. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Andreas shares a little about himself and the story of how he became interested in destination marketing Andreas' early role in information technology and database management and how that has an impact on his current work at Destinations International How DMOs can be the primary steward of data for their community What it means to be a community shared value, what Andreas' vision for Destinations International was, and how the pandemic accelerated the concept The importance of lexicon in how we describe things, why we need to change how we talk about ourselves to reframe our thinking around the role of the DMO Why leading with emotion rather than facts and figures is critical Where Andreas sees our most significant opportunities as destination marketing organizations in the post-pandemic world Making Data Meaningful The fundamental definition of effective research and analytics is taking massive swathes of data and making it comprehensible, easily understood, and applicable. Andreas shares his experience of working at Visit Baltimore and why he feels it was the start of the golden era of data analytics for Destination Marketing Organizations. He dives into why it is so critical to have individuals in the travel and tourism space who can help diagnose, dissect, and explain what this data does. That ability to translate bookings, data, or visitor spending into understandable information that is meaningful to stakeholders was where Andreas found his niche in the industry. And those skills still feed into the broader and greater mission of Destination Marketing Organisations. DMOs are Vital to the Community Destination Marketing Organizations are the stewards of the visitor economy, but they also serve their community. This is why it's so important to change how DMOs talk about themselves and how they get involved. Destination organizations are the most uniquely qualified entity for the next normal in representing a brand because the brand transcends the physical and virtual realm. DMOs are uniquely qualified because they're the only entity that can sit at the table with civic, social, cultural, and historical entities and bring everyone together. Next Steps for DMOs According to Andreas, destinations can take some tangible next steps to be successful. DMOs are often the most influential voice of a brand because of the reach of their website and their social media channels. They need a mission or a vision statement that reads in an emotional, storied way so visitors don't have to question who and what you are. DMOs also need to teach, train and advocate not only their entire staff but their entire membership so that everyone understands the value proposition and the work they do and is clear on why tourism matters for the community. Whether it's space travel or sustainable tonewood forests, I know the future of the acoustic guitar is bright. In this episode, I'll walk you through 5 HUGE reasons why the acoustic guitar is the chosen instrument of the future. This entire episode is dedicated to the future of the acoustic guitar. Specifically, why the acoustic guitar will be the champion instrument in the near and distant future. In addition, you'll hear about two guitars that I think are definitely guitars of the future. One of them is a Lowden Guitars' F50, which is truly futuristic because of the innovative tonewood combinations used on this guitar. In addition, I'll give you a review of the Fender Acoustasonic guitar, an instrument that has received a TON of hype...but is it worth it? Last but not least, you'll get the chance to listen to a friend of mine who went viral a couple months ago. His videos include him playing a Weissenborn guitar across the wilds of Montana. His name? Dan Dubuque . Just to give you a taste of what's to come for the acoustic guitar, here are my top 5 signs the acoustic guitar is the instrument of the future. Reason #5: Power or No-Power, There's POWERWhether you're plugged into an amp or not, the acoustic guitar can fill a room if it needs to. It's mobile and can be adaptable in a wide variety of situations. So if the distant future for some reason doesn't involve electricity, us acoustic guitar geeks we'll still be able to make music! If we do have power, there are plenty of effects and gear that can help sonically texture the acoustic guitar and innovate its sound. Reason #4: Band in a BoxWhile the guitar is useful for strumming and playing chords, you can actually pull so many different sounds and effects from your acoustic guitar. There are hundreds of different percussive tones that can be played on the acoustic guitar. Combine that with the different chord progressions, rhythms, and more...you suddenly have a guitar that is 100% a band in a box. Reason #3: SPACE TRAVELGood news, everyone! The acoustic guitar is safe for space travel! As we soar into the deep, unknown vasts of space, one astronaut acknowledges how primal and powerful music is — it's one of the most basic parts of our human identity. Astronaut Chris Hadfield proves it with his trusty Larrivee P-01 while he answered some questions in an interview he did from the space station! Reason #2: Material InnovationStarting with sustainable harvesting, there have been tons of fun advancements in sustainably harvesting tonewoods. Instead of clear-cutting or chopping down ancient trees, @Taylor Guitars cloned a maple tree that provided high-quality and reliable tonewood. Additionally, the folks at Emerald Guitars have been building insanely high-quality carbon fiber guitars. Reason #1: CommunityThroughout my life and career, I've noticed that the acoustic guitar has an uncanny ability to create community wherever it goes. As humans, we've needed community in the past, we need it now, and we'll need it in the future. As far as I can tell, no instrument is better suited to bring together folks like the acoustic guitar. I've been a part of the 2006-2007 record for the world's largest guitar lesson (1500 people). Being there was absolutely amazing and goes to show how incredible the community around acoustic guitar is. 10 years later, I held the Acoustic Life Festival in Bozeman, Montana. This was a festival where over 100 Tony's Acoustic Challenge members met to play together for a weekend...phew, that was something special! Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

Multi-instrumentalist and hero to me, David Lindley, joins me on the podcast this month in another 2-part epic conversation! Lindley is one of the great electric lap steel and Weissenborn players on the planet, and over the last 25 years has also deeply explored African, Arabic, Asian, Celtic, Malagasy, and Turkish music and incorporated it into his own recordings and shows. His early career took him from the psychadelic world-music genre bending band Kaleidoscope over to the UK where he toured and recorded with the incredible Terry Reid (almost the singer for Led Zep). Lindley returned to the US in the seventies to make his indelible mark on rock and pop music with many hit albums with Jackson Browne, before becoming one of rock's most in demand session musicians, lending his skills to the recorded works of Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby and Nash, Warren Zevon, and many others. After toying with success as a sideman, Lindley decided to instead devote himself to his own music and formed the now legendary El Rayo-X. Their records and shows were some of the most exciting music to come out of the States in the early 80’s. Lindley also collaborated with Ry Cooder on many of his classic soundtracks through the 80’s as well. Lindley then redefined himself as more of an acoustic player in the 90’s and performed solo and duo shows all over the world with Hani Nasser and Wally Ingram, releasing low budget recordings that had a huge impact on me, performing on the weissenborn, saz, oud and other instruments. It was a true thrill to spend some time with Mr. Dave, and I’m glad to present my conversation with him for you to enjoy. Join me next Wednesday for Part 2 of this episode!

Jesse Manley spent the past few years collaborating with Denver dance troupe Wonderbound. The Denver musician wrote music for five performances including "Dust," a piece on the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s. His songs reflect the folk and Americana music of that time. Manley and his band went on to record the music of "Dust" as an album, which they released last week. Prior to the album release show, Manley performed three songs from the record in the CPR Performance Studio. He also spoke with Jeremy Petersen about his history with Wonderbound, playing the Weissenborn slide guitar and reading up on the Dust Bowl for his latest work.
