Birth Series. Episode #4 of 4. In his occupation as a swineherd, Jacob Nufer had performed countless genital surgeries on his pigs. He was an expert gelder. He was convinced he could deliver his child abdominally so that both his wife and child would survive. For this, there was no precedence. Most observers must have believed that Jacob was about to murder his wife and that his child might already be dead. Few people would have had confidence in his success. But Jacob was desperate. Using his gelding tools, Jacob made an incision in his wife's abdomen, with no anesthesia and rudimentary sanitation, to deliver his infant daughter. Shockingly, the historical record asserts that both mother and child survived the operation. Even more shocking, Elizabeth is recorded as having five more children, all delivered vaginally. Their baby born by cesarean also thrived. She lived to the ripe old age of 77. This is the first recorded incidence of a cesarean section performed where both the mother and child survived the procedure. Or is it? You'll have to keep listening to find out. Today we're discussing the surprisingly long history of cesarean birth in western medicine. Find transcripts and show notes at: www.digpodcast.org Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Charlotte Bishop opens up about her rare congenital disorder, while revealing her surprising discovery of a missing and underdeveloped reproductive system and her life-changing decision with dilated therapy.Terms used:Mayer Rokitansky Küster Hauser syndrome (MRKH) is a rare congenital disorder and abnormality of the female reproductive system. Females with MRKH are born with normal ovaries and fallopian tubes, an absent or incomplete vagina, no cervix, and either an underdeveloped uterus (uterine remnant) or no uterus at all, although external genitalia are normal. Affected females usually do not have menstrual periods due to the absent uterus. Often, the first noticeable sign of MRKH syndrome is that menstruation does not begin by age 16 (primary amenorrhea). The rare condition affects 1 in 5,000 women across the globe and renders those with the condition unable to carry children.MRKH Syndrome Type 1, the uterus and upper vagina are abnormal, but other organs are unaffected.MRKH Syndrome Type 2, females experience abnormalities in other organs as well (most often the fallopian tubes, and commonly the kidneys and the spine).Dilated therapy use vaginal dilators specially designed plastic tubes which are used to create a vagina. Most women who are born without a vagina are taught how to use vaginal dilators to create a vagina.Watch this interview on YouTube.com/ChildlessWomenTo support our series, visit AsToldByChildlessWomen.com

Fisher opens the show explaining his recent family history research discovery of the itemized invoice from the funeral of his great-great grandfather in 1907! David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org, then joins the show from London where his genealogical tour continues. David tells about his remarkable evenings during low tide along the Thames where he searches for centuries old items. He’ll tell you what he has found… including some items that will make your jaw drop! David then tells the shocking DNA story that has rocked England concerning the Archbishop of Canterbury. He’ll have another Tech Tip, and NEHGS guest user free database. Next up on the show is Paul Woodbury, a DNA genealogist for LegacyTree.com. Paul shares with Fisher the remarkable story of how he helped a client identify the birth father and birth mother of her grandmother, who was born and adopted in Alabama in 1916! How was it done? Paul will explain, but you’d better keep a flow chart. What DNA testing can reveal continues to amaze! Then, Jenn Utley, head genealogist for TLC’s “Who Do You Think You Are?” visits to give us some behind the scenes info about the 2016 episodes of the program every genealogist loves to watch. You’ll be interested in how the show prepares the celebrity guests for travel to foreign lands. Who knew?! Then, Preservation Authority Tom Perry from TMCPlace.com revisits the topic of audio as we move into reunion season. The tips he shares could just save your recordings of the seniors in your family before the record button is even pushed. That’s all this week on Extreme Genes, America’s Family History Show!
