The blog post Think about the last time you made a major career decision. I'm thinking of one of mine, in particular. Was it about leaving a job for a new one? Changing directions in your career altogether? Was it a debate about which of the job offers you would accept? How easy was that? How long did it take you? In hindsight, some of my career decisions took too long to play out. Afterward, my wife would ask, "Why didn't you do that sooner?" I'm also thinking of a major decision that was in the news today—it's been drawn out over the past few weeks, and it's a more important decision than one I've ever considered. During my career, one of the most helpful concepts I've learned about is "motivational interviewing." See more blog posts about this approach. This approach has roots in addiction counseling, developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick in the 1980s to help individuals struggling with substance abuse find their own motivations for change. Its principles can be applied far beyond addiction, proving invaluable in leadership and coaching. William R Miller, PhD, is one of the pioneers of motivational interviewing, a psychological technique that helps individuals overcome apathy and create change in their lives. Dr. Miller's research has become the standard practice in psychology, especially when clinicians are treating patients with addictive behaviors and patients who are recovering from depression that need help reigniting their personal motivation. His latest book, “8 Ways to Hope: Charting a Path through Uncertain Times,” which releases August 2024, takes lessons from Dr. Miller's research and applies them to the bridge between psychology and hope.   This episode of Menninger Clinic's Mind Dive podcast features Dr. Miller, accomplished psychologist and author, joining us for a conversation about hope and his findings on the psychological effects of optimism versus pessimism. Dr. Miller also shares a sneak peek into his latest work which explores the varying types of hope and how to foster self-efficacy during difficult times.   Dr. Miller was a clinical psychologist at the University of New Mexico for 30 years where he retired as emeritus distinguished professor psychology and psychiatry. The BJSM has collaborated with the PACC programme to develop this podcast and has invited Dr Tim Anstiss, an expert in this area, to explain some key behaviour change theory and motivational interviewing concepts in this conversation. Tim is a medical doctor specialising in behaviour change and wellbeing improvement. He trained as a trainer in motivational interviewing in the mid 90's and has trained thousands of health and care professionals, managers and coaches in Motivational Interviewing, health coaching, brief interventions and shared decision making. “The Physical Activity Clinical Champions or PACC programme is a national project delivering physical activity education to professionals working in healthcare to help get patients more physically active. Probablement, rien n'est plus pénible que de composer avec un individu peu motivé et peu engagé. Nous avons beau lui expliquer les raisons de devoir s'activer, il ne présente aucune envie de procéder au changement souhaité. Parfois, nos interventions produisent l'effet inverse et il semble même prendre plaisir à persister dans la direction opposée. Si vous avez déjà rencontré ce type de situation, il devient indispensable de connaître l'entretien motivationnel. Cette approche est déjà utilisée dans un grand nombre de contextes par plusieurs professionnels comme en médecine avec des patients devant perdre du poids ou arrêter de fumer, en éducation ou encore dans les programmes de réinsertion en milieu carcéral. Ces méthodes s'avèrent simples et à la portée de tous, mais demandent d'intervenir avec une grande discipline. Les mots ont de l'impact et il est important de tenir compte des étapes. Facilitative Parenting is a powerful thing. Dr. William R. Miller is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico, with over forty years of experience in teaching. Dr. Miller is a researcher and developer of the therapeutic model Motivational Interviewing. His many books include Motivational Interviewing: Helping People Change and Quantum Change: When Epiphanies and Sudden Insights Transform Ordinary Lives. Dr. Miller's latest book, Listening Well: The Art of Empathic Understanding, was released in January 2019. Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative conversation that strengthens a person's own motivation for and commitment to change. It is a client-centered therapy that addresses the common problem of uncertainty around change. It focuses on exploring and working through ambivalence and centers on motivational processes within the individual that help to process the change. This method differs from more externally-driven methods for motivating change as it does not impose change. Rather, Motivational Interviewing supports change in a way that is congruent with the personal own values and concerns. Having conflicted feeling about behavior change is considered a normal part of the change process. Motivational Interviewing is an interpersonal style, not at all restricted to formal counseling settings. It is a subtle balance of directive and client-centered components shaped by a guiding philosophy and understanding of what triggers change. Miller, PhD, the Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico presented the 2014 Ruth Knee Lecture on Spirituality and Social Work at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Miller wove together two major themes from his research career that illuminate the human potential for personal transformation. The first is motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative counseling style he developed in the 1980s to help clients with alcohol problems overcome their ambivalence about behavior change. The second theme is quantum change—his study of transformations of the “Ebenezer Scrooge” variety that are sparked by epiphanies or sudden insights. Miller, PhD, the Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico presented the 2014 Ruth Knee Lecture on Spirituality and Social Work at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Miller wove together two major themes from his research career that illuminate the human potential for personal transformation. The first is motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative counseling style he developed in the 1980s to help clients with alcohol problems overcome their ambivalence about behavior change. The second theme is quantum change—his study of transformations of the “Ebenezer Scrooge” variety that are sparked by epiphanies or sudden insights. Additionally, Ms. Stout is a California certified drug and alcohol counselor, level II (CADC-II), with international reciprocity (ICADC). Recently, Dee-Dee joined Project Pride, a California Prisoner Mother Program in Oakland, CA, as Clinical Program Manager. Ms. Stout is also part of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), having received her training in part from Dr. William R. Miller. Dee-Dee has received extensive specialized training in such additional areas as MI Supervisors training; SFBT; Relapse Prevention; Creative Inquiry; Stages of Change; CBT; Seeking Safety; CRAFT; Harm Reduction Psychotherapy; Client-Directed, Outcome-Oriented work (CDOI), and more.
